With over a 15 year background in publishing and creating hotel guest directories it is a natural fit to do a hotel guest magazine. We want to maintain a top quality publication that hotels can be proud to offer their guests. We sincerely hope you find this offering of maps, shopping and dining recommendations, travel tips and area information helpful during your stay. The advertisers promoted in the magazine make it all possible and welcome you to the area and their businesses. So please give them a try. Presenting Magazine is meant to serve as a useful overview of the most needed, or hopefully interesting, information for a short term visitor to the area. Consider this a good list of many of the best, but far from all of the things to do, places to dine and areas to shop. The area is far too rich in possibilities and our visitors too diverse in their interests to get it all between the covers of a single magazine. We want to continue to make Presenting Magazine the premier in-room hotel magazine. If you have any suggestions or ways we may improve, please let us know. Our contact information is listed on this page. We would also like you to help us welcome Rick and Jan O’Bryant to our staff. Rick is our Vice President of Sales for the Ventura County region. Located at the edge of eastern Ventura County encircled by beautiful hills, Simi Valley is a haven away from the congestion of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles County and is consistently rated one of the safest cities in the nation. Visitors come by the “busloads” to the home of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, which hosts the Air Force One Pavillion. Corriganville Park is another mustsee, once known for being the backdrop of many western movies and television shows. The city is also host to the annual Cajun Festival, a weekend-long event that showcases New Orleans Jazz, blues, Cajun and Creole music as well as authentic N’awlins cuisine from jambalaya to fried alligator. Preserving the tradition of the old west, one Simi Valley neighborhood still provides bridlepaths for horses instead of sidewalks. Understanding and Predicting Consumer Behavior- Why People Buy Things They Don’t Need (Dearborn Trade Publishing, July 2004), author Pam Danziger reveals her findings and relates them to gift giving for our readers. Danziger: Having meticulously profiled customers through surveys, interviews, and focus groups, I found that shopping today has July-December 2010 influences the overall gift experience and satisfaction of the recipient with that gift. Based on my findings, I advise those choosing gifts to: fundamentally changed. It is no longer about the item to be purchased, but the experience. I have taken those findings and projected them onto the importance of gift choices and the experience of receiving gifts and what makes that the best experience it can be. My findings point to the end of cocooning, a trend which has dominated our culture for the past twenty years. Instead we are now in an age of “connecting,” characterized by the desire to find ways to link up and forge meaningful relationships. This new trend will affect the stores people shop in, the brands they select, and the product categories they purchase, and the gifts they prefer. Moreover, it underscores the need for gift givers to develop new gift experiences that will enable them to connect with recipients on an emotional plane. The card, the personal message, the timely arrival, the wrapping, how it is presented to the recipient, all • Touch the emotions of their recipients– “After hundreds of hours spent talking to and interacting with customers in a research setting, I know that emotion is at the foundation of people buying things they don’t need and it stands to reason, their enjoyment of gifts they don’t necessarily need”. • Entertain, entertain, entertain– “An educated mind is an active mind, and an active mind needs mental stimulation. Marketers and retailers need to plan to satisfy this need.” A gift recipient who feels entertained by the gift, the presentation, the card, the wrapping, etc. receives an emotional charge out of knowing effort beyond the product selected was made for them. 15 The key attribute that distinguishes a good gift is something that the recipient will like, but also something that they are unlikely to buy for themselves. Because most gifters look for something that is more emotional, rather than practical, they turn first to entertainment and recreation goods, such as books, toys, sporting goods, video/audio, DVD’s and entertainment equipment, photographic equipment, computers, games, etc. Next is clothing and fashion accessories, such as handbags and wallets, or jewelry and watches, purchased by two-thirds of gift shoppers each. PAMELA N. DANZIGER, an astute market researcher for more than twenty years, is president of Unity Marketing, a marketing consulting firm serving consumer product businesses and author of Why People Buy Things They Don’t Need. Presenting Magazine Presenting Magazine 16 July-December 2010 COMMUNITY GUIDE - OJAI Ojai Ojai has it all. When it comes to a day trip, a weekend stay, a month’s vacation, or even the ideal place to live, Ojai is blessed. An hour and a half north of Los Angeles and within easy striking distance of the ocean at Ventura and Santa Barbara, Ojai is a gem. Scenically it’s beautiful. Years ago, when Hollywood's Frank Capra filmed Shangri-La for the movie Lost Horizons, he chose Ojai. It’s a long East/West valley full of oaks, orange and avocado groves surrounded by mountains that seem to enfold it and give it its small self contained community air. It’s Ojai, not on the way to anywhere, not between anywhere, just a haven of quiet peace and civility in a world that's short of both. There are bike trails, horse trails, hiking trails through national forest, rocky scrub and waterfalls, and everywhere, anywhere in the valley, there are breathtaking views. There are gourmet restaurants and fresh baked pastry shops, its home to artists and potters and craftsmen, and stores and studios that sell their wares. There’s the Ojai Valley Inn with a golf course to challenge the pros and there’s the bucolic county run Soule Park course, where the trick is to get in early. There are public tennis courts of rare quality and there are tennis clubs with gyms and pools. In short, OJAI HAS IT ALL. Yet there is a quiet vibrancy that comes through in its famous Tennis Tournament, The Ojai Music Festival where the L.A. Philharmonic under world renowned conductors play in a bowl setting that is exquisite. It has its Shakespeare Festival, its Film Festival, and the Indian Pow-Wow just down the road at Lake Casitas. There is always something going on, all pretty big events and yet, in its own Ojai way, all no big deal. July-December 2010 17 Presenting Magazine Presenting Magazine 18 July-December 2010 COMMUNITY GUIDE - VENTURA Ventura The city’s official name of San Buenaventura (Saint Bonaventure, an Italian theologian) was shortened to Ventura, reportedly because the full name did not fit on railroad timetables. Ventura is home of the Ventura County Museum of History & Art, site of the Ventura County Fair, San Buenaventura State Beach, the Ventura Harbor, Ventura Pier and Channel Islands National Park. Jacket/Sweatshirt – ALWAYS IN THE CAR: Our area is famously blessed with typically fantastic weather and mild temperatures. Many visiting from other areas may easily be caught off guard by the 20-30 degree temperature swings that can occur from midday to after sundown. Even at midday a fifteen minute drive from a sunny Westlake Village over to a foggy Malibu or Zuma Beach can leave you shivering with a 20 degree temperature drop. January through March expect highs from the mid 50s to mid 60s most days and nights from the high 30s to mid 40s (DOUBLE CHECK THIS) Be prepared with layers – If you plan to be out for the day and into the evening, or moving about within Ventura and West L.A.Countys’ beautiful valleys, mountains or beaches, keep a jacket along for the ride. 2. Travel Time Estimates – to LAX Ventura Highway (The 101) …"in the sunshine…" of popular music lore, and touting beautiful scenery in places, can become a parking lot along with our other highway routes that crisscross Ventura County. The need for patience or extra time is especially likely as one nears LA and the 405 (if more than 1 passenger the car pool lane helps once you hit the 405), and anytime around commute periods. Tip - July-December 2010 most shuttle and limo drivers jump off the 405 at Howard Hughes Blvd., unmarked on the 405 as an airport exit. After exiting here one can follow well marked signs and save time compared to the well marked Century Blvd. exit. From Ventura 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 minutes, but it can be much worse. Alternate Path to LAX from Ventura County – Canyon/Coast Route - If you pull info from an online map search or just highlight your 101/405 path to LAX on your road atlas, you can throw the travel estimates out the window at certain times of the day or if there is an accident. LAX bound limos carting celebrities usually wouldn’t be driving next to you during those times. They will cut across Las Virgines Canyon or Kanan to get to a more predictable and scenic PCH (Pacific Coast Highway aka Hwy. 1) when going to LAX. Compared with no interstate traffic, this can add 10 minutes to your travel time. But if the 101 / 405 slow or stop, the scenic route can save an hour or more and help you make your flight. An accident on the coast can also wreak havoc with arrival times. 3. What is "The Valley"? – Depending on who you are speaking with and where you are standing, this phrase can refer to a few areas in Ventura County, including the Canejo Valley if referring to an area in southern Ventura County, but could also be Simi Valley or Ojai Valley. But most often and in general it usually means the San Fernando Valley starting south of Ventura County. The San Fernando Valley is also home of the descriptive "Valley Girl" label TRAFFIC REPORTS UPDATES HELP DECIDE: Best Bets - Tune into AM stations: KFI 640 (every 15 minutes), KNX 1070 (every 10 minutes), KFWB 980 (every 10 minutes) 35 Presenting Magazine
