WORLD ELDER ABUSE
AWARENESS DAY
15 June 2015
By wearing something purple on the 15th, you can help
to raise awareness for this very important issue and
demonstrate that we are united in the belief that elder
abuse cannot be tolerated.
What is elder abuse?
Elder Abuse refers to the violence, mistreatment or
neglect that older adults living in either private
residences or institutions may experience at the hands of
their spouses, children, other family members,
caregivers, service providers or other individuals in
situations of power or trust. Elder Abuse also includes
older adults abused by non-family members who are not
in a position of power or trust and self-neglect.
Financial abuse is the most prevalent type of abuse
affecting 60,000 Canadian seniors.
Signs of abuse may include:
 A sudden change in behaviour or appearance
 A sudden onset of physical injuries, and
 A change in financial resources

Summer Fruit and Mixed
Greens Salad
A Canadian Living Recipe
(www.canadianliving.ca)
"This salad evolved over a period of time," says Marilyn, who
kept changing ingredients until she was satisfied. "Originally
the salad featured sweet red peppers, which I didn't enjoy, but I
wanted to keep the red color. That's where the strawberries
came in." Toss your favorite greens — Boston, romaine, curly
endive — in this spectacular fresh-tasting salad. It's beautiful on
a summer brunch table.
Ingredients


Creative Ways to Take Caregiving Breaks
www.saintelizabeth.com
Remembering to pause and take care of ourselves can be one of the biggest challenges we face when
we're consumed with looking after someone else's needs. Add to this caring for young children or a
demanding job (or both) and you may be too exhausted to even think of the possibility of a break!
Caregiving involves defining, and re-defining, the “new normal.” You may not see opportunities to
take a regular class or go the spa like you used to. However, if you think creatively, mini-breaks to
look after your own needs are not only possible, they’re necessary. Consider how you can work in
small doses of self-care to relieve stress, instead of skipping them altogether.
Sweatergang Companions provides respite visits for caregivers, so there is always an opportunity to
get out of the house and take a break from the demands of being a caregiver. We are just a phone call
away!
Some inspiration, if you have:
5 mins - Do some stretching
- Meditate in a quiet room
- Turn on some music and dance
15-30 mins
-Walk around the block
- Call a friend
- Browse the web
10 mins - Make a cup of tea
- Take a power nap
- Write in a journal
60 mins
- Take a bath
- Go to the park
- Meet a friend for coffee
If you need a break, Sweatergang Companions is here for you. One day out a week may be
all you need to feel rejuvenated and ready for whatever the week ahead may throw at you!
