Letter from the President
Dear Members,
I hope everyone was able to spend time
with family and friends over the holidays.
Our first meeting is January 8th. Because
the meeting comes so early in the month
and so close to the holidays, be sure you
don’t miss it.
Dr. Deb Zoran will be the speaker for our
first meeting. It has been several years
since she has spoken at HCVMA and I’m
excited to have her back. Her topic will
be “The Vomiting Cat”. January is also
the designated meeting that you can bring
a colleague as a guest. If you have a colleague that has not been a part of
HCVMA, please invite them. For this
one meeting only we will wave our usual
evening CE fee of $35. Our sponsor for
this meeting is Antech. Antech has been
a regular sponsor for many years. Without our sponsors, HCVMA could not offer the quality CE that we do and still
keep our dues so reasonable. Please stop
by the Antech table and thank them for
their support.
I would like to welcome our new board
members. Dr. Sara Kaplan-Stein will be
serving as secretary this year. Dr. Dipa
P. Brahmbhatt and Dr. Rachel Walsh are
our two new directors. Thank you for
volunteering your time and talents.
For those of you who don’t know me, I
wanted to offer you a little background
information. I am a native Texan. I
moved to Houston when I was 12. I am a
1981 Texas A&M graduate and I was
fortunate to move back to my hometown
after graduation. After 4 years as an
associate, I started my own practice. I
have been an HCVMA member since
graduation and have really valued the
great CE and camaraderie I have experienced over the years. Hopefully this
year will be no exception. I look forward to seeing you January 8th.
Respectfully submitted,
Lenette Deschamps, DVM

RABIES EXAMS – FIRST AND FINAL EXAM
When a dog, cat or ferret bites a human, the animal must be quarantined for 10 days (240 hours form the time of the bite), regardless of vaccination status. Police service dogs are exempt from quarantine requirements in
Texas. The local rabies control authority will decide, depending on the situation, whether the animal will be allowed home quarantine (HQ) or required to
be in clinic quarantine (CQ).
The quarantined animal must be observed for clinical signs of rabies,
by a licensed veterinarian, on the first and last day of quarantine period and
the medical records should indicate such. An animal in CQ, must be observed by the clinic staff twice daily for any abnormal clinical signs. Any
abnormalities should be immediately reported to the attending veterinarian
and documented in the medical records. In addition, the animal should not be
vaccinated during the quarantine period. Once the quarantine period is over,
any animal NOT current on its rabies vaccine, must be vaccinated for rabies
before it is released back to the owner. For those pets residing in unincorporated Harris County, please remind the owner that all dogs and cats must be
licensed by the county. Licensing a pet is easy and can be done online, in person at HCPHES – VPH or by mail: http://www.hcphes.org/
