switch.ThemalemicroBendoftheprovided

TheotherendofthechargingcordcanbeconnectedtoafemaleUSBportthatprovidespower,
suchasacomputerorthroughanACadapter.
Whenthedeviceischarging,ayellow/orangelightwillilluminateindicaSngthatitischarging.
Theyellow/orangelightwillturnoffleavingonlyagreenpowerlightwhenitisfullycharged.
Chargingtakesapproximately2hours.
TheCamRangerba_eryisaccessiblebyremovingthebo_omcover.Thebo_omcoveristhe
sidewiththeCamRangerserialnumber.Simplygraspthesideedge/cornerofthecovernearthe
USBconnectorandpullbacktoremove.Toreplacethecover,firstplacethetwolowertabsinto
theslotsandthensnapinthetop.
CamRangerisnotwater-resistantinanywayandshouldnotgetwet.
Ablackneoprenecaseisprovidedtoassistina_achingandsecuringtheCamRanger,notethat
thispouchisnotwaterproof.Thecasehasacarabineertofacilitatehangingfromatripod,belt
loop,etc.DonotjusthangtheCamRangerbythecableasitwillputstrainontheUSB
connectorsaswellaspossiblydisconnect.

BeforeanAndroiddevicecanbeusedwithaCamRanger,theapplicaSonshouldbeloadedon
theAndroiddevice,atnoaddiSonalcosttotheuser,fromtheGoogleplaystore.The
applicaSoncanalsobefoundonourwebsiteatwww.CamRanger.com/downlods.Once
downloaded,theCamRangerappneedstoberegistered.RegistraSonrequiresInternet
connecSvity.Beforeproceeding,confirmInternetconnecSvity(donotconnecttothe
CamRangernetwork).
LaunchtheAndroidCamRangerappandthefollowingscreenappears.(Note:ontheiniSal
registraSontheappmayskipthisscreenandproceeddirectlytothefollowingregistraSon
screen).
Pressthe“Register”bu_ontoloadtheregistraSonviewseenbelow.
Enterthe8-characterCamRangerserialnumber.Theserialnumberislocatedbothonthe
bo_omofthebackcoveraswellasabovetheba_eryunderneaththebackcover.Note:The
CamRangerdoesnotneedtobeonduringtheregistraSonstepandtheserialnumbercontains
onlyle_ersandNOnumbers.
Pressthe“Register”bu_ontoa_emptregistraSon.AmessageboxwillappearindicaSngthat
theregistraSonwassuccessful.TheAndroiddevicecannowbeusedwiththeCamRanger.The
followingscreenwillappear.AnyregisteredandavailableCamRangernetworkswillbelistedon
theupperleicornerofthepopupwindow.

ByselecSngtheappropriatenetworkandpressingthe“Connect”bu_on,theAndroiddevice
willconnecttotheCamRangernetwork.Note:ItisnotnecessarytogointotheAndroid
device’sInternetse[ngstoswitchtotheCamRangernetworkaierregistraSon.However,asa
troubleshooSngmethod,se[ngtheCamRangerWiFinetworkwithintheAndroidse[ngscan
bedone.
IfregistraSonfails,confirmInternetconnecSvityandtheCamRangerserialnumberbefore
[email protected].
CamRangerSetup
ThefirstSmetheuserconnectstotheCamRangerfromanAndroiddevice,theAndroiddevice
needstoberegistered.SeetheCamRangerRegistraSonsecSonaboveformoredetails.
WhenstarSngaCamRangersession,powerontheCamRanger,andconfirmallfourlightsbriefly
appearontheCamRangerunit.TheCamRangerwilltakeapproximately30-45secondsunSlitis
fullyiniSalized.
ConnecSngtotheCamRangernetworkcanbedoneinoneoftwoways:fromwithinthe
AndroidCamRangerapporwithinthedevice’sInternetse[ngs.
ToconnecttotheCamRangernetworkfromwithintheapp,whentheCamRangerappis
launched,thefollowingscreenwillappearlisSngtheavailableCamRangernetworks.

ByselecSngtheappropriatenetworkandpressingthe“Connect”bu_on,theAndroiddevice
willconnecttotheCamRangernetwork.
OnecanalsoaccesstheCamRangernetworkfromwithintheSe[ngsontheAndroiddevice.
TheSSIDwillbeCamRanger-###,withthelastthreecharactersmatchingthelast3charactersof
theCamRanger’sserialnumber.Thepasswordisthefull8charactersoftheCamRanger’sserial
number.ThepasswordMUSTBEENTEREDINALLCAPS.ThekeyboardonnewerAndroiddevices
canbeputintocapslockbydoubletappingtheshiikey.
OncetheAndroiddeviceisconnectedtotheCamRangernetwork,connecttheCamRangerto
thecamerausingtheprovidedblackUSBcable.ThemaleAendisinsertedintotheUSBportat
theendoftheCamRanger,andtheotherendisconnectedtotheUSBportofthecamera.Then
ensurethecameraisturnedon.Whenthecameraisconnectedandturnedonthegreenlight
closesttotheedgeoftheCamRangerdevicewilllight.
LaunchtheCamRangerAndroidapp.TheapplicaSonwillconnecttotheCamRangerandthe
userwillbeabletocontrolthecamera.EnsurethatyourcameraandCamRangerba_eryare
chargedwhenstarSngyourCamRangersession.Forcommonproblemswithsetupand
connecSonrefertotheTroubleshoo*ngsec*onofthismanualonpage30.

TheCamRangerAndroidappsupportsAndroidhand-helddeviceswith3.2soiwareandup.For
brevity,onlytheAndroidTabletportraitscreenshotswillbeshownthroughoutthemanual,as
theequivalentlandscapeorAndroidPhoneversionsareverysimilar.Anyplaceswhere
significantdifferencesexistwillbecalledout.

MainImageView
Liveviewandcapturedimagesaredisplayedwithinthemainimageview.
CapturedImages
Imageswillbedisplayedonthemainimageviewinoneoftwoways,byselecSngathumbnailin
thethumbnailssecSonorthroughtheAuto-Viewfeature.TheAuto-Viewfeatureisdescribedin
moredepthintheAdvancedSe[ngssecSon.
Itisimportanttonotethatthatimagesdisplayedinthemainviewarenotsavedbydefaultand
aresimplybeingdisplayed.TosavetheimagetotheAndroiddevice,refertotheAdvanced
Se<ngssec*onofthismanualonpage20.
Imagesmaybezoomedinto100%resoluSonbypullingyourfingersapartonthedevice’s
screenandcanbezoomedoutbypinchingyourfingersonthescreen.Whenzoomedin,the
imagecanbepannedbydraggingafinger.Pinchyourfingersonthescreentoreturntheview
toitsoriginalstate.
AsindicatedinthethumbnailssecSon,TIFFandCanonRAWimagescannotbeviewedwhile
NEFfilescanbeviewedascompressedJPGfiles.
LiveViewImages
Inliveview,theimageisautomaScallyupdatedasliveviewimagesstreamin.Theexactrateis
verymuchdependentonWiFisignalstrengthandthecameraandAndroiddevicespecs.
However,assumingagoodconnecSon,liveviewframeratewillbeabout7–18fpsdepending
onthecameramodel.
Duringliveviewtheimagemaybesingletappedtofocusatthatpoint.NotethatforCanon
cameras,theouteredgesoftheimagecannotbefocusedon.Pullyourfingersapartonthe
devicesscreentozoominandpinchyourfingerstogethertoagainreturnthescreentoregular
size.
AliveviewhistogrammaybetoggledonorofffromtheDatatabasdescribedintheAdvanced
DatasecSon.Togglingthehistogramonwillgenerateahistogramforeachliveviewframe;
however,atthecostofadecreasedframerate.Togglethehistogramofftomaximizetheframe
rate.
Canoncamerascandisplaytheliveviewimageonthecameraaswellasallowphysically
triggeringimagesbypressingthecamera’sliveviewbu_ona>erstarSngitontheCamRanger
app.NikoncamerasdonotallowanycontrolofthephysicalcamerawhileliveviewisacSve.

Focus
TheFocustabisonlyenabledduringliveviewandprovidesadvancedfocusingcontrols.

FocusAdjust
Therearetwosetsofbu_onstomovethelens’focalplanenearerorfurtherfromthe
camera.Eachsethasthreebu_onswithdifferentsizedarrowstospecifyalarge,
medium,orsmallstepinfocus.Tapthebu_ontomovethefocusbyasingleincrement,
holdingdownthebu_onwillhavenoaffect.
FocusStacking
FocusstackingisaprocessoftakingmulSplecaptureswithslightchangesinfocusand
thenpostprocessingthemtoenhancethedepthoffield.TheautomaScfocusstacking
featureallowstheusertosetthefocusstepsizetotakebetweenineachshotandthe
numberofshotstotake.Eachfocusstepwillmovethefocalplanefurtherfromthe
camera.Sotheuserwillwanttosetthefocustothenearestplanedesiredtobeinfocus
andstartthestackingprocessfromthere.Iftoofewcapturesaretaken,theprocesscan
berestartedfromwheretheiniSalstackingended.Note:thepostprocessingisnotdone
withintheCamRangerapp.
Timer
TheTimertaballowstheuseoftheCamRangerasanintervalometeraswellasspecifying
exposureSmeswhenthecameraisinbulbmode.
TimeLapse
• TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniSaldelaybeforethefirstshot,thenumberofshots
totake,andthedelayinbetweeneachshot.
• Aierconfiguringthese[ngs,pressthe“Start”bu_ontobegintheintervalometerprocess.
• TheintervalometercommandsarestoredontheCamRangerunitandtheAndroiddevice
doesnotneedtoremainonorconnected.
• The“ShotDelay”shouldnotbeusedforprecisionSming,parScularlywhenthedelayisonlya
fewsecondsorless.
• Onceanintervalometersequenceisbegun,itcanonlybecancelledbyturningoffpowerto
theCamRangerdevice.
• TimeLapse–Bulb
• Ifthecameraisinbulbmode/shu_erspeedandthecamerasupportsbulbshots,
CamRangerwilltakeBulbshotsduringtheSmelapse.ThebulbduraSonisspecifiedby
theShotDuraSon,locatedwithintheBulbsecSonimmediatelybelowtheTimeLapse
secSon.

Bulb
• TheBulbcontrolsareonlyenabledwhenthecameraisinbulbmodeandthecamerasupports
remotebulbshots.Note:forsomecameras,bulbmodeissetbychangingtheshu_erspeed
to“bulb.”
• TheentryfieldsareusedtospecifytheiniSaldelaybeforethefirstshotandthelengthofthe
exposure.
• AierconfiguraSon,pressthe“Start”bu_ontobeginthebulbprocess.
• ThebulbcommandsarestoredontheCamRangerdeviceandtheAndroiddevicedoesnot
needtoremainonorconnected.
HDR
The“HDR”,orAdvancedBrackeSng,tabcanbeusedtogenerateaseriesofphotoswithvarying
exposures.
• AdvancedBrackeSngisonlyenabledwhenthecameraisinManualmode.
• ThePropertyfieldspecifiesthecamerapropertytobevaried.TherearethreeopSons,Shu_er
Speed,Aperture,andISO.
• TheIniSalDelayfieldspecifiestheamountofdelay,ifany,totakebeforebeginningthe
brackeSngsequence.
• TheiniSalvaluefortheselectedpropertyissetwiththeStartValuefield.
• ThetotalnumberofimagestocaptureisspecifiedbytheNumberofShotsfield.
• ThepossibleStepSizevaluesareupto3stopandspecifythehowmanystopstovarythe
exposurebetweeneachcapture.
• Typicallythestepsizevaluesareinincrementsof1/3stops.However,thiscanvarybasedon
thecamerase[ngs.ForexampleifthecameraisconfiguredtoonlyallowISOvalues
correspondingtofullstops,thenthestepsizeincrementwillbe1stop.
• ThevalidvaluesfortheNumberofShotsareautomaScallydeterminedbasedonthevalues
specifiedforStartValueandStepSize.Forexampleastepsizeof1/3stopswillallowmore
shotsthanastepsizeof3stops.
• ThestarSngpointofthebracketissetwithinthese[ngsandcanbeginattheshadows
(lowestexposure),mid-point,orhighlights(highestexposure).IfthestarSngpointissetto
mid-point,theresulSngsequencewillstartatthelowestexposurebutwiththeiniSallyset
valueasthemid-point.SeetheAdvancedSe[ngssecSonformoreinformaSononse[ngthe

TheabovediagramindicateseachofthecameraproperSesthatcanbeset.NotallproperSes
canbesetforallcamerasorinallmodes.Forexample,thediagramisfromasessionwitha
CanoncameraandformostCanonsthecameramodecannotbeset.DisabledproperSesare
indicatedwithadarkerbu_onbackground.
NikonConnecDonMode
NikoncamerasallowconnecSonsintwodifferentmodes:“PC”and“Camera”(Seethe
AdvancedSe<ngsdialoginthismanualonpage21formoreinformaSononhowtochange
betweenthemodes).ThekeydifferenceisthatPCmodeallowstheCamRangerusertoadjust
properSesthatarecontrolledviaaphysicalswitchordialonthecamera,andwouldotherwise
bedisabledinCameramode.However,inPCmodenopropertychangesdonephysicallytothe
camerawillberecognizedandanychangesmadethroughCamRangerwillbelostaier
disconnecSng.PCmodealsopreventstriggeringimagesfromthecameraitself,andthe
CamRangerappmustbesettoCameramodetoallowphysicallytriggeringfromthecamera.It
shouldalsobenotedthattheconnecSonmodecannotbechangedwhileliveviewisacSve.
ExposureCompensaDon&BrackeDng
PressingthebrackeSngbu_onwilldisplaythefollowingcontrol:

PressingthearrowsatthetoprightandleimovestheexposurecompensaSon.Holdingdown
thearrowwillmovetheexposurecompensaSontoitsrespecSvelimit.Thetwobu_onsatthe
bo_ommiddlecontrolthebracketamount.PressingthearrowspoinSnginwillreducethe
brackeSngamount,whilepressingthearrowspointoutwardwillincreasethebrackeSng
amount.
ThebrackeSngisnotsetunSlthe“Set”bu_onispressed.The“Close”bu_onwilldismissthe
dialog.Pressing“Close”withoutpressing“Set”willeffecSvelycancelanyadjustmentsmade.

Capture
• The“Capture”bu_oniniSatesthecameratrigger.Theexactcamerabehavioris
dependentonthecameraandcameraproperSes,mostimportantlythecapturemode.
• Formostcapturemodes,suchassingle,Smer,orquietthebu_onperformstheimage
captureasexpected.Itshouldbenotedthatforsomecameras,advancedmodessuchas
remoteorSmerwillbehaveassinglecapturemode.
• ConSnuouscapturemodediffersbetweenNikonandCanon.
• Nikon:AierselecSngaconSnuousdrivemodeapickerisdisplayedallowingtheuser
toselectthenumberofimagestocapture.WhentheCapturebu_onispressed,that
numberofimageswillbecaptured.
• Canon:WheninaconSnuousmode,pressingandholdingtheCapturebu_onbehaves
inthesamewayaspushingthephysicaltriggeronthecamera.
• Itisnotedthattherecanbeaveryslightlagbetweenthepressingofthe“Capture”bu_on
andtheimagecapture.ThedelaycanbemorepronouncedwhileliveviewisacSve.For
SmecriScalapplicaSons,aremotetrigger,suchasanRFtrigger,canbeusedin
combinaSonwiththeCamRanger.
LiveView
• The“LiveView”togglebu_onisusedtoturnliveviewonandoff.
• Whenliveviewison,themainimageviewisupdatedwithliveviewimagesaswellas
updaSngtheRGBhistogramintheDatatabiftheliveviewhistogramisturnedon.
• Note:runningliveviewisrelaSvelyintensiveandtheremaybeslightperformancelagsin
otherareas.
MovieMode
• The“MovieMode”togglebu_onisusedtoturnliveviewonandoff,butwithinmovie
mode.
• Whenmoviemodeison,themainimageviewisupdatedwiththeliveimages.

thenstoptherecordingofamovie.
• Note:moviescannotbedownloadedtotheAndroiddevice.
Auto/ManualFocusToggle
• TheAF/MFFocustogglebu_onallowstheusertochangethefocusingbetweenautoand
manualwithouthavingtophysicallyadjustthecamera.
• ThisAF/MFadjustmentisnotpossibleforallcamerasinallmodes.Forexample,some
Nikoncamerasarerequiredtobeconnectedin“PC”mode.
• Aieranytouchorincrementalfocusingwhileinliveview,thefocusmodewill
automaScallya_empttoswitchtomanualfocussuchthattheuserspecifiedfocusisnot
overridebyautofocusuponcapture.

GeneralSeKngs
• ClientMode:Removesallcameracontrolsfromthemaindisplaysuchthatcamerase[ngs
cannotbechangedorthecameracontrolled.
• ConnecSonMode(NikonOnly)
• AtoggleswitchisprovidedtochangetheconnecSonmodebetween“PC”and“Camera”
• PC:PCmodeallowsmorecontroloverproperSeswithinCamRanger;however,some
