connection. We are so blessed
here at the shore!
At every prayer service, we
get to thank God “al nisecha
sheb’chol yom imanu; for Your
miracles that are with us each
day.” Our Jewish lives offer a
wealth of opportunity for
gratitude and gratification, insight and inspiration,
spirituality and celebration. We can learn about our
religious observances, our sacred writings and our place in
the world. We can interpret our texts and express our
traditions through prayer, music, story, art and theater. We
can enrich our lives, and those of others, in services and in
schmoozing, in learning and in laughing, in social
gatherings and in social action.
As we approach the High Holy Days, we should take at
least a few moments to consider where we’ve been, where
we are and where we would like to go. As we head into
the new year and into the fall, I hope that you will make
Beth Judah a key part of your religious and social worlds.
We at Beth Judah share with and care for one another,
for our Jewish community and the great world around us.

information. Yamim Nora’im, our Days of Awe, our High
Holidays, are the culmination of a month-long period of
time for study and self-examination, time of t’shuvah,
t’fillah, tz’dakah, which are repentance, prayer and just
and proper action. Now is the time to become more
Judaically knowledgeable Jewish women in the home,
synagogoue, community and Israel. This year may we
have a Rosh Hashanah dedicating ourselves to
perpetuation of Conservative Judaism by further educating
ourselves and creating a role model of ourselves that
others may emulate. From our home to yours L’shanah

Todd M Cohen thanks all who attended services when he
paid tribute to his loving memory of his parents, Frank and
Annell “Nancy” Cohen, in honor of their 57th anniversary, by
chanting Haftorah. Todd invites you to attend services on
Shabbat, October 25, when he is reading Torah in loving
memory of his wonderful parents, Frank and Annell “Nancy”
Cohen, and his dad’s 81st birthday and in honor of Todd’s 55th
birthday. Todd also leads daily minyan services on Wednesday

Preschool
It is my pleasure to inform you that students in Beth Judah
Preschool had a wonderful and successful 2013-2014 school year.
A lot of our children stayed on to enjoy the “Jewel of the Isle”
Summer Fun 2014 Program.
Or senior counselors were Lolly Eidelson and Sandy McDowell.
Our junior counselors were Samantha Bryton and Kate Beck. We
were very fortunate to have Samantha Harris volunteering. Junior
volunteers were Rayna Bozzuto (Morah Sandy’s granddaughter)
and Hillary Poetsch. I thank them for their dedication and hard work
in making our summer camp safe and fun for all.
Now we look forward to our Beth Judah Preschool year.
We are now licensed for a one-year-old program and look forward
to welcoming this newest group into our school. Any donations of
portable cribs or high chairs will be gladly accepted.
Enrollment for 1-5 year olds is ongoing. We have classes for each
grade level and look forward to a productive, fun year.
If you know families who are looking for a warm, loving school
with individual attention to each child’s needs, please pass on this
information and ask them to contact me.

Hazzans
Message
Life is always full of
challenges. After each one,
we should pause for a
moment to reflect on what
we have learned about
ourselves, the strength that
we indeed have to face it,
and how we have become
better and stronger because of it. This has certainly
been a challenging year for me, having never had a
surgery, and now having had two. I now understand
how challenging recuperation can be, and have
learned a great deal about myself and others. I am
amazed at the inner strength of those who fight
chronic illness or life-threatening diseases. I am
astonished by the grace that those with disabilities use
to face daily challenges. I am overwhelmed by how
difficult a wide range of daily living tasks can be. I
am thankful for a loving and compassionate family
who were very patient, and for congregants, friends
and even complete strangers who showed kindness. In
the end, however, I am grateful to God.
It is easy to blame God for illness, but I don’t believe
in that way. God does not sit in some galactic throne
room programming the trials and tribulations of all of
the inhabitants of our planet. God is the One I turned to
in time of need to provide strength, comfort and
support, and I am grateful that I felt God’s presence
with me, which was of immense comfort to me.
I know that God was, and is, there for me in time of
need, and the same is true for all of us. There are
those who might say: “Well you’re the Hazzan, so
you know how to contact God and hold a
conversation.” The answer is less complex than you
might imagine: God is there each and every day for
all of us. You can speak to God in any language, at
any time (God is the original 24/7, although God does
rest on Shabbat). While I cannot tell you that you will
get an e-mail, text or candy-gram from God, just the
fact that you are willing to talk to God opens the
doors to possibilities. I cannot describe to you how I
felt God’s presence, because that was personal and
may only apply to me, but I can reassure you that God
is there. You just have to be willing to try and be
receptive.
As the new year of 5775 is upon us, and believe me
when I say that I look forward to saying farewell to
5774, we have an opportunity to refresh and revise. I
encourage you to explore ways to seek God’s
presence. At least start by putting out the welcome
mat. Janice, Rachel, Aaron and I wish you a new year
that fulfills all your wishes and desires.

From Our President
The year 5774 has been an interesting
one for Beth Judah to say the least. It has
been a time for some soul searching and
introspection, defining direction, and
pursuing new opportunities. Of course,
the primary experience that I am referring
to is the rabbi search process which led to
the appointment of Jonathan Kremer as
our new Rabbi who assumed our pulpit on August 1st. We are
very excited about the enthusiasm and abilities that Rabbi
Kremer brings to Beth Judah and we look forward to new,
interesting, and engaging programs and services. Already, there
is a new atmosphere around our shul. I ask you to make a
special effort to attend a service or an event that haven’t
traditionally attended to see what we are doing.
Autumn is always a transitional time of the year. Not only does
the weather change but it is, of course, packed with Jewish
holidays and observances. Naturally, my favorite part of that is
the anniversary of my Bar Mitzvah which comes on Hol Hamoed
Sukkot, the intermediate Shabbat during Sukkot. But, whether
you attend services only a couple of times a year or you are a
regular at Shabbat or weekday services, it is a time when we can
get a lot out of our Jewishness with very little investment.
Whether it is a walk on a quiet beach in October or a drive to see
the leaves change, it is easy to leave the rest of the world behind
for a few hours and enjoy some of what nature has to offer. If you
are lucky enough to have that opportunity, please let me suggest
that you take a minute and say the She’hechianu, the prayer that
we say that thanks G-d for keeping us alive, sustaining us, and
enabling us to reach this occasion. Although just saying that
familiar prayer will not be a life-changing episode, it will, in all
likelihood, enhance your appreciation for the things you have
and maybe, just maybe, you’ll feel that little extra tinge of
spirituality that so many of us feel.
Please accept my sincere wish for a happy, healthy, and
peaceful 5775. May the New Year bring you all good things and
an increased feeling of belonging and comfort at Beth Judah.

We are beginning 5775 with lots of excitement. Our 19th
Annual ProAm Golf Tournament is Wednesday, September 3, at
Linwood Country Club. If you are a golfer and want to join us,
call Ethel, 822 7116 ext 102, immediately. There may still be an
opening for you and/or your foursome.
Hold Saturday evening, October 11, for our infamous Steak
and Scotch night. Spouses and significant others are welcome.
Expanded menu over last year. Musical entertainment to add to
the ambiance. Scotch of many brands. Details will reach you
by email.

Rarely in one’s lifetime is an
opportunity presented where one
hears the good things others feel about them. Thanks to
our President, Bruce Peskoe, who, with the approval of
our Executive Committee, came to me about celebrating
my 25th Anniversary with Beth Judah. He chose
chairpeople, Gayle and Hank Winkler (a Board
member), who then chose their committee to put this
event together. There are no words to describe my feelings
of gratitude to Gayle and Hank for a spectacular morning.
Their committee, listed below, with their guidance,
provided me with an event that will stand out in my
memory forever, provided Beth Judah with an opportunity
to shine like a silver quarter, and brought together three
hundred people plus who truly did honor me through
attendance, our Tribute book, and support of the event in
many ways. It was thrilling to hear the kind words anyone
would want to hear about themselves while they are
living. I thank you all for the dedication of our
Administrative wing in my honor. It means an awful lot to
me. Being here 25 years has been my honor and privilege
and I hope to be here for as long as I am able, with the
promise that my door is always open to you.

and my friends and family. Kudos go to Derrick, Peggy
and Nicole for assistance in setting up and advising where
to order so much of what was used that morning. To
Rabbi Gaber, Hazzan Myers, Cantor Kulp and Avrum
Glassoff, thank you for doing what you do so well. Thank

Jewish Community Selichot
Program & Services
Join us as we prepare
ourselves to welcome the
New Year of 5775. We are
excited to host, FOR THE FIRST
TIME, this community-wide event
featuring a brief Havdalah Service
beginning at 8:45 p.m. (Sept. 20) with a
warm and uplifting program of Jewish song
and storytelling performed by the remarkable
and renown duo, Rabbi Cantor Mark Novak
and Renée Brachfeld, from 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m, followed
by a delicious offering of a dessert buffet. The Jewish
Community Selichot Service itself, featuring the region’s
Rabbis and Cantors, including our own Rabbi Fox and
High Holiday Hazzan, Rabbi LaPayover, begins at a
little after 10:30 p.m. and lasts approximately one hour.
To make this amazing evening the most
accessible to all of our guests, there will be FREE BUS
TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM THE JCC IN
MARGATE at 7:45 p.m. for the program followed by
services and at 9:30 p.m. if just coming to services. The
bus will return to the JCC after services at 11:30 p.m.

Rabbi Cantor Mark
Novak has spent decades
delighting audiences with
his voice and music, in
solo performances or
with his bands. Renée
Brachfeld is a noted storyteller whose works have been
published in most prominent anthologies of Jewish
Stories; she has performed in front of large audiences
and small venues for many years. Together, these
incredible talents have brought their unique blend of
Jewish story, song, and learning to more than 130
synagogues and Jewish venues across North America.

Welcome Rabbi Jonathan & Ellie Kremer!
Congregation Beth Judah is
delighted to welcome Rabbi
Jonathan and Ellie Kremer to our
congregational family. Having lived
in the Philadelphia area for a
significant number of years, Rabbi
and Ellie Kremer are very excited to
establish their new home at the shore.
Prior to coming to Congregation
Beth Judah, Rabbi Jonathan Kremer
served Beth Israel Congregation in
Lexington Park, Maryland, where, among other innovations, he
invigorated services with lively prayer and Torah discussion and held
“open hours” every Shabbat afternoon.
Rabbi Kremer was ordained and earned an MA in Bible at the Jewish
Theological Seminary in New York. During rabbinical school, he spent
a semester in Jerusalem, participated in an intensive week-long
interfaith seminar at the Hartford (Connecticut) Seminary and attended
a Berlin-based program on contemporary German-Jewish relations.
Before rabbinical school, he was a graphic designer specializing in
Jewish nonprofits. His ability to meet their particular needs was
enhanced by an education that included day schools, Ramah overnight
camps, a BA in Hebraic Studies (Rutgers College, with junior year at the
Hebrew University, Jerusalem), and an MFA in Graphic Design (Tyler
School of Art, Temple University, where he was a Conwell Fellow).
Judaic art has long been an outlet for Rabbi Kremer’s creative
interpretations and expressions of text and tradition. He has produced a
wide range of calligraphic art such as decorated ketubot (marriage
contracts), graphic prints and other works, including six-foot-tall
mezuzot made of laser-cut steel and two limited-edition artist books
based on Biblical texts. Rabbi Kremer has led seminars on ritual items
and on art and craft in Jewish education.
He and his beloved muse and collaborator Ellie, an occupational
therapist, raised three daughters — Aviva, Hannah and Devora — of
whom they are most proud (just ask!). Rabbi and Ellie Kremer are
excited about becoming part of the Beth Judah community!
How Can You Get to know Rabbi Kremer and Ellie?
– Attend the Shabbat morning service and stay after for a relaxed
Kiddush nosh and informal conversation.
– Volunteer to host an informal gathering at your home. Invite your
friends over to meet Kremers for some meaningful talk about our
congregation, to let Rabbi know of your feelings for Beth Judah and to
hear of his vision and ideas in an intimate relaxed setting over morning
coffee, afternoon tea or evening dessert. Thank you to those who have
already hosted the first Meet & Greet get togethers. To volunteer as a
host, please be in touch as soon as possible with Sheila or Judy or phone
the office to schedule a date for a get together after Yom Kippur. Include
email contact and phone number.

introduce yourself or set up an appointment to meet. He would love to
hear from you!

take a book – but please bring it back when you’re done, and if
you have a book you’d like to share, leave it.

Directions to Temple Beth Shalom from Atlantic City and
Downbeach Communities
Take Atlantic or Ventnor Avenue to Albany Avenue (near the
Knife and Fork). Take a left on Albany, then a right on
Winchester Avenue, which turns into Arctic. Stay on Arctic
to Mississippi Avenue. Turn left on Mississippi (avoid extreme
right or left lanes). Go straight for a long block (you will see a
sign for Brigantine) and continue straight past Fairmount
Avenue to merge with traffic exiting the AC Expressway.
Follow the winding road you’re on around past the train
station (avoid right exit-only lane immediately after train
tracks) and through the tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel in
the right lane, continue in your lane toward Exit G for
Brigantine, BUT stay in your lane (now it is the left of two
lanes). Once you’re over the Bridge, take a right at the first
traffic light onto Harbor Beach Boulevard. Make a left in
about 0.2 miles onto 45th Street. Follow 45th Street for 0.1
miles — Temple Beth Shalom will be on your left. (Park in
the parking lot or on the Street.) B’ruchim Ha-Ba’im!
Directions to Temple Beth Shalom from the Mainland
Communities
Take either New Road (Route 9) or Shore Road north to
Delilah Road. Make a right on Delilah and continue into the
merge on Route 30 (White Horse Pike). Stay in the left or
center lane and follow the exit that splits off to the left to
Brigantine. Upon reaching the top of the ramp, move into
the center lane and continue in that lane toward Exit G for
Brigantine, BUT stay in your lane (now it is the left of two
lanes). Once you’re over the Bridge, take a right at the first
traffic light onto Harbor Beach Boulevard. Make a left in

FREE PROGRAM! It can’t get any better than this! You don’t have to spend any extra
money to participate. Most of these programs require you to purchase a debit card from
us to use at the store, just like you would use cash or your credit card. Supermarkets
allow you to purchase medications with the card as well as your groceries. The
synagogue receives between 5 and 10 percent of whatever is purchased by the
congregant.
Currently there are over 50 congregation families who have participated, either
regularly or sporatically, in one or more of these programs. Through their efforts, we
have already generated a few thousand extra dollars. If every family unit purchases an
average of $200 each month, we would generate more than $30,000 during the year!
If you have never particpated in one of these programs, please speak with Ethel Levinson
or David Seitman to learn about the benefits and how easily you can help out.
