Bolton Lakes (3 Ressers Walk)
Grade 4 – Moderate 8 miles 3½ hours
On this walk the going is easy with little climbing.
Leaving the car park, we follow the Witton
Weavers Way to the weir at the western end of
Turton & Entwistle Reservoir, then take a path
past Fox Hill along the northern shore, before
joining the Weavers Way once more. We stay on
the Way which meanders along the full length of
the eastern edge of Wayoh Reservoir & goes
through Turton Bottoms to the bridge at
Jumbles Reservoir. Still following the Way, we
cross the bridge & head north into open country
passing Clough House Farm en route back to our
starting point.
Bring liquid refreshments and some food.
Waterproofs and walking boots are essential. A
walking pole would also be handy.
After the walk we’ll have an optional meal at the
Chetham Arm’s pub in Chapeltown.

Stonehenge (of the north) from Monyash
Grade 4, Moderate, 6 miles & 3.5 hours
Rated as moderate though I’m on the level when
I say much of this walk is on the level. Hope that
doesn’t leave you feeling flat. But we're heading
for Arbor Low stone circle, that should give you a
lift.
'Arbor Low is the finest Stone Age 'henge'
monument in the North of England, a site of
8
unique archaeological and cultural interest' (not
my words). It's impressive; though all the stones
are now lying flat - it's that word again.
It dates from about 2500 BC.
Route:
The walk starts from the attractive village of
Monyash, from where we proceed for a few
hundred metres to the head of Lathkill Dale. (WC
facilities here). Lathkill is one of the prettiest
dales in the Peaks; that's a pity because we will
leave it after about a mile, and head up Cales
Dale towards Arbor Low. We then find our way
through open farmland to the ancient site itself.
There is a coctlleion tin outside the adjacent
farm - so please bring some change.
Our return will be via a different route, pretty in
its own way, though, of course, not as pretty as
Lathkill Dale. Never mind.

Reading Group Meeting
This month’s read is
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist
By Robert Tressell
The story follows the misfortunes of a group of
painters and decorators in the south of
Edwardian England. They are poor, they are
unhappy, they are exploited and they ironically
cling tightly to their right to remain in this state.
The overarching questions posed in the book are
-what are the causes of poverty, why do those
oppressed willingly accept the values of the
oppressors and why do they not rise up in revolt
and take issue with the system that
disadvantages them?
Tressell himself was a workman and his richly
detailed account of working class life in
Edwardian England is drawn from first hand
experience.
A book that makes powerful and moving reading.

If you like Bluegrass music you are in for a treat.
The summer of 2012 saw The Jaywalkers – BBC
Young Folk Award finalists 2009 – cement their
place as one of the most exciting, virtuosic and
entertaining young bands working on the British
folk scene. June 4th saw the eagerly awaited
release of their 2nd album – Early for a Thursday
– but their busy summer was already well under
way, with the band performing at over 24
festivals, from the farthest reaches of the A9 in
North Scotland to the Southern tip of Swanage
and an Eastern-most point of Broadstairs (and
many places in-between). There was just enough
time to fit in a quick trip to Europe, where the
11
band were placed 3rd at the European World of
Bluegrass in Holland (making them the 3rd best
Bluegrass band in Europe…or, that’s how we say it
anyway).

Favourite Foreign Films Evening
You are invited to join me in my sitting room to
watch a foreign film – with English subtitles – and
discuss.
Another Spanish film. This one is dramatic and
very thought-provoking, while being also a very
good evening’s viewing.
“Tambien la lluvia” (“Even the Rain”)
A Spanish film from 2010 by Icíar Bollaín,
The film is about Mexican director Sebastián (Gael García Bernal)
and executive producer Costa (Luis Tosar) who travel to Bolivia to
shoot a film depicting Christopher Columbus’s conquest. Sebastián
and Costa unexpectedly land themselves in a moral crisis when
they and their crew arrive at Cochabamba, Bolivia, during the
intensifying 2000 Cochabamba protests, which their key native
actor Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri) persistently leads.
This story within a story is based on true facts. It reveals the
story of the “water wars”, the indigenous protests against the
privatization of their water supply by multinationals, and parallels
the Spanish conquest and exploitation of the New World.
Interesting stuff! Brilliantly filmed.
Tea/coffee/biscuits supplied. (50p donation
appreciated)

Chesham & Cheesden Valley Vantage Points
Bury.
Grade 3 moderate 5 miles.
‘The Forgotten Valley’ is how Bury History
Society’s booklet describes the Cheesden Valley,
& it is hidden away beyond the M66, the deep
clough sees few visitors yet once its 14 cotton
mills provided work for over 2000 people.
Nearby by Chesham was the home of several
wealthy cotton masters. Their mansions in the
woods are now gone but the stately beeches and
turkey oaks remain.
If you came on my ‘Cheesden Valley Curves’ walk
in August 2013, this is the walk next door with
only a short overlap. The car park is free .
Please car share where possible as the Pub car
park fills up fast.
Waterproofs, walking shoes/boots are required
especially after rain as the ground may be boggy
in patches and a ‘head for heights’ is needed as
the path is briefly high & narrow.
Bring some nibbles & drink to put you on as we’re
having a pub lunch afterwards nearby at ‘The
Swan & Cemetery’ an excellent refurbished pub
which is on the homeward bound drive. See
‘swanandcemetary.co.uk’ for details.

“April Fool's Day Walk
- The Incredibly Serious Tour”
Led by Jonathan Schofield (pub walk fame!)
Cost £8
Jonathan’s description of walk:
“There will be no fun on this tour, no laughing and
being silly. It's time to forget all the childish
behaviour associated with this incredibly
important day.
The guide guarantees to fail to refer to the most
farcical, ridiculous, stupid, side-splittingly funny
episodes and stories of Manchester life. There
will be no visits to places of public amusement, no
ridiculous prizes given away.
There will be no fun.
By order.
16
The tour will be the very model of the perfect
old-fashioned tour, because LIFE IS SERIOUS
and we must maintain STRAIGHT FACES AT ALL
TIMES.*
Right you've been told.
*The guide reserves the right to deviate from the description
above.
What is guaranteed is a 6pm start on
Wednesday 1 April, a price of £8 and a
meeting point outside Marks & Spencer on
Market Street.”

This month’s read is
The Invention of Wings
By Sue Monk Kidd
This is a story about freedom, the thing so
abstract when you have it, and so real when
you're born without and crave for it.
The novel starts in Charleston at the beginning
of the 19th century when the reader will meet
Sarah, a girl born into a wealthy and influential
family, and whose father is a judge on South
Carolina's court. On Sarah's eleventh birthday,
she will receive a gift from her father, her own
waiting maid named Helpful, whose real name is
Hetty and who is burdened with slavery life.
When the two girls meet there begins a
relationship that will eventually become anything
but what her father had in mind when he gave
Sarah her maid.

“Entertaining Angels” by Richard Evertt
Cost: £9
As a vicar's wife, Grace has spent a lifetime on

her husband Bardolph, she is enjoying the newfound freedom to do and say exactly as she
pleases. But the return of her eccentric
missionary sister Ruth, together with some
disturbing revelations from the past, forces
Grace to confront the truth of her marriage.
With sharp-edged comedy and probing wit, this
absorbing play asks whether God can be trusted
to do anything right at all, or is the whole thing a
divine exercise in trial and error?
