n the occasion of the East-West
line of Namma Metro completing one month since the entire
stretch was thrown open to public on
April 30, City Development Minister
KJ George recently released a booklet
on safety guidelines for passengers in
Metro Rail. As a part of the event, the
minister also traveled in the Purple line
of the metro, and the Bangalore Metro
Rail Corporation officials even organised a mock drill to educate the commuters on the steps to be taken during
an emergency, and also to assess the
preparedness of the staff to deal with
such situations.
Meanwhile, as this reporter took a
ride in the metro as part of the event,
it was noticed that those who have travel on the Purple line of Namma Metro
have just one thing to talk about: the
4.8-kilometer underground stretch.
As the metro coaches zipped through
the underground stretch on the EastWest corridor, ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ could be
heard as the passengers of all age groups
were awe struck with this underground
tunnel, which they say is truly an engineer marvel.
World's deepest railway tunnel in Swiss
A similar engineering marvel was recently thrown open in far away Switzerland and it is the Gotthard Base Tunnel,
the world's longest tunnel with a total
length of 57.1km.
This tunnel, also known as Gottardo,
runs through the Swiss Alps and is also
the deepest railway tunnel in the world.
The tunnel inaugurated on May 1 is said
to revolutionized and improved transport across the European continent.
As part of the Year of Swiss Innovation, the Consulate General Swiss or-
ganised an event at Swissnex India on
Rest House Road on May 2 to showcase
this engineering innovation.
At the event, keynote speakers like
Prof Christian Schluter of the University of Vern and others spoke about their
organizations and their association with
projects similar to the Gotthard Tunnel. A short film on Gotthard was also
screened on the occasion.
One hopes that a similar event is organized by the agencies overseeing the
development of Namma Metro’s underground tunnel stretch, during which
those involved in the tunneling work
can share their views on how it was to
cut through the city’s underground,
even as scores of vehicles zipped above.
One would like to hear and watch
video clips of the exploits of the two unsung heros of Bangalore’s underground
Metro line-Helen and Margarita, the

Academy of Advanced
Cinematics (MAAC) organized a
walkathon to raise awareness on
the ill-effects of tobacco. Over 400
students, their families and anti-tobacco advocates marched from
MG Road Metro Station to Freedom Park as part of the event.
Smoking kills over one million
people in India annually and is the
fourth leading cause of non-communicable diseases (NCD) such as
cancer and heart diseases, which
account for 53% of all deaths in India. Moreover, according to the recent data on cigarette consumption
in India by the Ministry of Health,
while the population of tobacco users has been declining slowly, the
number of women smokers has
seen a surge. India is now home
to the second largest number of
female smokers after the United
States.
Though Karnataka has a lower
tobacco consumption rate than
the national average of 35%, a recent survey conducted by the Union Health Ministry revealed that
the average age of a person using
tobacco in the state is less than 19
years.
During the walkathon, the students also actively informed people
about passive smoking. The experts
estimate over 10% of tobacco related deaths is caused due to passive

If no direct tickets are available, then

of seats on the same train from other

takes into consideration the delay in
the train arrivals and departures while

For example, if one wants to travel

city roads. The incident happened

According to eye-witnesses, the duo,
who weren't wearing a helmet, were riding
recklessly and attempting wheelies on the
busy Mysore Road. They continued to ride the
same way even after getting on to the flyover.

he Karnataka High Court recently upheld the life sentence of cab
driver Shiva Kumar, who is the
prime accused him in the Pratibha murder case. Following a lower court order
sentencing him with life imprisonment
in October 2012, Kumar had challenged
the verdict in the High Court. However,
the high court affirmed the lower court
order, while ruling out capital punishment.
Kumar was arrested in 2005 on charges of kidnapping, raping and murdering
Pratibha Srikantamurthy, a BPO employee on the outskirts of the city.
Ruling out the rarest of rare element
in the murder case, a lower court had
sentenced him to life imprisonment till
death for committing rape and murder.
He was sentenced with life imprisonment till death, along with 10 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 10,000 fine for
the charge of kidnapping under Section
366 of the Indian Penal Code.
The 11th Fast Track Court had sentenced the driver with another 10 years
rigorous imprisonment for rape under
Section 376 of the IPC and a fine of Rs
20,000.

red-handed and recovered 7kg of marijuana

Recently, the BBMP authorities visited New Delhi to study the possibility of setting up waste to energy units on the lines of such units
being functioning in Central Delhi. According the minister, the
BBMP authorities had enquired residents of Central Delhi whether
those waste to energy units emit any bad odour.
“The residents of Delhi have no complaints against such units.
We want to set up such units in the city to avoid garbage problems
and also save money for the BBMP, which is spending crores of
rupees for transporting garbage to waste management units on the
outskirts of the city," George said.
Waste drop boxes
Embassy Golf Links Business Park has donated 24 waste drop boxes as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Incidentally, George is the chairman of the business park.
Two bins each (one for dry waste and the other for wet waste)
were put up at 12 locations across the city, including Johnson Market, Austin Town, Magrath Road, MG Road, Rhenius Street, Cubbon Park, BSNL Office, Raj Bhavan premises, Vidhana Soudha, MS
Building premises and High Court premises.
“I want to encourage more corporate companies to come forward to donate waste drop boxes. As of now, we have installed
these waste drop boxes at 12 locations on a pilot basis. Based
on the feedback from the public, we will extend this initiative to
other areas in the city," the minister said.

is important to ensure that trees

of monsoons to ensure greater
survivability.

recycling park about 120 km away from Bangalore city. If all goes
well, the waste recycling park would be on the lines of a similar one
established in South Korea.
Addressing the media recently, minister for Bangalore Development and Town Planning KJ George said that he had visited the
waste recycling park in Seoul a few months ago.
The minister added that he wanted to keep the exact location of
the proposed waste recycling plant a secret to avoid villagers staging

KITCHEN WASTE TO REVIVE DYING LAKES
Students discover a novel way to treat contaminated lakes using fruit peels

wo students Mohammad Athiq and
Abhishek B of Sapthagiri College of
Engineering have reportedly found the
answer for treating contaminated lakes in Bangalore and make them almost entirely free of
heavy metal pollutants. The solution, believe it
or not, is from all our kitchens. Fruit peels (Yes,
what we thought was tasteless garbage).
The duo built a filter with fruit peels and
claimed that it would reduce the content of fluoride in the water by close to 93%. The laboratory
wing of The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board verified the claims of the students.
For their experiment, the students took a sample of the water from Bellandur Lake and treated it with the filter made of pineapple and lemon peels in place of activated carbon. The fruits
were treated with a mild acid to make the filter.
The peels of these fruits have a high affinity toward fluoride molecules and hence could be the
solution to revive the polluted lakes.
The concept model of the machine will filter
5-6 liters of water with just 200g of fruit peels.
The students claim that any fruit or vegetable
peel has the capability to filter water and that
this could also be a solution to the long awaited
wet waste dumping solution.

hat do you think would
happen if the law enforcement agency goes on a
mass bunk for a day? Did someone
say freedom? Oh yes, with the cops off
the streets, one can be assured of doing whatever they want—be it breaking traffic rules; smoking in public
places or staying out on the roads all
night long without anyone to bother
them. Wait a minute! No one to bother
them? Maybe not.
Think again. The idea of having cops
off the streets may not be such a pleasant idea after all. Freedom to do whatever one wants comes with serious
repercussions, especially without the
police to keep a check on these 'wants'.
By freedom, we are not talking
about silly snapchats videos here. We
are talking about vandals, thugs, muggers, rapists and sociopaths among
other anti-socials taking to the streets
and having a field day.
It is true that despite having the police around, such nefarious elements
thrive in our society. However, with
absolutely no reistance from the police, just imagine what the city could
be reduced to, though just for a day.
One likely scenario could be the fate
of our VVIPs and politicians. They
would be so insecure that even the
sound of a cracker bursting somewhere could scare the living daylights
out of them.
Okay, the point here is, we can’t do
without cops. But this could be a possible situation. Over 35,000 policemen
in Karnataka are likely to go on a leave
on June 4 as a mark of protest against
the harassment faced by the force.
Meager salary, overburdening work,
no proper leaves and lack of educational facilities for their children are
among their top grouses, and as the
police being the law enforcement
agency cannot legally go on a strike,
they have applied for leave in a mass to
communicate their plight to the government.
The protest is being organized by
Akhila Karnataka Police Maha Sangha, and it is lead from the front by V
Shashidhar, the founder president of
the organisation, which is hell bent
upon orgnising the protest, which
definitely would embarrass the chief
minister and co, if achieved.
The opposition party, BJP, has supported the plight of the police and suggested that the government revise the
agency’s pay.
G Parameshwara, the Home Minister of Karnataka, insisted the policemen on coming to talks with the
government instead of threatening to
protest. This in the view of Shashidhar
could not be feasible, as the police’s
grievances have been put forward to
the government on many previous occasions. Shashidhar also claimed that
many of the policemen in Bangalore
work for 18 hours a day.
Meanwhile, Siddaramiah, who summoned the top brass of the police force
for a meeting on Wednesday, appealed
the policemen not to go ahead with
their plan since it would be against the
police manual.
“I know who is behind this. I came
to know some BJP leaders issued provocative statements in this regard. I
want the policemen not to give credence to an unauthorized union that
gave a call to them to go on leave en
masse on June 4. We are contemplating action against the persons responsible for this," the chief minister said.

hief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday convened a meeting of top
police officers to discuss the issue of the proposed plan of policemen applying leave en masse
on June 4. The Chief Minister
had also invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act
(ESMA) in Karnataka to discourage policemen to go ahead
with their plan of applying leave
on June 4.

to initiate strict action against the
policemen taking leave without
permission on June 4. Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare
Department has also issued a circular to all government hospitals,
including primary health centres,

visit the hospitals and PHCs
seeking medical certificate to facilitate leave on health grounds
on June 4. According to sources,
around 6,000 policemen have
already decided to go for a mass
leave on June 4 in Tumkur and
Chikmagalur districts. Meanwhile, B Dayanand, Police Commissioner, Mysore, said that no
policeman had applied for leave
on June 4 in Mysore.

probe into the violence that
erupted in different parts of
the city and the towns of Srirangapatna and Maddur during the
protests by garment factory workers
on April 18 and 19 has stated that
the police did not follow protocol
and exhibited brutality against the
protesters.
Things had taken a violent turn
following demonstration undertaken by the garment workers seeking
the Central Government to revoke
the ordinance on Employee Provident Fund (EPF).
The interim report states that the
police began action without following protocol as per the Karnataka
Police Manual, which involved giving prior warnings.
Thousands of garment workers
in and around Peenya, Hebbagodi,
Bommanahalli, Maddur, and Srirangapatna among other areas where
there is a concentration of garment
factories, had taken to the streets to
protest. This demonstration saw police lathi-charge and arrest not just
the protesters, but also bystanders
and residents around these areas.
The fact finding team, which comprises People’s Union for Civil Liberties – Karnataka, Manthan Law,
Women Against Sexual Violence
and State Repression - Karnataka,
and other independent researchers,
has stated that women workers were

I
t is said that you cannot fall in love with
the urdu language unless you have read
the works of Ghalib, who was a preeminent Indian Urdu and Persian-language poet
during the last years of the Mughal Empire.
The city recently payed homage to the legend
by organizing a musical play ‘Zikr-e-Ghalib’
based on Ghalib’s letters and ghazals directed
and acted by Zafer Mohiuddin at Ravindra
Kalakshetra recently.
The show started with the host saying,
“Mughals gave India three things, Delhi,
Urdu language and Ghalib”. This line was the
perfect opening for the enigmatic play staged
in front of over 500 people.
The presentation was by the Kathputliyaan Theatre Group in association with Karnataka Urdu Academy.
Zikr-e-Ghalib took over four months in
production and out of about 800 letters written by Ghalib, a total of 50 were used for the
play, with Mohiuddin perfecting the art of
presenting himself as Ghalib, along with the
musicians and Kathak dancers.
The play is a flashback of Ghalib discovering a stash of old letters and his unfinished
autobiography, which he reads to himself—
Some with funny banters with his friends,
some describing his views on life, some about
his affairs with his beloved, some about his
loss, poverty, losing faith in humanity, god
and even in himself. The final letters describe
the pain he feels towards the fall of Delhi, his
beloved city and the other losses that take
place which leaves him helpless.
The stage was set in a simple manner leaving enough space for the dancers to occupy
and one corner was dedicated to the musicians. Ghalib’s Chair, his famous liquor bottle, his hookah and pen were placed towards
the opposite end.
Mohuiddin’s portrayal of an aged Ghalib
was done to perfection, right from his stance
and walk to his style of talking and other
mannerisms.
The life of Ghalib portrayed in a new light
not just as a poet but showed us nuances of
his identity as a man totally lost to the vices
of the world. Mohiuddin did a marvelous
job. Each act of his filled the audience with
instant glee and left many overwhelmed.
One sees the tragedy that occurred to Ghalib
through Mohuiddin. It saw the audience in
tears as well as break out in giggles at his arrogance and foolish acceptance of being the
bad example.
His performance was matched by the
beautiful Kathak dancer Smitha Srinivasan,
who breaks into the scene and reprises his
letters through her dance. The play was
even more mesmerizing when singers Raghupati Jha and 14-year-old Ankita Kundu
wove sweet melodies, that left the audience
speechless. The singers were accompanied
by musicians Ajay Kumar Singh on tabla,
Ashwini Koushik on flute and Sarfaraz Khan
on sarangi.
“This play was a promise I made to my
late friend Fouzia Choudhary, who was the
ex-chairperson of Karnataka Urdu Academy. She had insisted I do the play once at
least as I was writing it at that time. I dedicate
this to her,” said Mohuiddin at the end of the
performance.

running around playing when
we went in to meet the principal of the Tunbridge High School on
Infantry Road, which is celebrating
its Golden Jubilee this year (19662016). We waited for the principal
so that we could get some history of
the old building in the centre of the
sprawling property.
In the middle of the property
stands the YWCA building, which
according to the documents held by
the school, was built in 1823 by Major
John Bristow. The copper plate writing on the frail documents showed
that the land ”with the approbation

the Raja of Mysoor (as communicated by the British residents letter to the
government of Fort St. George dated
December 8, 1815) and with the sanction of Lt.Gen. Bowser Commandant

John McCann that she named it ‘Tun-
bridge’.
Later in 1947, the WACs (Women’s
Auxilliary Corps) used the building as a hostel. “Miss Ramsbotham,
the present president of the YWCA
raised the money and bought it to use
for the YWCA in 1956. She was the
founder principal of the school and
had taught without any payment till
she stopped due to age. We want to
preserve the building as the heritage
of Bangalore,” explains the principal.
The building has a huge portico
with typical thick pillars favoured
by the colonial style of architecture.
The front steps in granite go up to a
broad verandah running around the
frontage of the building. Walking into
the main hall, one is struck with the
height of the roof which is adorned
with Italian tiles from the inside and
thick teak beams.
There are four large bedrooms with
attached baths on either side of the
central large hall and dining room.
Ventilators march along both sides
of the roof of the building and one is
transported back into yesteryear sitting on the old creaking settees, chatting with an old inmate.
It was a feeling of another time and
another generation of graciousness
and gentility, when talking to the delightfully clear thinking lady, sitting
surrounded by her pet dogs. On the
wall is a large pendulum clock that is
still. “One of the bearers over wound
it,” she says, ”and I cannot get it repaired now.”
On another wall is an unusual
enormous elephant head gong which
was a gift. “We get people from all
over the world who come to live with
us,” explains the old lady and they
love the old world air of the place.
Huge framed pictures of the Honorable Emile Kinnard who was
the founder of the YWCA in 1892
beamed down from the walls. As we
leave, the feeling is that this was a
Bangalore that is fast going to be lost
into oblivion and the present generation will never know. And we are glad
for these institutions of the city that
are helping to hold on determinedly
to the very end.

ver five lakh government employees across Karnataka went on a strike against
not receiving optimum pay. The employees
seek pay parity with Central staff.
Many of the government offices like the VIdhana
Soudha and Vikasa Soudha in Bangalore looked deserted on Thursday, when a majority of the government
employees ignoring warnings of disciplinary action, abstained from attending work.
This also affected government schools and colleges,
where the faculty were nowhere to be seen. This seems
to be the case in other parts of Karnataka as well.
The strike is said to have happened after the government's casual attitude towards the notice issued by the
State Government Employees Association to the former
according to the president of the organization, Manjegowda. He said that nobody from the government
bothered to send any message or call, even after the association sent a notice to Chief Secretary and added that
the protests would be intensified if the demands of the
employees aren't looked into.
Not permitting the protest, the Karnataka government
had issued a circular to the employees stating rules that
could lead an employee taking part in a strike to be imprisoned for a period of six months or more, or a fine of
Rs 500 or both.
The president of the employees association rebutted
the government saying that it is in the power of the institution to threaten the employees, but that wouldn't make
the workers budge.
Responding to the circular Manjegowda said, "government has power to threaten employees that it will dismiss or arrest them, but no employee will fear it."
M
inister for Women and Child
Development Umashri said
that the state government gave
its nod for the construction of around
4,000 anganwadi centres during the year
2016-17 across the state. Among the
4,000 anganwadi centres, 3,000 would be
constructed with Central Government
funds and 1,000 would be constructed
by the state government.
Speaking at a one-day workshop for
the officials of women and child development department at Vidhana Soudha
on Wednesday, minister Umashri said
that Rs8 lakhs would be spent on each
of the anganwadi centre constructed by
the Central Government and Rs14 lakhs
would be spend on each of the angawadi
centre constructed by the state government.
“The state government has increased
food and medical allowance for malnourished children from Rs750 to Rs1,000. The
children at anganwadi centres were being
supplied with milk for three days. Now,
the government has decided to supply
milk to the children at anganwadi centres
all the week days,’’ the minister said.
The minister also cautioned the officials of women and child development
not to be negligent in implementing
welfare schemes meant for HIV positive
women and women doing petty business.

India Majis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), who is accused of making hate speeches in the
past during his party rallies across the
country, was barred from entering Karnataka recently.
Owaisi, an MP from Hyderabad who
is looking to expand his party base in
Karnataka, was to address a public
meeting in Bijapur district. However,
fearing that it could disturb the peace
in the region, he was barred from entering the state.
Deputy Commissioner of the district
D Randeep served a notice denying
him permission to enter the state or address any rally in Bijapur.
The ban on entry did not go well with
the controversial leader as he linked the
Congress government with that of the
BJP government in the center.
Linking the ban on his entry into the
state to intolerance, Owaisi took to the
social media to hit out the Congress
government led by Siddaramaiah.

This is not the first time Owaisi has
been banned from addressing a rally in
the state. In February last year, the Bangalore City Police Commissioner had

medium.
The AIMIM had challenged the police order in the Karnataka High Court.

Ban on deep sea fishing
comes into effect

months you will not be able
to savour the fresh catch of
fish from the state's coastline.
Starting June 1, the annual ban
on deep sea fishing has come into
effect. This means that motorised
boats fitted with 10 horse power
engines cannot venture into the
Arabian Sea for fishing.
Every year, starting June 1, with
the onset of the monsoon a ban
is imposed by the Department of
Fisheries for 61 days. This is to allow fish breeding.
The fishermen from the state's
three coastal districts-Dakshi-
na Kannada, Udupi and Uttara
Kannada strictly follow the ban
imposed by the department and
during this offseason they usually refurbish their boats and
trawlers.
The ban imposed on deep sea
fishing, however, does not mean
that seafood restaurants across
the state would take them off
their menu. During this period,
the fresh catch usually comes
from the east coast.
Besides, there is also an option
to savour fresh water fish, which
is available in plenty across the
various reservoirs in the state.
However, the the flipside is
that the cost of fish would go up
during the next two months as
the fresh catch will have to come
from the neighbouring states
of Tamil Nadu and Andhra
Pradesh.

hile states units of various political parties have rolled out red carpets for their
party leaders to be nominated from
their states to the Rajya Sabha despite being outsiders, the same cannot be said in the case of Karnataka.
All three political parties in the state have insisted that their nominees have some connection with
Karnataka. Take the case of Urban Development
and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah
Naidu, who was hoping for a smooth entry to the
Upper House from the state. Even though the BJP’s
parliamentary committee cleared his nomination,
there was some apprehension from the state leaders about renominating Naidu from the state. In
fact, pro-Kannada organisations like the Kannada
Rakshana Vedike (KRV) opposed his candidature.
Nirmala Sitharaman
Under pressure, the party decided to move Naidu
to Rajasthan, from where he will now be contesting and brought in Minister of State for Commerce
and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman instead. Though
Sitharaman is a Tamilian, her parents reside in
Bangalore. The party said that this local connect
was enough to get her nominated from Karnataka. Sitharaman too, sensing the need to connect
with the locals while filing her nomination papers,
said that she would learn Kannada and take up the
state’s causes.
Sitharaman was accompanied by BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa, Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Ananth Kumar, Leader of Opposition in Karnataka State Assembly R Jagadish
Shettar and MLAs. “I have filed the nomination
as BJP karyakarta, with Yeddyurappaji, other state
leaders and Ananth Kumarji being there. I'm fully
confident (of win)," she said.
When asked whether she would protect the interests of Karnataka, "I will take care of interest
of Karnataka. I'm going to be a servant here being sent by honourable Prime Minister who calls
himself Pradhan Sevak. I will be also a sevak, and
because I will have to represent Karnataka, I will
make sure that the interest of Karnataka will be en-
sured in the Parliament," she added.
Fernandez, Ramesh and Ramamurthy
The Congress too decided to field in local candidates. Though there was speculation that former
finance minister P Chidambaram would be one of
the candidates from the state the local leaders are
said to have shot down this proposal. Chidambaram is now contesting from Maharashtra. The parties three candidates are Oscar Fernandez a veteran
Congressman from the state, Jairam Ramesh and
KC Ramamurthy.

Though Ramesh is a Tam-Brahm, he was born in
Chikkamagaluru and is fluent in Kannada. Ramamurthy on the other hand is a retired IPS Officer
from the Karnataka cadre and is chairman of the
CMR Group of Institutions.
The JD(S) which has in the past given tickets to outsiders like the late industrialist MAM
Ramaswamy has decided to nominate Mangalore-based businessman BM Farooq.

drove the MLAs in a bus to the airport
from where they were flown to a safe
destination to prevent poaching.
A year later, when he was sworn in
as a minister, Zameer displayed a loyalty which will put sycophants in other
parties to shame as he took ministerial
oath in Kumaraswamy’s name.
Hence, it is hard to believe how
times have changed and soured between the once close friends.

to don crisp white kurtas upon retirement is nothing new, at least in
the state of Karnataka. Several officers in
the past have sought a career in politics
after a successful stint in the police force.
Everybody from IPS officers who have
held the top ranking Director General’s
post to those who have served as a constable in the state police force have given
a shot at becoming a neta.
Hence, it is isn't surprising that retired
IPS Officer KC Ramamurthy has thrown
his hat in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls
to contest as the third Congress candidate.
While it is still unsure as to whether
Ramamurthy, who retired as the city’s Additional Commissioner of Police, will be
able to make it to the Upper House (as the
numbers are not in his favour), not many
police officers have succeeded in their political careers barring a few.
One of the most high profile IPS Officers
from the state, HT Sangliana, had earned
fame during his career as a police officer.
His popularity was such that a Kannada
film SP Sangliana, which was based on
him, hit the screens in the 1980s. Upon
retiring, Sangliana joined politics. Despite
being a native of the North-East, he could
cut ice with the electorate and was elected on a BJP ticket from North Bangalore
constituency. However, he was expelled
from the BJP and joined the Congress,
who fielded him from the same constituency in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. But
he was unsuccessful in that attempt and
his political career has somewhat come to
a standstill now.
Shankar Bidri, who held the DGP’s post
after retirement, entered politics by joining the Congress. However, after being denied a ticket to contest the 2013 assembly
polls, he quit the party.
He later launched his own political party Janashakti party, but was unsuccessful
in making any impact. He also unsuccessfully contest the Lok Sabha polls as an
independent. He is currently with the BJP.
Other senior IPS officers like L Revannasiddaiah and Subhash Bharani too have
taken a plunge in politics and changed
parties but have been unsuccessful.
A few non-IPS officers like the BC Patil
and Abdul Azeem have gone on to become MLA and MLCs. The late DT Jayakumar, who had retired as a sub-inspector,
served as a minister.
However, the most successful policegiri-netagiri is that of C Chennigappa, a former constable in the state police force, he
rose to become a cabinet minister. Once
a close aide of Deve Gowda family, he
was Excise Minister when the JD(S) had
formed coalition governments a decade
ago.

cheer as India is the fastest growing
major economy in the world. In fact,
India has outperformed China, whose
growth has slowed down.
The country recorded a GDP growth
of 7.9% in fourth quarter (Q4) of 201516 and 7.6% in the whole of 2015-16.
On the other hand, China’s growth
has slowed down 6.7% in the first quarter of 2016.
The has prompted the government
to state that India continues to remain
a bright spot in world economy with
robust macroeconomic and fiscal parameters.
As per the latest Provisional Accounts for 2015-16 released by the government, the Fiscal Deficit in 2015-16
stands at 3.9% of GDP as estimated
both in BE and RE of 2015-16. This is a
significant improvement over the Fiscal Deficit of 4.1% in 2014-15 and 4.7%
in 2013-14.
Revenue Deficit has also shown significant improvement due to increase
in Capital Expenditure of the Central
Government. Revenue Deficit which
stood at 3.2% of GDP in 2013-14 has
improved to 2.9% in 2014-15 and 2.5%
in 2015-16. The capital expenditure has
increased substantially to Rs2,35,253
crore in 2015-16 which is an increase
of Rs38,572 crore over 2014-15 and Rs

Depot, Pulgaon in Maharashtra
which led to the death of two officers
and 15 personnel belonging to the army
and the civilian fire fighting force.
Of the 15 personnel, nine were army
jawans and the other six were civilian
firefighting staff.
Several others were also injured
in the incident, who are undergoing
medical treatment.
The depot which is spread over an
area of more than 7,000 acres is an
important ammunition depot of the
Indian Army. It stores a variety of ammunition in numerous sheds located
in the depot.
The cause of the fire has not yet
been ascertained. Actions to assess the
damage are in progress. An inquiry
has been ordered by the Army.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar
who visited the site said that the inquiry would ascertain whether it was
an accidental fire or case of sabotage.
This fire accident is the third such
incident to having taken place in Pulgaon which is located at about 115 Km
from Nagpur.
It is reported that due to immediate
action was taken by the fire fighting
parties and Quick Reaction Teams located in the depot fire was restricted to
one shed only which contained highly
sensitive ammunition.
The impact caused explosion of the
ammunition in the depot resulted in
cracking of window panes and walls of
houses in the nearby villages.
HAL's Turboprop Trainer makes
its debut in city skies

arely four months after the first
prototype of the Hindustan Turboprop Trainer (HTT-40) was
rolled out from the hangar, the aircraft
took to skies for the first time from the
HAL Airport in Bangalore earlier this
week.
The aircraft successfully completed a
25 minute sortie during its first flight as
it was piloted by a test pilot belonging
to HAL.
In February HAL had rolled-out the
first prototype of HTT-40 with the aircraft sporting all the aircraft lights and
powered on cockpit. The aircraft was
then subjected to ground runs and taxi
trials followed by maiden flight.
The HTT-40 programme on a whole
is a relatively young one and has been
making rapid progress since the project
was approved.
It was only in November 2015, the
Indian Air Force had issued task direc-
tive for the Design and Development of
HTT-40.
The HTT-40 is a tandem seat trainer aircraft being developed at HAL for
the first stage training of rookie pilots.
With advanced features like zero-zero
ejection seats and multi-function displays, it can also be adapted as a light
attack aircraft. Its role includes basic
flying training, aerobatics, instrument
flying, navigation, night flying, close
formation etc.

used to scare away terrorists, it sounds
very unusual.
According to reports, British troops
operating against world’s most dreaded terrorist organization Islamic State
in Libya are using Bollywood songs as
a psychological weapon against the IS
fighters.
The idea of blasting Bollywood
numbers as a new psychological warfare weapon against IS terrorists in Libya came from a Pakistani-born intelligence officer of the British Army.
They came up with the idea after the
Pakistani-born intelligence officer said
that Bollywood tunes would annoy
ISIS, which considers music un-Islamic.
"We needed to unnerve militants
and at the same time use some sort of
passive measure to gauge their force
strength in the area we are working
and it went well," Daily Mirror quoted
a source as saying.
As part of a force known as the
Joint Special Operations Command
(JSOC), British forces are training Libyan troops on how to drive out ISIS
from the town of Sirte and a 185-km
stretch of the Libyan coastline.

s the search for the black boxes
of EgyptAir flight MS804 gets
intensive, investigators claim that
a French-naval vessel involved in the operation has detected underwater signals
that are believed to be emitted from the
plane's data boxes.
The discovery marks potential breakthrough in efforts to uncover why the
jet plummeted into the Mediterranean
last month. Search teams are working
against the clock to recover the two flight
recorders which can offer vital clues
about the plane which crashed while
travelling from Paris to Cairo on May 19,
killing all 66 people on board.
Investigators say without blackboxes,
there’s limited information to help determine what went wrong or whether the
aircraft was brought down deliberately.
The recorders are designed to emit
acoustic signals for 30 days after a crash,
giving search teams fewer than three
weeks to spot them in waters up to 3,000
metres deep. "Search equipment aboard
French naval vessel Laplace, has detected signals from the seabed of the search
area, which likely belong to one of the
data boxes," the Egyptian committee said
in its statement.

17-year-old gorilla named
Harambe, was killed by the
Cincinnati Zoo officials, after he grabbed onto a four year old
boy who fell into its enclosure accidentally on Saturday.
At the press conference, the officials of the zoo mentioned that Harambe dragged around the boy for
about ten minutes, after which the
zoo's dangerous animal response
team shot and killed the gorilla.
The boy was taken to a hospital
in the area with non-life threatening injuries, but is listed in a serious
condition.
Zoo Director Thane Maynard
told the media that at about 4 p.m.
the boy crawled through the barrier
and fell into the enclosure. They did
not choose to tranquilize the animal stating that it could have lead to

head into the machine's drum, sadly for him,

The Fujian fire department were called to
his apartment on Sunday to rescue the man
from the washing machine. The man's friend
found him lying on the floor with his head
stuck to the washing machine first, and tried
to help by using soap to lubricate. When their
efforts went in vain,, they called the fire department. It took six firemen ,40 minutes to
saw through the machine and release the victim without causing much harm. According
to the Metro, the victim suffered only minor
cuts to his head.
When the media asked him about the bizzare event, the victim reportedly was confused
over how the head squeezed in but didnt
come out.

on pure maple syrup. The meeting held in Montreal revealed that
100% maple syrup is a completely
natural product with no added
chemicals or additives. As for
nutrition, pure maple syrup contains manganese, riboflavin and
zinc, along with trace amounts of
a few other nutrients. It also has
antioxidants which are beneficial
for health. Maple syrup, like other
sweetening agents, contains
calories and therefore should
not be taken in large quantities.
However, it could be a substitute
for white sugar which contains no
nutrition besides calories.

itness and working out for me is just about
taking it easy and not putting too much pressure on myself. I want to be as healthy and as
fit as I can because it’s great for me, but I also want
to enjoy life and to be able to have some fun and
have everything in moderation.
For me my diet is something I look after carefully
, and it just means choosing any healthy options
wherever I go. Simple things like switching White
bread to Brown makes a huge difference . I love
including a lot of fibre in my diet and opt for food
rich in them . I love snacking on fruits ! I also make
sure to have at least 3 glasses of green tea per day
as it is filled with antioxidants and also make sure I
keep filling up on water to stay hydrated .
But finally Life is too short and you have to enjoy
it, and you should indulge when it’s time to indulge. At some point, I think everyone should eat
everything at least once and for me it’s indulging
in some yummy desserts!

Delhi-6 Festival, which lead to some
new discoveries and nostalgia writes

es, I went to Delhi and back in
just 2 hours. The saying goes
“Dilli dilwalon ka shaher hai”
(Delhi is a place of big hearted people),
they forget to mention Delhi is also the
food capital. I was invited by Aloft Cessna Business Park’s restaurant Nook and
was made to go on a culinary journey of
India’s capital. The Delhi-6 Festival was
on for two weeks with a daily rotational
menu.
I start off my journey more like a saunter from the Bar WXYZ, I am informed
with statuary warning - it makes its own
Infused vodkas and has already crafted
52 and is aiming for a 100, Wow! They
offer me a very nice Blue Delhi Devil
which was specially crafted keeping the
festival in mind; it is a mix of pineapple
and coconut with a shot of vodka, 100
points there. I can’t wait to drink.
Very soon, my drink arrives and I
take a sip and immediately get a punch
of pineapple, which simmers down to
coconut, I say delicious and sip on some
more. It’s an interesting combination of

two tropical fruits, which is also a rarity. I just hope I don’t end up gulping it
down before my food arrives.

based on the earthy theme, all of light
green and dark wood with abundance

I am a chaat-o-holic. Yes, if you count
Bangalores terrible versions, but my
binge fest happened when I got to the
capital. We started off with Dahi Pani
Puris set on a piece of watermelon,
with mint water and tamarind water. I
poured the water and popped it in my
mouth and ate a bite of the watermelon,
this combination is a first ever and the
fruit just heightens the taste.
Starters
I was served Bhatti ka Murg (bhatti
meaning clay oven with coals) this took
me back to the famous Jamia Masjid
food lane which houses Kareems, where
I had eaten these meats which were perfectly spiced and roasted.
I am very cordially asked by the server if
I eat Kaleji (liver), I say yes and ask her
what is the dish. She says Anda Khee-

ma Kaleji, it was interestingly plated like
a mini hill, with a mini roti, half of a

The combination of egg with the
Kheema Kaleji was very balanced, the
strong flavors of the liver were simmered down by the right amount of egg.
It is not a Delhi curry unless it has one
inch of oil standing on top and one
has to dig into the curry (literally), interesting factoid is that Roghan Josh is
primarily a Kashmiri Dish and they
do not use tomatoes, they make it only
with a local onion called Pran, which
gives it a thin soupy consistency unlike
the version in Delhi. This little factoid
makes me even more curious and I dip
my bread, the spices infused in the meat
which is tender and succulent and an
ongoing drama with tomatoes which
have been cooked for hours on a low
flame makes it a treat for a Roghan Josh
lover like me. Full points to this one.
Desserts
We started off with Kesar Pista Delhi Jalebi, usually Jalebi is served with
milk or rabri during the winters in
Delhi, as we have summer still on
unfortunately, this comes with a new
twist to it, by adding curd. I was all
excited as this was something I have
never tried, I placed the Jalebi on my
plate poured the rabri then the dahi
and put the entire (it was big) Jalebi in
my mouth. I was in wonderland, the
sweet tartaric combination of the rabri
and curd was out of this world and I
dug into some more.
This culinary journey reminded me
of my many visits to Delhi.

It is a delicious sweet made with cottage
cheese and flavors from gulkand. Gulkand is a
sweet preserve of rose petals. So, this sweet is
aromatic and every bite has a rose flavor in it.

INGREDIENTS:
Gulkand – 3 tbsp
Paneer/Cottage cheese - 200 gm
Sweetened Condensed Milk - 200 gm
Green Cardamom - 2
Dairy Whitener/Milk powder - 2 tbsp
Crushed Pistachios - 2 tbsp
Saffron/Kesar – 8-10 strands
Milk – 2 tbsp
Ghee -1 tsp
Method:
Add few saffron strands in warm milk and
keep it aside for 15 minutes.
Mash paneer nicely and keep it ready.
Remove seeds from the cardamom pods
and crush it nicely.
rease a square plate with some ghee and

Add milk powder, sweetened condensed
milk, gulkand, paneer, saffron with milk in a
heavy bottom pan and mix it well.
Heat the pan and cook on medium flame.
Keep stirring till the mixture becomes
thick.
Remove from the stove, add cardamom
powder and mix it well. Spread the mixture
on the greased plate.
Sprinkle some crushed pistachios on top
and when it cools down, cut into equal
squares.
Til Nariyal Mawa Ladoo
It is delicious sweet made with sesame
seeds, coconut and mawa. The green cardamom adds a nice aroma and flavor to it.
Ingredients:
Mawa/khoa/Dried whole milk - 1 cup
Til/Sesame seeds - ½ cup
Fresh grated coconut - ½ cup
Sugar - ¾ cup
Almonds - 10
Green cardamom - 3
Ghee - 1 tsp
Method:
Dry roast sesame seeds in a frying pan till
they are light brown color. Let it cool down
completely. Divide into 2 equal halves.
Roast coconut lightly on flame for 2 minutes till they are light brown.
Roast almonds and let it cool down.
Add one portion of roasted sesame seeds
with roasted coconut, almonds in your
food processor and grind it make a coarse
powder.
Remove seeds from cardamom pods and
powder it along with sugar.
Crumble mawa and add it in a frying pan.
Keep it on low flame and cook it for 2 minutes. Keep stirring.
Now add powdered sugar, powdered sesame-coconut powder and mix well.
Keep stirring and cook for few more minutes till it starts combining and thickens
like a dough.
Remove from the flame and let it cool
down. When its still warm, start making
ladoos.
Grease your hands with ghee, pinch a small
portion and roll it in your hands to give it a
round shape. Roll it in sesame seeds.
Enjoy these ladoos with your family and
friends!

in an attempt to rediscover the
Garden City of Bangalore, have
started a venture called My Sunny
Balcony, which designs gardens at
homes and provides the right kind of
material to nurture these spaces. Jeelani
MN chats up one of the founders of the
startup Sriram Aravamudam on how to
make backyards beautiful and add more
green to your life
My Sunny Balcony brought gardening
and landscaping back in fashion and
beautified neglected spaces. How did
you come up the idea?
It all started around a coffee table. The
four of us- myself, Reena Chengappa,
Shailesh Deshpande and Athreya Chidambi found ourselves discussing Bangalore’s depleting green cover and ruing over
the gradual disappearance of the garden
culture that was once the biggest draw of
the city. We then decided that it was time
to do something about it in whatever way
we could. As the only real spaces available
to modern-day Bangaloreans are their
own balconies and terraces, we decided
to create a company that would focus on
small-space, affordable gardening methods with an urban aesthetic edge - both of
which were missing in most commercial
landscaping companies. We hoped then
and still do, that by starting off a green
culture like this in cities like ours, we can
in some small way benefit the environment as well as bring in some green into
everyday life.

of its operations across six states in India.
4TiGO’s cloud-based technology platform and complementing Business Services will bring various stakeholders of the logistics industry -- including consignors, consignees, fleet owners, transport companies and

The road transport system accounts for approximately six percent of the overall GDP. However, it is

always going to
be a grand affair and
it lived up to the expectations with Royal
Challengers Bangalore taking on the might of Sunrisers
Hyderabad at their home ground. It
was a contest between the flamboyant
and star studded batting order of RCB
against the best bowling line up in the
tournament of SRH. It sure did live up
to the hype and grandeur worthy of an
IPL final.
Sunrisers won the toss and made
their intentions clear by batting first
at a venue which has been considered ‘The Chasing ground ‘. RCB have
chased down gigantic scores on numerous occasions. Warner smoked a
quick fire 69 off 38 balls. He was well
supported by Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh, who made cameos of 28 and 38
respectively. The real impetus of the
innings was provided by BCJ Cutting,
who slammed 39 off a mere 15 balls,
including 4 sixes and 3 fours. Cutting’s
knock provided the finishing kick to
help post a huge total of 208 runs.
RCB should in all probability have
chased down this target, even though
it was a huge score, considering the
occasion, especially after Gayle and
Kohli wiped out 114 in 10.3 overs.
Gayle, who had not exactly lit up
this IPL, contributed 76 off 38 balls,
smashing 8 sixes and 4 fours. The
situation was tailor-made for RCB
with Kohli and AB de Villiers in their
ranks. Kohli continued in his merry
way, scoring 54 off 35 balls. The dismissal of de Villiers proved to be the
turning point scoring just 6 runs.
Even with Kohli, Gayle and de Villiers dismissed and RCB needing 47 off

castle, Sam is tensed about his family
reunion, and the truth about Gilly’s
identity as a Wildling. While at the
castle, Sam’s mother and sister seem
really warm and welcoming of the
three, over dinner, Sam’s father seems
just as condescending and suspicious
about Sam and Gillly. The awkward
dinner serves Sam a bunch of insults
form his father and tales of Sam’s heroism in retaliation by Gilly. By night fall
Sam grows two and decides to elope
with Gilly, the young boy babe and
what rightfully belongs to him – the
family owned, limited edition, Valyrian steel sword. We’ll have to wait to
Again, somewhere in the middle of
a dry patch – location wise and plot
wise, Daenerys may be losing it - the
heat may be getting to her head (we
Bangaloreans can surely relate to that).
The episode comes to a close with a
completely pointless show off of Drogon. Okay Danny, it was a great pep
talk, but listen to Daario Naharis – you
are a great conqueror but your governing skills need honing at the moment.
