Asseyez-vous et regardez. . . La lampe Gras une icône du XXe siècle En 1921, Bernard-Albin Gras crée une gamme de lampes pour l’industrie et les bureaux d’études. La lampe Gras, est étonnante par son ergonomie et la simplicité de sa mécanique - ni vis, ni soudure - qui lui confère une robustesse à toute épreuve. Mais BernardAlbin Gras est aussi un des premiers designers du XXe siècle : non content d’innover, il ajoute à ses créations une esthétique fonctionnelle originale notamment dans le dessin des fontes et des bielles. Très rapidement, Le Corbusier, séduit par la modernité de son dessin et sa qualité d’utilisation, adopte la gamme des lampes Gras et l’intègre dans son agence ainsi que dans ses nombreuses Le Corbusier dans son atelier réalisations à travers le monde. La lampe Gras entre alors dans la légende. Suivront Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, mais également Sonia Delaunay, Georges Braque, Coco Chanel… C’est la première fois dans l’histoire de l’éclairage qu’une lampe est utilisée dans les ateliers et dans les maisons et appartements. Aujourd’hui cette lampe est collectionnée par les amateurs à travers le monde notamment en France, aux États-Unis et au Japon. Le sens inné de l’esthétique de BernardAlbin Gras a traversé le temps. Usine Gras à Clamart. mai 1929 © Archives J.Ravel GRas2emecouv.indd 1 In 1921 Bernard-Albin GRAS designed a series of lamps for use in offices and in industrial environments.The GRAS lamp, as it was subsequently called, was astounding in its simple, robust and yet very ergonomic design. There are neither screws nor welded joints in the basic form. In 1927 the Ravel company purchased the patent and started production of the GRAS lamps. BernardAlbin Gras was one of the most innovative designer of the 20th century. The functional esthetic of his lamps and especially the design of details such as those of the arms, stems, brackets and bases were truly original and far ahead of his time. Early on Le Corbusier was seduced by the modern design and user-friendliness of the lamps and became one of Bernard-Albin GRAS’s most 30/03/2009 14:05:3 enthusiastic supporters using the lamps in his own offices as well as employing them in numerous architectural projects all over the world. Others such as Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jacques Emile Ruhlmann and Eileen Gray followed this trend as well. Furthermore, such well-know artists as Sonia Delaunay and Georges Braque also used these lamps in their studios. For the first time in history, a lamp was equally popular in professional as well as in residential applications. Today, the GRAS lamp has become sought after a collector’s item all over the world, most notably in France, in the United States and in Japan. Bernard-Albin Gras’s talented and visionary design has proven to be timeless. Le créateur marquera la création française de l’époque en concevant ces modèles de chaise à la fois fonctionnels et pourvus de lignes aériennes et esthétiques grâce à l’assemblage de 2 tubes formant assise et dossier. Structure qui confère à cet objet légèreté et solidité. Certains modèles Surpil seront plébiscités par les créateurs de l’époque comme l’atteste la publication en 1929 dans le portfolio Les Meubles en métal, conçu par l’architecte Pierre Pinsard, de planches présentant les meubles Surpil présentés lors du salon d’Automne sur le stand du créateur Gabriel Jouvin. Leur présence dans cet ouvrage aux côtés de planches figurant des meubles de créateurs appartenant à l’avant-garde, comme Louis Sognot, Robert Mallet-Stevens, ou Marcel Breuer, en témoigne. Nous avons choisi de rééditer la chaise SURPIL pour son confort et pour son design qui résiste aux caprices des modes. La réédition en aluminium lui confère de nouvelles qualités : la légèreté (3,4 kg), et la résistance au temps. We have chosen to re-issue the SURPIL chair, first for its comfort and secondly for its line. Made in aluminium (3.5 kg/7.5 lb), this timeless chair is at home anywhere: in a studio, kitchen, bedroom or on a terrace… The Surpil story, and that of the Stackable Furniture Company is first and foremost that of a french inventor, Julien-Henri Porché, who, starting in 1927 turned his attention to designing furniture made entirely from metal for use in public spaces (restaurant terraces, cafés and other public areas). The designer made his mark on French design of the period by creating chairs that were both functional and yet bestowed with a line that was graceful and light through the use of two tubes which were used to form the seat and the back. It is this feature that makes each piece appear light, while at the same time ensuring its underlying strength. Some of the ‘Surpil’ chairs were used by other designers of the period, as the inclusion of a special insert on Surpil furniture that were displayed on the designer Gabriel Jouvin’s stand in the Autumn fair in Paris in the 1929 publication ‘Metal Furniture’ edited by the architect Pierre Pinsard attests. Their inclusion alongside the work of avant-garde designers of the time like Louis Sognot, Robert Mallet-Stevens or Marcel Breuer is evidence of their importance at the time.
