History of New Ulm New Ulm, the City of “Charm and Tradition,” is nestled just 90 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, in the heart of the scenic Minnesota River Valley. The idea for the City of New Ulm, a settlement of German immigrants, was conceived by Frederick Beinhorn in Germany. Beinhorn came to America in 1852. By 1853, he was in Chicago where he and a group of other German immigrants formed the “Chicago Land Society.” In 1854, the site of the present New Ulm was selected by the advance group. The name, New Ulm, was selected because many of the original settlers were from the Province of Wurttemberg, Germany, of which Ulm is the principal city. In 1856, Wilhelm Pfaender arrived in New Ulm with members of the Turner Colonization Society of Cincinnati. The two groups merged, and in 1857, the town of New Ulm was incorporated by an act of the Legislature. The City of New Ulm was important in Minnesota’s history. The first steamboats passed by New Ulm in 1853, going upriver with troops to lay out the site for Fort Ridgely. For the next 20 years, boats brought settlers, freight, Indian supplies and gold to the area. The Indians mingled freely with New Ulm settlers in those days. Much trading was done between the Indians and the settlers of New Ulm. New Ulm was nearly overrun in the Dakota Conflict of 1862. New Ulm survived two separate sieges in August of 1862. A few buildings, which still stand along Minnesota Street, served as a refuge for residents and nearby settlers. In 1870, New Ulm survived another disaster, an infestation of grasshoppers. The grasshoppers brought the people to the point of starvation. In 1881, a cyclone also caused great devastation to the City of New Ulm. With the election of New Ulm’s John Lind as the 14th governor of Minnesota in 1899 came significant cultural, social and political influence. The town grew in education, sports, entertainment and music. Wanda Gag, an internationally recognized artist and author of children’s books (e.g., Millions of Cats) was born in New Ulm on March 11, 1893. The German heritage of New Ulm is evident in the architecture, and especially in the neatness and care given to trim yards and well-kept houses and store fronts. New Ulm, when laid out by the German Land Society’s plans, was given a precise layout of streets and parks which provide a variety of recreational opportunities. New Ulm is a progressive town, with agriculture, industries, retail stores, parochial and public schools (including a private college), and a population of nearly 14,000 people. New Ulm Visitor’s Guide 2008 17 Attractions New Ulm Battery The New Ulm Battery is a civilian artillery unit of Civil War vintage -- believed to be the only one of its kind in the United States. It was formed as a defensive measure in January, 1863, six months after the Dakota attacks in the area, to protect New Ulm from any further attacks. The city was not attacked again, and the group has yet to fire a shot in anger. The unit’s 42 members dress in uniforms of Civil War vintage. Their equipment consists of three Civil War cannons, a howitzer, three caissons (the vehicles that carry the ammunition) and several sabers. The cannons are used for firing salutes and when the unit goes on special maneuvers. The mobile equipment is all horsedrawn. Eight teams (16 horses) carry the officers. The enlisted men ride on the seats of the equipment. No one walks. In 1914 the unit was turned over to the city, which has maintained it as a living bit of history ever since. The pageantry of its firing drill is an exciting sight to see. The Battery performs on Memorial Day and July Fourth and is always the highlight of any parade. You can walk by and see Battery items at 1st North & Broadway. The New Ulm Battery accepts local and out-of-town engagements. For more information contact John W. This memorial, designed by C. J. Schmidtke, received recognition in a national trade magazine for its unique features. The project was initiated and developed by the Brown County Veterans Council. This memorial was presented to Brown County as a lasting tribute to past, present, and future veterans who honorably served in the Armed Services of the United States of America during periods of peacetime and designated periods of armed conflict. The Eternal Flame, funded by a grant from the New Ulm Area Foundation, was installed in 2001 to draw attention to the memorial in recognition of those men and women who served to preserve freedom in the free nations of the world. There are currently about 2,000 commemorative paver blocks placed at the memorial site, with an expanded area that will accommodate an additional 1,000 paver blocks. Before it was completed, the defenders of New Ulm destroyed it to prevent Times: its use by the Dakota Indians as a 7 a.m.-5 p.m. barricade during the 1862 U.S.daily Dakota conflict. It was after this conflict that Michael Lauterbach transferred two lots to Bishop Thomas L. Grace of St. Paul, for the site of the new church. In April of that year, the first load of bricks was delivered on the site of the present middle school building for the New Ulm Area Catholic Schools. The cornerstone for the new church was laid on Sept. 1, 1866. In December 1868, Father Alexander Berghold was assigned as the first Catholic pastor to New Ulm. He saw the completion of a 36’ by 97’ church topped by a steeple. The new church was dedicated by Bishop Grace on Sept. 11, 1870. Eleven years later on July 15, 1881, a tornado destroyed the church. By September 1888, money had been raised for the present church building. The cornerstone was laid on May 4, 1890, the steeple was added in 1893, and the interior decorations were completed in 1903. The walls of the Cathedral contain numerous paintings of saints and religious scenes from the life of Jesus and the saints. In the sanctuary there is a painting of the Trinity and the 12 apostles. The original artist commissioned to decorate the church was Alexander Schwendinger who was assisted by Christ Heller and Anton Gag, the father of Wanda Gag, famous New Ulm children’s author and artist. On Nov. 18, 1957, it was announced that the Church of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm was to be the new Cathedral for the diocese that had been created by Pope Pius XII in southern Minnesota. Bishop Alphonse J. Schladweiler was ordained the first bishop of the New Ulm Diocese in this Cathedral on Jan. 30, 1958, followed by Bishop Raymond A. Lucker in 1976, and Bishop John C. Nienstedt, in 2001. On May 4, 1997, the newly renovated lower level was blessed and dedicated as Leifeld Hall, in honor of deceased Monsignor Antony Leifeld, former pastor. Also in 1997, an Angel Garden, located between the church and parish offices, was dedicated to the memory of children from the parish who have died. Although some people are led to believe these “German” garden gnomes originated in Germany, their origin is actually in Turkey. They first appeared as stone representations in the 1300’s symbolizing slaves working in mines. In the 14th century they were brought to Italy and from there to Germany in 1420, where they developed into the gnomes as we know them today. The Heinzelmännchen family includes Hans, his wife Carolla, their son Johann and daughter Angelika. These gnomes, along with Gertie Goose and the Morel Mushrooms, turn up at most festivals and gatherings. Be sure to be on the lookout for them. Meet the Narren The Narren of New Ulm are eager to greet each and every visitor! They love to dance, “smile” for photos and entertain children of all ages. Look for Hattie the Prairie Wanderer or Tanta Anna in her lovely green dress. There’s Pinella the Flower Lady, Tillie the Feder Frau, Fritz the Sausage Man, Juergen the Pickleman, Rosa the Baker, Schlaukopf the Hex, Louis the Fur Trader, Katrinia the Wasserdame, the brothers Otto and Gunther, the Royal Baron and Baroness, Krauselein the Chef, Sepp the nonmusical Musician, Gusty the Festival Wind, Sophia the Seamstress, Schatzie the Bookkeeper, Poppy Ping the popcorn lady, Happy, Heilligie Kuh and Elsie. The Narren (masked) characters have been appearing at New Ulm and other festivals since 1989. With their hand-carved wooden masks and colorful costumes, they can be found mingling with the crowd or leading a snake dance. They invite the children to hear their stories, learn their dances and meet each Narren. Each Narren has his or her own unique personality and story, and is often looked upon as “the relative everybody has but nobody wants to claim.” For more information, contact the Chamber of Commerce, P 0 Box 384, New Ulm, MN 56073 (507) 233-4300. The Concord Singers “Festive German Music” The Concord Singers were founded in 1931 and have been dubbed New Ulm’s “Ambassadors of Good Will.” The singers began as a group of men united in the love of song and today are at the forefront of promotions to establish New Ulm as a tourism destination. They have performed in Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Great Britain, and extensively in America. The Concord Singers have appeared numerous times on radio and television and have recorded eight all-German albums, cassettes and CD’s. With their extensive repertoire of “Festive German Music,” the Concord Singers are asked to perform many times each year and often appear for visiting tour groups viewing New Ulm’s famous Glockenspiel. Christmas trees, Advent wreaths, nutcrackers, and many other traditions can be discovered in many of our attractions, homes and shops. Natural decorations are a city tradition in New Ulm since 1925. Driving through the residential areas of New Ulm is like driving through a Christmas fantasy land. Millions of tiny lights decorate the homes sharing the Christmas spirit city-wide. Surrounding the Glockenspiel clock and park are tiny white lights giving the park a magical look. The Christmas Parade of Lights heralds the official arrival of Santa Claus to New Ulm. Shouting and asking the Mayor to come out of City Hall, if he does not heed their request, the Narren will proceed to his office to capture him. He will then be dressed in Fasching clothes, tied up, and a Proclamation read to the people of New Ulm proclaiming a holiday with the beginning of Fasching. With bells ringing and music playing they will walk to various businesses in the City, advising all to share in the fun and festing, drinking and merrymaking of the Fasching season. Fasching is an old carnival tradition that has remained alive in Germany. It is typical to use elaborate, beautifully carved wooden masks to add to the fun of the activities. It’s time for the people to celebrate, and by masking, people of all backgrounds are able to mix and share in the fan. There are many different festivals and customs in the various regions of Germany, but they all refer to the “tolle Tage” (crazy days) before Lent begins and the participants are all considered Narren (fools). For a unique experience, visit downtown to see the streets adorned with strips of cloth strung across the streets in accordance with an old German peasant tradition. Fasching, in New Ulm continues on Saturday, February 2, with musical entertainment at Turner Hall from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Narren feel that it is important to keep the German tradition of Fasching alive, not only for the adults, but the children as well. They perform at many local functions, encouraging participation by getting us into their dance lines. Come, join the Narren in the fun. It will be fun for ALL ages! Involving the talents of our youth through senior members of the community, NUACT offers a springboard to participants and audience alike. All the way from taking tickets to constructing sets, there is something for everyone besides just the “old song and dance”! From forgetful nuns to Jane Austen, straight lines to harmonizing, NUACT brings to its family audience a varied array of classics, musicals and comedies. Reaching back to New Ulm’s cultural start, this organization is proud to sponsor and support other theatrical efforts by bringing in workshops and artists from other areas in addition to our regional talents. For more information on upcoming productions, events and opportunities, please visit our website at www.nuact.org or email: [email protected]. Our beautiful and historic community is one of only a few cities in Minnesota to receive this designation! In addition, New Ulm’s downtown has been granted status as a National Register Historic District due to the buildings and history that have been preserved here. Of special note are several buildings that survive from the 1862 Dakota Conflict, when the town was devastated as two pitched battles were fought in the barricaded downtown between settlers and the Dakota Indians. The surviving buildings are the Kiesling House at 220 N. Minnesota St. (current home of the Council for the Arts in New Ulm), the Erd Building at 108 N. Minnesota St. (one of few brick buildings that played a key role in the defense of New Ulm) and the Frederick Forster Building at 117 North Broadway (current home of Antiques Plus), the oldest surviving commercial building in New Ulm. We hope that you will take the time to stop at the New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce or the Brown County Historical Society (our 1909 Post Office built in the German Renaissance style) and pick up a walking tour brochure covering our historic commercial center and some of our beautifully kept and restored homes on German Street and South Broadway.
