In Memoriam: Dr. Walter Steiger Dr. Walter Steiger was a Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. During his 30-year career at Manoa, he began an astronomy program and developed a solar observatory at Makapu'u Point on O'ahu, which later was supplanted by one on Haleakala, Maui. On Haleakala, he conducted studies of the airglow and http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs065/1101601435348/archive/1104463799089.html[2/16/2011 4:06:28 PM] February 2011 News from 'Imiloa Astronomy Center Cynthia & Alex Clarke Richard & Barbara Darling Carol & Gregory Dencker Derrik & Christine Diego David Fujimoto Valerie Grab & Nicholas Manoukis Matthew Hare & Dr. Kerry Shaw Scott Koontz & Douglas Wayman James & Debra Kraus Lucy & Donald Moody Brian & Winnifred Morton Leah K. After an early retirement in 1980, he entered a new form of teaching from the Bishop Museum Planetarium. During this period he also served for four years on the UH Board of Regents. In 1987, looking for another new challenge, he was offered the opportunity to work on Maunakea as Site Manager for the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. After retirement from CSO, he was back to his first love, teaching physics, this time at UH Hilo, as Adjunct Professor. Dr. Walter Steiger Dr. Steiger also served as Interim Director of Maunakea Astronomy Education Center, what would later become known as 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i, from 20032004, where he helped develop the philosophy and structure of the exhibits and the planetarium. Until his passing on Sunday, February 6, 2011, Dr. Steiger continued to talk and write about the origins of astronomy in Hawai'i. Read Hawai'i Tribune-Herald "Colleagues Recall Star of Hawai'i Astronomy" article. Walter Steiger Tribute Page: http://wsteiger.wordpress.com/2011/02/08/walter-steiger/ On behalf of Dr. Steiger's family, a memorial service will take place on Saturday the 12th of February 2011 at the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center from 5pm. Dr. Steiger's family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, people donate to the Dr. Walter and Betty Steiger Scholarship Fund at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo or to the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i. Maunakea Skies February 19 at 7pm Science Synergies: A Tale of Two Telescopes The observatories on Mauna Kea come in many sizes and have many different astronomical purposes. Increasingly, observations made with the smaller telescopes are being used to identify objects of extreme astrophysical interest which must be studied in detail with the larger observatories. Having just moved from one telescope (UKIRT) to another (Gemini), Dr. Adamson has seen both ends of one of the most productive such partnerships. In this talk, he will show some of the best examples of the scientific productivity which happens when two http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs065/1101601435348/archive/1104463799089.html[2/16/2011 4:06:28 PM] February 2011 News from 'Imiloa Astronomy Center John McCollum Kathleen McGraw Antonette Merino Nancy Molitor Erin Nahuina Bernadette Nakano Linda Nelson Gabriela Niedermann Jane Petersen Karen Sacilowski Judith San Filippo Eugene Schmitz JoDee Schumer Sherrie Ann Straslicka-Walker Greer Sucke Stephen Sugar Pierre Van Nerom Robert Ware Charles Webster, Jr. Cynthia Wise Renewed Family Members Sue Asano & Lena Lee Amy & Ernie Bautista Dr. Daniel Brown & Dr. Yee-Kwan Brown Lisa Canale & Alex Wood Dr. Scott Daniels & Jessica Daniels William & Carole Darby Kenneth Fine & Anita Tavernier Gene & Sarah Gable Raymond Gandy, Jr. & Alida Gandy Jeanette Gilbert & John Broward Michael & Reef Greto Jo-Anna Herkes & The Honorable Robert N. Cost is $5 for Individual, Dual, Kupuna and Family members; $3 for Patron Members, Free for Silver, Gold and Corporate Members, and $8 for non-members. Dr. Andy Adamson is currently the Director of Science and Operations for Gemini Observatory, prior to United Kingdom Infrared Telescope this he served as the (UKIRT) associate director UKIRT from 1998 to 2010. Born in the United Kingdom, Dr. Adamson was a lecturer and computer systems manager at the University of Central Lancashire in the Dr. Adamson northwest of the United Kingdom for ten years, before arriving on the Big Island in 1998. His research focuses on interstellar dust particles - the microscopic motes of silicate and (hydro) carbons which pervade the space between the stars and obscure much of the local Universe from our sight. Navigation Training Workshops 2011 Thanks to a generous $7500 donation from the Alexander & Baldwin Foundation and Matson Navigation, the 5th Annual Wayfinding Skills Workshop will be held in March. The workshop is designed to perpetuate the art of celestial navigation and link science, math, and technology to further advance Polynesian wayfinding. Over the course of three days, workshop attendees participate in academic and immersive exercises in partnership with 'Aha Punana Leo's Honuakai program and the 'Ohana Wa'a. Mahalo to Alexander & Baldwin Foundation and Matson Navigation for their continued support of this program as 'Imiloa works to inspire, excite and engage Hawai'i's next http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs065/1101601435348/archive/1104463799089.html[2/16/2011 4:06:28 PM] February 2011 News from 'Imiloa Astronomy Center Dr. Milton Murasaki & Virginia Stein James & May Nojiri Russell & Aki Oda Miriam & Torae Odani Wayne & Marie Onomura Lynne Park Jean Powers & James Seaquist Bridget & Guy Rapoza Allen Rice & Hokulani Kaikaina Daghild & Erhard Rick Mary Robertson & Kristin Ganley Michael & Phyllis Robinson Sandra & Troy Sato Paul & Kathleen Sears George Sheridan, Jr. Ululani Sherlock & Nani Langridge Julann Sonomura John Swatek & Karen Finneran-Swatek Lillie Tsuchiya & Takako Miura Burt & Amy Tsuchiya Carole & Hardy Tsutsumi Margaret Ushijima Cynthia & Kyle Van Guilder Akira Watanabe Rae Welsh & Stephen Welsh Paul & Virginia Whitman Ava Williams Jeanne & James Yagi Gary Yoshiyama Renewed Silver Members Jonathan & Patricia Benjamin Dr. Murray Chapman & Linley Chapman Hideo & Emi Gushiken Eugene & Julia Tao Renewed Gold Members Lin-Jun & Charlotte Cheng Ahia Dye & Celeste Ha'o Dr. Marlene Hapai & Archie Hapai, III Robert Masuda & Jane Sherwood, RN Mahalo for your wonderful support! generation of wayfinders.
