But it is this very "city-in-a-hurry" tempo, as composer Billy Blanco described so well in his "Sinfonia Paulistana," that makes the city entertaining, attractive, diversified and unique. To think of it merely as a business destination, although the largest one in Latin America, would be insufficient. After all, what capital has 280 movie theaters, more than 70 shopping centers and 12 thousand restaurants? Would you like to sample Arabic, Thai or Portuguese cuisine? Come to São Paulo. We have 52 gastronomic specialties, with turnovers and pizzas that make even the Japanese and Italians envious. Feel like seeing a Broadway-style play? This is the place. Or would you rather max out your credit card at some charming street boutiques? We have tons of them here, from 25 de Março or José Paulino to Oscar Freire. And how about getting to know some paintings that have made history in worldwide art? Just run on over to museums like Masp and Pinacoteca. Since this city never stops, we now even have a museum dedicated exclusively to our Portuguese language. For these reasons, it's really worthwhile to discover this metropolis, even if you have to squeeze it into just one day of your business trip. To help you with the hard decisions about where to go, we have invited teams from the Guia Quatro Rodas (The Four-Wheel Guide) and from Viagem e Turismo (Travel and Tourism) magazine to prepare the publication you are now holding in your hands. All the establishments recommended by these experienced professionals serve as a guide so that no one will get lost in this sea of people, information, trends, aromas and colors. The capital of São Paulo operates 24 hours a day, with places that open and close from day to night. Because of this, it's a good idea to check business hours before setting out. I am sure that São Paulo will surprise you. And when you come here on business, or for an expo, a congress or convention, stay for at least one more day. Let yourself be seduced by the cultural diversity of this many-faceted city, which vibrates, dictates fashion, is always anticipating trends, and welcomes Brazilians and foreigners from all over. You'll be sure to gain a better understanding of what it means to be a "paulistano." An established business destination, the city hosts more than 70 thousand events per year, one every 12 minutes. Of the 160 major expos that take place in Brazil, 140 of them are held here. And they attract more than 4 million visitors per year. In spite of its fame, the city doesn't just live for work. There are 280 movie theaters and nightclubs, 71 museums and 11 cultural centers here. And also lots of food: 15 thousand bars and 12,500 restaurants with 52 types of cuisine. 7,000 rolls, 720 pizzas and 278 sushi are made per minute. It's not by chance that many people consider São Paulo a gourmet's paradise. And a consumer's paradise: there are more than 240 thousand stores and more than 70 shopping centers. To arrive at such impressive numbers, São Paulo has been through a lot. Founded by Jesuits on January 25, 1554, the city nearly vanished for lack of inhabitants at the beginning of the 17th century. Its luck changed with the cultivation of coffee in the southeast region. Railways were constructed for moving the coffee beans, and the Luz station, from which the bags were sent, headed for the Santos port. Meanwhile, immigrants were moving in the opposite direction to work as manual laborers in cofee production. Many of them ended up staying in the capital and contributing to its industrialization and development, even after the crisis of 1929, which affected the cultivation of coffee. In this way, Italians, Japanese and Germans brought their customs, food and events here, such as the traditional Festa da Achiropita, in the Bixiga neighborhood, where plenty of turnovers and lasagnas are served at street stands. Other celebrations appeared later with the social metamorphosis, such as the Gay Pride Parade, which celebrated its 9th season as the largest gay parade in the world for the second year in a row, surpassing San Francisco (USA) and Toronto (Canada). Every day the city has something new to offer in night life, parties, and reasons to continue breaking new ground. Obviously, like every metropolis, it has problems. But none of these should stop you from enjoying the best of what the city has to offer. Check out a few of these, and you'll see that they're not what they seem. The city is very polluted > Like every metropolis, pollution levels are far from ideal. But no one avoids going to New York, Cairo or Santiago, cities that are among the most polluted in the world, because of their air conditions. Besides this, São Paulo has various green oases, such as parks, plazas and tree-lined streets. The city is just for business > No other Brazilian capital has a higher concentration of restaurants, movie theaters and theaters or has such a lively night life. The high purchasing power of paulistanos attracts new things. If there's something new abroad, before you know it it's in São Paulo -- and in Portuguese. 12 São Paulo Guide | Stay Another day www.cidadedesaopaulo.com There's a lot of traffic > This is true, but the SP capital has the largest subway system in Brazil, which is also among the cleanest and safest in the world. The city is dangerous > Levels of violence are higher in the outskirts. In the Consolação region, for example, where the greater part of attractions exists, the average is 1.96 murders per 100 thousand inhabitants, a number close to that of Paris. The city is too big > At each visit you can stay in a hotel close to various attractions and use the subway to get around, so that the city "shrinks." São Paulo people are cold > Not true. You just have to get to know some people from the city's lively night life to realize that everyone is welcome here. The city is the "land of drizzle" > This was true in the 1950s. But the average temperature of São Paulo has increased 1.3 degrees since then. There is less drizzle and there are more storms, mainly in the summer. www.cidadedesaopaulo.com Telephone Information > 102 First Aid > 192 São Paulo Convention & Visitors Bureau > 3289-7588 São Paulo Turismo > 6226-0400 International Calls > Embratel: 00 + 21 + country code + local area code + telephone Intelig: 00 + 23 + country code + local area code + telephone Telefônica: 00 + 15 + country code + local area code + telephone São Paulo Guide | Stay Another day 13 raul junior © >>Entenda são paulo By Bus > 10 thousand city buses transport 4 million passengers on 800 lines every day. Cars and motorcycles travel over them, obeying 5 thousand traffic lights and following the instructions of 391 thousand road signs. It isn't always easy to get around in the middle of a fleet of 5.2 million vehicles. Traffic problems have made motorboys multiply every day in the city, and drivers have to be alert. Another problem are the "flanelinhas," or "car watchers" who ask for -- and sometimes demand -- money to "take care" of vehicles parked on the streets. Whenever possible, try to find a parking lot. Alternate day traffic at the Centro Expandido (Expanded Center) stipulates that cars with license plates ending in 1 and 2 may not circulate on Mondays; in 3 and 4 on Tuesdays; 5 and 6 on Wednesdays; 7 and 8 on Thursdays; and 9 and 0 on Saturdays. One option is to take a taxi, which isn't hard, since there are 28 thousand of them circulating around the city. They are divided into three categories: regular, special and radio-taxi.
