TheCamRangerdeviceisturnedonbyslidingthepowerswitch,locatedonthesideoftheunit,
towardsthefrontofthedevice.Thegreenpowerlightwillilluminatewhentheunitispowered
on.AnyaddiPonalswitchpresentontheCamRangercurrentlyservesnofuncPon.
Thechargingportislocatednexttothepower
switch.ThemalemicroBendoftheprovided
whitechargingcordisconnectedtothisport.The
otherendofthechargingcordcanbeconnected
toafemaleUSBportthatprovidespower,suchas
acomputerorthroughtheprovidedACadapter.
Whenthedeviceischarging,anaddiPonalyellow
lightwillilluminatenexttothegreenpowerlight
indicaPngthatitischarging.Theyellowlightwill
turnoffleavingonlythegreenpowerlightwhenit
isfullycharged.
TheCamRangerbaUeryisaccessiblebyremovingtheboUomcover.TheboUomcoveristhe
sidewiththeCamRangerserialnumber.Simplygraspthesideedge/cornerofthecovernear
theUSBconnectorandpullbacktoremove.Toreplacethecover,firstplacethetwolowertabs
intotheslotsandthensnapinthetop.
AblackneoprenecaseisprovidedtoassistinaUachingandsecuringtheCamRanger,notethat
thispouchisnotwaterproof.Thecasehasacarabineertofacilitatehangingfromatripod,belt
loop,etc.DonotjusthangtheCamRangerbythecableasitwillputstrainontheUSB
connectorsaswellaspossiblydisconnect.
Anyswitchontheoppositesideofthepowerswitchdoesnotcurrentlyhaveanyfunc5onality.

BeforeaMaccanbeusedwithaCamRanger,theapplicaPonshouldbeloadedontheMac,at
noaddiPonalcosttotheuser,fromtheMacapplicaPonstoreorfromtheCamRangerwebsite,
hUp://www.CamRanger.com/Downloads.Oncedownloaded,theCamRangerapplicaPonneeds
toberegistered.RegistraPonrequiresInternetconnecPvity.Beforeproceeding,confirm
InternetconnecPvity(donotconnecttotheCamRangernetwork).
LaunchtheCamRangerapplicaPonandthefollowingscreenappears.IftheregistraPonpop-up
doesnotappear,fromthe“Help”tabontheMacmenubar,click“Register,”andthefollowing
screenwillappear.
Enterthe8-characterCamRangerserialnumber.Theserialnumberislocatedbothonthe
boUomofthebackcoveraswellasabovethebaUeryunderneaththebackcover.Notethatthe
serialnumbercontainsonlyleUersandNOnumbers.
Pressthe“Register”buUontocompletetheregistraPonprocess.Amessageboxwillappear
indicaPngregistraPonwassuccessfulandtheMaccanbeusedwiththeCamRanger.Exitthe
applicaPonandthenproceedwiththesetupprocessasdetailedbelowintheCamRangerSetup
secPon.
IfregistraPonfails,confirmInternetconnecPvityandtheCamRangerserialnumberbefore

CamRangerSetup
PowerontheCamRangerandconfirmallfourlightsbrieflyappear.TheCamRangerwilltake
approximately30secondsunPlitisfullyiniPalized.
ThefirstPmetheuserconnectstoCamRangerfromaMac,theMacneedstoberegistered.See
theCamRangerRegistraPonsecPonabove.
Onceregistered,connecttotheCamRangernetworkontheMac.Thenetworknamewillbe
CamRanger-###,withthelastthreecharactersmatchingthelast3charactersofthe
CamRanger’sserialnumber.Enterthenetworkpassword,whichisthefull8charactersofthe
CamRanger’sserialnumber.ThepasswordMUSTBEENTEREDINALLCAPS.
ConnecttheCamRangertothecamerawiththeprovidedblackUSBcable(Note:units
purchasedthroughretailerswillhaveaUSBminicable,whichwillworkwithmostcameras.A
fewselectNikonsuseadifferentcable,whichmaybepurchasedseparatelyorthecablethat
camewiththecamerawillalsowork).ThemaleAendisinsertedintotheUSBportattheend
oftheCamRanger,andtheotherendisconnectedtotheUSBportofthecamera.Thenensure
thecameraisturnedon.Whenthecameraisconnectedandturnedon,thegreenlightclosest
totheedgeoftheCamRangerdevicewilllight.
LaunchtheCamRangerMacapplicaPon.TheapplicaPonwillconnecttotheCamRangerandthe
userwillbeabletocontrolthecamera.ToaUempttomanuallyiniPateaconnecPon,onthe
Macmenubar,click“ConnecPon”andthen“Connect.”Onceconnected,thefollowingscreen
willappear.

Athumbnailmaybeselectedtoviewthecorrespondingimage.Theimageisdownloadedand

outline.
WhenbothaJPGandRAWfileformatiscaptured,onlytheJPGthumbnailisdisplayed.
ForCanon,JPGandRAWfilescanbeviewed.ForNikon,JGPcanbeviewedwhiletheRAW
thumbnailwilldisplay,butwillnotbeshownatfullresoluPonwhenselected.Insteadall
NikonRAWfileswillbedisplayedinacompressedJPGversion.However,iftheimageis
saved,itwillsavethefullNEFfile.ViewingTIFFfilesisnotsupported.
Asmallred“R”iconontheupperrightofthethumbnailindicatesthatitisaRAWimage.A
smallgreen“T”indicatesTIFF,whilenoiconisusedtoindicateJPGformaUedimages.
Note:onlythumbnailsforimagescapturedwithinthecurrentCamRangersessionwillbe
displayed.
MainImageView
Liveviewandcapturedimagesaredisplayedwithinthemainimageview.
LiveViewImages
ToiniPateliveview,clickontheeyeballsymbollocatedwithinthecameraacPoncontrolsonthe
boUomrightoftheapplicaPonscreen.Inliveview,theimageonthescreenisautomaPcally
updatedasliveviewimagesstreamin.Theexactframepersecondrateisverymuchdependent
ontheCamRangerWiFisignalstrength,thecamera,andtheMacspecs.However,assuminga
goodconnecPon,theliveviewframeratewillbeabout7–18fps.
Wheninliveview,themainimageviewmaybeclickedoncetofocusatthatpoint.Notethatfor
Canoncameras,theouteredgesoftheimagecannotbefocusedon.Doubleclickingwillzoom
intheviewingwindowanddoubleclickingagainreturnstheimagetoregularsize.
Aliveviewhistogrammaybetoggledonorofffromthe“Data”tabasdescribedinthe
AdvancedTabDatasecPonfoundonpage9.Togglingthehistogramonwillgeneratea

histogramforeachliveviewframe;however,atthecostofadecreasedframerate.Togglethe
histogramofftomaximizetheframerate.
CanoncamerascandisplaytheliveviewimageonthecameraandMacandallowtheuserto
triggerimageswiththecamerabyacPvaPngthecamera’sliveviewbuUona9erstarPnglive
viewwithintheCamRangerapplicaPon.Nikoncamerasdonotallowanycontrolofthephysical
camerawhileliveviewisacPvewithintheCamRangerapplicaPon.
CapturedImages
Capturedimageswillbedisplayedinthemainimageviewinoneoftwoways,byselecPnga
thumbnailinthethumbnailssecPonoftheapplicaPonorthroughtheAuto-ViewImages
feature.TheAuto-ViewImagefeatureisusefulwhencapturingimagesfromthecameraand
usingtheMacapplicaPonforimagedisplay.Whenthisfeatureisselected,pictureswill
automaPcallydisplayinthemainimageviewscreen.Thisfeaturecanbeturnedonoroffby
selecPng“CamRanger”ontheMacCamRangermenubarandthen“CamRangerPreferences.”
FormoreinformaPonaboutthisfeature,refertotheCamRangerMenuBarPreferencessec*on
ofthisdocumentfoundonpage15.
Whenathumbnailisselectedforviewing,theimagewillbedisplayedonthemainimageview
andcanbezoomedinat50%,100%,200%,orfittoscreenbyselecPngthemagnificaPonof
interestbelowtheimage.Theimagecanthenbepannedusingthemouse.
ImagesdisplayedinthemainviewareNOTsavedbydefault,butareinsteadjusttemporarily
cached.IndividualimagescanbesavedbyselecPng“File”fromtheMacCamRangermenubar
andthen“Save”or“SaveAs”.ForfurthersavingopPonsincludingtheabilitytoautomaPcally
saveallpictures,refertotheCamRangerMenuBarPreferencessec*onofthisdocumentfound
onpage15.
Toviewtheimagesonthecamera’smemorycardselect“View”ontheMacCamRangermenu
barandthen“CardContents.”Anewwindowwillappeardisplayingthumbnailsoftheimages
onthecamera’sremovablemedia.Doubleclickingathumbnailwilldisplaytheimagewithinthe
mainimageview.AddiPonalfeaturesfordownloadingordelePngimagesarealsoavailable.For

Thefocustabisonlyenabledduringliveviewandprovides
advancedfocusingcontrols.
FocusAdjust
TherearetwosetsofbuUonstomovethelens’focalplane
nearerorfurtherfromthecamera.EachsethasthreebuUons
withdifferentsizedarrowstospecifyalarge,medium,orsmall
stepinfocus.TapthebuUontomovethefocusbyasingle
increment,holdingdownthebuUonwillhavenoaffect.
FocusStacking
FocusstackingisaprocessoftakingmulPplecaptureswithslight
changesinfocusandthenpostprocessingthemtoenhancethe
depthoffield.TheautomaPcfocus-stackingfeatureallowsthe
usertosetthefocusstepsizebetweenineachshotandthenumberofshotstotake.Eachfocus
stepwillmovethefocalplanefurtherfromthecamera.Sotheuserwillwanttosetthefocusto
thenearestplanedesiredtobeinfocusandstartthestackingprocessfromthere.Iftoofew
capturesaretaken,theprocesscanberestartedfromwheretheiniPalstackingended.Note:
thepostprocessingisnotdonewithintheCamRangerapplicaPon.

Timer
ThePmertaballowstheuseoftheCamRangerasan
intervalometeraswellasspecifyingexposurePmeswhenthe
cameraisinbulbmode.
TimeLapse
• TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniPaldelaybeforethe
firstshot,thenumberofshotstotake,andthedelayinbetween
eachshot.
• Aherconfiguringthesejngs,pressthe“Start”buUontobegin
theintervalometerprocess.
• TheintervalometercommandsarestoredontheCamRanger
device,theMacdoesnotneedtoremainonorconnectedoncetheintervalometercommand
isiniPated.
• The“ShotDelay”shouldnotbeusedforprecisionPming,parPcularlywhenthedelayisonlya
fewsecondsorless.
• IftheuserclosestheCamRangerappaheriniPaPngthePmelapseontheCamRanger,which
includesshotdelaysof2secondsorless,itmaybedifficulttorestarttheappsincethe

The“HDR”,orAdvancedBrackePng,tabcanbeusedtogenerateaseriesofphotoswithvarying
exposures.
• AdvancedBrackePngisonlyenabledwhenthecameraisin
Manualmode.
• ThePropertyfieldspecifiesthecamerapropertytobe
varied.TherearethreeopPons,ShuUerSpeed,Aperture,
andISO.
• TheIniPalDelayfieldspecifiestheamountofdelay,ifany,
totakebeforebeginningthebrackePngsequence.
• TheiniPalvaluefortheselectedpropertyissetwiththe
StartValuefield.
• Thetotalnumberofimagestocaptureisspecifiedbythe
NumberofShotsfield.
• ThepossibleStepSizevaluesareupto3stopsandspecify
thehowmanystopstovarytheexposurebetweeneachcapture.
• ThevalidvaluesfortheNumberofShotsareautomaPcallydeterminedbasedonthe
valuesspecifiedforStartValueandStepSize.Forexampleastepsizeof1/3stopswill
allowmoreshotsthanastepsizeof3stops.
• ThestarPngpointofthebracketissetwithinthesejngsandcanbeginattheshadows

middlecontrolthebrackePngamount.ClickingthearrowspoinPnginwillreducethebrackePng
amount,whilepressingthearrowspointoutwardwillincreasethebrackePngamount.
ThebrackePngisnotsetunPlthe“Set”buUonispressed.The“Close”buUonwilldismissthe

CameraAc0ons
Capture
• The“Capture”buUoniniPatesthecameratrigger.Theexactcamerabehaviorisdependenton
thecameraandcameraproperPes,mostimportantlythecapturemode.
• Formostcapturemodes,suchassingle,Pmer,orquietthebuUonperformstheimage
captureasexpected.Itshouldbenotedthatforsomecameras,advancedmodessuchas
remoteorPmerthebuUonwillbehaveassinglecapturemode.
• ConPnuouscapturemodediffersbetweenNikonandCanon.
• Nikon:AherselecPngaconPnuousdrivemodeadialogisdisplayedallowingtheusertoselect
thenumberofimagestocapture.WhentheCapturebuUonispressed,thatnumberof
imageswillbecaptured.
• Canon:WheninaconPnuousmode,pressingandholdingtheCapturebuUonbehavesinthe
samewayaspushingthephysicaltriggeronthecamera.

• TheAF/MFFocustogglebuUonallowstheusertochangethefocusingbetweenautoand
manualwithouthavingtophysicallyadjustthecamera.
• ThisAF/MFadjustmentisnotpossibleforallcamerasinallmodes.Forexample,someNikoncameras
arerequiredtobeconnectedin“PC”mode,whichisaccessiblebyselecPng“Connection”onthe
MacCamRangermenubarfollowedbyclicking“PC.”
• Aheranytouchorincrementalfocusingwhileinliveview,thefocusmodewillautomaPcally
aUempttoswitchtomanualfocussuchthattheuserspecifiedfocusisnotoverriddenbyauto
focusuponcapture.
LiveView
• The“LiveView”togglebuUonisusedtoturnliveviewonandoff.
• Whenliveviewison,themainimageviewisupdatedwithliveviewimagesaswellas
updaPngtheRGBhistogramintheDatatabiftheliveviewhistogramisturnedon.
• Note:runningliveviewisrelaPvelyintensiveandtheremaybeslightperformancelagsin

MovieMode
• The“MovieMode”togglebuUonisusedtoturnliveviewonandoff,butwithinmoviemode.
