WORKS WILL BEGIN IN 2013
Punta del Este is the main
international seaside resort of
South America. It is located in the
Atlantic coast of the República
Oriental del Uruguay, 130 km
from the country’s capital city,
Montevideo.
The Uruguayan government
called upon an international
tender for the construction and
management of the Convention
Center and Trade Fairground of
Punta del Este, works will begin
in 2013 and it is expected to be
fully operational by 2014.
The deadline for submission of
projects is November 30, 2012.
The selected bidder will earn the
right to manage the Centre until
2031, extendable to 2041.
It is a meeting point for tourists
and an important international
forum of business for major
companies.
Its tourist and hotel infrastructure
is of the highest level, on par
with the world’s most important
seaside resorts.
The decision of the national
and departmental Governments
to tackle the project of the
Convention Center and Trade
Fairground, is implemented
within the framework of the
Land Use Planning Law, which
regulated by the local government
of Maldonado, is transformed into
an Urban Plan that includes the
recovery of Wetlands, a new Bus
Terminal, a University Campus, a
400-hectare Public Park, a twoway bypass and a new building
code, under the name of “Eje
Aparicio Saravia”.
The Convention Center and Trade
Fairgrounds’layout was designed
by the prestigious architect Carlos
Ott. The aforementioned will be
adjusted to the requirements of
the successful bidder.
The public investment to
complete the project will be
of US$ 40 million and will be
composed of funds from the
national budget and from the
local government of Maldonado.
Its construction will be funded
by the State, who will contribute
with up to U$S 25 million. The
value of the land, the cost of
the architectural project and
promotional funds, complete
a total investment of U$S 40
million.
The international call seeks to
meet the unsatisfied demand
that the country has for the
organization of congresses, trade
fairs and meetings. The facilities
of the new infrastructure will
generate new opportunities for
real estate activities, will induce
the generation of new human
capital and promote the countrybrand UruguayNatural.
The amount of interested
parties in investing in this
project constitutes a favorable
and important indicator of the
transformation process of tourism
in Uruguay.

International tender for the construction of
a Convention Center and Trade Fairground in Punta del Este
Convention Center And Trade Fairground
A trust fund was created in
order to complete the work: The
local government of Maldonado
will serve as the settlor, the
Government, through the
Ministries of Economics and
Finance and Tourism and Sport,
will integrate the Management
Committee of the trust, and the
National Corporation for the
Development is the fiduciary
and will be responsible for
monitoring the construction and
business plan.
The project’s capacity involves a
plenary hall for 2,600 congress
members and complementary
rooms for 1,200 participants.
The fairground, in its first stage,
provides 6,000 square meters,
which could be extended
to 18,000 square meters,
characteristics that will make it a
unique complex in the region.
