Welcome
This is a bittersweet time in my life as I find myself completing many final chapters.
This is my last year to serve on the board of trustees and my last year serving as the
Board Chair. This is also my last year having children at Bishop High.
My family and I have been blessed to have our children complete 12 years of
Catholic-based elementary and secondary education. Our children initially attended
a large, Diocesan Catholic school in San Jose for five years. We then moved to Santa
Barbara, where our kids had a wonderful experience at Marymount. And finally,
both children had the privilege to attend Bishop for their entire high school careers.
All three schools were very different, but they all stressed the Catholic values of faith,
community, and strong academics.
We are blessed at Bishop High with an amazing, dedicated and talented faculty, staff,
and administration who give to this school far beyond what is required of them.
They are dedicated to serving our most precious gifts, our students. The Board of
Trustees cannot thank you enough for your service to Bishop.
We are also blessed in this community with generous benefactors, alumni and
parents who donate money, time and skills to our school. On a yearly basis we
depend on these groups to support adopt-a-student, the annual fund, the Cardinal
Event and the gala auction. On behalf of the Board of Trustees we give you our
heartfelt thanks.
In order to continue to build Bishop’s future, we need to build our endowment to
help offset the rising costs of a Catholic, independent education. This endowment
will ensure that Bishop can maintain its high standards of academic excellence while
keeping tuition affordable. We will be talking with you more over the next year
about the many ways that you can support the endowment.
Thank you Bishop High for giving my family the gift of a Catholic education.
Go Cardinals!

Future
Dear Friends,
Over the course of the past eight decades as Dolores School, Catholic High, and
now Bishop High, we have become known as a strong community of faith-based
learners. Our current campus and school community boasts a beautiful park-like
setting, small class sizes with personalized instruction, a one-hundred percent college
acceptance rate, very competitive athletic programs, a plethora of honors, Advanced
Placement, and college level courses, and many faculty with advanced degrees, who
are experts in their discipline.
In 1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “We cannot always build the future for our
youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Many presidents and thousands
of alumni later, we continue to do just that at Bishop High. This school community
is rooted in our mission to promote the spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional
development of our students.
Each year we see significant advancements in technology, families graduate and new
families begin, and curriculum and facilities are upgraded, all in an effort to foster
growth and instill core values in the young women and men with whom we work
each day. The unwavering support and unparalled generosity of our benefactors has
afforded thousands of students the opportunity to learn, grow, and build for their
future through this special place we call Bishop High!
Thank you for your continued support. I invite you to join us on the next phase
of this journey as we embark on an endowment campaign to build the future for
generations of Cardinals to come. The following pages celebrate the partnership that
we as faculty, staff and school leadership share with you, our parents, alumni and
friends. Thank you!
Kindly,
Dr. Paul Harrington

Mission Statement
Bishop García Diego High School
is an independent Catholic co-educational secondary school that welcomes students of all faiths and provides
them with the spiritual, personal, and intellectual knowledge to meet the enduring challenge of realizing
their God-given potential in a multi-cultural society.
The Bishop High Parent Advisory Board is a volunteer service organization made up of parents/guardians of currently
enrolled students. Parent Advisory Board Representatives are selected each year to support the needs of the class
year they represent along with addressing the general needs of the school. Members focus on fostering cooperation,
communication and community among all elements of the school. The Board provides valuable services to the school
community by orchestrating support for student events that enrich each current student’s high school experience.

We trace the earliest roots of our school and every Catholic school in California to the educational system founded by Blessed
Junipero Serra, the tireless Apostle of California.
Bishop García Diego High School combines the rich heritage of two predecessor schools, Dolores School, which opened in 1932,
and Catholic High School, which opened in 1940. Both schools were on Micheltorena Street and were operated by Our Lady of
Sorrows Parish, under the Jesuit Fathers (S.J.) and the Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary (B.V.M.). The original campus is now
the home to Notre Dame School.
In 1959 the Archdiocese of Los Angeles assumed sponsorship of the school, moving it to the present site on La Colina Road and
taking California’s first bishop, Bishop Francisco García Diego y Moreno, as its patron.
In 2005 the school became an independent, not for profit, Catholic high school, that is governed by a Board of Trustees and
supported by tuition revenue, charitable contributions and endowment income.

The Cardinal Club is a service
organization comprised of parents/
guardians whose primary purpose
is to support the school’s athletic
program. Club members rally to
raise funds for the athletic program
and support the educational
programs of the school. The
members of the Club elect their
officers. The Cardinal Club
produces the football programs
for which they sell ads. Members
also manage ad sales for the

Volunteer of the Year
Mrs. Lisa Schlesselmann
One of the many blessings of having a student at Bishop High is the
opportunity for parents to be involved in the goings on around campus. Over
the past seven years Lisa Schlesselmann, has embraced that opportunity like
no one else. As a vital member of the Parent Advisory Board, every year Lisa
could found manning the class tables at Back to School Night, helping to get
the kids organized for Spirit Week, arranging refreshments for various events
and driving to athletic contests. Over the years though the centerpiece of Lisa’s
tenure on the Parent Board was when she picked up the baton from the Class
of 2007 Parent Reps and championed the cause of the After Prom Party. Every
year involved re-selling students and parents alike on the event, coordinating
volunteers and entertainment, soliciting raffle prizes and transforming the gym
in to a cozy lounge for the evening. No small task to be sure.
1
Maria Fazio, R.N., Chair, Board of Trustees Some might wonder what motivated Lisa to give so much of herself to Bishop.
When asked about that she responded “Everything I do is because I want our
kids to know how much they are loved and I want to bring the love of the Lord
to the kids.” That response would lead you to assume, correctly, that Lisa is one
of the most faith filled women you will ever have the good fortune to meet.
When Lisa leads an opening prayer it is no mere formality, but rather it serves
to inspire and focus everyone in attendance on the import and meaning of the
task at hand. In 2003 even before her boys were enrolled at Bishop she helped
pioneer what is now a daily opportunity for Adoration in Bishop’s chapel.
Having given so much to Bishop over the years it was only fitting that Lisa
and her husband, John, were the winners of the $20,000 grand prize raffle at
the 2011 Cardinal Event. True to form, Lisa and John used those winnings
to establish a scholarship that awards funds to cover the cost of books for an
incoming freshman from each of the three Catholic Schools in Santa Barbara.
Having received financial aid early on John and Lisa were aware of the need and
wanted to give back to the Bishop Community, because in Lisa’s words “that
was community money to begin with.”
If you met Lisa outside the gym you would never guess that this soft spoken
lady was always the LOUDEST mom in the stands. She would whoop it up for
everyone’s kids although it is certainly understandable that she be very proud of
both her sons. Michael (’09) is a senior at Santa Clara University and Patrick
(’12) is a freshman at Chapman University.
Lisa, on behalf of the entire Bishop Community, especially the kids, we thank
you for your tireless enthusiasm and devotion to our school.

Farewell
The TNT television hit “The Closer” went off the
air this summer after a long and critically acclaimed
run. The same could be said of Sister Theresa Reis,
Bishop High’s own “Closer,” when she retired in
the spring of 2011 after a highly successful run as
Bishop High’s Director of Development. Having
led Notre Dame School’s fundraising efforts for 27
years, Sister assumed the leadership role on Bishop’s
Development Team in the year 2000. Small in
stature but long on persistence and charm, Sister
has played a crucial role in fundraising campaigns
that have allowed Bishop to improve every facet
of the school. The continuing integration of
technology into the classrooms, campus and
athletic facility improvements, the compensation
of our devoted staff and faculty and the availability
of financial aid have all benefited from her efforts.
Sister Theresa Reis, SND
Development work is not for the faint hearted. It
is difficult to ask people to donate money to help a
cause, no matter how worthy. Fortunately for Bishop, Sister Theresa has a knack for bringing out the generosity in people.
The spiritual life at Bishop High, led by our one religious, Sister Helen
Wolkerstorfer, BVM, continues to be alive and well. We are also very fortunate to
have the dedication of our local retired and parish priests to support our school’s
ecclesiastical life.
This year several members of our Catholic community made it possible for us to
enrich the spiritual and communal side of our school by generously funding a
remodel of what had been the Home Economics classroom during the 60’s and
70’s. The result is a beautiful space we now call the Mission Center. This area is
open daily and is used regularly by students as a place to eat their lunches, use the
computers, check for community service opportunities and socialize with classmates.
The big screen TV, board games and puzzles seem to be a draw as well.
We are thrilled to have added some additional religious events to our school calendar
as a means of reinforcing our Catholic identity. In October we remembered the
Feast of St. Francis of Assisi by inviting students and alumni to bring their beloved
pets on campus for the Blessing of the Animals. In November, the Campus Ministry
team hosted a retreat for middle schools students from Notre Dame, Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel and St. Raphael’s schools. The students celebrated Mass together and
enjoyed the day playing interactive games and conversing in small groups. During
Catholic Schools Week in January, kindergarten through eighth graders from those
same local schools joined the Bishop student body in the gym for a celebration of
the Mass with Bishop Thomas Curry.

May God continue to bless Bishop Garcia Diego High School as we continue to love
and serve Him in all that we do.

By her own admission Sister has a bit of a sweet tooth, but she wisely counters her love of desserts by ordering sensible
favorites like salmon during her working lunches. And yes, even having turned 83 years old on August 28th and
celebrating 61 years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, you will still find her out there working on behalf of Bishop
High. She has often said that she is continually “touched by people’s goodness.” Well Sister Theresa, the entire Bishop
community is touched by your devotion to our school and we thank you for your many years of service and dedication.
Hopefully by now most of you have visited our fantastic new
website. It is easy to navigate and can answer any conceivable
question one might have about Bishop High. Well before
our new website, Bing or even Ask.com there was Carolyn
Taylor. Carolyn came to us from St. Joseph High School (a
package deal with Father Tom) and started as the Business
Office Manager in 2000. Fortunately for all of us she moved
down the hall in 2001 and became a welcoming, friendly and
supremely knowledgeable fixture in the front office for the next
11 years. Her ability to multi task is the stuff of legend. At
any given moment she could be simultaneously answering the
phone, signing in a student, printing up the football program
and whipping up something in the faculty lounge for a staff
luncheon. Did we mention she sews too?
Carolyn’s contributions, presence and hearty laugh will be
greatly missed, but we wish her the best of everything as she
relocates to Gilbert, AZ to be closer to her family. Carolyn has four
grown children and 9 adorable grandchildren to look after. It’s a safe bet
that those famous multi-tasking skills will be kept to good use.

Academics
The tradition of excellence in Catholic
education continues! The 2011-2012
academic year nurtured this tradition
in several notable ways, including the
substantial growth in new courses
such as Introduction to Engineering
and Programming, AP English and
Language Composition, Engineering
Physics, Animation Design and a
revised 9th grade religion course
Revelation in Scripture/ Mission and
Ministry of Jesus Christ. We were
also fortunate to offer an introductory
dance elective.
STEM + ART = STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art & Math)
Mrs. Brianna Adam, Dean of Science
and STEM Coordinator, continues
her work on partnering with the local
and national community to provide
our STEM students with internship
opportunities. Responding to student
interest and national trends, Mrs.
Adam further enhanced our STEM
program to include an arts component.
STEAM now has three concentrations:
Pre-Engineering, Bio-Sciences and Art
& Design. We are pleased to report
that participation in STEAM has
expanded from less than 10 students to
over 20.
Finally, we couldn’t have made the
advances we did without the dedication
and support of our highly educated
and qualified teachers who serve as
mentors and models of Christ for
our students. Of our fulltime faculty
22% hold doctorates, 62% masters
degrees and 100% have their teaching
credential. Our teachers attend weekly
professional development meetings to
improve their instructional skills and
to enhance the rigor and relevance
of the subject they are teaching in
Santa Barbara’s only Catholic, college
preparatory high school.
Beginning in the fall of 2011 we began
the task of interpreting the core values
of Bishop High. These values are
found on the school crest and serve as
a roadmap for carrying out our school
mission and help guide our students
toward fully embodying the Cardinal
Standards. They also determine
how we relate to one another, our
school community, local and global
community and the environment as
well. A huge debt of gratitude is owed
to the Core Values Committee for
their work on furthering the CatholicChristian mission of Bishop High
School.
Thank you for your support as we
continue to work together to prepare
our students academically to attend
the top universities in the world as well
as preparing them spiritually for their
life’s journey.

playoffs, led by All CIF guard Greer Shull. Coming off
a trip to the CIF finals in 2011, the boys basketball team
finished second in the Frontier League and advanced to
the second round of the CIF playoffs.
The 2011-2012 sporting season was tremendously
successful!
Under Coach Tom Crawford's direction, the football
program became Frontier League Champions. After
compiling a school record 11 wins in a row, the team
advanced to the East Valley Semi-Finals, losing to the
eventual state champion in a very competitive game.
This was the football program’s third trip to the final four
in the past six years. Coach Crawford was recognized
as coach of the year by the Frontier League for the
third time, while players Thomas Renick and Brandon
Gonzalez received all state honors, with Gonzalez being
voted football player of the year for all of Santa Barbara
County.
After returning to the helm of the baseball program in
2011, Dan Yokubaitis, former college All American and
member of the UCSB Hall of Fame, guided the boys to a
Frontier League Championship with an impressive 18-4
record. Players John Salda and Aidan Williams received
all CIF recognition for their efforts. Our softball team
won 14 games, advanced to the playoffs, and defeated
crosstown rival Santa Barbara three times during the
season. Representing the track and field program, Nicole
Poindexter earned the title of Frontier League Champion
in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and the long jump.
Poindexter advanced to the CIF finals, and was selected
as the Santa Barbara County athlete of the year for track
and field.
Our football program was not the only program making
noise in the post season! Former CIF Coach of the Year,
Jason Donnelly, guided the girls volleyball team into the
playoffs. The girls soccer team, coached by former Santa
Barbara City College Head Coach, Brent Gonsalves, also
advanced to the playoffs, with Gonsalves being honored
as Frontier League Coach of the Year. Alum Jeff Burich's
girls basketball team advanced to the second round of the
A majority of our sporting programs were very young

everyone optimistic for another successful year in the

Alumni Giving
To Bishop High, “technology” is more than just a buzz word.
We’ve incorporated it into every aspect of our curriculum
while retaining the one-on-one personal interaction you
expect from a private high school education. Bishop’s
unique balance of teacher-led instruction and state-of-the-art
technology prepares our students for college with an edge not
only in science and math, but also the humanities and arts.
laptop and tablet devices. Using new technologies, Bishop
students can move at their own pace using classroom wireless
devices yet still receive teacher guidance and personal
instruction whenever necessary. This same high-tech
classroom environment goes home with the student. Our
after-hours remote access program allows full access to class
materials and homework assignments via the Internet. And
parental notifications and grades are always available through
our Edline portal.
Bishop’s technology assets are leading edge with high-speed
wired and wireless networks, readily available Windows and
Macintosh workstations, and our fully-equipped media lab
and video production studio to support our well-regarded

Ronald Boeddeker, was a third generation Santa Barbaran. Ronald attended Catholic High School (the predecessor
school to Bishop High School), then located on the corner of Anacapa and Micheltorena streets. He Graduated
in 1956. After his collegiate basketball days were over, Ron still had his competitive spirit and decided to enlist, or
as some often felt, coerced, his employees, friends and business associates into a twice a week “friendly” game of
Basketball at the Bishop Diego Gym. These games led to lots of exciting and spirited rivalries, not to mention lots of
broken body parts over the years. He was so dedicated to his twice weekly games, that he created the code phrase…
”Mr. Boeddeker is at a Board meeting,” for his secretay to use if people called to ask if he was in. It is in this spirit that
we introduce the inaugural Ron Boeddeker Memorial 3 on 3 basketball tournament.

The tournament took place on April 14th and 15th, 2012 at Bishop Garcia Diego High School. Thirty-five local
teams and over 140 athletes took to the court to compete in tribute of long time Bishop supporter and basketball
junkie Ron Boeddeker. More than 100 games were played over the two days.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Red Bird Scholarship – a cause that was close to Boeddeker’s heart –
helping deserving students attend Bishop High. Please consider joining us us on April 13 - 14, 2013.

reserved, front row seating section for the
Annual Alumni Mass held in the main
gym. A slide show of yearbook photos from
their senior year was shown to everyone’s
enjoyment and Claudia (Dorsey) Lash and
Nancy (Nolan) Panizzon introduced fellow
members of their class. Claudia then gave
current students a tutorial on “how it was
back then” that the students enjoyed. Mario

their granddaughter Christie Delgadillo ’12,
presented the gifts together which was no
doubt a special moment for the family.

Adopt-A-Student
Welcome to the Jungle was the theme for the 2012 Bishop High gala auction held on March 3, 2012 on the
school campus, honoring Dr. James and Nancy Swift. Without benefactors such as the Swifts our school would be at a loss.
Without parents like the Swifts, our students would be at a loss. We thank Jim and Nancy for their generous spirit and for sharing
their two amazingly talented children Allison ‘12 and Chandler ‘14 with the Bishop High community.
The co-chairs/tigresses for this amazing event were Tina Agnoli, Claire (Bohnett) Mon ‘81 and Janna Price. These ladies, along
with local designer Lisa Carter and the Behind the Scenes crew helped to transform a cavernous space into an exotic jungle
paradise. So much hard work goes into the event and we are fortunate year after year to be able to tap into the creative energy of
our parent volunteers and staff who attend to every detail of this most important fundraising event.
It was a memorable night. The 200 plus guests were captivated by sought–after live auction items that included a week at a Padaro
Lane beach home, dinner party for 20 at the Busch’s Ranch or a sail aboard the Channel Cat. Following the Live Auction, guests
moved into the beautifully decorated practice gym for an incredible dinner buffet by Rincon Catering. The evening ended with
dancing until midnight to local live band, King Bee.
The year’s event raised more than $280,000 for the Adopt-A-Student program. The need-based financial aid program currently
offers assistance to 60% of Bishop High students. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and supported many deserving
students who could not otherwise attend Bishop.

Annual Fund
Head of School Circle
Each year the Head of School Circle Reception honors those who have contributed to the very foundation of the
school by supporting the renovation of the facilities, growth of innovative programs and financial aid that make Bishop
High the school it is today.
Each of these very special benefactors has a giving history since 2005 of more than $10,000 or has made a formal
commitment to the school via a planned gift. More importantly, their investment in Bishop High has helped us to
continue our mission of a faith based college preparatory education and to provide our students the opportunity to
learn grow and flourish.

ishop is a place of opportunity. Without the thoughtfulness and generosity
of those from our past, our students would not have the opportunities they
presently enjoy. Because this giving legacy carries on into the present we
share thanks and recognize those who help us build our future.
We hope you will continue to invest in our students as you have done in the past
and that you will partner with us to secure our future.
Visit our website www.bishopdiego.org to learn more about our Cardinal Legacy
Society or to become a member of the Head of School Circle or better yet, let’s get
together in person and talk more about the great things going on at Bishop!
To each of you who have given time, talent and financial support, on behalf of our
school community we thank you and ask God to bless you and your family.
The Cardinal Legacy Society is made up of generous benefactors who have
remembered Bishop in their estate plans. Deferred gifts through the Cardinal Legacy
Society are instrumental in the school’s ability to create and maintain new facilities,
improve our technological infrastructure, ensure that a Bishop education stays within
reach of deserving students regardless of their socio-economic background, and attract
and retain our teachers.

On Tuesday, September 4th longtime Business Manager, Chuck Roberts passed away
after a brief but brave battle with stomach cancer. Until his retirement in the summer
of 2012, Chuck spent eight years on the staff at Bishop Diego as a key behind the scenes
member of the team. His dedication, integrity and discretion could be counted on every
day as he interfaced with school families and supported the administration.
Chuck was a standout from his earliest days at Bishop having been honored with the
Cardinal Bulldog award for his outstanding effort on the football field. It was while in
high school that Chuck met and later married the love of his life, Harriet Bohnett ‘66.
Together they raised four great kids, Christina, Matt, Charlie ’96 and Cody ’10.
All of us here at Bishop were so inspired by Chuck’s decision to take a motorcycle trip
with his best buddies prior to his surgery this past July. It was a testament to his love
of life. Chuck we miss you. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your many friends and
family.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to your many friends and
family.

ishop is a place of opportunity.

Auction
Thank you to everyone who attended the event and supported many deserving
students who could not otherwise attend Bishop.

their senior year was shown to everyone’s
enjoyment and Claudia (Dorsey) Lash and
Nancy (Nolan) Panizzon introduced fellow
members of their class. Claudia then gave
current students a tutorial on “how it was
back then” that the students enjoyed. Mario

their granddaughter Christie Delgadillo ’12,
presented the gifts together which was no

Technology
Bishop’s technology assets are leading edge with high-speed
wired and wireless networks, readily available Windows and
Macintosh workstations, and our fully-equipped media lab
and video production studio to support our well-regarded
communications and video arts programs.
You expect and your child deserves the most up-to-date
educational technology to prepare for college and a future
career in these challenging economic times. Bishop High’s
technology program meets these demands.
We are now embarking on our latest technology program:
One-to-One Computing. This will provide “anytime and
anywhere” access to curriculum and media using portable

playoffs, led by All CIF guard Greer Shull. Coming off
a trip to the CIF finals in 2011, the boys basketball team
finished second in the Frontier League and advanced to
the second round of the CIF playoffs.
Alum Jeff Burich's
girls basketball team advanced to the second round of the
A majority of our sporting programs were very young
last year, and many key players are returning, making
everyone optimistic for another successful year in the
athletic department.

Academics
The tradition of excellence in Catholic
education continues! The 2011-2012
academic year nurtured this tradition
in several notable ways, including the
substantial growth in new courses
such as Introduction to Engineering
and Programming, AP English and
Language Composition, Engineering
Physics, Animation Design and a
revised 9th grade religion course
Revelation in Scripture/ Mission and
Ministry of Jesus Christ. We were
also fortunate to offer an introductory
dance elective.
STEM + ART = STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art & Math)
Mrs. Brianna Adam, Dean of Science
and STEM Coordinator, continues
her work on partnering with the local
and national community to provide
our STEM students with internship
opportunities. Responding to student
interest and national trends, Mrs.
Adam further enhanced our STEM
program to include an arts component.
STEAM now has three concentrations:
Pre-Engineering, Bio-Sciences and Art
& Design. We are pleased to report
that participation in STEAM has
expanded from less than 10 students to
over 20.
Finally, we couldn’t have made the
advances we did without the dedication
and support of our highly educated
and qualified teachers who serve as
mentors and models of Christ for
our students. Of our fulltime faculty
22% hold doctorates, 62% masters
degrees and 100% have their teaching
credential. Our teachers attend weekly
professional development meetings to
improve their instructional skills and
to enhance the rigor and relevance
of the subject they are teaching in
Santa Barbara’s only Catholic, college
preparatory high school.
Beginning in the fall of 2011 we began
the task of interpreting the core values
of Bishop High. These values are
found on the school crest and serve as
a roadmap for carrying out our school
mission and help guide our students
toward fully embodying the Cardinal
Standards. They also determine
how we relate to one another, our
school community, local and global
community and the environment as
well. A huge debt of gratitude is owed
to the Core Values Committee for
their work on furthering the CatholicChristian mission of Bishop High
School.
Thank you for your support as we
continue to work together to prepare
our students academically to attend
the top universities in the world as well
as preparing them spiritually for their
life’s journey.

2011 - 2012 Annual Report
