Of course, you can always pledge more if you like, or make a flat contribution of at least $20. It’s easy! Register on-line, go to www.golfsanantonio.org. Boysville’s number is 61! How we will benefit… Boysville will receive 100% of every penny we raise through Birdies for Charity. Boysville cares for children who have been physically, emotionally and/or sexually abused. By participating in Birdies for Charity you support these children in need. Funds raised from this program go to our Infant and Toddler Program in the Thompson Emergency Shelter. How you can get a chance to get a brand new car… If you correctly guess the number of birdies made from Wednesday- Sunday of the tournament, you could win a 2006 Buick vehicle or become eligible for a random drawing of more than 100 prizes Believe it or not, Boysville’s Wildest Auction in the West is in its fortieth year of raising money to care for the children who live on our campus every day. From its most humble beginnings in the barn down at the stockyards… to the free breakfast on campus… to last year’s record breaking turnout and most money raised, the Auction is a great place to eat, drink and mingle with friends. The Wildest Auction in the West started as a barn sale in Freeman Coliseum. Animals raised in the Boysville barn were sold to local farmers and ranchers. The auction moved onto the Boysville campus in 1966. The staff started at 4:30 in the morning making their own cowboy breakfast, and invited the public to visit Boysville, eat and bid on animals, plants and a few selected silent auction items from the Boysville Thrift Store. As times changed, the Auction moved off-site and has raised more money each year for our children. Last year, the Wildest Auction in the West raised an astounding $225,000! Big auction favorites included lunches with David Robinson and honorary chair Red McCombs, as well as a Montana Fly Fishing trip and a trip to the U.S. Open Golf Tournament. The 2006 Wildest Auction in the West is shaping up to be even bigger! Our featured live auction item is a 1968 Blue Shelby GT, fully restored and valued at over $125,000. Other items include a custom playhouse designed by Fisher-Heck Architects and built by Character House Custom Homes, a Disney World family vacation, Joshua Creek Bird Hunt, 12 ga. Shotgun and AKC registered Brittany Spaniel Puppy and so much more! Judge Nelson and Tracy Wolff are serving as this year’s honorary chairs with our favorite KENS-5 meteorologist, Bill Taylor. Dan Kruse is serving as this year’s auctioneer. Live entertainment is Two Tons of Steel. Guests also might try their hand at Texas Hold ‘Em or Blackjack table and try to win $25 and $50 prizes. Sponsorships levels are available and can be seen on www.wildestauction.org. Make your reservations now and attend this year’s Wildest Auction in the West. CWS Capital Partners brought 200 volunteers to our campus and in one afternoon painted the interior of six cottages; landscaped the courtyard; and updated our recreation room. April was our busiest month as Steve Vandervorste and Patrick Sheridan brought six large carnival rides and set up a carnival just for the Boysville children. We rode a giant pirate ship, climbed through a fun house and went round and round on a Mega Bounce. Many volunteers helped set-up and run game booths and each child went home with lots of carnival prizes. El Pollo Loco generously donated lunch for the children and volunteers. It was a beautiful day and the children did not want it to end. Our “Thrift Store Chic” Fashion Show showcased the beautiful young ladies of Boysville. Special thanks to Leslie Mouton for being our master of ceremony, and to Diana Barrios-Trevino for the keynote address. Volunteers from the University of Incarnate Word staged this entire show dressed our girls in fabulous fashions from our own Boysville Thrift Store. 4 The Boysville Residential program participated in a Spring Semester Grade War. The winning cottage would receive season passes to Fiesta Texas. Sien and Ridgeway Cottages tied for first place with an 83 overall average. The residential program plans to repeat the grade war once again in the fall and hopes to see even higher overall GPA’s. Several of our young adults graduated. Kerry, a former resident, graduated from Texas A&M University with a Sports Management degree. Rosie graduated from Judson High School and gathered over $15,000 in scholarships and financial aid to attend the Texas Culinary Academy. Cordera graduated from Judson High School and after receiving good news on his high SAT scores, hopes to study Law Enforcement. We wish all of our graduates well. The 40th Annual Wildest Auction in the West is scheduled for August 25th and preparations are well underway. This is our largest and most exciting fundraiser for the programs at Boysville. With Bill Taylor as the master of ceremonies and Dan Kruse as auctioneer, and Two Tons of Steel as our entertainment, there are sure to be some surprises. Seeing our young adults excel assures me that Boysville is staying true to its mission, providing a safe family environment to children in need so that they may become responsible adults. Thanks to our hard working staff, our loyal volunteers, our dedicated board members and our generous donors, these young adults truly exemplify this mission. Lenna J. Baxter CEO, Boysville Inc. boysville thrift store lenna’s letter boysville thrift store needs you! Shortly after the doors of Boysville opened in 1943, a small group of women led by Vicki Moffett offered their services to help care for the thirty-three boys living at the Avenue A location. These women cooked, cleaned, washed clothing and helped rear the boys. They provided love and compassion for these orphaned children. In 1952, Mrs. R. Lee Moffett, Mrs. Kent Hunt, Mrs. E.M. Stinson, Mrs. E.B. Jones and Mrs. Gidney Talley formed the Boysville Auxiliary as an independent non-profit corporation to continue their mission of helping the boys of Boysville. In 1954, the Boysville Thrift Shop opened in an effort to raise money for the children of Boysville, and to provide new and used clothing for the boys. The auxiliary provided special tutoring and PTA representation at the boys’ schools. They clothed the teenagers going to college and in some cases, helped pay the tuition. Today, the Boysville Thrift Store, located at 307 W. Olmos Drive, continues it mission of providing clothes and college scholarships provided through the Hunter Fund, established by Mrs. J.R. Hunter. The Thrift Store is still run by the Boysville Auxiliary. Donations are taken or picked-up daily. The Auxiliary is an organization whose strength and foundation rely on love and generosity. The auxiliary numbers are dwindling and volunteers are needed to continue to run the shop by sorting through the many generous donations given by the community, helping to hang clothes and run the register. Groups or individuals wanting to volunteer their time should contact Vangie at the Thrift Store, 826-2195. Donations may be dropped off at the Thrift Store or pick-ups can be arranged by calling 659-1901. heatwave golf tournament Hot time in the city! The 7th Heatwave Golf Tournament will be hotter than ever on August 19, 2006 at the Canyon Springs Golf Club. The tournament, created by Edward DeWees III, is a great way to have fun and benefit the children of Boysville. DeWees strives to carry on his grandparents’ philanthropic legacy to provide funds for programs helping children in need. What started as 20 friends playing golf and donating $500 has evolved into a tournament that last year raised over $45,000 for the children of Boysville. The Heatwave Committee will host a Pre-Tournament Dinner on August 18, 2006 at the beautiful Valero Energy Corporation Headquarters. The evening will include a delicious BBQ dinner, and silent and live auctions. The Robert Henry Band will provide live entertainment. Cost of the dinner is included in the registration fees, but dinner tickets also can be purchased separately. The committee is comprised of Edward DeWees III, Mark Meador, Judy Jackson, Seth Bell, Robert Renner, Brooks Holzhausen, Aaron Bengoechea, Teresa Hackebeil, Johnny Canavan, Beth Reinhardt, Judy Jackson, William Galvan, Collie Owens and Lance Surovik. The Heatwave Charity Golf Tournament will tee off on August 19th at 8:30 a.m. at Canyon Springs Golf Club. Sponsorship levels are still available and participants can register on-line at www.heatwavegolf.com. The word conjures up images of broncs, bulls, chaps, spurs and cowboy hats. The sport evolved as cowhands gathered at spring brandings and showed their prowess with horses, cattle and ropes. Rodeo has welcomed champions of many diverse ethnicities, including Bill Pickett, Leon Coffe, Fred Ward, Lee Akins, Leo Camarrillo, Adam and Gilbert Carrillo and two-time world champion and current PRB leader Adriano Morias. The sport of rodeo has become more sophisticated and has grown to include many associations of all ages, developed a sports medicine team, and been progressive in keeping cowgirls and cowboys safe. It also stresses family values, good morals and the importance of faith. Enjoy the pictures of our residents as they safely ride, buck, race and compete against each other atop stick horse ponies and our world famous bull, Ojo de Oro or Eye of Gold. Thanks to our announcer Tex Farnsworth; photographer Beth Dikes; timer Kyle Dikes; flag men Syl Burkemper and Justin Williams; and our rodeo clowns Frank G. and Rene Mosqueda. boysville online Learn more about Boysville and our mission at www.boysvilletexas.org. Baby chicks require lots of food, water and warmth until they become fully feathered and can regulate body temperature on their own. Constant daily care is required and it is important to keep them on a regular schedule. It is just too bad they have to grow up and stop being so cute. january jam #2 Our annual goat show that allows us to participate against Travis County CAPITAL 4-H was another great success. Boysville residents walked away with the Grand Champion of the show and the Goat Showmanship award. Thanks to our sponsors, St. Hedwig Feed and Supply and CAPITAL 4-H for proving prizes and awards. Special thanks go to Diana and Steve Garza for all their assistance. campus news cws cleans up CWS Builds a Bridge between community and business On February 21, 2006, approximately 200 volunteers arrived at the Boysville campus to do a massive two-hour spruce-up of the campus. 8 CWS Capital Partners LLC. manage various apartment homes throughout Texas, Colorado, California and North Carolina. The company, founded by Steven Sherwood, began B.R.I.D.G.E. as a way for his company to give back to the community. According to Leslie Gonzalez, area B.R.I.D.G.E. captain, Sherwood wanted to let the community know they care. B.R.I.D.G.E. stands for Breaking down barriers, Respect for others, Investing our resources, Dedication to the community, Giving ourselves, and Everyone makes a difference. Each year, CWS holds annual meetings for its managers and property directors. During the three-day meeting, a two-hour time-out is scheduled and these volunteers perform a community service in the host city of the meeting. This year, Boysville was selected to receive a much needed makeover by CWS. Led by area coaches Leslie Gonzalez, Theresa Shields and Becky Johnson, the volunteers painted bedrooms in five cottages, sanded and stained bathroom counters, planted trees and jasmine, re-mulched the playground, painted the recreation room and cleaned the carpet in the library and chapel. All of this within a two-hour timeframe! Afterwards, the volunteers enjoyed an ice cream party with the children of Boysville. “The event was very rewarding,” said Gonzalez. “Often, we do not get to meet the people who benefit from our projects. It was nice to meet the children and have ice cream with them.” Many of the volunteers came away from Boysville amazed at the children’s home and the services it provides to children, she said. “Even our out-of-town associates were amazed. This is a home with a heart.” houseparents By Leequaysha Here where I’m at, the houseparents are cool but I don’t know what to do. It seems funny not to have my real parents, And strange, but I know I’ll get through. Some of the people or houseparents are nice and some are so mean But I can try my best to ignore it But I can’t so I just get an attitude With the houseparents. But now it seems to me that I’m getting better at it because I stand proud and say, Hey, I live in Boysville. boysville today carnival fun! river parade Texas Cavaliers River Parade Special thanks to El Pollo Loco who provided lunch for our children, staff and volunteers! Even the mascot had a great time at the carnival! Several Boysville residents participated in the Texas Cavaliers River Parade. This year, each boat had a theme and the Boysville Theme was Saturday Morning Cartoons. Tiffany, (Scooby Doo), Cindy (Penny, Inspector Gadget’s sidekick), Vincent, (Shaggy) and Jake, (Captain Planet) along with case manager, Shelly Miller (Gaia, Spirit of the Earth) and Director of Community Relations, Beth Reinhardt (Daphne) performed songs from Captain Planet, Inspector Gadget and Scooby Doo cartoons while cruising down the river. Boysville would like to thank the many generous individuals and companies who sponsored this event and gave their time to create a day of fun for the children of Boysville. Manny Ruiz and the Autobahns compiled the music and performed with the Boysville residents on the barge. On April 1, Boysville children enjoyed a day of carnival rides and games on the Boysville Campus! Volunteers from Reagan High School, The Optimist Clubs of San Antonio and Valero Energy Corporation, as well as many individuals from San Antonio, spent the afternoon painting faces, scooping out endless snow cones and running game booths such as the balloon pop, ring toss and more. boysville today memorials Tribute(s) for Jerry Aaron Tribute(s) for Keith Bolton Tribute(s) for Carmeleta W.
