BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 President’s Welcome I wish to welcome all to the Edmonton Stamp Club’s 2014 Spring National Stamp Show. Exhibitors, dealers, and collectors come together to share, barterES and even haggle in an effort to acquire items that would strengthen their collection or allow them to better showcase the treasures they have already assembled. May your two-day weekend provide you with the joy of finding that elusive cover, coveted corner block or new country to explore. This year finds us in a new location, closer to our regular Monday night home at St. Joseph’s High School. The Central Lions Recreation Centre has allowed us to bring together the exhibits, the dealers’ bourse, as well as the circuit books and the Juniors’ table, all in one room for the weekend. The parking lot is large, there are no stairs or elevators to contend with, and the cafeteria, only a few steps away, has many comfortable couches for collectors to congregate with their fellow philatelists. We plan to be in this location for the next year as well so that we may begin a new tradition, one that I hope will last as long as our relationship with the West Edmonton Mall Hotel. Please let anyone at the Club Table know how you feel about our move and together we will be able to incorporate beneficial changes for the years ahead. There are many people to thank for their help in making this event a reality and you will find some of their names and contributions elsewhere in this program, but I would like to end by saying “Thank You!” to you for coming to our show. Without the participation of the stamp-loving public, we would not be able to bring together all these fine exhibits as well as the host of dealers with their enticing wares. We all participate in this pastime for a number of reasons but the work we do for the club comes from the heart and we hope you will be able to appreciate and enjoy the fruits of our labours. Have a great time at our show! Peter Kuester President, ESC 4 E.S.C. BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 PUBLIC AUCTIONS WANTED IMMEDIATELY: Single items ! BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 Selling your stamp collection. There are several ways this can be done. All have their advantages and all have disadvantages. Keep it in the family. If you have somebody in the family who is interested, then the best thing is to give the collection to that person. Sell to a dealer. This is the quickest way to dispose of it, provided you can find a dealer who wants it. There are about four dealers who have physical shops in Edmonton, and you will find them listed in the yellow pages. Shop around for different offers. In addition to those dealers with shops, there exist a considerable number of part-time dealers who mostly transact their business at stamp shows. The Edmonton Stamp Club sponsors two events a year, a big stamp show with exhibits, seminars, etc., in March, and a smaller event in September. Dealers are present at both, sometimes from other towns and cities in Western Canada. You can approach these people about your holdings on these occasions (details on the ESC web site). Sell through the Edmonton Stamp Club. The club auctions material from its own members and from others, to its members, at each regular meeting of the club (about twice a month from September to June). If the vendor is a member (or deceased member) of the club, then the club takes a commission of 10% + 2% for insurance; if the vendor has not been connected to the club, then the commission is 15% + 2%. This method of disposal takes longer, for we break the material down into smaller lots, which are then put into our auctions in batches. Usually, the amount of money realized is 7 E.S.C. BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 Greater than you would get if you in a single batch, but this of course is dependent upon the type of material involved. If you would like to check out the club to see how this works, your welcome to come to one or two of our meetings as a visitor. Details of when and where are laid out on our web site. If you become a member and then sell material, then your commission rate drops from 15% to 10%. It should be Stressed that because we are an association, we are not permitted to sell to anyone who is not a member of the club. What have I got The Edmonton Public Library has stamp catalogues at most of its branches. Be advised that the that the printed catalogue values are only a general guide. Read the introduction sections, especially the Information on Catalogue Values, Grade and Condition. You might be lucky to sell your material for half catalogue, usually much less. Or you might have material that is very special, thus commanding a higher price. Edmontonstampclub.com ESC The Judges John G. McEntyre Arlene Sullivan John Wilson Ed Kroft Q.C. Ed Kroft Q.C. Ed Kroft is currently a national level apprentice judge who is completing his second assignment. Ed lives in Vancouver and has collected stamps for about fifty years. He is the current President of the Society of Israel Philatelist (SIP) and has been actively involved with the society for many years. Ed has written many articles for various philatelic publications relating to philately of the Holy Land and has successfully exhibited at the regional and international levels. In 2012, Ed was the winner of the Reggel Award of the SIP for outstanding contributions to Holy Land philately. Ed was also the 2013 Geldert Medal awarded by the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC). Ed is a member of the RPSC, SIP, BNAPS, AAPE, ONEPS and the Holy Land Philatelic Society. His interests include Holy Land, Middle East History and Aerophilately. 8 E.S.C. BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 John G. McEntyre Bilingual, born in Montreal, John McEntyre was raised in Ottawa, graduating as an engineer with degrees from the University of Ottawa in 1965 and 1969. Introduced by his father to stamp collecting at age seven, he started collecting the world, then concentrated on the British Colonies, the USA, and France; then onto specializing in Canada. Recently, he has moved mainly to revenues, although he still has all his collections, and has been known periodically to add to them. Thus, he maintains eclectic and esoteric philatelic interests. He started exhibiting in Canada in the mid 1980's, progressing to the international level at CAPEX 96. Starting in 2003 he decided to try competing in many international exhibitions, exhibiting in 18 more shows on all continents (Thailand2003, Spain2004, Singapore2004, Australia2005, Spain2006, Belgium2006, Russia2007, Romania2008, Prague2008, USA2008, China2009, London2010, South Africa2010, India2011, Paraguay2011, Columbia2011, INDONESIA2012, Brasil2013). Five different exhibits have been rewarded with 8 GOLD medal level awards in 2 different classes. He became a national level judge in 1991 (RPSC), and aside from judging numerous Canadian exhibitions, he has also judged national level shows in four other countries (USA, Australia, St.Pierre & Miquelon(France), and New Zealand). He qualified as an FIP Traditional Judge at the international level in 2008 completing his apprenticeship at Israel 2008. He judged a continental level show in Rome2009-FEPA and a world level show in Australia2013. He was appointed Canadian national commissioner to five exhibitions (New Zealand2007, Russia2007, Prague2008, CHINA 2009, South Africa2010) and has been assistant national commissioner to another five (India2011, Japan2011, Indonesia2012, THAILAND2013, BRASIL2013). He is a member of RPSC, PSSC, BNAPS, APS, CCNY, AAPE, and, RPSL(UK). Arlene Sullivan enjoys collecting, exhibiting speaking about philately and qualified as a national level philatelic judge in 2006. 9 E.S.C. BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 She is a member of several societies and study groups including PHSC, RPSC, BNAPS and FCPS. Current collecting interests include the postal history of New Westminster, unusual modern rate covers, a continuing study of the 19th century "Peace and Commerce" issue of France and, of course, accumulating boxes of "interesting" covers for "when she retires". John Wilson John Wilson has been a life-long collector but came to exhibiting relatively recently. He has judged locally, regionally and nationally, but this will be his first expedition to the Prairies! He concentrates his efforts on postal history and postal markings of Hong Kong and British Guiana, but tries to collect widely not only to assemble a basic showing of the classics but also to keep up with the changing face of philately. A lover of philatelic literature, he is a member of the Philatelic Specialists Society of Canada and the Hong Kong Study Circle. He holds several positions in his original club, North Toronto, and is currently President of the Toronto Stamp Collectors' Club. E.S.C. Distinguished Service Award Our Club’s highest award, the Edmonton Stamp Club service award, will be presented on March 22nd at the wine and cheese reception. BULLETIN & SHOW PROGRAM Volume 103, Number 1 New Hebrides - 1897 - ANHC Private Local Post Following the cessation of the subsidized Australasian United Steam Navigation Company (AUSN) service in March 1893, the Australasian New Hebrides Company (ANHC), took on the responsibility for handling mails for the NSW Postal Agency, the local manager being appointed postal agent. In May 1893 ANHC received a subsidy of £600 from the Missions to provide a connection to Sydney 3 times per year. The ANHC followed the previous system of an inter-island vessel connecting monthly to an ocean going steamer. By enlarge the inter-island service was provided by a small steamer chartered from AUSN and in addition AHNC paid AUSN an further amount to deviate the Sydney/Fiji service to Vila. In 1896, the ANHC issued their own commercial notes. . The contract with the Missions was expanded to provide 6 trips per year and included landing and receiving mail at each Mission station. By 1897, because of changes in trade and increased competition by the French and their well-subsidised shipping, the Company decided to charge for delivering letters between the islands, Vila and Sidney. This type of material could easily be collected within the Australian state of New South Wales area, even though the islands belong to New Hebrides. 21 E.S.C.
