Just six years ago, Chelimo arrived in the United States from his native Kenya to pursue an education and his love of running. Now, fresh off qualifying for Team USA at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 25-year-old Soldier is poised to defend his top-finisher title at the 2016 Army Ten-Miler (ATM). After earning his bachelor’s degree in public health in 2014, Chelimo followed in the footsteps of fellow UNCG student and Kenyan runner Paul Katam, joining the Army and becoming a U.S. citizen through the Military Accessions Vital to the SPC Chelimo’s life course seems to have destined him for greatness. He was National Interest (MAVNI) program. Trained born in Iten, Kenya—a small town renowned for churning as a water treatment out and training middle- and long-distance runners. During specialist and presently his freshman year on an athletic scholarship at Shorter stationed at Fort Carson, University in Rome, Georgia, he was named the Southern Colorado, Chelimo The following Soldiers States Athletic Conference Cross Country Runner of the entered the Army’s are members of the 2016 Year. SGT Augustus Maiyo Proud sponsor of the 2016 Army Ten-Miler Chelimo himself enjoys serving as an ambassador for the Army. “I go to schools and talk about the Army and Africa,” he said. “Young kids want to know everything about the Army, so I teach them how it’s about more than just warfighting; it’s about doing your job and learning to excel at sports like running.” This year, WCAP qualified five Track & Field athletes for the Rio Olympic Games. Chelimo and fellow Army runners SPC Shadrack Kipchirchir, SPC Leonard Korir and SGT Hillary Bor all qualified for Team USA at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon in July. Chelimo qualified in the Men’s 5,000-meters—his specialty. As a Soldier, Chelimo feels particular pride in representing Team USA. Follow us on Twitter @pwc_usgov © 2016 PwC. All rights reserved. In this document, “PwC” refers to PricewaterhouseCoopers Public Sector LLP, a Delaware limited liability partnership, which is a member firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited, each member firm of which is a separate legal entity. 14 “It’s really a great feeling to represent the Soldiers who work hard every day and the ones who have lost their lives,” he said. “It’s a great way to represent them.” Training for the ATM is a lot different from training for a 3,000-meters or 5,000-meters, however. Early this year, Chelimo concentrated on shorter races such as the Portland 3K to prepare for the USA Track and Field (USATF) Indoor Championships, and the subsequent International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Indoor Championships in March. For the Olympic competition, Chelimo focused on further building his speed by engaging in speedwork. After returning from Rio, he will start with longer-distance runs to build endurance for the ATM. “It’s going to come down to endurance and speed,” said Chelimo. “I have speed; I just need to work on my endurance.” “This year, we’ll have a really strong All-Army Team because we’re all in top shape,” said Chelimo. “It’s going to be a great ATM this year.” Already, halfway through his four-year Army contract, Chelimo says he anticipates reenlisting in 2018 because he enjoys serving his country and performing his job. Having the opportunity to run for the Army, he adds, “is the icing on the cake.” As luck would have it, his three fellow Olympic-qualifying runners from the Army plan to train with him for the ATM as part of their common participation in the All-Army Team. The teammates enjoy a friendly rivalry with each other. Last year, Chelimo narrowly edged out Army SPC Nicholas Kipruto and SPC Kipchirchir to take first place in the 2015 ATM—a significant improvement over Chelimo’s previous 32nd place finish. The All-Army Team as a whole performed admirably in 2015, breaking the team’s race record and winning the prestigious International Cup. Members of the All-Army Team keep pace at the 2015 Army Ten-Miler. 15 WOUNDED WARRIOR TO STAGE DRAMATIC COMEBACK AT 32ND ARMY TEN-MILER For 44-year-old Norberto “Norbie” Lara of Visalia, California, participating in the 32nd Army Ten-Miler (ATM) is not just the fulfillment of a dream; it’s nothing short of a miracle. Twelve years ago, Lara woke from a two-month coma to find himself at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The Squad Leader had been on a combat patrol in Baqubah, Iraq when his vehicle was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. In addition to losing an arm, Lara suffered a brain injury, a lacerated liver and lung damage requiring a tracheotomy. As he began his two-year recovery at Walter Reed, Lara had to relearn how to talk and was dependent on oxygen. It took a long time for him to simply stand again, to adjust to his amputation and eventually to breathe on his own. Mentally, his recovery was just as tough. Lara initially lay in bed wondering if he’d ever be able to do anything again. He had joined the Army at age 22, wanting to serve his country as his older brother had, and eventually become a cop. His service as a military police officer took him to Bosnia and Kuwait on previous deployments, but Iraq was his first experience in a combat zone. He had enjoyed running in his personal time, finding it a good way to challenge himself and experience “the runner’s high.” It was these memories – and an article he read about the ATM while recuperating at Walter Reed – that helped him adjust his perspective and strengthened his resolve to run again. “It’s important to set small goals toward a larger goal,” says Lara about overcoming adversity. “When you feel like everything has been taken from you, you need to overcome mental blocks. Don’t listen to those who say ‘you can’t do something.’” In January 2015, Lara achieved a milestone in his physical recovery with the removal of a bone growth that had caused chronic pain. After his introduction to Operation Enduring Warrior, he began walking a lot more, he hit the gym again and eventually embarked on longer runs. He took part in a five-mile Spartan Sprint in September 2015, the Bataan Memorial Death March earlier this year, and recently completed the Spartan Agoge, which is one of the most grueling challenges Spartan offers. The next logical step for Lara was to begin training for the 2016 ATM. “When you feel like everything has been taken from you, you need to overcome mental blocks. Don’t listen to those who say ‘you can’t do something.’” – NORBERTO “NORBIE” LARA “Until this last year, I never thought it would be possible to run long distances again due to my lung damage,” says Lara. “This year, I intend not only to attempt the ATM, but to finish the race.” Brimming with confidence, it’s an objective he fully expects to achieve. “Once a Soldier, always a Soldier,” he says. UNITED CDW•G IS PROUD TO SUPPORT THE 2016 ARMY TEN-MILER 800.808.4239 | CDWG.com 16 FAMILY LEGACY: DAUGHTER HONORS LATE FATHER BY FOLLOWING IN FOOTSTEPS AT ARMY TEN-MILER Many who run in the Army Ten-Miler dedicate their participation to a friend, colleague, fellow Soldier or relative. In most cases, it’s a matter of an individual who is already a committed runner devoting his or her efforts to one who has shaped or heavily influenced their lives. In the case of 30-year-old Richmond, Virginia resident Bethany Anderson, her inspiration was the reason she took up running in the first place. Two months might not be an ideal time-frame for which to prepare for one’s first Ten-Miler, but that October, proudly wearing “Team Ralph” t-shirts, mother and daughter crossed the finish line. Anderson has gradually worked her way up to running six times a week, and now covers 30-35 miles a week. Back in 1994, Anderson’s father, SGM Ralph Wilcher, was transferred from Germany to the former Total Army Personnel Command (PERSCOM) headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia. Settling his family in Stafford, Virginia, SGM Wilcher endured the long, frustrating daily commute familiar to so many in the Washington, D.C. area. Always a runner, SGM Wilcher would head to Alexandria and run prior to the start of his work day, often logging as many as seven miles a day. So it was natural that he would enthusiastically sign up for the 1995 Army Ten-Miler, a practice he maintained annually through 2012. Anderson, meanwhile, living a typical childhood filled with friends, school and ballet, was always one of Ralph’s biggest supporters, crafting signs and positioning herself along the route with family, first to cheer her dad, and then her mom Kathrine as well. Kathrine Wilcher began running the ATM with her husband in 1997 and has continued since his death from cancer in 2013. Not surprisingly, 2013 and 2014 were emotional races for the entire Wilcher clan, and especially difficult for Kathrine after so many years of running with her husband. Never a consistent runner herself, Anderson determined after the 2014 ATM that she would no longer allow her mother to run alone, so she turned to her late father for inspiration. She gave birth to her first child in early 2015 and in August of that year began training, which provided both therapy for her grief and the added benefit of enhanced strength and confidence. Proud to call herself an “Army Brat,” Anderson began running one or two miles at a time, slowly building up her distance and knowledge of running, operating off of her best logic and luck. Initially, she ran every other day, after work, accompanied to the track by her husband, who would push their baby in the stroller as she ran alongside. Bethany Anderson will compete in her second Army Ten-Miler in honor of her late father, SGM Ralph Wilcher, who ran the ATM 18 times. “Now I run every day, and my dad is the reason for that,” said Anderson. “As it was for my dad, running is now a part of my lifestyle and identity. I have become a happier and healthier person in the process.” Anderson and her mother Kathrine vow to run every Army Ten-Miler together for as long as they are both physically able, running to honor SGM Ralph Wilcher, Soldier, husband and father. “When I run the ATM, I feel like my dad is with me. It is one of the most special days of the year for me.” Emblazoned on the back of her shirt? “I Run For My Dad,” undoubtedly earning a smile from many an Army child. 17 HAPPY COUPLE PLANS FIRST ATM RACE TOGETHER IN 2016 AFTER POST-RACE PROPOSAL LAST YEAR Scott Mindel, an Acoustical Engineer for Applied Physical Sciences/ Electric Boat (MA) had a little extra incentive to reach the finish line as quickly as possible at last year’s Army Ten-Miler (ATM) in Washington D.C. Notwithstanding his role as a key runner on his General Dynamics (GD) ATM race team, Mindel had plans to ask his girlfriend, Sasha Varanka, an occupational therapist, to marry him immediately after the race. Mindel’s teammates, who had flown in from as far away as San Diego, Spain, and Switzerland, were surely counting on him. GD Chairman and CEO Phebe Novakovic turned out to cheer the first-time GD teams to victory in the corporate division. Mindel’s family made the journey, well aware of his post-race plans. Even his girlfriend’s family was in attendance because her sister was also an ATM competitor. Clearly … no pressure. Participating in his first ATM, Mindel finished 11th overall among the 26,310 runners, while the GD teams took second and third place, respectively, among the 64-team field. While certainly happy with his run, his post-race proposal strategy proved nearly as challenging. “I was doing my cool down towards the Navy Merchant Marine Memorial, a perfect spot decorated with flowers overlooking the memorials across the Potomac,” Mindel said. “Sasha was running with me, en route to retrieve her sister’s extra clothes at the hotel. I tried to get her to stop at the Memorial by telling her I had something in my shoe, but she kept running saying I could catch up to her. After trying again, I pulled the ring out of my shorts pocket and got down on one knee, all probably in one fluid motion. She was very surprised, put it on, and didn’t say anything until I asked her if she was going to say anything. “She hugged me and responded, ‘Of course!’” The couple was married last August and will run their first ATM together this weekend.
