The past academic year was a very fruitful one and I thank God Almighty for his blessings and guidance. Rev. Fathers, Sisters, Members of the Faculty, Students, Parents and Well Wishers. It is a great honour and privilege to have with us today Ms. Shoba Koshy, Chief Post Master General, an empowered and successful woman as our Chief Guest. I take this opportunity to thank you madam for your honoured presence on this 46th College Day. St. Xavier’s College for Women has been on the path of knowledge, love and service ever since it was established in 1964. Four years from now it is the 50th Jubilee of the college. I am proud enough to claim that this Alma Mater has moulded generations of young empowered women. It has a holistic educational policy which aims at an all round development of students as per the vision of its founders. Blessed by its patron Saint Xavier it is on the path of steady progress in academic, Tribute to our Patron On this solemn occasion, we, the Management, Staff and Students of St.Xavier’s College for Women pay our respectful homage to the fond memory of our beloved Archbishop, Most. Rev. Dr. Daniel Acharuparambil. We acclaim his greatness as an eminent, inspiring spiritual leader and marvel at his scholarly academic achievements and profound knowledge of philosophy. With deep appreciation we acknowledge the humanitarian 13 ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE TEACHING STAFF The teaching community of this college has always made this institution, proud of their achievements. Ms. T. P. Parvathy of the Chemistry Department won the State Level Best NSS Program Officer Award. Dr. Nirmala Paul of Physics Department got the Research Guideship and Dr.Vimala P of the Commerce Department, already a research guide, became a Reader. Two teachers got their Ph.D namely Dr. Aparna Lakshmanan of Mathematics Department and Dr. Renuka N of the Malayalam Department. This year UGC granted 3 minor projects for our institution respectively for Dr. Sybila Pius of Commerce Department, Ms. Sheena Xavier of Physics Department and Dr. Ansa Alphonsa Antony of Statistics Department. Ms. Cicily Pearly Alex of the Physical Education secured the II Rank in the qualifying examination for the Technical Officials in Athletics and the Common Wealth Games, going to be held in the month of October 2010, at New Delhi. 14 Dr. Shyla Papoo, HOD of Hindi is a member of the board of studies Hindi(UG) M.G. University and a subject expert of Staff Selection Committee, and Chairperson of UG Board of Examination, M.G. University. Three books written and published by her have been prescribed in M.G. University syllabus titled ‘Sahitya Chaman’ and ‘Rachana Ka Sach’ for I B.Com Part II Hindi and ‘Samvad Thadha Samrachana’ for BA/ B.Sc Part II Hindi. She is also a governing body member of District Tourism Promotion Council, Ernakulam and District Teacher Co-ordinator of Tourism Clubs, Ernakulam district. Dr. Molly Joseph, HOD of English is the Deputy Chairperson of the PG Board, M.G University; a Member of Board of Studies subject expert in Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady; an Advisory Board member in FISAT, Mookkannoor and she is also structuring syllabus and question papers for Kannur University. NON TEACHING STAFF The Non Teaching members of the community have been functioning effectively for the progress of this institution. Their unassuming service is to be remembered with gratitude. RESULTS IInd IIIrd Percentage The college has a very competent and proficient teaching team of 43 permanent members and 32 members of the guest faculty. The teaching faculty is always keen on updating their expertise and competence through research work, refresher courses, seminars, workshops and creative extension activities. There are 11 Ph.D. holders and also a number of M. Phil. degree holders. The strength of the institution is their selfless dedication, oneness and team spirit. Passed TEACHERS Dr. M. P Vijayalakshmi, HOD of Malayalam is a member of the Governing body, ‘Kerala Bhasha Institute’ Thiruvananthapuram. She is the chairparson of Board of Studies Malayalam (UG), M.G. University and member of Board of Studies Malayalam (UG) – Kerala University and Director Board member of Co-operative Hospital, Kakkanad. No. Appeared services offered by our late Archbishop for the welfare of our society and Latin Catholic Community. Micro Biology 8 6 2 1 3 75% ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES English Association The English Literary Association was inaugurated by Mr. Manoj K. Das, the Resident editor of The New Indian Express. He also released the manuscript magazine entitled “Rivulet”. Ms.Anju Unni of III B.A. English secured IST Prize in Elocution as part of Wild Welfare celebrations. She was also chosen as the Best all-rounder of our college. Chakoram ‘09 The final year B.A. Communicative English Students organized ‘Chakoram’09, an intercollegiate short film fest on 25th September 2009. Sri Sasikumar, Cine Director from Tamil Film Industry Renowned cine artists Shri Jayaram and Shri Sasikumar inaugurated the event. It was followed by the screening of short films. An open forum was conducted in which Director Mr.Ashiq Abu, Prof V.N.Vinod, Mr. Sreejith, Film Editor and Ms. Indu Rajasekharan, answered questions related to techniques of film making by students. Carmel College, Mala secured the first prize. Malayalam Association A U.G.C. sponsored national seminar on “Agrarian Culture in the Folklores of Kerala” was jointly organized along with the Botany Department on 6th and 7th August 2009. It was inaugurated by Dr. A.K. Nambyar, Secretary, Kerala folklore academy. It was followed by a “Karanava koottam”. Eleven seminar papers were presented during the session. The Malayalam Association was inaugurated on 26 October 2009 by the famous poet K.R. Tony. Manuscript magazine “Spandanam” 2009 was released on that occasion. Malayalam association organized a series of lectures on different topics like Lecture on folklore by Dr. Aju K. Narayanan, a talk on cinema and screen play by Shanavas M.A., sub –editor Madhyamam, a lecture on post modern Malayalam poetry by K.R. Tony, a talk on world poetry by Dr. V.G. Thampy, HOD Malayalam, Kerala Varma College, Thrissur and a talk on methodology of language teaching by Shri. C. V. Sudheer, lecturer and resource person S.S.U.S. regional centre Thuravoor. th In connection with Kerala piravi, our college along with V.T. Memorial Trust jointly organized a lecture on “Navodhanavum Malayala Sahithyavum” on 2-11-2009. Physics Association A UGC sponsored National Seminar was conducted on 13 th & 14 th August, 09. The Physics Association was inaugurated by 15 Dr.P.Radhakrishnan, Director, CELOS on 23 rd September, 2009. Seminars on ‘Fibre Optic Sensors’ and ‘Personality Development’ were given by Dr.P.Radhakrishnan and Prof. V.J.Antony respectively. One day seminar on “Numerology and Divine Science” was delivered by National award winner Sri. Padmakumar. The Department provided facilities for viewing the lengthiest solar eclipse of the century on 15 th January, 2010 which was appreciated by all. A competition based on Physics formula was conducted for the U.G.Physics students. association felicitated the University Rank Holders - Ms. Aswathy Agnes Joseph and Ms.R.Devisree. Ms. Sruthi Purushothaman secured the first prize in the power point competition organized by Zoological Society of Kerala. Ms.Anu M.A and Ms.Rajini Kumar secured the first prize in the Quiz Competition organized by the Zoological Society of Kerala. The association also organized various competitions such as Animal Science Aptitude Test, Poster Exhibition, Reading and Quiz competitions. A talk on “Genome and Genomics” was conducted by Dr. Jayachandran K., Reader, School of Bioscience, M.G. University on January 29th 2010. Economics Association Students viewing lengthiest solar eclipse Chemistry Association The Chemistry Association was inaugurated on 13 October 2009, by Dr.Jayalaksmi, Reader, Department of Physics, CUSAT. It organized a seminar on ‘Nanotechnology’ and a workshop on ‘Mental Health Through Yoga’. A visit to ‘Snehakkoodu’ was another activity. th Botany Association The Botany Association was inaugurated by Rev.Sr.Charles, Provincial Councilor of CTC congregation and our former Principal, on 21st August 2009. A U.G.C. Sponsored National Seminar on ‘Agrarian Culture in the Folklore of Kerala’ was held under the auspices of the Departments of Malayalam & Botany on 6th and 7th August 2009 and also arranged an exhibition of medicinal and economically relevant plants. Zoology Association The activities of the Zoology Association were inaugurated by Dr.P.K.Mohammed, Director, Public Health Care on 18.09.2009, which was followed by his talk on “Public Health”. The 16 The activities of the Economics Association were inaugurated by Prof.Miniamma, Head of the Department of Economics, St. Paul’s College, Kalamassery on 1.10.2009 which was followed by her talk on “Sustainable Development and Environmental Issues”. A Career Guidance Programme by Mr. Joseph Job was organized and Prof. Miniamma released the manuscript of the year 2009- “ECOMAGIC”. The Association also organized a series of Departmental Seminars on ‘Career Opportunities in Management, in association with TIME Institute Kochi. Seminars were conducted on courses in Aviation, Travel, Hospitality, Customer Care Management by Team Academy, Kaloor on 15.1.2010 and on Currency Futures by Forex, Kochi on 13.11.2009 in addition to the annual quiz competition held on 10 th September, 2009. The students of Economics Department paid homage to the departed souls of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack on 26.11.2009. The second year students gave financial assistance to the children of SOS village and Snehakoodu, Aluva in December, 2009. Ms.Thanooja Beegum of III BA Economics got the privilege to design the coverpage of M.G. University II Semester, Hindi Text Book. Ms.Elna James Kattoor and Sunumol secured the II prize in the Intercollegiate Quiz competition conducted by S.H.College, Chalakudy. Commerce Association The Commerce Association was inaugurated by Mr.S.Ramesh, Chief Manager, State Bank of Travancore, Aluva on October 26th, 2009. A seminar was organized by The Hindu Marketing Manager, Mr. Ravi Menon on ‘Marketing Trends’ the very same day. Seminars on “Professional Education” by Mr.Anoop V.A. and “Impact of Insurance” by Mr.Regani Rebel, Sales Manager Met Life Insurance were conducted. The students of Commerce Department participated in a Business Quiz conducted by Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha. Mathematics Association The Mathematics Association was inaugurated by Mrs.Usha Devi Kunjamma, Head of Mathematics Department, U.C. College. A seminar on “Interconnection between various mathematical disciplines” by Dr.A.Vijayakumar, Department of Mathematics, CUSAT was conducted on 13th of June, 2009. A one day seminar on “Career Advances” was conducted on 16th of November, 2009. The students of the mathematics department collected Rs.7250/- as part of Christmas celebration and handed it over to the authorities of SOS to sponsor a child. A manuscript magazine was released on February 1st, 2010. SPORTS AND GAMES Dept.of Physical Education organized the 16th Rev.Sr.Redempta Memorial South India Intercollegiate Basketball tournament in August 2009. Sri.Baby Mathew Somatheeram, MD, Jeevan TV inaugurated the championship. In this championship our college won the Winners trophy after a gap of 5 years. Our basketball team achieved the following championships this year : Winners in the Baselius Trophy Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament at Kottayam, Fr.Bartholomeo Memorial Basketball tournament at S.H College, Thevara, U.C Trophy at U.C. College, Aluva and Runners up trophy at the intercollegiate basketball tournament Rev. Sr. Redeempta Memorial Tournament at Assumption College, Changanassery, 17 th Karunya Evanjelie Memorial Basketball championship at Coimbatore, M.G University Intercollegiate Basketball Championship at our college. Miss.Leena Jacob and Ms.Alphy George represented Kerala State for the Women’s National championship held at Bhopal. Ms. Lisha M.D, Anu Joseph and Akhila Manuel participated in the Junior State Basketball championship held at Malapuram. Ms.Lisha M.D, Ms.Linda M.J, Ms.Jilna Jose and Ms.Anjana Michael were selected to represent M. G. University Basketball Team for the South– West Zone Basketball Championship held at St Peter’s College and the team won the winners trophy. They qualified for the All India Interuniversity championship held at Kolencherry, and secured third position. Ms.Lisha M D and Ms.Jilna Jose represented Kerala state for the Senior National Basketball championship held at Bhopal. Ms. Lisha M D and Ms. Akhila Manual represented Kerala state for the Junior National Basketball championship held at Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Our Volley ball team participated in various intercollegiate tournaments this year. Ms. Nimisha Joseph and Ms.Nishamol N. participated in the Senior State Volleyball Championship held at Peringathur. Ms.Nimisha Joseph, Ms.Nishamol N., Ms.Ancy Antony, Ms.Rahana Sadhan and Ms. Aswathy K.P. participated in the women’s state 17 championship held at Kasargode. Ms.Nimisha Joseph and Ms.Sijy M.T. participated in the Youth state championship held at Trivandrum. Our Netball players won the M.G. University Netball Championship held at U.C College, Aluva. Pravisha K, Ragi Sajeevan, Anu Joseph, Honey.M.J, Renjisha K got selection to the M.G University Netball team. Miss.Leena Jacob, Ms.Raji Sajeevan, Ms.Anu Joseph, Ms.Avelyan Maria Jean, Ms Ranjisha K. Ms.Rayana K. Ms.Akhila Manuel and Ms.Honey M.J. were selected to represent Kerala state for the Junior National Netball Championship held at Nasik in December, 09. Our athletic team secured team championship in the women’s section at EKM District Athletic Meet in September, 09 and participated in the M.G. University Athletics Championship in December, 09. COLLEGE STUDENTS’ COUNCIL A revolutionary change witnessed by the college this year was the introduction of seven houses and 14 clubs by the students’ council. All the students were grouped into seven houses namely Chrysanthus, Daffodils, Dahlia, Gulmohar, Marigold, Orchid and Primrose. Under each house two clubs were instituted namely Music Club, Dance Club, Drama Club, Debate Club, Eco Club, Work Experience Club, Painting Club, Health And Hygiene Club, Cookery Club, Reporting And Documenting Club, Writers Club, Speakers Club, Quiz Club And Prayer Club. “Leap like Lambs, Light like Lamps: Jumpstart Xaverians” was the motto of the students’ council this year. The Inauguration of the Houses and Clubs was done by the Cine artist Ms.Suja Karthika. The second hour of every Friday was allotted for the various houses and club activities. Onam celebration included the Pookalam, Onashilpam And Malayali Manka Competitions were conducted. 18 Ms.Avani was crowned as Malayali Manka. Each house actively participated in various competitions. The cookery club and the work experience club jointly organized a food fest as part of the Onam Celebration. A tribute to Kamala Surayya was organized by the Speakers, Writers, Drama, Work Experience and the Painting Clubs. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Savitri Lakshmanan. In the election of the College Students Council held on September 25th 2009, the following students were elected to various posts. Rajeevan. IRS, Director KITTS followed by the Arts Club inauguration by the Cine Director Mr. Jayaraj. The idea star Singer fame Durga Viswanath, Nikhil and the National Violin Artist Sabareesh Prabhakar were the special guests. The Xaverian Queen and Miss Beautiful Hair competition were conducted as part of the Arts Day Celebration. Ms.Mourin was crowned as the Xaverian Queen and Ms.Neema Prasannan as Ms.Rapunzel. The students’ council observed the month of October as the ‘Joy of Giving month’ and gave a financial aid to the children of the ‘Girls Home’. The college youth festival Olive 09-10 was organized from 7th to 9th December, 2009. X’mas and Xaverian day celebration included a solemn Mass followed by Jingle Bells competition and Carol Singing competition. Activities were carried on as club and house activities with the support and guidance of all the teachers. A formal condolence meeting and prayer session was organized to pay homage to the departed soul of Rev.Dr.Daniel Acharuparambil, the patron of our college as well as the Archbishop of the Diocese of Verapoly. The library week was observed from 18.1.10 to 22.1.10. It was formally inaugurated by Dr.Fatima Cross, Prof. and Youth animator, SCMS College, Kalamassery. A book exhibition was arranged during the first two days of the library week. It was followed by a book exhibition competition conducted for the seven houses. Dahlia and Orchid groups won the 1st and 2nd prizes respectively for the same. Book talks were arranged in the library reading hall on all the days of the library week. Dr.Fatima Cross, Dr.Renuka N, Ms.Lima Antony, Dr.Bridget Joseph, Sr.Salini, Ms.Susan Mathew, Sr.Princy and Ms.Deepthi gave book talks. On 22nd January, a career orientation was given by Ms.Baby, the Librarian, Rajagiri College of Social Science. A quiz competition was conducted. Binimol T.G of III B.A Malayalam was adjudged as the best library user. The cultural fest ‘Olive Laurels’ 09-10 was inaugurated by the Cine Director Sri.Kamal and the overall house championship and the best club award was also given. IQAC The IQAC of the college meet regularly and discuss all the major issues and plan out activities. The office bearers are. The grievance redressal cell functioned effectively by addressing the grievances of the students. LIBRARY COLLEGE MAGAZINE The college magazine Xaverian’09 ADAYALANGAL supervised and edited by the staff editor Ms.Rani K.A and the student editor Ms.Arya Vijayan was released by Sri.N.K. Desam, the Malayalam Poet on 14th September, 2009. NCC- REPORT 2009 - 10 Our NCC unit functions under the guidance of 7(K) girls Battallion, NCC, Thrissur. Our under officer Radhika T.R. attended the Thal Sainik Camp at Delhi and has participated in snap shooting, map reading and tent-pitching. Her team won the first position in all India level. Our Senior Under Officer Divya K. Dinesh attended special National Integration Camp at Rajasthan. Our cadets Neethu 19 Mohan and Rinu T.B attended National Integration Camp at Maharashtra. Their team won the first prize for the best cultural team. 36 cadets attended annual Training Camp at St.Joseph’s College, Irinjalakuda and bagged many prizes. Divya K. Dinesh, Radhika T.R. and Geetha K.T. secured prize for group dance in TSC-preparatory camp at Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit, Kalady. 32 cadets attended Annual Training Camp at SN Boys Higher Secondary School, Kanimangalam. Five cadets attended Annual Training Camp at Velloor, Rincy Eugene got first prize for firing. 33 cadets attended Annual Training Camp at Sree Sankara College, Kalady. We conducted a cancer awareness rally at Aluva on November 7th, 2009. Our cadets visited girls orphanage ‘Sevabharathi Mathrusakthi Shikshasadan’ at Aluva. NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME The activities of National Service Scheme were formally inaugurated by Sri.Vinodkumar, Sub Inspector, Aluva Police Station on 13th July, 2009. Dr.Aparna Lakshmanan S., Dr. Raji Joseph and Ms. Vandana Aravindan were in charge of the activities of NSS as programme officers. Kum.Meenu Mohan of II B.Com, Kum.Anjali Asok of II B.Sc Physics and Kum. Vineetha Vincent of II B.A English were elected as the NSS volunteer secretaries of the year 2009’10. The NSS unit received special awards for promoting voluntary blood donation from KSACS and from TERUMO PENPOL. The Pain and Paliative Care Unit under the NSS unit received ‘Best Pain and Palliative care unit award’ from Madhya Kerala Social Forum. The NSS unit in association with Kerala Action Force and with the active support of PTA, Staff and RELAX members completed the construction of 3 houses for poor and helpless families. NSS organized Vidhava Samgamam in which nearly 700 widows participated and their complaints were collected and forwarded to the Vanitha commission. The widows and economically 20 Vidhava Samgamam backward women were given training programmes to make soap powder, note books, umbrella etc. The Pain and Palliative Care Unit in association with Drama Club performed awareness skits at many venues in and outside the campus. Our volunteers cleaned Govt. Ayurveda Hospital and planted 300 medicinal plants and other agricultural crops and the harvest was donated to the hospital. Dr.Aparna Lakshmanan S. was selected as the district coordinator of M.G. University for the panchayath web page updation program conducted by Information Kerala Mission of 88 panchayaths in Ernakulam district and our volunteers collected data from 15 panchayaths. Karthika R. of II B.Com participated in the Republic Day Parade at New Delhi. The seven day special camp of NSS was organized at BTM college, Koonammavu from August 26 th to September 1 st. NSS volunteers conducted social auditing and social survey of 11th ward of Kottuvally Panchayath. During the special camp an Ayurveda medical camp in association with Govt.Ayurveda Hospital, N.Parur and an eye camp in association with Dr.Tony’s Super Specialty Eye Hospital were organized. A special training program for the Kudumbasree units and a personality development program for children of Balasabha units were also organized. Volunteers visited charitable institutions like Evangel Asramam, St.Joseph’s old age home etc. and spent time with the inmates. The NSS unit organized seminars on various relevant topics like women empowerment, traffic awareness, legal awareness, personality development etc. in association with various voluntary organizations. M.G. UNIVERSITY YOUTH FESTIVAL 2009 - 2010 Our college participated in the M.G. University Youth Festival 2009-2010. For individual items, Teena Issac Philipose of III B.Com bagged the II Prize for English Essay Writing; Meera Johny of I Physics secured the III Prize with ‘A’ grade for Mohiniyattam. For group items, our college won the III prize for Mime competition. UGC sponsored Add-On Course in Computer Application are conducted by Dr.Nirmala Paul. 50 students of I UG program and 26 students of II UG program of various disciplines are undergoing Certificate and Diploma Course respectively in the Department of Physics. ST.XAVIER’S EVERONN VIRTUAL LEARNING CENTRE PTA Orientation seminars were arranged for the first year degree students by Dr. Retheesh Ambat. Open house was arranged along with Annual General Body meeting. This year PTA came up with a novel idea of constructing houses jointly with Kerala Action Force and Anwar Memorial Pain and Palliative Care Centre along with several sponsors, for two of our most deserving students. PTA decided to award gold medals to University rank holders and those who got State level and National level recognition. Decision was taken to award cash prizes and certificates to proficiency prize winners in academics, moral science and catechism examination. Contributions were made for NSS house construction, Intercollegiate Basket Ball and Volley Ball tournament and M.G. University Youth Festival. ADD-ON COURSES The UGC sponsored and M.G.University approved Add-on courses are co-ordinated by Dr.Raji Joseph. Courses in E-banking, E-marketing and Security Analysis were conducted under the auspices of the Dept.of Commerce. 15 students of the first B.Com have registered and are undergoing the certificate course of Tally. Students listening to a lecture by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in EVERONN VIRTUAL LEARNING CENTRE St. Xavier’s Everonn Virtual Learning Centre is functioning under the guidance of Ms.Bindu Varghese.The Virtual Learning Centre using the satellite learning system offers interactive virtual class rooms with the aid of VSAT Technology. Eminent academicians gave lectures on topics of varied interests to our students. The centre is planning to start courses in Basic English and also a certificate course of Anna Malai University in Bioinformatics. Various job-assured certificate programmes like Post Graduate Certificate in Banking and Finance, Certification in Technical Support, Infinite and Rite Membership programmes are offered by our Virtual Learning Centre. RESEARCH CELL Research cell conducted two paper presentation sessions for final year degree students. Sruthi Mohan of Physics Department, Ameera of Economics Dept. Divya Mohan, Uma Priya, Neethu 21 and Nature Club of St.Paul’s College, Kalamassery and bagged prizes in Quiz, painting and poetry writing. The Tourism Club organized Inter Tourism Club activities like Seminar, Quiz, Debate and Painting competitions on September 27th, The World Tourism Day. The club also received the ‘Samskarika Yathra 2010’ on 20th January in the College campus. CAREER GUIDANCE AND PLACEMENT CELL Jayaraj and Teena Issac Philipose of Commerce Dept. presented papers in their respective disciplines. ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CLUB As a part of community outreach programme, a four week certificate programme was organized jointly with KITCO and Career Guidance and placement cell for science graduates. COUNSELLING CELL A counselling cell is functioning in our college under the guidance of Sr.Mitty of Chemistry Department. The service of experts from outside were arranged to build up self-esteem and emotional balance in those who are in need of it. A seminar on “Healthy Living Through Yoga” was arranged for the students. TOURISM CLUB ACTIVITIES The Xaverian Tourism Club received the Best Tourism Club and the Best student Co-ordinator Awards in the state respectively from Prof. K.V. Thomas, Union Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries on 4th January, 2010. The present Tourism Club Student Coordinator Ms.Dimple Joseph, Ms.Priyanka Babu, Ms.Aswathy Vasudevan, Ms.Thrishnapriya and Ms.Thanooja Shafi participated in various competitions conducted jointly by Tourism Club 22 The career guidance and placement cell organized programmes to give knowledge about the various opportunities available in the higher learning sector like MBA, MCA, animation, direct marketing, share trading, journalism, hospitality management, aviation, tourism and BPO. ‘Earn While you Learn’ projects of corporates like WIPRO-WASE programme, HCL, CMC Academy, and TATA Enterprise was brought to the student’s attention. Communication skills, resume, writing, interview, soft skills training programmes were introduced by Zabeel, Team Academy, Rabgon Financial Services Ltd. Career Launcher and Time. KITCO along with Department of Science and Technology conducted an Entrepreneurship Development programme of 22 days for science graduates as an extension programme of the cell. Dimple Joseph of III DC Maths got placement with WIPRO during their camp held at M.G. University, Kottayam. PLANNING FORUM The activities of the planning forum was inaugurated by Prof.Miniamma, HOD of Economics, St.Paul’s College, Kalamassery on 1.10.2009. The final year Economics students conducted a survey on the “Effectiveness of Pulse Polio Programme in Aluva Municipality”. A forum named ‘SENSACION’ on current affairs was organized by second year students for students of all disciplines. THE WOMEN STUDY CENTRE Under the auspices of the Women Study Centre, the Co- ordinator Ms.Parvathy T.P. organized various activities. A workshop was conducted by Sri. Joseph Neerikode on the making of detergents, dish washing liquid and toilet cleaner. Sri. Joshy Mulloor conducted another workshop on printing and the making of paper bags. In association with the Chemistry Department, the centre also organized a class on ‘Mental Health Through Yoga’ by Sri. Joshy. A street play ‘Stree Suraksha’ was also performed by the women’s wing (WIDS) of Cochin Social Service Society. The centre is organizing classes on violin and organ. A savings scheme has also been started in SBT for the students. CATECHISM AND VALUE EDUCATION CLASSES Catechism and Moral Science classes were conducted regularly for students on every Tuesday to impart spiritual and moral values. Rev. Dr. Jacob Palliparambil, OCD and Dr. M.K Radhakrishnan, Chief Technical Officer, Nano Rel. gave orientation classes to the Catechism and Moral Science teachers respectively. An annual retreat was conducted for Catholic students and orientation session for Non-Catholic students. the college, along with the presence of the Holy Eucharist. During October, Rosary Devotion initiated under the leadership of the Jesus Youth Members was observed. JESUS YOUTH Prayer meetings are held every Wednesdays. An orientation programme was organized by ‘Friends of Jesus’ during the month of August. Representatives from our college attended various inter-collegiate prayer group gathering such as campus meet 2009 at St.Teresa’s College, Ekm. and St.Michael’s College, Cherthala. Ms.Chandini Philomena of II DC Economics attended the National Campus Meet – Freedom 09 at St.Joseph’s College, Hyderabad. Members form Kerala Jesus Youth Campus Team visited our prayer meeting on 6.1.2010. XAVIER BOARD OF HIGHER EDUCATION SPIRITUAL FORMATION First Friday Mass offered by Rev. Fr. Collins Elanjikal The holy mass was offered every first Friday of the month by the Parish Priest, Rev.Fr.Joseph Collins Elanjikal. The high light of the spiritual formation was the setting up of the prayer room in The Kerala North Region meet was held in our college on 1.8.09 and was attended by the catholic teachers of the college. A one day seminar at Christ College, Irinjalakuda on 26th Nov. 09 on Personality development was attended by six of our students. Two faculty members attended the workshop conducted by Rev.Dr.Vincent Variath at St.Albert’s College on 21.11.09. AICUF The formal inauguration of our unit was held on 15.10.2009 by Rev.Dr.Henry S.J which was followed by his key note address on ‘Today’s Youth 23 HEALTH CLUB Many of the teaching staff and other students besides the sportspersons are using the facilities available in the health club, regularly. SPORTS DAY Annual Intramural Sports competitions were organized at the college sports complex on 2 nd February 2010. Various events were conducted for the Students, Teaching and Non teaching staff. and their Problems’. Three students attended a one day programme at Vimalalayam, Ekm. and also by Sameeksha, Kalady. ACTIVITIES OF OSAX This is real sportsman spirit Rev. Sr. Percy on Sports Day OSAX - Annual Meeting STAFF ASSOCIATION OSAX conducted Spoken English, Journalism, and Computer Science classes for the backward community students of our college. Tailoring classes were arranged for the students by the Alumini association under the guidance of Mrs.Baby Mampilly, OSAX executive member. A quiz Competition was organized by the Quiz Club of our college and the prizes for Winners were sponsored by OSAX. OSAX Executive members visited Karuna Special School, and donated Rs. 5000/- for the welfare of the school. OSAX Executive Committee has decided to give cash prizes for the rank holders Ms.Aswathy Agnes Joseph 1st rank Bsc. Zoology (V) and R. Devisree 2nd rank BSc. Zoology (V) during the college day celebration and also to felicitate our old students with meritorious achievements during the OSAX Annual meet. The staff extended festal greetings to the Principal, the local and general manager and the mother superior. Onam and Christmas were celebrated with colourful variety entertainments. A seminar on course and credit system sponsored by KSHEC and a one day workshop conducted by Dr.C.Thomas Abraham were organized for the teaching staff. 24 CONCLUSION St. Xavier’s college has the challenge of keeping pace with the revolutionary changes of the time, yet upholding the traditional values. This institution has moulded generations of socially committed empowered women of self esteem.
