We want to maintain a top quality publication that hotels can be proud to

Your hotel has arranged for Presenting Magazine to be made available at no
charge to their guests as an added service. The advertisers promoted in the
magazine make it all possible and welcome you to the area and their
businesses. So please give them a try. Presenting Magazine is meant to serve
as a useful overview of the most needed, or hopefully interesting,
information for a short term visitor to the area. Consider this a good list of
many of the best, but far from all of the things to do, places to dine and
areas to shop. The area is far too rich in possibilities and our visitors too
diverse in their interests to get it all between the covers of a single magazine.
We want to continue to make Presenting Magazine the premier in-room
hotel magazine. If you have any suggestions or ways we may improve,
please let us know. Our contact information is listed on this page.
We would also like you to help us welcome Rick and
Jan O’Bryant to our staff. Rick is our Vice President
of Sales for the Ventura County region. He brings
over 25 years of local sales and publishing experience
to our organization.
We look forward to hearing from you.

COMMUNITY GUIDE - AGOURA HILLS, THOUSAND OAKS, WESTLAKE VILLAGE
Westlake Village
Westlake Village is a very well-planned
community that boasts award-winning
neighborhoods, thriving businesses and
enviable lifestyles while preserving and
enhancing the natural environment of the area.
Visitors will see that this community is ideal.
The beach is nearby, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts
Plaza is just up the road, as is the intellectual
climate of California Lutheran University. The
whole Conejo Valley beckons hikers and
bicyclists wih its miles of mountain and canyon
trails. This exclusive community, centered on
Agoura Hills
The community’s name was chosen to honor
early settler Pierre Augoure in 1928, but through
misspelling or for ease of pronunciation, the
Postal Service changed it to Agoura, becoming
Agoura Hills with the city’s incorporation.
Located in the Santa Monica Mountain foothills
just 30 minutes from many urban centers, the
city sits among oak-covered canyons and rolling
hillsides and is just minutes from ocean beaches.
Visitors who like the great outdoors will enjoy this
“Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains
National Recreation Area with hiking and biking
trails in over 80 acres, in six parks, ranging from
small neighborhood parks to an equestrian
center. The Reyes Adobe Historical Site at the
base of Ladyface Mountain represents 150 years
of exciting California history through documented
stories and artifacts from the families that have
called the Reyes Adobe home since 1850.
center between Los Angeles and San Francisco
and is funded through a unique public/private
partnership between the City of Thousand Oaks
and the Alliance for the Arts. Shoppers will
appreciate The Oaks Mall and Janss
Marketplace both offering miles of shopping
experience. High-end retailers, world-class
dining and cinema experiences make these
malls a destination in and of themselves. For
those seeking out historical sights, visit the
Stagecoach Inn Museum Complex which
includes a pioneer home, a Spanish-Mexican
adobe and a Chumash Ap (tule dwelling) as well
as the Stagecoach Inn originally known as the
Grand Union Hotel when it was built in 1876.
Westlake Lake is often thought of as an ideal
spot to take a vacation. Don’t be surprised to
see electric boats motoring up and down the
main lake, as well as past the many well kept
backyard docks surrounding the island.
Children will enjoy feeding the various species
of ducks and geese that populate the lake area.
Anyone can take in the neighborhood splendor
from the marina board walk or lakeside dining
at the many restaurants at The Landing.
Thousand Oaks
The name, presumably for the area’s many oak
trees, first appears on a track map in 1923.
Today it is home to Amgen, Inc., the largest
biotechnology company in the world and
Ventura County’s largest private employer.
Annually, it is among the safest small cities in
America. The residents are serious about
preserving the ring of open space surrounding
the city, with local and city groups continuing to
buy more land to save it from development.
A visit to this area must include the Thousand
Oaks Civic Arts Plaza’s Countrywide Performing
Arts Center. This is the largest performing arts

COMMUNITY GUIDE - SIMI VALLEY
Simi Valley
The name comes from a Chumash Indian word,
shimiji, which refers to the thread-like clouds
that appear sometimes over the valley. Located
at the edge of eastern Ventura County encircled
by beautiful hills, Simi Valley is a haven away
from the congestion of the San Fernando Valley
and Los Angeles County and is consistently
rated one of the safest cities in the nation.
Visitors come by the “busloads” to the home of
the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and
Museum, which hosts the Air Force One
Pavillion. Corriganville Park is another mustsee, once known for being the backdrop of
many western movies and television shows.
The city is also host to the annual Cajun
Festival, a weekend-long event that showcases
New Orleans Jazz, blues, Cajun and Creole
music as well as authentic N’awlins cuisine from
jambalaya to fried alligator.
Preserving the tradition of the old west, one Simi
Valley neighborhood still provides bridlepaths for
horses instead of sidewalks.

What Makes a Good Gift? A Good Gift Experience!
Understanding and Predicting
Consumer Behavior- Why People
Buy Things They Don’t Need
(Dearborn Trade Publishing, July
2004), author Pam Danziger
reveals her findings and relates
them to gift giving for our readers.
Danziger: Having meticulously
profiled customers through surveys,
interviews, and focus groups, I
found that shopping today has
July-December 2010
influences the overall gift
experience and satisfaction of the
recipient with that gift.
Based on my findings, I advise
those choosing gifts to:
fundamentally changed. It is no
longer about the item to be
purchased, but the experience. I
have taken those findings and
projected them onto the importance
of gift choices and the experience
of receiving gifts and what makes
that the best experience it can be.
My findings point to the end of
cocooning, a trend which has
dominated our culture for the past
twenty years. Instead we are now in
an age of “connecting,”
characterized by the desire to find
ways to link up and forge
meaningful relationships. This new
trend will affect the stores people
shop in, the brands they select, and
the product categories they
purchase, and the gifts they prefer.
Moreover, it underscores the need
for gift givers to develop new gift
experiences that will enable them to
connect with recipients on an
emotional plane. The card, the
personal message, the timely
arrival, the wrapping, how it is
presented to the recipient, all
• Touch the emotions of their
recipients– “After hundreds of hours
spent talking to and interacting with
customers in a research setting, I
know that emotion is at the
foundation of people buying things
they don’t need and it stands to
reason, their enjoyment of gifts they
don’t necessarily need”.
• Entertain, entertain, entertain– “An
educated mind is an active mind,
and an active mind needs mental
stimulation. Marketers and retailers
need to plan to satisfy this need.” A
gift recipient who feels entertained
by the gift, the presentation, the
card, the wrapping, etc. receives an
emotional charge out of knowing
effort beyond the product selected
was made for them.
15
The key attribute that
distinguishes a good gift is
something that the recipient will like,
but also something that they are
unlikely to buy for themselves.
Because most gifters look for
something that is more emotional,
rather than practical, they turn first
to entertainment and recreation
goods, such as books, toys,
sporting goods, video/audio, DVD’s
and entertainment equipment,
photographic equipment,
computers, games, etc. Next is
clothing and fashion accessories,
such as handbags and wallets, or
jewelry and watches, purchased by
two-thirds of gift shoppers each.
PAMELA N. DANZIGER, an astute
market researcher for more than
twenty years, is president of Unity
Marketing, a marketing consulting
firm serving consumer product
businesses and author of Why
People Buy Things They Don’t
Need.

COMMUNITY GUIDE - OJAI
Ojai
Ojai has it all. When it comes to a day trip, a
weekend stay, a month’s vacation, or even the
ideal place to live, Ojai is blessed. An hour and a
half north of Los Angeles and within easy striking
distance of the ocean at Ventura and Santa
Barbara, Ojai is a gem. Scenically it’s beautiful.
Years ago, when Hollywood's Frank Capra filmed
Shangri-La for the movie Lost Horizons, he chose
Ojai. It’s a long East/West valley full of oaks,
orange and avocado groves surrounded by
mountains that seem to enfold it and give it its
small self contained community air. It’s Ojai, not
on the way to anywhere, not between anywhere,
just a haven of quiet peace and civility in a world
that's short of both.
There are bike trails, horse trails, hiking trails
through national forest, rocky scrub and
waterfalls, and everywhere, anywhere in the
valley, there are breathtaking views. There are
gourmet restaurants and fresh baked pastry
shops, its home to artists and potters and
craftsmen, and stores and studios that sell their
wares. There’s the Ojai Valley Inn with a golf
course to challenge the pros and there’s the
bucolic county run Soule Park course, where the
trick is to get in early. There are public tennis
courts of rare quality and there are tennis clubs
with gyms and pools. In short, OJAI HAS IT ALL.
Yet there is a quiet vibrancy that comes through
in its famous Tennis Tournament, The Ojai Music
Festival where the L.A. Philharmonic under world
renowned conductors play in a bowl setting that
is exquisite. It has its Shakespeare Festival, its
Film Festival, and the Indian Pow-Wow just down
the road at Lake Casitas. There is always
something going on, all pretty big events and yet,
in its own Ojai way, all no big deal.

COMMUNITY GUIDE - VENTURA
Ventura
The city’s official name of San Buenaventura
(Saint Bonaventure, an Italian theologian) was
shortened to Ventura, reportedly because the
full name did not fit on railroad timetables. It is
more generally assumed that the shorter name
was simply more convenient.
Visitors have many choices. Ventura is home of
the Ventura County Museum of History & Art,
site of the Ventura County Fair, San
Buenaventura State Beach, the Ventura Harbor,
Ventura Pier and Channel Islands National Park.
The historic Mission San Buenaventura is still
used for regular Catholic Church services and is
open to the public.

COMMUNITY GUIDE - CAMARILLO, OXNARD
Visitors will enjoy touring the 4.5 acre Camarillo
Ranch. Walk through the richly restored ranch
home and experience the grandeur of residing
in a 6,000 square-foot house. Old Town is
another attraction. You might not realize it if
you’re just whizzing by on Highway 101, but
Old Town is not just the older commercial strip
along Ventura Boulevard just south of the
freeway. This whole area is really the heart of
the old Camarillo “town site” that was first laid
out back in 1910.
opportunities. At Channel Islands Harbor and
along the shoreline, boating, kayaking,
sportfishing, surfing and biking are popular
past-times. In downtown, Heritage Square and
the Carnegie Art Museum are two "must see"
cultural attractions. Oxnard also offers two
popular stops on the Ventura County Wine Trail
at Herzog Wine Cellars and Rancho Ventavo
Cellars.
Oxnard
Camarillo
The city was named for Juan Camarillo who
purchased the almost 10,000 acre Rancho
Calleguas in 1875 from Jose Pedro Ruiz.
Geographically near Ventura County’s center,
Camarillo is one of the area’s fastest growing
cities with new housing projects bringing more
residents to town.
July-December 2010
Named for the Henry T. Oxnard family who
developed one of the city's first industries - a
sugar beet factory - the city of Oxnard is
surrounded by some of the richest agricultural
land in the world. Its farming heritage is
celebrated annually at the California Strawberry
Festival in May and the spicy Salsa Festival in
July. As the gateway to Channel Islands
National Park, just 11 miles offshore, Oxnard
offers an abundance of outdoor recreational

Travel Tips for the Area
Now you know, too!
1. Jacket/Sweatshirt – ALWAYS IN THE CAR:
Our area is famously blessed with typically
fantastic weather and mild temperatures. Many
visiting from other areas may easily be caught
off guard by the 20-30 degree temperature
swings that can occur from midday to after
sundown. Even at midday a fifteen minute drive
from a sunny Westlake Village over to a foggy
Malibu or Zuma Beach can leave you shivering
with a 20 degree temperature drop. January
through March expect highs from the mid 50s to
mid 60s most days and nights from the high 30s
to mid 40s (DOUBLE CHECK THIS)
Be prepared with layers – If you plan to be
out for the day and into the evening, or moving
about within Ventura and West L.A.Countys’
beautiful valleys, mountains or beaches, keep a
jacket along for the ride.
2. Travel Time Estimates – to LAX
Ventura Highway (The 101) …"in the
sunshine…" of popular music lore, and touting
beautiful scenery in places, can become a
parking lot along with our other highway routes
that crisscross Ventura County. The need for
patience or extra time is especially likely as one
nears LA and the 405 (if more than 1 passenger
the car pool lane helps once you hit the 405),
and anytime around commute periods. Tip -
July-December 2010
most shuttle and limo drivers jump off the 405 at
Howard Hughes Blvd., unmarked on the 405 as
an airport exit. After exiting here one can follow
well marked signs and save time compared to
the well marked Century Blvd. exit. From
Ventura 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 minutes, but it
can be much worse.
Alternate Path to LAX from Ventura County –
Canyon/Coast Route - If you pull info from an
online map search or just highlight your 101/405
path to LAX on your road atlas, you can throw
the travel estimates out the window at certain
times of the day or if there is an accident. LAX
bound limos carting celebrities usually wouldn’t
be driving next to you during those times. They
will cut across Las Virgines Canyon or Kanan to
get to a more predictable and scenic PCH
(Pacific Coast Highway aka Hwy. 1) when going
to LAX. Compared with no interstate traffic, this
can add 10 minutes to your travel time. But if
the 101 / 405 slow or stop, the scenic route can
save an hour or more and help you make your
flight. An accident on the coast can also wreak
havoc with arrival times.
3. What is "The Valley"? – Depending on who
you are speaking with and where you are
standing, this phrase can refer to a few areas in
Ventura County, including the Canejo Valley if
referring to an area in southern Ventura County,
but could also be Simi Valley or Ojai Valley. But
most often and in general it usually means the
San Fernando Valley starting south of Ventura
County. The San Fernando Valley is also home
of the descriptive "Valley Girl" label
TRAFFIC REPORTS UPDATES HELP DECIDE:
Best Bets - Tune into AM stations: KFI 640
(every 15 minutes), KNX 1070 (every 10
minutes), KFWB 980 (every 10 minutes)
