Design: pws-design.com Editor: Anne Klahn Cover photo: L’Oréal team at the Color Run No sooner had we finished our 20th Anniversary celebrations than we were, of course, straight into what is an equally successful and busy 21st year! It is so rewarding to announce that the LGFB Programme is now available in 80 hospital and cancer care centres nationwide, with four new locations launched in the first six months. Our Masterclass programme has gone from strength to strength with a target of 2,000 additional beneficiaries in 2015; plus we have re-launched our self-help Confidence Kit and forged some very important new partnerships. I had the privilege of attending the LGFB International Conference in South Africa in February, with representatives from 19 of our 26 countries. It is incredible what some of the teams achieve and it certainly gave me new inspiration and motivation to continue to grow and evolve LGFB in the UK. One thing that particularly struck me was the close relationship that other LGFB teams have with medical professionals, such as oncologists, cancer nurse specialists and radiographers. We have tremendous support from some leading oncologists in the UK – see our interview with Professor Margaret Spittle on page 6 – and from the hospital teams where we have workshops – but as Professor Spittle says, perhaps we need more general ‘visibility’ within the medical world. Cosmetic Toiletry & Perfumery Foundation Programme Title: Look Good Feel Better Registered charity: 1031728 Address: West Hill House, 32 West Hill, Epsom, Surrey, KT19 8JD Email: [email protected] I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing Chairman, Susan Taylor, for her support over the past seven years, during which we have seen remarkable developments in the charity. Susan is staying on the Board and I am delighted to welcome our new Chairman, Robin Linklater. As always, I would like to thank everyone for their much needed support – from Industry Associations, COPRA and the Fragrance Foundation; all our long-standing and new members; our Regional Co-ordinators and beauty volunteers and everyone who goes the extra mile to raise vital funds for us. As you will see on Pages 10 & 11, this year’s Feel Better Week has broken all records and many more activities are planned for the rest of the year. Last, but by no means least, my thanks to our incredibly hard-working Head Office team, who continue to work closely together to drive our vision for the charity forwards to new heights. I hope you enjoy our redesigned ‘magazine’ and reading all our news. With my thanks and best wishes, Sarahjane Robertson LGFB executive director LookGoodFeelBetterUK @lgfbuk lgfbuk Telephone: 01372 747500 Website: www.lgfb.co.uk lgfbuk | LGFB News LGFB WELCOMES NEW CHAIRMAN At the end of March, Look Good Feel Better Chairman, Susan Taylor, handed over the reins to new Chairman, Robin Linklater. Robin has spent most of his working life in retail, holding the role of Divisional Director of Debenhams Cosmetics. He was also Managing Director of Lancaster before becoming Chairman of the Fragrance & Beauty Association. Susan has been an integral part of the charity since its inception in 1993, firstly as Vice Chair and then as Chairman since 2007. In that time, she has worked with the charity to identify an ambitious vision and enjoyed seeing its significant growth to a nationwide network of hospital and cancer care centres. Susan, who will remain on the LGFB Board, comments: “I am delighted to be handing over to such a consummate professional as Robin; we are most fortunate that he can undertake the Chairman’s role for this next key stage of the charity’s development.” In taking over the baton, Robin says: “I am very honoured to be considered suitable to be the next Chairman following on from the previous incumbents Richard Bradley, Peter Norman and Susan. I hope to do my best to keep up their incredible standards in the remarkable 21 years of the charity.” 1 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE The 6th LGFB International Conference was a wonderful opportunity to exchange views, news, issues and ideas with the international LGFB network. Held at the Cullinan Southern Star hotel in Cape Town, there were 19 delegates representing all but seven of the countries in which LGFB operates. The USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK are the ‘oldest’ countries and we have 12 countries across Europe. 2 Whether large or small, we all have very similar programmes with the resultant issues, challenges and successes. It is very beneficial to have the opportunity to discuss global opportunities; global research studies; international cause-related marketing and corporate social responsibility initiatives, alongside practical issues such as volunteer engagement, product donations and fundraising. Preparation for the meeting had entailed many months of communication by the International Steering Committee (USA, Canada, UK, France, Netherlands and Australia) and detailed country profiles were prepared by each organisation to enable a full picture of LGFB worldwide. 1.7 million women internationally have been supported since 1989. As the only international cancer support charity, Look Good Feel Better is uniquely positioned to undertake worldwide research into the positive benefits of our services and we plan for the results of that research to be released in 2016. 3 LGFB Worldwide... women reached to date, supported by... volunteer beauty consultants, which equals... patients supported annually. 1: Margaret, Glenda and Charmaine – LGFB’s hosts in Cape Town 2: The LGFB meeting in progress 3: The team visit Signal Point overlooking Table Mountain Summer 2015 | 3 Look Good Feel Better Magazine | LGFB News LGFB NEWS >> programme update WORKSHOPS REACH 80 locations 1 In the first half of our 21st year, we have launched the LGFB Programme in four new locations, bringing the total number of hospitals and cancer care centres offering workshops to 80. In March, we launched at St. Richard’s Hospital, Chichester and at the Robert Horrell Macmillan Centre at Peterborough Hospital. In April the LGFB Programme was introduced at Maggie’s Merseyside at Clatterbridge in Wirral, Cheshire and May saw the launch at Solihull Hospital. 2 Jane Lucas, Deputy Manager, Macmillan Information Service, Western Sussex Hospitals, commented after the first few sessions: “Our ladies love the workshops. They really enjoy themselves having an afternoon of pampering, and they look amazing and clearly feel great afterwards!” Kathy Wright, Centre Head at Maggie’s Merseyside at Clatterbridge, said: “I am really excited that we are working collaboratively with Look Good Feel Better. Having attended a session and recommended the LGFB workshops to people, I have witnessed their experiences and found them to be outstanding.” 1: Beneficiaries at a LGFB workshop 2: Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Cheshire a big Thank you to Procter & Gamble Procter & Gamble’s Distribution Centre in Bournemouth has offered logistics support almost since LGFB was founded. All 266,000 of the donated products from different companies are stored, data-captured and then picked and packed into around 14,000 highly valued patient gift bags, each year. 4| P&G’s Bournemouth Site Leader, Ewan Forsyth says: “We are proud to make this donation of storage space, personnel time and logistics support for such an important cause.” P&G Bournemouth was recently presented with a LGFB Outstanding Supporter Award. To date, we have reached almost 2,300 extra women through the Masterclass service, which has expanded to cover new areas across the UK, most notably Winchester, Ayrshire, Wigan, Crewe, Dorchester and Cheshire. We have organised Masterclasses at Boots, Tesco community spaces, Liberty’s London, Champneys, Bannatyne Health Clubs and within the very welcoming offices of new member company, Dermalogica (pictured above). Dermalogica joined LGFB in January and will be hosting Masterclasses through support from their national team, for whom a series of regional training sessions was held in April. Dermalogica’s Marketing Manager, Jade Harris, has been appointed a LGFB Ambassador, acting as the company’s key liaison for the Masterclass programme as well as fundraising support. Shannan Walls, LGFB Masterclass Co-ordinator, says: “Masterclasses are completely flexible and can be tied in with other activities and services, making it a more holistic experience for the women who attend. Services such as hair and wig styling, massages, spa facilities and lunch can all be added into the mix. The flexibility also means that we can host in unusual venues such as the St. James Park football stadium in Newcastle and the historic venue of Liberty’s 140 year old Heritage Suite.” REGIONAL CO-ORDINATORS meeting Held in Stratford-upon-Avon in February, 34 Regional Co-ordinators attended our annual conference, along with the Head Office team. Executive Director Sarahjane Robertson gave an overview of the 20th Anniversary year and strategy for 2015 and beyond, followed by presentations from Lisa Curtis, Head of Programme Services and Ian Daniels, Head of Fundraising. Sarah Emerson, Regional Manager for the North and each of the regional teams presented different aspects, ideas and issues. Outgoing Chairman, Susan Taylor and incoming Chairman, Robin Linklater were guest speakers after dinner. Cathy Birkinhead, Luton Regional Co-ordinator, commented: “It was great to hear all about LGFB’s fantastic achievements and plans for the future and to hear everyone’s ideas. The conference showed me how much LGFB not only values our role as Regional Co-ordinators, but also the volunteers. That recognition and appreciation is extremely motivating and I came away inspired to continue the good work and share it with my volunteer team back in my area.” NEWS FROM THE NORTH Sarah Emerson, Regional Manager for the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, has hit the ground running in her first nine months, attending one or two workshops a week across the region and meeting up with hospital contacts and Regional Co-ordinators, visiting retailers, recruiting around 200 new volunteers and setting up training and induction events. Travelling as far north as Inverness and as far south as Chester, means that two or three days a week are field-based. Sarah has recently held her first Training & Induction event, with 22 volunteers, for the launch of the Programme at Maggie’s Merseyside at Clatterbridge and more are planned across the region. Sarah comments: “I feel really at home in this new role and believe that I’m now starting to make a real difference, helping LGFB support many more women going through cancer treatment, whilst ensuring the quality and consistency of our services.” If you would like to help, or become a LGFB volunteer, email us at [email protected] or call us on 01372 747500. Summer 2015 | 5 Look Good Feel Better Magazine | Points of View POINTS OF VIEW: an oncologist Margaret Spittle Sarahjane Robertson, Executive Director of Look Good Feel Better, recently met up with Professor Margaret Spittle, OBE, FRCP, FRCR, AKC, to discuss her views on the LGFB Programme from a medical perspective. A Consultant Oncologist since 1971, Professor Spittle spent many years at what was then the Middlesex Hospital, now University College Hospital (UCH), as well as in Harley Street. Professor Spittle is a keen supporter of LGFB and endorses the whole philosophy of what she describes as a “wonderful, unique brand”. She explains: “Anything that improves confidence during a very difficult time for a patient has to be a marvellous thing. It’s not just about the aesthetic or facial aspects, but it’s also about feeling lethargic, gaining weight, yet having a loss of appetite and feeling unworthy.” SO THE PSYCHO-SOCIAL ELEMENTS OF CANCER TREATMENT ARE WIDELY RECOGNISED BY THE MEDICAL PROFESSION? The medical profession is hugely aware and trained in all elements relating to the side effects of treatment. It’s not just about hair loss – which we know can include brows and lashes – but mouth ulcers, nails splitting, lethargy, depression and other debilitating things. These are all very important to a patient and yet, in the majority of cases, the patient will not want to worry her doctor about what they think the doctor may perceive as ‘touchy/ feely’ or less important aspects of their treatment. Patients should talk to medical professionals about how they are 6| feeling – depressed, reclusive, lacking in confidence. If a female patient is accompanied by a husband or partner, I will sometimes ask them – is she telling the truth? And quite often it’s from the husband that I hear that the patient is not coping at all well - that perhaps she is so lethargic or depressed, that she may not get out of bed all morning. DO DOCTORS ACTIVELY BRING UP THE SUBJECT OF SIDE-EFFECTS AND WHAT CAN BE DONE TO HELP SUPPORT WOMEN? A patient will usually ask if the treatment will cause hair loss and doctors will confirm that a specific treatment could have this side effect, but perhaps not to the extent that it will include loss of brows and lashes, which most patients find very difficult to cope with. Every patient has an oncology support team and they will speak to patients about supplementary or complementary ‘therapies’, so this team and, in particular, the Cancer Nurse Specialist are key in communicating support services such as the LGFB workshops and masterclasses. WHAT DO YOU FEEL ARE THE KEY BENEFITS OF THE LGFB PROGRAMME AND THE MAIN EFFECTS ON BENEFICIARIES? I believe that LGFB actually addresses the things that really worry patients a lot – the aspects that they sometimes don’t feel able to talk to their doctor about. After a LGFB workshop, I’ve witnessed that patients become less depressed and more able to get on with a ‘normal’ life. DO YOU BELIEVE THAT THE LGFB PROGRAMME SHOULD BECOME AN INTEGRAL PART OF A PATIENT’S TREATMENT? Most definitely. There are enormous positive benefits to wearing make-up and being shown how to look your best during treatment. Drawing a brow back on or highlighting eyes with missing lashes is a vital skill. The group dynamic of a workshop is also incredibly beneficial – meeting other women in the same situation, making new friends and having that support network. The problem is how do you quantify the benefits? Attitude does make a difference, but it’s difficult to quantify the effect. So, taking the common sense and personal experience approach – if people look good, they do feel better and if you can restore someone’s confidence – that has to be a wonderful thing. AS A SUPPORTER OF THE WORK OF LGFB, HOW WOULD YOU INFLUENCE OTHER ONCOLOGISTS AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS TO RECOGNISE THE VALUE OF THE PROGRAMME? I am a keen supporter of LGFB but I think there are many of my colleagues who don’t know the extent of your services and the profound effect they have on patients. For example, the number of hospitals, cancer care centres and support groups in the UK offering the Programme; the fact that LGFB operates in 26 countries around the world. As I said before, you have a wonderful, unique brand, which has grown so much. Maybe you need to have much greater visibility as an adjunct at medical and nursing conferences, for example, or having articles published in leading medical journals. Let me know how I can help! | Points of View POINTS OF VIEW: a lgfb beneficiary Marzena Taylor LGFB interviewed beneficiary Marzena Taylor during the filming for the new Confidence Kit (see page 12). Marzena was diagnosed with breast cancer and has had her right breast removed, as well as undergoing reconstructive surgery. She is incredibly matter-of-fact about her story and told her two young children that cancer was like a kind of ‘flu’, that the doctors were going to make her better, but that she may not look or feel very good while she was having her treatment. Thankfully, she now says: “I feel great and I’m returning back to my old self. My journey wouldn’t have been so easy without the help of LGFB.” Now she has overcome her treatment’s visible and non-visible side-effects, which included short-term memory problems and, after a second reconstructive operation, Polish-born Marzena is planning to return to her job as an Accountant. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE MAIN BENEFITS OF THE LGFB PROGRAMME? There are many, many benefits, but I think the main one is that it distracts you from thinking about your cancer. The LGFB Programme has a therapeutic effect because you are doing something that helps your skin and you are looking after yourself, so it helps the process of healing. There’s also a psychological benefit in that you meet other women in the same situation and see how they are coping and can exchange tips and advice – I’ve stayed in touch with a couple of women I met at the workshop. Then there is the educational benefit – you’re learning how to use make-up effectively, which is a life skill. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HOW YOU FELT BEFORE, AND THEN AFTER, ATTENDING A LGFB WORKSHOP? I was very depressed, then puzzled, then shocked and very scared about the side effects of treatment. When you think you are going to lose all your hair, even the hair in your nostrils, as well as brows and lashes, it just makes you very frightened. Consciously, you blame yourself and I didn’t want to go anywhere or see anyone. You feel you have a stigma. I was angry and unhappy. After the workshop, I felt back in control. I felt empowered and transformed. You think: ‘I feel good, very positive; I can beat it.’ WHAT WAS THE REACTION OF YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS TO YOUR LGFB ‘TRANSFORMATION’? My husband and children were all very supportive from the beginning and I tried not to make a big deal of it. After I came home from the workshop, they said ‘Mummy, you look gorgeous.’ So they are happy, and Mummy is happy! My husband loved the styling of my wig and said he’d love me to have my hair like that. Friends told me ‘you look so good’ and I even got compliments from strangers in the street – something I’d never had before! I felt that I was receiving such positive energy from others. DID YOU FEEL ABLE TO TALK TO YOUR ONCOLOGIST AND CANCER SUPPORT TEAM ABOUT THE SIDE-EFFECTS OF TREATMENT? I was fortunate to have a very good doctor and team and developed a trust with them from the beginning. They all make sure that you retain your dignity. Patients need to be open with their doctor and talk about everything that concerns them. I asked my Macmillan Nurse how I was going to cope with my blotchy, red, dry skin and loss of brows. She was the one who told me about LGFB. I think it should be offered to everyone who is undergoing treatment – it should be mentioned during consultations, so there’s a big role for medical professionals to play in ensuring their patients know about LGFB. I cannot praise the Programme enough, it creates such positive energy and the icing on the cake is the wonderful gift bag, with its great selection of products, some of which I will definitely buy in the future! Summer 2015 | 7 Look Good Feel Better Magazine | Events EVENTS >> Bold is beautiful in aid of LGFB Following the amazing success of the Brow Arch March in 2014, Benefit Cosmetics has this year embarked on its boldest move yet, by launching its first global philanthropy programme, “Bold is Beautiful”, in aid of Look Good Feel Better and Refuge. In May, Benefit Cosmetics donated 100% of its profits from its brow wax services to the two charities, whilst also offering customers who purchased a brow wax service during the month, a complimentary full size Gimme Brow product, worth £18.50. Key to the initiative was a fundraising march through the streets of Central London on Sunday 10th May. Launched by TV and radio presenter Sarah-Jane Crawford, she joined over 500 hundred women of all ages to take part in the 5k march, which started and finished in Cavendish Square and took walkers past some of London’s most iconic attractions, including Marble Arch, Wellington Arch and Piccadilly Circus. Participants were encouraged to start with minimal make-up, stopping at checkpoints throughout the route to receive beauty ‘touch-ups’ to their skin, lips, eyes and, of course, eyebrows, courtesy of the Benefit team. Carly Boyt Sarah-Jane Crawford, as Campaign Ambassador, said: “Empowering women to have big dreams and to take bold moves is something I passionately believe in! Both Look Good Feel Better and Refuge undertake such incredible work within the UK. The charities support women experiencing very different challenges; however, their goal to regain a sense of self and wellbeing is ultimately the same.” Benefit Cosmetics Managing Directors, Ian Marshall & Gail Bojarski, explain the thinking behind Bold is Beautiful: “Brows have the ability to completely transform someone’s appearance. They frame your face, draw attention to your eyes and can even take years off your look. Taking the proceeds from a service that creates such a remarkable change on the surface and donating them to charities that ignite a deeper change in the lives of women is the easiest way to look good and feel good doing it.” LGFB’s PR & Comms Manager: “We’re proud to have been supported by Benefit for a number of years and we are so pleased to be a part of Bold is Beautiful. In addition to brow waxing and the fantastic march, it’s been incredible to see so many of the Benefit teams really backing the campaign and going above and beyond by holding regional fundraising events such as cake bakes, fashion shows, sponsored walks, runs, raffles and cocktail parties – to name just a few.” Carly (2nd from right) with Sarah-Jane Crawford & the LGFB team amount raised Over £260,000! Benefit teams around the country have undertaken over 45,000 brow treatments and created numerous local events – raising this stunning total, which will be shared equally between LGFB and Refuge. 8| | New Partnerships NEW PARTNERSHIPS >> M&S BEAUTY 1 2 Look Good Feel Better is incredibly proud to have been selected as the official charity partner for M&S Beauty, a partnership that will help us increase our reach and enable us to support many more women and teenagers living with cancer. The partnership launched officially at the beginning of June as part of this year’s Feel Better Week, with a range of exciting in-store awareness activities and Head Office fundraising. M&S Beauty will be donating 10% of sales from their Autograph and Formula ranges to LGFB during the week and the partnership is also boosted by the recruitment of a number of M&S Beauty Advisors who will be able to use their day per year volunteering time in support of LGFB. In launching the partnership, Sarahjane Robertson, Executive Director of LGFB, says: “We are thrilled to be welcoming M&S Beauty as a new member company. Their support will not only allow us to raise considerable awareness and funds for Look Good Feel Better but will also enable us to develop a more personal one-on-one service between M&S expert Beauty Advisors and women and teenagers needing our support. Initially, advisors from M&S’s top 45 stores will be invited to train to signpost patients to LGFB services in their local area and we hope to extend this to over 200 stores within the next 12 months. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial partnership with this exciting new member company.” Jo Jenkins Director of Lingerie and Beauty at M&S “Supporting LGFB really links with our core M&S values. The latest statistics indicate that 1 in 2 people are likely to be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their life, hence it is a cause that touches so many of us as M&S employees, and our customers.” Pictured above: 1: (Left) The M&S team at Marble Arch, London with LGFB Patient Ambassador Rachel Walker (right) 2: A member of the M&S Cardiff team Summer 2015 | 9 Look Good Feel Better Magazine | Feel Better Week The first week in June saw thousands of Look Good Feel Better supporters coming together across the country to raise funds and awareness of LGFB as part of our 3rd annual fundraising event Feel Better Week. In the run up to the week over 1,000 fundraising packs were dispatched, which included more than 10,000 balloons and 2,500 metres of bunting. In addition, over 700 t-shirts and 75 raffle boxes were sent out for various events. From the ever-popular cake bakes and pink dress-down days, raffles and tombolas at work, to pamper parties in salons and coffee mornings, or wine evenings with friends at home – everyone got involved. This year we heard of some more ingenious ways of raising money including, a pop-up pink lemonade stand, smoothie stations, male waxing at various Bannatyne Health Clubs, a Tan-a-thon at Heaven Scent Beauty Salon and a 24 hour non-stop Spin-a-thon at L’Oréal’s head office. Glorious gardens were opened up to be admired and enjoyed in the early summer sunshine. Many companies turned their meeting rooms and receptions into mini beauty salons for colleagues to enjoy some pampering in return for a donation. The classic film ‘Pretty in Pink’ was featured in a number of pop-up cinemas which, together with delicious snacks, helped boost funds raised. Our friends at Mint Velvet created a wonderful LGFB playlist on Spotify with a donation being made every time it was downloaded and Member Companies Dermalogica, Elizabeth Arden and M&S Beauty all created sales promotions in-store for the week, with donations on certain products. In addition we had a number of celebrities endorsing our events. Manchester United and England player Chris Smalling supported the fundraising efforts at Bannatyne’s in Manchester and comedian Peter Kay enjoyed a cupcake or two with the Beauty advisors at Tesco Beauty World in Horwich. Meanwhile, The Pink Panther himself dropped into KGA’s offices in Weybridge. And of course there was our fantastic 93 strong LGFB Color Run Team who, under sunshine and blue skies, completed the London Color Run to mark the end of this year’s Feel Better Week. Everyone had a colourful and fun time and we have already received requests for a bigger Color Run in 2016 – watch this space! Feel Better Week would not be the success it is without you. Since we started the event in 2012 we have raised over £400,000 and in doing so your funds have enabled us to provide much needed support to over 8,000 women and teenagers living with cancer. A huge thank you for your support and enthusiasm for Feel Better Week this year. We hope you will mark it on your calendar for next year (6th – 12th June), so we can continue to grow the event and in doing so increase our reach even further. LGFB Team hug pre-colour! amount raised Over £160,000! At the time of writing, we have already exceeded our ambitious target of £150,000, enabling LGFB to provide support to over 3,000 women and teenagers at one of our confidence boosting Workshops. 10 | LGFB Regional Coordinator Wendy Remnant and daughter Michelle Sunshine and colour = a fantastic event | Feel Better Week A 24 hour Spin-a-thon at L’Oréal head office LGFB supporter Lorraine McClellan created a wonderful pink raffle A Kick-a-thon with Titan Taekwondo Club X Factor star Chico drops in to Bannatyne’s in Darlington! Kreena The Confidence Kit provides them with comprehensive information and tips in an easy-to-follow DVD and booklet, in the comfort of their own home. It’s also been an excellent tool in raising awareness for the charity. Six years on, it’s time to make the Confidence Kit look even better. Generously sponsored by member company Avon, the new Confidence Kit features the transformation of four ‘models’, recruited via a social media call-out. Two of them, Kreena and Maria, have already been seen in our excellent ‘#Warpaint4life’ campaign and joining them for this project are Marzena and Alix. You can read more about Marzena’s transformation on page 7. The two days of filming were, according to LGFB Executive Director Sarahjane Robertson, “amazing – hard work but filled with fun, laughter and great camaraderie, with Kreena and Maria, as the ‘old hands’ chatting to and advising Marzena and Alix on being models. We are so grateful to Caroline Barnes who undertook four very detailed skincare and make-up ‘transformations’; Charles Worthington for giving up two days of his time to support us with wig selection, styling and haircare; Nicky Smetham and Jenny Nippard for the head-coverings and nail care elements. What an amazingly talented team!” Maria Wigs were generously supplied by Trendco, with three being donated at the end of filming. Before her cancer treatment, Maria had dreadlocks. “I had every intention of having my head shaved for this filming, as my hair had grown back so curly, I looked like my Dad!” With Charles’s help she was persuaded to try a long black wig, which looked fabulous. She told us that when she got home her husband almost didn’t recognise her! Alix The New DVD & Booklet The DVD is easy to navigate and includes tutorials covering make-up and skincare; wig selection and styling; haircare; headwear; and nail care and is supported by a detailed printed booklet. There is an interview with each of the ‘models’ about their ‘transformation’. The Confidence Kit will be promoted on the LGFB website, LGFB UK Youtube channel, as well as through leaflets and media activity. So we have created a new voluntary role – Community Fundraising Champion – which will help increase awareness and fundraising at a local level. These ‘Champions’ will essentially be the eyes and ears for LGFB’s fundraising team in the identification of potential fundraising initiatives, especially ‘charity of the year’ opportunities with local companies, groups and associations. They will also promote LGFB’s annual fundraiser ‘Feel Better Week’ to local communities, companies, organisations, schools and colleges. As one of our Honorary Life Presidents, Charles has worked with LGFB for most of our 21 years and really appreciates and endorses the positive effect of our services. BEAUTY UNBOUND We are delighted to have teamed up with member company, Hearst Magazines for their Beauty Unbound Campaign which was launched in the UK in April (May editions), to help raise awareness of Look Good Feel Better. This unique multi-platform ‘beauty takeover’ encompassed editorial and advertising across Hearst’s different magazines. All relevant titles included a #Warpaint4Life advert in their May editions and we’ve also been supported editorially with articles in print and online in Best, Red, ELLE, Prima, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping, Reveal, Sugarscape and Women’s Health. This has been a fantastic opportunity for us, resulting in increased website visits and social engagement. It has also strengthened our relationship with all the Hearst titles and we look forward to continuing to work with them on this annual activity. dates for your diary SEPT 5 TH OCTOBER DEC 14 TH Up at the O2 Climb Girls Night In! Annual Carol Concert Annette Finlay-Price Our incredibly dedicated and much-loved volunteer and Regional Co-ordinator, Annette Finlay-Price, supported LGFB since we launched at Maggie’s Centre in Edinburgh in 1996. She helped at over 500 workshops, reaching at least 5,000 women. She also started the Teen sessions at Edinburgh’s Sick Children’s Hospital – becoming known as the ‘Brow Lady’. Head of Programme Services, Lisa Curtis says: “Annette made an outstanding contribution to the charity, firmly establishing the service in Edinburgh and, over the years, also creating some exceptional fundraising events. She built a very close and dedicated team who will continue her legacy. Annette will be greatly missed by everyone associated with LGFB.”
