Working way up is way to go Peek into artist’s life and recording in pencil the development of this growing city. Rees drew public buildings such as the Brisbane General Post Office and the Treasury Building, but was also inspired by the construction of St John’s Cathedral. Academically, Rees did not fare particularly well in mathematics or physics, but this made no difference in his ability to render architecture in pencil on paper. He was attracted to features particular to religious architecture, such as columns and window finishes on exteriors, but he also captured the reverence of interior space created by soaring walls and high ceilings. Rees made these drawings in the early 20th century, a time that predated the infiltration of motor vehicles on to city streets. Instead, horses and carts are pictured alongside sketches of SMILE! Looking back on that now, it was the best lesson our parents could have given us. My advice to the youth is be strong; respect your peers and your elders because it’s all part of character building to make you a better adult and a better manager. Look at Kerry Packer for example, his father made him work from the ground up before he ever became chairman. He had to work in many positions, and from that he gained experience and knew how to handle every situation when his time came. You’ll come out on the other side a much better leader. This is where an artist’s ability deftly captures a scene, or an idea occurs, and it is in the sketchbook where it feels like pure skill is on display. Brisbane-born Lloyd Rees (1895-1988) is one such artist, and a collection of his drawings – many from his sketchbooks – along with a small selection of paintings and drawings is on display at Rockhampton Art Gallery. Lloyd Rees: Life and Light is a touring exhibition from Queensland Art Gallery. It is a delightful exhibition curated by Michael Hawker, and many of the drawings on show were gifted to the Queensland Art Gallery from the family of Lloyd Rees. He was a prolific drawer, and as a young man would often wander the streets of inner Brisbane observing WORKING your way up to the top throughout your career is an exciting, challenging and rewarding journey. Talking to business colleagues and clients, there’s a common perception that members of today’s younger generation entering the business world don’t seem to want to work their way to the top, but want to go straight there. A managerial position requires experience. And with age and knowledge come more responsibility. To be a manager you need life/work experience to deal with situations. When I was growing up my parents bought a dairy farm. My younger brother and I helped Mum milk the cows before and after school from the time I was in Year 3 to Year 8. I used to get upset that all our other friends in town got pocket money for making their bed, but we didn’t get paid for milking the cows, so working hard was instilled in us from a young age. It was just what we had to do, and in the long run it instilled great work ethics Reach more buyers Also FSC BINGO 1.30pm Tuesday Courtesy Bus: Southside pickup 5pm- Northside 6pm 105 Clifton Street | Ph 4926 1828 Just what you’re looking for 4861625aa BRAD Butcher has a voice that can silence the room with the softest of melodies.
