Grit and tradition set pace for Buckin’ Elks

The Buckin’ Elks were a
streaky team last year who finished the season on a losing end.
Rest assured they’ll be looking to
change those results in 2015.
When the team was on, they
really were on. In their six wins
of the season, their margin of
victory was +140, and included
back-to-back shutouts against
Starmount (26-0) and North
Wilkes (42-0). There were a lot of
positives to take out of last year,
and in the first days of practice,
Head Coach Scott Wood was feeling optimistic as the season was
approaching.
“There’s excitement in the air,
the kids are excited to get back
on the field and get some work
done,” Head Coach Wood said.
Tradition is deep at Elkin High
Elkin senior Clint Henderson, No. 7
School, and they’d like to get
back to their brief dynasty in the
early 2000s, where they won four
state championships in 2002-03,
and again in 2005-06. However,
their tradition doesn’t start in
the 2000s; it goes way back to
the standard that Coach Richard
Grissom set when he coached the
team from 1974-2010. They don’t
pick senior captains until the end
of the year, and it sends a unique
message to the team every year.
“It sets the tone for the season,” Wood said. “[Grissom]
wants the seniors to be leaders
and not single out anyone but let
them make their own leadership
roles.”
“Everybody’s important, it’s not
just one person controlling the
whole thing,” senior Will Altemueller said. “Everybody has to do
their part including underclassmen as well as seniors. They’re
just as important.”
Elkin lost many seniors last
year, leaving some gaps to fill in
many positions. The low number
of seniors this year has some players aware of the challenge ahead.
“We’re not going to be the biggest, we’re not going to be the
fastest, we’re not going to be the
strongest,” senior Clint Hender-
Elkin senior Will Altemueller, No. 44
son said. “But we can outwork
everybody and that’s what we’ve
got to do.”
They’re opening the season
at home against Forbush High
School, and Wood said he’s looking forward to facing a familiar
foe.
“Coach [Chris Johnson] and
I have both been coaching for a
long time, and we look for a good
game out of them,” Wood said.
The Buckin’ Elks will have six
home games this year compared
to last, and will get to open the
season with three straight. Following Forbush, Elkin plays
North Surry and Mount Airy
before traveling to Surry Central
for its first away game of the
season.
Coming off an off-weekend,
the Elks travel to Starmount for
one of their biggest games of the
season on Sept. 25. They return
home for two straight against
North Wilkes and East Wilkes
before traveling to West Wilkes
then Wilkes Central. Their last
home game is Oct. 30 against
Alleghany before closing out the
regular season at Ashe County on
Nov. 6.

Starmount Rams are looking for redemption

BOONVILLE — The stars were
out in Boonville last year as the
Starmount Rams put themselves
in position to win the 1AA Championship game. Wallace-Rose Hill
ran over the Rams defense, and left
the Starmount team looking for
redemption.
Last season doesn’t mean anything now, and Head Coach Scott
Johnson sent the message to his
guys early on in practice.
“Last year is last year. It’s not like
the pros,” Johnson said. “You get
a taste of [the championship] and
they want to get back there. That’s
our goal every year, our kids know
what they’re going to have to do.”
There’s a small senior class this
season at Starmount, including
senior Brandon Prescott, who made
a big catch in the loss in the championship game last season. Last
year’s loss still stings for Prescott,
but also drives him.
“It still isn’t gone yet,” Prescott
said. “We have to use this year to
motivate us. Everybody doubted us
that year, and we overcame adversity.”
Prescott’s versatility will serve
the team well if he can continue
where he left off.
“He really came on at the end
of last year. He became more and
more involved in our offense and
was a big playmaker,” Johnson said.
Their style of football is clearly
old-fashioned, but it works for
them. Not once in the entire season
did they pass for more than 100
yards in a game, but their running
game was relentless. They set out
weekly goals throughout the year,
including getting 250 rushing yards
a game. They were able to be good
on that goal in almost every game
last season, and it’s a testament
to the strong offensive line, and

Sawyer Davis, Ken Kelly and Trey

Prescott is going to have to come up big as
a leader if they want to make a repeat run
to the championship game.
Bryant combining for 52 rushing
TDs. Those seniors are gone, but it
looks like Prescott and Trey Lomax
proved themselves worthy to fill
the spot. Lomax and Prescott combined for 13 TDs last season.
Their first three weeks are on
the road. The road trip kicks off
in Mount Airy Aug. 21 in a nonconference matchup, and continues
with a trip to East Surry the following weekend. After an off weekend,
they travel to Forbush for what
promises to be a season-defining
matchup for both teams. Coach
Johnson isn’t concerned about
starting off on the road, and noted
that three out of the last four games
of the season are at home against
conference teams.
“It doesn’t concern me. Our kids
will compete wherever they play,”
Johnson said.
As far as the Battle of the Bridge
goes, they will host their biggest
rival, Elkin, on Sept. 25. Their
regular season concludes at home
on Nov. 6 against Alleghany, and if
their season goes anything like last
year, they’ll be a favorite to win it
all.

EAST BEND — Forbush Head Coach
Chris Johnson said his team has some
talent, but a lot of question marks after
losing several key players.
A year ago, Forbush was 4-3 after a
conference win over South Stokes. However, four straight losses dropped the
Falcons to 4-7.
Three of the four games were close,
but the team couldn’t pull out a win.
West Stokes won by three, Surry Central
by seven and North Surry by 10.
The Falcons brought home two Western Piedmont awards at the end of the
season. The top offensive player award
went to receiver Brady Willard, and specialist of the year went to quarterback
Carson Fulp for his punting prowess.
Fulp had 1,269 yards and 12 TDs passing, and Willard made up 771 yards and
10 of those TDs.
Like a lot of schools, Forbush is struggling with numbers, said Johnson. There
is a strong correlation between the num-
ber of guys that come out and a team’s
chances of success.
The players he does have, the coach
said, are talented and can make things
happen.
Taking Fulp’s spot under center is
Jackson Cooper. Johnson said Cooper is
a fantastic runner and will do a wonderful job, but he played split end last year,
so he doesn’t have QB experience.
Reece Warfel, Zane Johnson, Cameron
Engebretson and Omar Montalvan will
split carries at running back. Reece was
a backup last year. Zane is a transfer,
Cameron didn’t play last season and
Omar is stepping up from JV, so that’s
three new faces this year.
“We will be as good as those guys are,”
Johnson said of his QB and backs. “If
they have a phenomenal year, then we
can be successful.”
Making their jobs easier will be the
return of two big linemen.
Luke Alderman was an all-conference
selection on both sides of the ball. He
stands 6-foot-2 and 270 pounds. Dex
Bray is 6-foot-2 and 255.
Those two players are as strong as
anybody around, said Johnson. Not only
are they big, they have good feet.
On the outside, Johnson is high on
Carlos Soto as a receiver. Chase Martin
also will see time at receiver. Cory Bevins looks ready for tight end.
Returning at kicker is senior Josue
Aguilar. He was 20-24 on extra points
last season and 5-6 on field goals.
“On defense, it’s pretty much the same
names in different spots,” said the coach.
He has as many as seven athletes who
will play both ways.
Alderman, Bray, Aguilar and Zane
Johnson make up the front of the 4-4 set.
Three of the four linebackers look
set with Warfel, Bevins and Montalvan
ready to go.
In the secondary Chase Martin and
Soto will fill two of the three spots, but
the third is still up for grabs.
There are some football newcomers
who might play some big roles, he said.
Hunter Chapman was the leading scorer on the basketball team as a junior, and
Jake Widner played along with him.

Hunter was “electrifying” on the
basketball court, so he could make an
impact, the coach said.
On the JV team last year, Shane Hutchens was a go-to guy as both a receiver
and defensive back, so he should figure
into the mix.

Mount Airy High School 2015 Varsity Granite Bears
Big shoes to fill at skill positions for Bears

MOUNT AIRY — The Mount Airy
football team comes into this year with a
large hole in the offense.
The Granite Bears’ will need to replace
their leading passer, receiver and top
three rushers from last season.
Senior track star Cordell France has
the most experience, but that’s only 24
carries for all of 2014. And, he starts off
the season recovering from injury.
However, one way to mask this inexperience is in the strength up front, and
Mount Airy returns one of the most
experienced and formidable offensive
lines in the region. Coach Holder hopes
that his offensive line can make this transition to a new backfield easier for the
Granite Bears.
“We’re going to have to manufacture
some points early on,” Holder said. “But
our offensive line is going to be better
than we were last year, and we are so
much further along at this point now
than we were last year.”
One reason for that is the year of experience the King brothers had last season.
Ezekiel is a senior who will be flanked
by Gabriel, a junior who was a NCPreps.

night’s, but for their presence in the locker room and on the practice field as well.
“They know how to motivate one
another, and they know how to motivate
their teammates,” Holder said. “They’re
our emotion on the team, and they do a
tremendous job in the leadership department.”
Cody Clawson will also be penciled in
as a starter on the offensive line, but the
other two spots were still up for grabs
as the team prepared for its exhibition
games.
Whoever joins the offensive line will
be protecting either Ian Holder or Jackson Smith at the quarterback position.
Holder and Smith are in the midst of
a battle for the starting spot, and their
coach hopes to avoid a dual-quarterback
situation.
If Smith doesn’t earn the nod at quarterback, coach Holder plans to use him
as a fullback, linebacker or tight end this
season.
The fullback in Mount Airy’s offense is
a vital cog. Last year, powerful Andrew
Jones had 15 TDs and was second on the
team in catches to Caleb Horton. Playaction passes to the fullback are a staple
of the Bears’ attack.
There’s another heated battle taking
place right behind that fullback. Sean
Evans and Orion Ramey, two players
from last year’s JV team, are fighting to
be the main guy at running back.

Cardinals seniors changing things up at East Wilkes

RONDA — The East Wilkes High
School football program looks like
it’s on the verge of change; a change
that could make it a significant threat
in the Mountain Valley Athletic
Conference. A total of 18 seniors are
expected to help lead the team, and
change its culture.
“There’s been nights over the past
couple of years where, quite frankly,
we should have won ballgames and
didn’t,” Head Coach J.K. Adkins said.
“I told [this group] when they came
in as freshmen that they would be
the group to change this place. Their
challenge is to be remembered as the
class that changed how people view
our program, and it’s visible now.”
Offensively, their simplicity seems
promising to put points on the
board. They’re not going to trick the

competition with a flea flicker or a
Statue of Liberty, but what they are
going to do is take what they can get,
yard for yard.
“We hope to be better in the passing
game than we have in the last few
years. We’ve got better targets out
on the edge, and better capability of
getting it out to them.”
On the offensive line, they’ve got
plenty of seniors returning, and they
look strong. Last year’s All-Conference
player Justin Combs is back at left
guard and he looks like a different
player.
“He’s slimmed up, and his mobility
is a lot better, but by doing so, he’s
gained some added strength, so I
think he’s going to be better this
year.”
While cliché that the best offense
is a strong defense, it’s something
that the Cardinals will be looking at
heavily if they’re to have a potential

championship run. On the defensive
line, they’ve got two big senior leaders
who have to continue to step up.
“Our two biggest senior leaders are
Quincy Lineberger and Chris Dixon,”
defensive line coach Travis Walker
said. “The guys rally to those two and
listen to everything they have to say,
and they’re pretty much the anchor of
the team.”
While the senior core looks strong
this season, underclassmen also have
high expectations.
“Out there on the edge, we’ve got a
sophomore named Jared Wood who I
think could be a future college football
player,” Adkins said. “He’s got great
speed and runs great routes, has good
hands so he’s definitely going to be a
weapon out there.”
The Cardinals are fortunate to start
their season at home Aug. 21 against
South Stokes before traveling to Surry
Central the next weekend. They enter
the off weekend for Labor Day, then
return home against North Stokes on
Sept. 11 for a two-game home stand
with Forbush the following weekend.
Then for the remainder of the season,
the Cardinals flip flop each week
from away against North Wilkes,
Alleghany, Elkin, Ashe County,
Starmount, Wilkes Central, then
finishing the season against West
Wilkes.

Eagles look to keep momentum from 2014

DOBSON — Surry Central comes
into the season on a high note after
going 7-5 last year.
After going 9-13 the past two
seasons, the Golden Eagles put
together their best year since 7-4 in
2011 with Wes Brown at running back.
Like many teams this offseason,
however, the Eagles lost both their
quarterback (Kirk Needham) and
running back (Alex Martin).
The interesting thing about that
team is that it had few juniors behind
the seniors, noted Head Coach Monty
Southern.
Central finished the season with only
four juniors on the roster. Behind that,
however, were six sophomores and a
freshman.
Those seven youngsters, he said,
“They weren’t just standing there, they
got reps.”
Still, Southern was a little concerned
about having only four seniors. And
not just from the point of experience,
but maturity and leadership.
Luckily there were some guys who
had played football before that came
back, and there were a couple who
never played before who showed up for
workouts.
He said that boosted the total to
10 seniors. Then the team boasts the
biggest junior class that Southern has
ever had.
One of those juniors is the anchor of
the offensive line, Kaleb Dunn.
Dunn had good size as a freshman
and was moved up to varsity. After two
years, he’s the most experienced player
on the roster.
He has taken charge of the line and
is doing a good job of leading, said the
coach.
Dunn won 34 matches and qualified
for the state tournament last year as
a 195-pound wrestler. Working with
wrestling coach Stephen Priddy keeps
making Dunn better as a football
player, too, said Southern.
Flanking Dunn will be senior Tyler
Samson. Both are about 205-210
pounds.
Three other spots on the offensive
line are up for competition. The
candidates are Cole Parker, Jackson
Gates, Chase Mosley, Josh Holyfield,
Tanner Blevins and Noah Hutchens.
Under center will be junior Chandler
Johnson, who backed up Needham last
year. He also played starting guard on
the basketball team, which helped his
leadership potential.
Chandler played a few snaps in every
single game to spell Kirk, so he got
some experience, said Southern. He
did a good job with the run game; he
wasn’t asked to throw the
ball because he didn’t get
the reps in practice to
build timing with his
receivers.
Skillwise,
Central has two
returning seniors
in Tyler Daniels
and Nathan
Prewitt.
Tyler has
pretty good
speed and will
play what Southern
calls the A back position.
Nathan was a transfer last
year who didn’t know the offense
well enough last season, but played
some at tight end. This year he’ll back
up Johnson at QB and maybe see time
at other spots.
Two other juniors will figure into
the backfield. Noah Wilmoth and Riley
Dockery are similar in height and build
at about 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, said
Southern. Both run pretty well and will
get touches.
Eric Ramirez was a starter on JV last
season and got a lot of touches. He will
play the B back spot.
The Eagles don’t throw the ball a
lot, but they will need to find ways to
get the ball to the fastest player on the
team.
Martin Palacios started at receiver
and cornerback as a freshman. Back in
the spring, he broke the team record
for the fastest time in the 40-yard dash,
noted the coach.
He is only about five and a half feet
tall, but the coach is glad to have him
on both sides of the ball.
The other receiving threat is Jed
Kidd, 6-foot-1 with average speed, but
with a knack for coming down with the
ball.
Jed only caught about eight passes
last year, but all but one of them was
for 20 yards or more, said Southern.
He caught the game-winning TD
against Elkin and beat North Surry
deep for another.
One of the firstyear seniors is Gabe
Wilmoth, the catcher
from the baseball
team. He has good
hands and is
catching up as
far as football IQ
goes.
On the
defensive line,
the Eagles have
one all-conference
returnee in David
Pena. However,
Pena had a lower-leg
injury that required
surgery in the offseason.
He is still rounding back into
shape, said the coach.
At 265, the heavyweight wrestler is
the biggest player on the team.
Another wrestler could start
alongside him on the defensive line.
Chase Boone finished third in
the Western Piedmont wrestling
tournament and also placed fifth in
the West regional in pole vault for the
track team.
Last year, Andrew Hegler was
the little guy diving into gaps in the
offensive line. While Chase isn’t that
big, he still has 40 pounds on Andrew
at 180, Southern said.
The other spot on the line could be
manned by Dunn, but the coach would
rather save the lineman for offense.
He hopes to see other guys play
themselves into the starting lineup.
The rest of the defense will take on
a decided new look after three years of
Stephen Bruner and Alex Martin and
two years with Zack Martin and Kirk
Needham.
It’s a little scary without those four
young men as a security blanket, the
coach admitted.
At linebacker, Chase Mosley will
hold down one spot. Chandler Johnson
and Ramirez will platoon at another —
keeping their reps down since both will
see a lot of time on offense.
Prewitt will be on the outside edge
where he played quite a bit last season.
Riley Dockery was an OLB last year,
but will move back to safety this year.
Dylan Mitchell and Hobie Arnder
are two juniors who could be in the
mix. Hobie (6 foot, 180) has gotten a
lot bigger and stronger than a year ago
and could compete for a starting spot.
“Defensive back is where we feel our
best,” Southern said of the defense.
Palacios and Daniels started last year
and did well.
Noah Wilmoth spelled both Alex
Martin and Needham last year and got
almost as many defensive snaps as they
did.
With Dockery sliding back to safety,
too, the backfield looks solid.
As usual, Central will look to its
strong soccer program for help in the
kicking game.
Jed Kidd is the likely starter at punter,
but Garrett Johnson can punt, too.
The first couple of seasons in the
Western Piedmont Conference, it just
didn’t feel like their conference, the
coach said.
In this third season, most of the
players on the team have only known
this 2A league and it feels normal
to play Forbush and Carver while
skipping North Stokes and Bishop
McGuinness.
If the boys take care of the ball,
Central should be able to compete with
everybody on the schedule, Southern
said.

Husky football schedule released

WEST JEFFERSON — The 2015
football season will officially get underway on Aug. 21 when the Huskies hit
the road to North Surry, the first of an
11-game schedule.
Before the regular season starts, Ashe
will participate in a pair of scrimmages,
first on Aug. 12 at Surry Central and
then at home on Aug. 14 with East
Surry, Lincolnton and one other team to
be announced participating.
Ashe will have three other non-conference games after the season opener.
The Huskies host rival Watauga on Aug.
28, host Hibriten on Sept. 11 and go to
Alexander Central on Sept. 18.
The Huskies will have four conference
games at home and three conference
games on the road.
The Mountain Valley Athletic Confer-
ence season starts with Ashe traveling
to Sparta to take on Alleghany on Sept.
25.
After that, Ashe will host Wilkes Central and West Wilkes Oct. 2 and Oct. 9.
The Huskies wrap up its road portion
of the schedule at East Wilkes on Oct.
16 and at North Wilkes on Oct. 23.
The regular season ends with two
home games. The Huskies host Starmount on Oct. 30 and Elkin on Nov. 6
for Senior Night.
Homecoming festivities will take
place during the West Wilkes home
game.
All games will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
The junior varsity schedule will
feature all of the same teams except
for Hibriten. The JV team will play 10
games.
All JV games start at 7 p.m.

East Surry’s football team
capped off its 2014 regular
season with a thrilling 28-23
comeback victory over the
arch-rival Mount Airy Granite
Bears, but Cardinals Head
Coach Dave Diamont is
hungry for more.
Diamont is about to enter
his 29th season as East Surry’s
head coach. He knows how
important that regular season
finale is for the players and
fans, but he admitted that he’s
eager to change the culture
and succeed on an even bigger
stage in 2015.
“I’m tired of getting into
the playoffs and getting
embarrassed,” Diamont said.
“Playoffs. Let’s get into the
state playoffs and get after
people there.”
After finishing 10-2 last
year, the Cardinals will kick
off their new season against
North Surry, and they believe
they have the right recipe of
returning and new players to
satisfy their coach’s hunger.
Like most other teams, the
Cards lost their top rusher;
unlike other teams, the Cards
said goodbye to a recordsetting duo.

Lichtenberger were the first
Surry County teammates to
win at least a share of the
player of the year honors
in back-to-back seasons.
Koons was twice Northwest
Conference offensive player of
the year at running back, and
his linebacker buddy was twice
defensive player of the year.
Still, the cupboard is far
from bare, especially with the
throw-and-catch tandem of
quarterback Tyler Smith and
Receiver Blake Marion is a returning allconference selection.

Smith, who has verbally
committed to play baseball at
East Carolina, threw for 1,463
yards and 16 touchdowns as a
junior while only gifting five
interceptions.
Even in a run-centric offense
like East Surry, Diamont
knows that a returning
quarterback with meaningful
experience is valuable, and the
coach is excited to see Smith’s
improvements from last year.
“It’s been very enjoyable to
watch him develop since his
time as a freshman to where
he is now,” Diamont said.
“He really gets after it in the
weight room, and it’s going
to make for a stronger Tyler
Smith this year.”
The quarterback will have
no shortage of options when
he drops back to pass, as the
Cardinals return a bevy of
experienced receivers, led by
Marion, a preseason all-state
selection.
Marion caught 37 passes for
533 yards and five touchdowns
last season. Shawn Creed, Kim
Taylor and Jack Shabdue will
see time as well.
One position where the
Cardinals lack experience but
have plenty of depth is the
tight end spot. Diamont loves
to feature the tight ends in his
I-formation offense, and he’ll
have to choose two starters
among Charlie Freeman,
Garrett Barker, Travis Taylor
and Eli Russell.
Another position battle for
the Cardinals is at running
back to replace Koons.
Diamont has plenty of options,
but isn’t sure who will step
into that role as a starter.
Two of the leaders to earn
the starter responsibility are
Ty Brooks and Eddie Scott, a
couple of seniors who gained
limited experience running the
football last season. However,
Diamont also expects
sophomores Joey Ray and
Chase Allen to make an impact
in their first season on varsity.
“They all get along really
well, and the key is for them to

North Surry Greyhounds switch to air raid offense

MOUNT AIRY — No team
will look more different this fall
than North Surry.
After featuring a power running game for the past few
years under Head Coach Danny
Lyons, the Greyhounds will
show off their passing game this
season.
This isn’t a completely new
concept for the Hounds. Four
years back, then-coach Brian
Hampton went to a pass-heavy
offense that featured heavy
doses of Alex Ratcliff finding
Jacob Patten.
When Hampton left for Ashe
County and Lyons took over,
the defensive-minded coach
wanted to pound the ball 40 to
50 times a game.
The team had some success
in that approach, but injuries
have hampered the offense the
past two years. Lyons felt like
the team needed a change, so he
chose to hand off the offensive
coordinator title and focus more
on his defense once again.
When the decision was made
to switch to a passing attack,
it made sense to turn over play
calling to Patrick Taylor, who
has more experience in that
facet, said Lyons. Taylor has
been the defensive coordinator
since Lyons stepped up to head
coach, so now the two coaches
have swapped coordinator titles.
Once word spread through
the school that the team was
switching offenses, strange
faces showed up for summer
workouts.
Kids like to catch the ball,
so some boys who have never
played high school football suddenly turned out for the team,
he said. The Hounds have about
18 guys who can play either
receiver or defensive back, and
the coaches like what they see,
he noted.
Out of those 18, only one had
a starting spot guaranteed going
into exhibition games. That
one spot is for all-conference
returnee Colton Acord.
Last season, Acord caught
51 balls for more than 1,000
yards as a dynamic playmaker
on offense. He also had four or
five interceptions on defense to
make all-conference as a safety,
too, said Lyons.
“Colton’s done a tremendous
job of working on his strength
and speed,” said the coach. He
is more explosive and has legitimate 4.5 speed in the 40-yard
dash. With a playmaker like
that, the offense must find creative ways to get him the ball.
Baseball standout Chase
Chandler, who pitched the
Hounds to the West Regional
championship series, also was
the leading receiver on the JV
team a year ago. Now a junior,
Chandler will see most of his
time on offense.
He is about 6-foot-2 and
rangy, said Lyons. He runs well
and has good hands.
Tahjae Guy will see time at
both receiver and free safety.
Tahjae is the older brother of
Trevon Simmons, who started
on the varsity basketball team
as a freshman last winter.
Casey Hull will start at inside
linebacker, but will see some
time as a possession receiver,
too.
“His basketball acumen comes
out,” said Lyons of Hull’s ability to shield the defender away
from the ball in the red zone.
Casey has been good in 7-on-7
drills this summer.
Carson Todd, a sophomore,
has been a pleasant surprise
this summer. Rather than going
back to JV, Todd will move
up to varsity. Lyons said he is
about 6 feet tall and weighs 190
pounds, so he can hold his own
downfield.
Reid Stanley, younger brother
of last year’s QB Nolan Stanley,
is another baseball player with
good hands. Despite his small
stature, Reid has good toughness and won’t back down to
anyone, the coach said.
The player who will make the
offense go is quarterback Avery
Smith.
Avery has probably the strongest arm of any QB at North
Surry in the decade that Lyons
has been coaching, he believed.
“He had a really good year on
JV,” Lyons said. “He has a winner’s mentality.” The team was
7-1 with Avery starting and 0-2
when he was pulled up to be on

the varsity.
The team plans to play an up-tempo
style, often going without a huddle. That
puts more pressure on the quarterback.
Taylor said Smith has been preparing for this since back in February. The
young man has watched game film with
the coaches at the school and also gone
home and spent many hours watching
online videos.
Backing him up will be senior Luke
Mauldin.
Without Dakota Goss and FB Corbin
Bullins, the Hounds lack experience at
tailback.
The leading candidate is Andrew
Smith, who was the JV tailback last year.
Andrew isn’t a big guy, about 160
pounds, but he’s shifty and shows good
patience and vision. He catches the ball
well and despite his lack of bulk does
well in pass protection, said Lyons.

be unselfish, because they’re all
going to play,” Diamont said.
Offensive lineman Brandon
McKinney was an all-conference
selection as a junior. He is joined
by Ben Chilton and Luis Suarez,
but there will be competition for
the other two spots.
Junior Chris Cosgrove and
seniors Preston Snow, Bailey
Johnson and Tony Speaks are all
in the mix.
McKinney also will see time at
defensive tackle.
The senior is one of five other
returning starters for defensive
coordinator Randy Marion, who
knows the Cards have a lot of
holes to fill.
Joining McKinney on the
defensive line will be Suarez,
Speaks, Freeman and Corben
backer, might see some time at running
back, as will Jacob McHone.
In a spread formation, there isn’t a traditional tight end, but the receivers need
to be able to slide down and stick their
noses in when needed, he said.
While the receiver routes can appear
quite diverse, the offensive line isn’t as
complicated, according to Taylor.
Come to any practice, and the offensive line is working on the same drills
day after day, he said. The players have
to know the basics by heart. They need
to hear the same words so they memorize the vocabulary.
At center is returning starter Brayton
Fields. A compact 240 pounds, Brayton
was the most consistent lineman last
year, said Lyons. He will make line and
protection calls.
Junior Dustin Young is 5-foot-10 and
just 190, but he figures to start at one
guard spot.
Lyons said he would like to see sophomore Ryan Eldridge (5-foot-10, 275)
step up and take ownership of the other
guard spot so he can use senior Joseph
Simpson on defense.
Kiser. Kiser was an all-conference
selection as a sophomore but
missed most of the season with
injury.
“(Kiser) looks great in practice
so far and I’m thrilled to have
him back. He looks stronger and
motivated. He’s ready to get back
into it with us and impact the
game,” Marion said.
In the linebacker core,
Staymon Johnson will look to fill
Lichtenberger’s shoes. Marion
has no doubts that Johnson is
ready for the challenge.
“Staymon is really smart, and
he understands the game really
well,” Marion said. “He’s a great
leader out there on the field, and
he is a huge help to us coaches.”
Hunter Hellard will slide
in next to Johnson at middle
linebacker, while receivers
Marion and Creed should see
plenty of playing time on the
outside edge.

A JV starter moving up is Jarrett
Dehart, 6-foot-2 and weighs 215-220
pounds.
“He’s country strong and pretty good
on his feet,” said the coach.
On the other end of the line is a young
man that pulled off “the single greatest
improvement” that the coach has seen in
any offseason.
Last year Trey Stamper was a reserve
lineman.
“He has lived in the weight room since
February,” Lyons said. Trey toned up
from 200 pounds to 190 and is very well
put together. He uses his hands well and
holds his own against bigger men.
The offense really benefited from a
camp on May 9 led by longtime college
coach Hal Mumme, one of the founders
of the “air raid offense.”
Under Mumme’s guidance, Tim Couch
was a Heisman award finalist and the top
overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft.
As for the Hound defense, Lyons said
the team has started off in a 3-5 base the
past two years, but ended up transition-

Scott will be the other cornerback,
and the two will be supported
by safety Andrew Hooker, who
coaches expect to have a big first
season on varsity.
On special teams, Devon Goble
will handle the kicking duties and
quarterback Tyler Smith averaged
36.4 yards per punt last year.
Diamont believes he has
the right mix of returners and
fresh faces to change the script
this season. There are a lot
of positions up for grabs, but
Diamont hopes this ends up being
a positive.
“Competition is going to make
you better,” Diamont said. “I think
that’s what we have on this ball
club, and kids are going to play
their best just to earn a spot.”
