PBS Hawaii at a Glance
Locally Owned, Educational Broadcaster
PBS Hawaii is the only locally owned statewide
television station in Hawaii. We are a nonprofit
multimedia organization dedicated to education.
We are the federally licensed statewide educational
broadcaster in the Islands and the only Hawaii
member of the trusted Public Broadcasting
Service (PBS).
Lead with Our Mission
Through on-air and online platforms,
we advance learning and discovery
with storytelling that touches lives.
PBS Hawaii trasmitter/translator locations from Kauai to Hawaii Island.
The Widest Reach
With broadcast transmitters on Oahu and Maui, along with 12 translators on Kauai and Hawaii
Island, our broadcasting system provides free, over-the-air television to six populated islands,
including all 25 of the most financially disadvantaged areas in Hawaii, as identified by the 2012 U.S.
Census. In some of these areas, we’re the only available broadcaster. With online and live streaming
delivery of locally produced programs, we’re also reaching the world with stories of Hawaii.

Distinctive Local Programs
“…my ancestors were about multiple lifetimes. Generations and generations participated
in the furthering of our race. We used to think far beyond our own individual capacities,
to maintain and to build our lahui. PBS is part of that maintenance. It helps us to maintain
a really strong connection to the people of our community and the land upon which we live.”
Aaron Salā
Assistant Professor of Hawaiian Music and Ethnomusicology
University of Hawaii at Manoa
With locally produced programs like Na Mele, Insights on PBS Hawaii and Long Story Short,
PBS Hawaii is the only broadcaster in the Islands with a traditional Hawaiian music program,
regularly scheduled live public affairs program and weekly oral history program, respectively.
In addition, through HIKI NŌ digital media training sessions, Keiki Club children’s events,
community screenings and conversational engagement on social media, PBS Hawaii augments
its programs with a personal touch.
Last year, PBS Hawaii captured the music, stories, culture and people that help us understand one
another and experience the world around us. PBS Hawaii continues to be a repository for these
stories and music and people, to be enjoyed by future generations.
The following is a summary of highlights from last fiscal year:
HIKI NŌ
“Working on HIKI NO- made me realize how
important the little things are that add up to
become a big thing. It showed me how
important teamwork is and how if one person
doesn’t do their part the whole project fails.”
Skyye Bettencourt
Kalaheo High School Student
Students from Kua o ka La PCS Milolii Hipuu Virtual Academy
6 PBS Hawaii | FY 2014
Fiscal Year July 2013 - June 2014 | Year in Review
HIKI NŌ is the only statewide digital literacy and learning initiative of its kind in the state and the U.S.
PBS Hawaii’s flagship educational initiative was specifically designed to address the widening gap between the
“haves” and “have nots” in Hawaii, when drastic cuts in public education left many youth unable to access quality
opportunities for growth and development. To assess its efficacy, we are working with professional evaluators to gather
quantitative and qualitative data on HIKI NŌ’s impact teaching 21st-century and workforce skills. What will greatly
assist PBS Hawaii in evaluating HIKI NŌ’s effectiveness: a three-year, $2.1 million grant from the Stupski Family
Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation. The grant will help develop HIKI NŌ into an intra-curricular elective
sanctioned by the Hawaii State Department of Education and embedded into Hawaii’s public school system for
middle and high schools. This three-year project will secure HIKI NŌ’s future as an educational initiative.
HIKI NŌ by the Numbers
Stories produced and aired: 126
Participating students: 500
Participating teachers: 100
Communities featured in host segments: 18
Participating schools: 85
53 Public | 11 Charter | 21 Private
Through HIKI NŌ, students from very different
neighborhoods across the islands have a statewide platform
to share their regional stories. Their communities may
rarely be heard in commercial media.
Last year, four remote, rural schools on Hawaii
Island debuted on HIKI NŌ after an intensive
HIKI NŌ digital media training session in April 2014:
•
•

•
Kua o ka La PCS Milolii Hipuu Virtual Academy
Kau High School
Kanu O Ka Aina PCS
Volcano School of Arts and Sciences
Victoria Cuba, a Waipahu High School graduate, was a
featured guest on an episode of Long Story Short with
Leslie Wilcox
Last year also saw the premiere of a HIKI NŌ show featuring a full half hour of stories on or about Maui,
as well as an episode hosted by students on Lanai.
Several HIKI NŌ graduates from the class of 2014 have gone on to college film, communications
and journalism programs, citing the HIKI NŌ experience as either inspiring or validating the choice.
One such graduate, Victoria Cuba from Waipahu High School, revealed her experiences as a homeless high school
student in a HIKI NŌ story. That story caught the eye of Hawaii News Now reporter Jim Mendoza, who did a
ratings-period feature story on Victoria. As a result, her situation was brought to the attention of a mass audience,
which put a human face to Hawaii’s growing homeless population. Victoria has received a full scholarship,
including room and board, to attend UH Manoa in Fall 2014, where she plans to major in communications.
Later in 2014, Victoria will also be appearing in a full, half-hour episode of Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox.
7 PBS Hawaii | FY 2014
Fiscal Year July 2013 - June 2014 | Year in Review
The 2013 HIKI NŌ Awards recognized outstanding student stories that served as models for all students.
In a PBS Hawaii first, winners were unveiled via live stream and ITVS’s OVEE platform on PBSHawaii.org.
Students and teachers from across the state celebrated simultaneously through technology, without the
burden of travel expenses.
INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAII
“PBS Hawaii is a place where you can think about what’s important.”
Bruce Voss
PBS Hawaii Board Member
Hawaii’s only live, primetime, weekly and interactive public affairs program informed and engaged island residents. With hosts Malia Mattoch, Daryl Huff and Mahealani Richardson, Insights on PBS Hawaii is a forum
where diverse viewpoints and spirited discussion can yield understanding. The entire state of Hawaii is invited
to join the conversation with their questions and
comments via phone, email or social media.
Guests and topics are selected in the public interest,
with particular thought given to subjects that may
not get covered in depth – or at all – on commercial
media. Last year, Insights discussed a number of
topics, including mental health care for native
Hawaiians, homelessness in our neighborhoods,
native Hawaiian governance, death with dignity, the
Affordable Care Act and same sex marriage. Insights
also brought Hawaii’s four mayors to the table to
discuss the needs of their individual communities.
Malia Mattoch leads engaging and informative discussions as
host of Insights on PBS Hawaii
A special edition of Insights provided a forum with a live audience to meet Christen Marquez, the filmmaker
and the subject of a PBS Hawaii Presents offering, E Haku Inoa. The forum gave both a studio audience and
the statewide audience an opportunity to discuss the topics of the film: a woman’s struggle to re-connect with
her estranged mother, and mental health issues within the Hawaiian community.
At the tail end of FY14, Insights also began its coverage of Election 2014, giving candidates an opportunity
to debate their differences and discuss the issues affecting their communities. Insights on PBS Hawaii is the
only live, primetime, weekly televised community affairs program that gives the entire state of Hawaii the
opportunity to engage in the conversation.

NA MELE
“Being a place where we can love and hold dear the things
that matter to us, is what makes PBS so special.”
Susan Eichor
Chief Operating Officer, aio Hawaii
Na Mele is the only broadcast program that showcases the songs, artists and
stories of traditional Hawaiian music. Last year, Na Mele brought back the
memories and songs from Hawaii’s past through traditional Hawaiian music
and dance.
• Peter Medeiros, accompanied by the dancers of Pua Ali‘i ‘Ilima,
presented the songs that shaped him as a musician
• The Leo Nahenahe Singers, four tutus with a kolohe attitude,
filled the PBS Hawaii studio with their joyful voices
• Ohta-San showed us why he is still one of Hawaii’s virtuouso ukulele players.
• Jerry Santos gave us the warmth, comfort and memories of home
through his music and lyrics
“I remember days when we were younger.
We used to catch ‘o‘opu in the mountain stream.”
Jerry Santos
Jerry Santos
Through Na Mele, PBS Hawaii continues to give Hawaii’s artists a stage where they can share not only their
music, but also their stories. The rich history of Na Mele, with performances by Aunty Genoa Keawe, Dennis
Kamakahi, Boyce Rodrigues, Bill Kaiwa, Emma Veary, Robert and Roland Cazimero, Kealii Reichel and many
more of Hawaii’s artists, past and present, is an archive of treasures that will live for generations to enjoy.
LONG STORY SHORT WITH LESLIE WILCOX
“I like to listen to some of the things that Leslie Wilcox and her interviews are trying to say...
and it’s through stories like that that bring me back to not only what this generation is
trying to do with their life, but also about the past generations and what happened.”
Shisa Kahaunaele
HIKI NŌ and Kamehameha Schools alumna
Elegant in its simplicity, Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox shares the life lessons and oral
histories of a diverse spectrum of intriguing people from Hawaii and beyond.
9 PBS Hawaii | FY 2014
Fiscal Year July 2013 - June 2014 | Year in Review
Among the special individuals Leslie Wilcox,
PBS Hawaii’s President and CEO, sat down
with last year:
Alice Greenwood on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox
• Homeless advocate Alice Greenwood,
who shared her personal story of being
homeless on the west side of Oahu
• Alvin Wong, The Happiest Person in America,
who spoke about what he felt makes a person happy
• Olin Lagon, who shared the lessons he learned from
his mother about family and overcoming obstacles
• Nick Vujicic, born without arms or legs, who
showed us what a positive attitude can accomplish
“…when I looked myself in the mirror, I said, ‘Okay, Nick, you have no arms, no legs,
but your eyes are beautiful; hold onto something. Nick, you can’t do sports, but you’re good at
mathematics.’ Give yourself a chance.”
Nick Vujicic
Only Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox is able to present such a wide range of subjects for Hawaii’s
television and online viewers.
LEAHEY & LEAHEY
With men from two different generations talking “sports and other
living things,” Jim and Kanoa Leahey’s kitchen was a busy scene.
Leahey & Leahey welcomed a variety of sports figures to join
them in conversation, including:
•
•
•
•
University of Hawaii coaches Norm Chow,
Laura Beeman and Dave Shoji
University of Hawaii coach Dave Shoji joins Jim and
Maui-born World Series winner Shane Victorino
Kanoa Leahey for an episode of Leahey & Leahey
Surf champion Carissa Moore
All-American University of Hawaii volleyball player Emily Hartong
Leahey & Leahey also provided a local point of view of the national PBS program FRONTLINE: League of
Denial, an investigative report on concussions in professional football players. To discuss this issue, the Leaheys
invited former National Football League safety Rich Miano, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the NFL.
Mix in doses of “Pop’s Poetry” segments with two of Hawaii’s most experienced sports reporters, and you get a
program that is a comforting, informative and entertaining gathering place for sports conversation.

PBS HAWAII PRESENTS
“PBS Hawaii is the home for everything that is wonderful about Hawaii.
It’s where you meet people, you meet the talent, you meet the wisdom.”
Dr. David McEwan
PBS Hawaii Board Member
PBS Hawaii Presents, our showcase for independent films about local culture and communities, offered
films that stimulated thought, reflection and emotion.
Last year, The Untold Story made its broadcast debut on
PBS Hawaii. This documentary, which combined historical facts with dramatic recreations, unveiled the history of
Japanese American internment camps in Hawaii during
World War II.
Seeds of Hope gave us a comprehensive look at the state
of our local agriculture industry, from small taro farmers
to large cattle ranches.
With these and other independent films, PBS Hawaii
Presents helps provide a voice to local storytellers and
diverse issues.
Students from Waikiki Elementary School learn to cultivate
a variety of vegetables in Seeds of Hope
PBS Hawaii, in partnership with Pacific Islanders in Communications, proudly presented Season Three
of Pacific Heartbeat. Season Three of this nationally distributed series displayed a wide range of stories
about the people and places of the Pacific region. Pacific Heartbeat celebrated the Golden Anniversary
of the Merrie Monarch Festival, investigated the cause of a mysterious illness on the island of Guam,
heard the music and history of The Brothers Cazimero, and profiled a master of traditional kākau
(Hawaiian tattooing) and a Maui taro farmer fighting for water rights.
LOCAL SPECIALS
Students from across the state compete on live television during the aio Hawaii State Spellling Bee
For the fourth consecutive year, PBS Hawaii was the
only place where Hawaii could see the live television
broadcast of the aio Hawaii State Spelling Bee. The
competition between the 14 finalists came down to
two contestants from the Big Island: Hope Kudo from
Kailua-Kona and Christianne Abella from Kealakekua.
Christianne correctly spelled the word “plangency” to
become the first girl in four years to win the Bee.

Last year, PBS Hawaii launched ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, a series of spots featuring Hawaiian culture and language
experts talking about what the Hawaiian language means to them, and what role it will play in Hawaii’s
future. When asked why people should learn to speak, read and write Hawaiian, Aaron Salā, Assistant
Professor of Hawaiian Music and Ethnomusicology at the University of Hawaii, said, “You miss out!”
PBS Hawaii visited Ewa Elementary
School to record their fifth graders’
recital of the Gettysburg Address. The
resulting spot, broadcast in conjunction
with Ken Burns’ The Address, featured
the Ewa Elementary students speaking
about the process of memorizing Abraham Lincoln’s famous speech, and the
meaning behind the words. This short
piece, combined with an article in our
monthly program guide, displayed the
pride that the Ewa Elementary students,
their teachers and their principal had in
their accomplishment.
Students from Ewa Elementary School recite the Gettysburg Address
“Public television has always been about quality production of local people and local events
and local culture. So it allowed all of Hawaii’s people to see themselves, and to have our stories
told both for ourselves, but also to be told to the world. We do celebrate being native Hawaiian
at our base. And then we celebrate all the cultures that come and overlay on top of that.
The most positive things in the world come from the diversity we have. And I think PBS
has always been phenomenal at showing that diversity without judgment.”
Robbie Alm
Chair, PBS Hawaii Board
PBS Hawaii serves all of Hawaii as a source of entertainment, information and education. With Insights
on PBS Hawaii, Na Mele, Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, HIKI NŌ, Leahey & Leahey and
PBS Hawaii Presents, combined with the broad spectrum of national PBS programs and a deep archive of
local culture, personalities, artists and music, PBS Hawaii stands out as a singular non-commercial media outlet
providing a rich diversity of broadcast and online programming, serving the entire state of Hawaii and the world.

A SAFE HAVEN FOR HAWAII’S CHILDREN
PBS Hawaii is the only local member of the trusted Public Broadcasting Service. Because of this, we are
able to offer a dedicated children’s channel that parents and caregivers count on as a safe place for their keiki
around the clock. In addition, daytime children’s programming on our main channel is free over the air, so
even families without cable service can access educational programs for their kids.
PBS KIDS by the Numbers:
• PBS is the #1 source of media content for pre-school teachers
• Kids who watched Super Why! scored 46% higher on
standardized tests than those who didn’t
Number of literacy programs: 6
Number of science programs: 5
Number of math programs: 6
Number of social skills programs: 10
A FREE PROVIDER OF INTERNATIONAL NEWS
NHK World is a premium cable channel,
so in most parts of the U.S., viewers would
need a premium cable subscription to access
international news from an Asian perspective. To bring Hawaii quality, international
news coverage from Asia, where many of our
residents and visitors have ties, PBS Hawaii
has a robust arrangement with NHK World to
air its programs. Through this arrangement,
PBS Hawaii is able to provide premium NHK
World programs to more viewers, through
over-the-air and basic cable services.

LOCAL TOUCHES AND COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS
PBS Hawaii hosted community screenings for popular Masterpiece programs Downton Abbey and
Sherlock. Both events brought communities together around common interests, engaged an audience
that most PBS stations historically have not engaged – our future supporters, teenagers and young
adults – and provided a local touch to nationally provided programs. It also highlighted collaborations
with businesses in the local community to help spread the mission and programs of PBS Hawaii.
– For the free, advanced screening of the
Downton Abbey Season Three premiere,
PBS Hawaii partnered with Yelp Hawaii,
the local chapter of the popular online review
community. Yelp Hawaii provided in-kind
help in securing food and tea vendors and
welcoming 50 local “Yelpers” to the
PBS Hawaii studio.
Guests gather in the PBS Hawaii studio for a season premiere
screening of the popular series, Downton Abbey
– PBS Hawaii partnered with Consolidated
Theatres to present a free, advanced screening
of the Sherlock Season Three premiere. More
than 400 fans of all ages gathered for a shared
experience of watching their favorite program
on the big screen. Consolidated Theatres
provided its largest Ward auditorium at no
cost, and executed free promotion of the event
on their social media channels. PBS Hawaii
also publicized the event through social media,
free radio and newspaper publicity and a movie
poster at the Ward location.

Technical Advances
PBS Hawaii works year-round to improve audio and
video quality and clarity, and to expand distribution to
more viewers, even in the farthest reaches of our island
state. Our investment in Hawaii’s people includes
advances in delivering emergency disaster warnings
and receiving programs.
Next-Generation Emergency System
During a state of emergency or natural disaster,
Hawaii’s citizens need to be informed to ensure safety. With the new PBS WARN project, PBS Hawaii can
help keep communities informed by delivering emergency alerts from FEMA to mobile phone subscribers,
even when internet connections are down. Because of the WARN
program, cellular operators that could not otherwise add redundancy
to their operations will be able to keep their subscribers informed, as if
they had their own satellite backup system.
Enhancing Our Service on Hawaii Island
Hawaii Island is our largest over-the-air audience in the state. We have
upgraded our service to the people of Hawaii Island by converting our
Mauna Loa site to a licensed translator, often called a “junior transmitter.” This change protects us from broadcast interference. With this
upgrade, there are now seven Hawaii Island translators.
More Reliability and Quality Control
in Receiving Programs
To ensure quality and reliability in obtaining national programs,
PBS Hawaii implemented the PBS Non-Real Time (NRT) system,
which delivers programs as digital files instead of satellite transmissions. These files are not subject to impairments that sometimes
affect satellite delivery, like bad weather.
Funding Secured for New Website
PBS Hawaii will be enhancing the way it delivers programs and web-exclusive content to online viewers in
Hawaii and worldwide. To achieve this, PBS Hawaii secured a $40,000 grant from the FLEX Grant program
of the Omidyar ‘Ohana Fund of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation.
