Thermopolis PRCA Rodeo results
by Cindy Glasson
The 2015 Thermopolis Cowboy Rendezvous PRCA Rodeo had a great turnout last
weekend, bringing visitors and cowboys
from not only the U.S. but several distant
countries as well.
Visitors were treated to a night of rodeo action on Friday with bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle
bronc riding, tie down roping, barrel racing and bull riding, along with a salute to
Wyoming’s 125th birthday.
Saturday night was “Tough Enough
to Wear Pink” night and the latest inductees into the Wyoming Cowboy Hall
of Fame, Denny Jones and Ed and Peggy
Shaffer were honored part way through
the evening.
Along with the talented cowboys from
Wyoming, there were riders and ropers
from Colorado, Alaska, Oklahoma, Nevada, California, Louisiana, Texas, Iowa
and Montana to thrill the crowds both
evenings.
Kids were encouraged to participate in

night’s PRCA Rodeo performance.
the calf scramble both Friday and Saturday night with dozens of youngsters tearing across the arena after the ribbon tied
to the calf’s tail.
Barrelman Extraordinaire, Matt Tarr,
kept the crowds entertained between riders and events with hilarious banter back
and forth with the rodeo announcer, Tim
Fuller.
Three locals participated in the PRCA
Rodeo on Saturday night, Bobbi Zupan in
barrel racing and Hawk Whitt and Justin
Ellis in bull riding.
While the trio had a great time participating, unfortunately a penalty kept Zupan from placing and neither Whitt nor
Ellis managed to make the eight-second
mark on their bulls.
All-around cowboy honors and an $851
purse went to Bray Huxtable who participated in steer wrestling and team roping.
Craig Wisehart and Weston Garrett tied
for first in bareback riding, taking home
$1,036 each.
Steer wrestler Tait Kvistad won $1,111
for his first place finish, followed by
Payden McIntyre in second place and Bray
Huxtable in third.
Travis Bounds and Joe Roderic took top
honors and $987 each for team roping. Second place team included Cody Callaway
and Justin Hammerich, with Joe Beaver
and McCoy Profili finishing third.
In saddle bronc, Whit Peterson took
home a $993 purse for first place with
Brady Dinwoodie, Josh Griggs and Colin
Stalley all tying for second.
Josh Peek pulled down $1,254 for first
in tie-down roping. Don Coffell placed second and Randall Carlisle, third.
Dianne Bath placed first in barrel racing with a take home of $920. She was followed by Terri Kaye Kirkland in second
and Jennifer Lewis in third.
Bull rider Drew Flynn took first, taking home $1,070. Brian Larson and Jacob Smith finished second and third respectively.
In all, nearly $29,000 was paid out to
the participants over the weekend.

National speech and debate highlights
by Cindy Glasson
Darren Leonhardt and Logan
Kay competed at the National
Speech and Debate tournament
in Dallas, Texas last week as the
grand finale to their 2015 speech
season.
Leonhardt competed in World
Schools Debate, a five-person
team event that brought competitors from Korea, Mexico, Saipan,
China and other countries for the
week-long event.
The team Leonhardt was part
of consisted of Wyoming debaters from Jackson, Greybull and
Green River, all members of the
Wind River District.
The team posted three wins
and three losses in the newly
added national event, quite an
accomplishment as the team
had not met face to face until 2
p.m. on Sunday with competition
beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday
morning.
All the cases and preparation
had been done via Skype with the
team getting together on their
computers each evening in their
different towns.
“This group of young people
were simply amazing,” coach Cindy Glasson said. “To know they
hadn’t even worked together as a
group until 18 hours before their
first match-up and had a threethree run shows a lot of intelligence and determination.”
Once the debaters were out
of the running, Leonhardt went
on to do a supplemental event,
expository. He managed to get
through two performances before being eliminated in supplementals.
Logan Kay ended his speech
career on a high note at Nationals, moving through six rounds
of humorous interpretation before elimination.
Kay was ranked in the top 50
percent of the 246 humor competitors, missing the “Top 60” by
just 11 points.
“He set a goal for himself when
he knew he’d qualified for Nationals,” Glasson said. “He wanted to
get one first place ranking from
a judge while he was there and
he certainly managed to do that.
“It was a great way for him to
finish off his senior year.”
Kay also competed in a supplemental event, storytelling.
The event is based on a children’s book of their choice and
competitors must perform as if
they are telling the story to a
group of children.
Kay made it through two
rounds as well before being eliminated.
“As a whole, the Wyoming contingent did well at Nationals,”
Glasson said. “Students from all
over the state qualify in the various events and we all travel separately, but once we’re at the venue, the Wyoming kids are fiercely
behind each other.
“It’s wonderful to see them run
into each other in the hallways
and ask each other how they’re
doing in rounds or how their last
debate went. Sure, in Wyoming
we’re competing against each
other every weekend, but once
they’re at Nationals they’re truly
competing together as a state.”
