They’re the big-time wrestling of Rock ‘n’ Roll, mixed with a bit of “Spinal Tap” the movie, circus tricks, comic book characters, and in-yourface Rock that blended beautifully like a tasty New Orleans gumbo. Faces painted, exploding pyrotechnics, high flying flames, huge high-heeled shoes, fire-breathing, high-rise lifters, zip lines, and dripping blood (looked real), accompanied original members Gene Simmons on bass and vocals and Paul Stanley on lead vocals and guitar – along with Eric Singer on drums and Tommy Thayer on lead guitar as the new touring members. The excited crowd, many with their faces painted, cheered as the big KISS lettering flashed on stage. “Hotter than Hell,” “Let Me Go Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “Rock and Roll All Nite,” “Shout It Outloud,” “I Was Made for Lovin You,” “Lick It Up,” “Detroit Rock City” and “Love Gun” were highlights to the very entertaining show. Stanley was on a zip line that went across the crowd to the back of the arena on to a small stage, to perform to that section of fans. Simmons tongued blood drippings – always a classic! This is show biz, baby. They know how to entertain! Simmons with his long tongue, posed for me many times…. he loves the camera! The confetti machine was on max, like a Tahoe snow storm. The high risers took the boys as high as the top of the stage as they performed. Flames exploded out of the lead’s guitar many times during the solo. KISS still knows how to entertain all ages with a recipe that started in the mid-70s and continues today that’s timeless and exciting. Harveys has The Improv with host Howie Nave (from KRLT 93.9) and new comics each week who are very funny for all to laugh. The Hard Rock is always a good time with food and drinks and music. They had a benefit for the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center Breast Fund with L.A. band Intercept. Check out this month’s benefit there – always a fun time for good causes. On Fridays and Saturdays at the Tahoe Live Stage inside Harveys next to the Hard Rock, is live music to enjoy. Cabo Wabo, Sammy Hagar’s place, has live entertainment every night. Tahoe’s Cash Only Band plays every Tuesday. Horizon had their classic car show with cool cars you wished you owned. Carnival Cabaret is back at the Horizon’s Cabaret. The men, the make-up, the dresses – a unique variety show that’s fun and entertaining to see. They were here for four years, and now they’re back. One name impersonation performances include Dolly, Cher, Diana, Barbra, Reba, Bette, and Prince, with the one and only James “Gypsy” Haake as the star and comic relief. His Don Rickles style blends well with his excellent improv with audience members. Haake has performed on Broadway, “La Cage” and Mel Brooks’s “To Be or Not To Be” movie, not to mention many TV shows. His outfit changes throughout the whole show are remarkable as are the talented dancers. Catch this fun show. MontBleu had the New Orleans first family of funk, The Neville Brothers. Aaron, Art, Charles and Cyril and their hot band sounded so cool and spiritual. My brother, Steve, and my dad, Phil, were all smiles as we enjoyed the show. Pablo Cruise concluded the free outdoor shows at Common Beach in Tahoe City where you can have lots of fun every Sunday from July through the first week in September. They were the first band I photo-shot in 1977 at Kirkwood. Wow – time flies when you’re having fun! Catch Halloween parties with the 30th Annual Freaker Ball at MontBleu, Vex Nightclub at Harrah’s, Cabo Wabo at Harveys, Whiskey Dick’s, The Tudor Pub, Crystal Bay Casino, and Bar 24. It will be a freakin’ good time for all. Next month will be our classic Halloween Pictorial issue. Harrah’s has Mickey Thomas and Starship Oct. 11, Colin Quinn Oct. 18, The Smothers Brothers Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, Blue Oyster Cult Nov. 8, José Feliciano Nov. 15. Now that’s a variety of talent to check out. Vex Nightclub inside Harrah’s has Go-Go Dancers, sexy topless dancers, high-aerial stunts that are very impressive, cool DJ music, and big smiles from all who attend. BLU and Opal Nightclub at MontBleu also creates a great time with many themes and drink specials. The 38th Annual Food & Wine Tasting presented by Soroptimist International is Nov. 7, always a fun time for all. Bar 24 inside Bill’s has Battle of the Bands on Thursday nights that are a lot of fun to see. Zephyr Cove Resort had many volleyball tournaments and has boat cruises, the Sunset Bar & Grill and a cool beach. And remember, “Keep the Faith.” Scientifically of Hypothetically!! TRPA needs to be a little more cautious in the way they spend our money considering they are a dual state funded appointed political organization with no common sense or oversight. Take for example BMP’s which stands for Best Management Practices which in it’s own right is an oxymoron. I mean why make the individual homeowner do all these BMP’s which prevent us from utilizing our property to it’s fullest when the State, Conservancy, County and City are building them anyway. I look at all the huge BMP projects going on around the area and really have to wonder if my little rocks are going to matter that much. If we took some of the crappy areas, which we have done in the past, and put in major BMP’s to filter sediment and then MAINTAINED them homeowners could then put in that deck or have a bigger driveway so a car can at least fit on it. Bigger driveway’s means your not parking on the dirt and causing more erosion. I believe in the house footprint max at 30% to prevent these oversized houses but preventing decks and driveways just plain mean. The TRPA has never ever proven scientifically or hypothetically (How about those ten dollar words?) that BMP’s work. Transporation is another area where the TRPA has sqandered our tax dollars or perhaps wasted is a better word. About 5 years ago the TRPA got a grant from the Feds for about $185K for some goofy transportation idea in the stateline or Camp Rich area involving two beautifully restored 1930 something cars and two pull behind trailers of which one was ADA compliant. They were stored at Harveys and only moved once and that was last week where they were towed to the ATM Transit garage in the city. The only reason they were moved is Harveys didn’t want them there when the Feds come sniffing around wondering where the money went and why they have sat for five years. If anyone is thinking I am bullshitting go by the garage and check them out and call the TRPA and ask them. I notice this particular item didn’t come up when they gave the head of TRPA a merit raise. Kinda like the bonus Wall street executives get when they screw the shareholders, stockholders, mom & pop and get away with it. Last Minute Addition: As soon as they hit Ca the CHP deemed the trailers were illegal for highway use and they could not be legally used for transporting anything. Great. I drive through the ‘Y’ everyday and I think the new or should I say only wider lanes will work as long as the Subway truck doesn’t keep parking in the no parking zone everyday to advertise his shop. I thought the city banned that but he seems to get away with it on a daily basis. I wonder if that is due to the fact that his truck is registered in Nevada and they run the city anyway. Last month I touched on Local Shopping and since then several business’s have shut down due directly to non-local shopping. It will only get worse. Ford had an area of responsibility which covered the lake and partway to Pville in which 58 cars and trucks were sold. Our local Ford only sold 14 of those, all the rest were bought off the hill, you can’t survive on 14 sales in 3 months. I have dealt with Ford up here and I know their prices were the same as everyone else and they would match anyone. The same goes for the other stores and shops but it all boils down to one thing, GAS. Gas is 50 cents cheaper off the hill and most of us will go to great lengths to save a buck, especially in todays economy. We are also spur of the moment shoppers and what the hell, while were here let’s do other shopping while were at it. Gas comes down we stay at home. Last Minute Addition: TRPA has had all the new BLU GO bus signs done off the hill and they look great from that guys house, unfortunate we have to look at them up here cuz they are a joke. I tried to watch the Vice Presidential debates but when I realized there wasn’t going to be a Wardrobe Malfuntion I lost interest. There is more write ups and articles in the Trib Sports section about out of area happenings than there are about local teams and athletes. Show a little pride in our town and assign a reporter to follow local sports like we used to have in the past. I remember when we had our own seperate section with nothing but local sports. I know the local sponsors, many of whom advertise in your paper, would like to see their names advertised as sponsors. You always get the same group of local business’’s sponsoring teams and that is the great thing about this town. We still have a lot of longtime locals who continue to support our town despite all the problems. Still bitching and harping about needing a full time Mayor. T at the Deli, it will never happen. Danger, Ya still out there? Later, Skibum. As Usual: [email protected] The Dollyrots - Hard Rock Cafe - Oct. 30 In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hard Rock Cafe Lake Tahoe will rock out for the fight against breast cancer. Proceeds* from the sale of special limited edition 2008 Hard Rock Pinktober merchandise will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Howie Nave COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN I know this column is all about who is coming up here comedy-wise to the mountain but after just returning from Kuwait and Iraq wanted to jot down a few brief observations and reflections if you will about performing for the military overseas okay? First off it was more than an honor to even be asked to be part of a comedy tour for the troops and second the shows were secondary when compared with the meet & greet portion after the show. That was to me by far the most rewarding hearing the stories from the soldiers how they looked forward to returning home. There were so many instances I don’t have the space here now to tell you about it but will say that performing in the Middle East was the most rewarding experience ever having all branches of the military as out audience. No one is allowed to drink in both Kuwait and Iraq so when you couple that with the fact that everyone was carrying M4s or M16s there was never a heckler so that was a bonus. The heat was miserable and when it’s 90 degrees at 5am you kind of get an indicator on how hot the rst of the day will be. All of Kuwait smelled like oil. Literally! The moment you exit the Kuwait Airport it smells of refineries and the scary part is that those who picked us up were oblivious to that smell because they have been over there so long. After spending two weeks in both Kuwait and mostly Iraq I no longer want to see the color tan anymore as that was pretty much the color of everything especially in Kuwait. There was some green mostly from those places along the Tigris River in Iraq but 90% pretty much baron and sandy as hell. I brought over with me both letters from the Sheffif’s Dept. and from Mayor Mike Webber both pretty saying the same thing: that we are thinking of you all and very proud for what it is you are doing for our country. I also brought over with me letters from school children that I delivered to one of the FOBs (Forward Operating Base) and the soldiers said they would post the student’s letters and drawings and also write them back from Iraq. I also brought over ten pounds of Starbucks coffee courtesy of GM Robert Hernandez from the Tahoe City location and dropped off the bags at those smaller FOBs that were running low on coffee so it was cool I could pack all of that with me to bring overseas. At some point when I have finished downloading all of the images I took (both from digital and 35mm) would like to share with anyone who might be interested. Okay, and now it’s time to let you know about some of my favorite acts coming up here. Appearing here October 7th through the 12th are comedians John Caponera and Kenny Bob Davis. Both are excellent acts and really could be billed as a co-headlining show that week. Caponera brings with him a positive feel to his shows every time and for that I have to admit I get a little cynical. He is pretty much always in an upbeat mood and it comes across on stage. Yes, I can learn from ‘Cap’ and try to make every show a better one like he does so well. The Chicago native has one of those faces that looks very familiar yet you just can’t place where you’ve seen it. His everyman persona lends itself very useful not just on the big screen but also on stage as you will witness. I like to tease him because he got his first break doing a local Chicago version the Gong Ahow that netted him $500.00 as the winner and realized he should give this comedy thing a try. He sure did. Howell J. Malham Jr. of The Chicago Tribune writes: “Every so often, the kingdom of comedy is graced with a gifted, naturally refined performer who can effectively demonstrate the transcendental powers of the medium while making it look deceptively easy.” He did a great stint in Las Vegas and Michael Paskevich of The Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote, “Unafraid of letting a room grow quiet, Caponera sets his own intentionally erratic pace, pausing to perfection to complement his oddly timed but rewarding comic insights. The jokes are further bolstered by his talent for faciaaal gestures that range from goofy to arrogant, making Caponera arguably the hottest club headliner going at present.” Kenny Bob Davis has been a fixture performing up here long before there was a regular comedy club anywhere up here at the basin. Kenny’s a very affable guy and when people ask what is his comedy is like it would be a little like if you took a polish version of Jackie Gleason and the biting country charm of Will Rogers mixed with Roy Clark’s musical warmth and the energy of General Patton all rolled into one. That almost describes Kenny Bob Davis. To his audiences he is an “Everyman.” To the entertainment industry Kenny’s quite unique and special. He started his career in show business as a guitar playing folk-singer in the sixties. It was within this atmosphere that he developed his heightened sense of audience rapport and comedic interplay throwing out some humorous material between his songs. Soon after people started coming for the comedy in addition to the music. Come on down and see why won’t you? Coming here October 14th through the 19th is Jeremy Hotz. In addition to his stand up Jeremy has shot several television pilots, toured extensively throughout North America and found time to perform at several comedy festivals including the prestigious Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. He still thinks everyone he works with gets bigger laughs than he does which is just not true. Why the insecurity I ask him? He pretty much summed it up by saying, “You need to fail at everything else so I’ still question my ability.” Having known him for well over ten years you just sort of roll with the insecurities and just know he always kills. Jeremy really is one of the more unique talents we have ever had up here. It’s not just the smart material and insights but also the delivery he has. Even that sounds neurotic. Oh sure we all are sometimes in this line of work but Jeremy has it down to a science. With him is comedian Jeff Burghart and the last time he was over five years ago. Wow. I have to tell you right up front that if you start to engage Jeff in ANY conversation it will wind up being a funny one all of the time. He never seems to rest when it comes to the comedy of everything. He is without a doubt one of the best voice impressionists working today bar none. And yes, if you do talk to him he will answer you in just about every voice except his own! He doesn’t have voices just in his head but actual characters that apparently need to come out from time to time. Good thing that he is in the field of comedy or else they probably would have locked him up a long time ago. Other favs include Kivi Rogers and Ronnie Schell the week of October 21st through the 26th and of course Halloween is happening which is my favorite holiday especially up here in Tahoe. Looking forward to seeing everyone out for that night and hope you have a great October too. ‘The Buzz’ - Harrah's - Harveys October is the time for fall fun at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. Starship starring Mickey Thomas, returns to the South Shore on October 11. Starship took mainstream pop rock by storm in the early ‘80s with their hit “We Built This City.” The band quickly followed up with another number one hit “Sara.” The hilarious Irish-American comedian Colin Quinn will be cracking audiences up with his comedic wit on October 18. On Saturday, October 25 the South Shore Room is in for a special treat with Mimi Chu and Joyce Lee, two extraordinary Asian performers. Rounding out the month are the legendary Smothers Brothers on October 31 and November 1. The Smothers Brothers are considered time-honored legends whose lengthy career has surpassed all other comedy teams in history with 2008 marking their 50th year performing together. October is time for Halloween treats at Harrah’s and Harveys Lake Tahoe. Vex Nightclub will be hosting their annual Halloween Bash on Friday, October 31 with spooky decorations, fun contests and drinks specials. The Cabo Wabo Cantina is throwing a Trick or Treat Party like no other on Friday, October 31! There will be more treats than tricks at this party sponsored by Red Bull, Corona and Jager, with live music all-night long, drink specials and costume contests. Smothers Brothers by Emily Myers James 'Gypsy' Haake Returns to Headline Carnival Cabaret Carnival Cabaret playing at Horizon Casino Resort became Lake Tahoe’s longest running show in history when it closed in January of 2004. Now, almost five years later, the hit show returns for an encore engagement starring James “Gypsy” Haake. This high-energy production combines the best in impersonations, comedy and dance. With an all-new cast bringing their recreations of some of the biggest names in music and show business. Carnival Cabaret will leave you breathless with our country’s most popular divas. James “Gypsy” Haake stars as the popular “mistress” of ceremonies, with performances by five of the country’s top female impersonators, bringing to the stage their tributes to Cher, Bette Midler, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire and many others, backed up by two wickedly talented male dancers. When first in Tahoe, James “Gypsy” Haake, developed a huge following appearing in Horizon’s most successful show and appearing on the covers of ACTION News magazine. Gypsy was discovered by Mel Brooks while hosting the original night club production of La Cage Aux Folles in Hollywood. Gypsy has appeared in many hit films including “To Be Or Not To Be” with Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft, “The Morning After” with Jane Fonda, “Troop Beverly Hills” with Shelley Long and played Uncle Otto on the hit show “Married with Children”. The show also features the talents of Kevin Wiley (Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton and Judy Garland). Kevin is a successful Hollywood make up artist and has been working with the show’s producer for over two years. Wiley has performed all over the country and also has appeared on Bravo’s hit program “Workout”. Patrick Ross (Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler) comes from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Patrick has performed throughout the country as well as Aruba. He was one of the original cast members of Carnival Cabaret in its initial run. Tony Celestine (Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick) comes from Dallas, Texas. Tony was one of the original cast members as well for Carnival Cabaret in its original four year run. Steven Andrade (Cher) comes from New Jersey. Steven has worked in Aruba as well as throughout the United States. Frank Moore (Prince) has performed around the globe. Frank has worked for Legends In Concert in Las Vegas and has traveled to numerous countries as Prince. He is considered the leading Prince tribute artist. Luis Camacho (Choreographer) is the original choreographer of Carnival Cabaret. Luis will spend several weeks in Los Angeles as well as Lake Tahoe working with the cast in developing the show. Luis is often recognized for his work with Madonna and his role in the documentary “Truth or Dare.” Luis was the main influence in the dance craze “Vogue” that inspired one of Madonna’s most memorable songs and music videos (which Luis appears in). Luis spent two years dancing alongside Madonna in music videos, on the stages of the biggest arenas around the world and on the MTV Video Awards. Dan Gore and Paul Blane (Producers) return as showroom producers. Dan was the producing mastermind behind the success of Carnival’s original engagement, taking a three month engagement and turning it into a record-breaking four-year run. Dan has traveled throughout the country seeking the best impersonators for this current production. Dan has produced impersonator shows and booked impersonator talent throughout the world. After Carnival Cabaret closed in 2004, Dan was responsible for booking all of the impersonators in the Sandra Bullock film “Miss Congeniality 2” and has been featured on Bravo’s hit show “Workout” as well as on NBC’s “Today” show. Dan began his career as a George Michael impersonator before turning his talents behind-the-scenes. Two shows will be performed nightly, Tuesday through Sunday, at 8:00 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets are $26.95 plus tax. Minors are welcome to attend the show, but be advised there is some adult humor. For a few reasons. One, Winter is right around the corner. Two, it is beautiful to see all the new people moving to town this time of year. And three, I am coming up on eleven consistent years of bringing live music to Lake Tahoe! It was November 23rd, 1997 when I brought my first show to town and I have been going strong ever since! I started LateNite Productions back then as a hobby and now 11 years later I have made quite a career for myself! Looking around my office, I see memorabilia from all the shows I have done, some of my personal fav’s were Parliament / Funkadelic, Sublime, Black Eyed Peas, De La Soul, Mixmaster Mike, E-40, Too Short, Tommy Lee, Mickey Avalon, Sugarhill Gang, Sir MixA-Lot, Afroman, Method Man, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Sage Francis, Atmosphere and the list goes on. The best part about it is, I couldn’t have done any of it with out the support of all the Tahoe locals! Now October 2008 might possibly be one of the best months yet this year for live music! Maybe I got a little too excited when I was putting all these shows together but I have been working hard and there is defiantly something for everyone so get ready! Let me tell you a little about everything coming up! If you are down for a night of sweaty, foul-mouthed, high energy Punk Rock, then you don’t want to miss Guttermouth with Anti-Panti and 3UpFront at Whiskey Dick’s Saloon on Saturday, October 11th. Last time these guys rocked Tahoe it was sold out so get your tickets early! Last month we tried our first show over at Mo’s Place (inside Super 8) with Reggae Legend, Eek-A-Mouse and it was a huge success. Everyone was excited about the new Venue and was waiting to hear what’s next. Well, here it is - Saturday, October 18th we are bringing you one of the most inspirational and legendary reggae bands of all time - Bob Marley’s Original Wailers! This is for sure a don’t miss show! Just a few days later on Wednesday, October 22nd we are back at Whiskey Dick’s Saloon and we bring you Collie Buddz w/ DJ Pee Wee and guests Rise of the Revolution mixing the sounds of reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, soca and more. Collie Buddz is one of the coolest but yet hottest reggae artists on the charts today. While on the subject of mixing genre’s of music, in my opinion, no one does it better than Sublime. From Punk, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Ska, and Dub, they did it all. We will be paying tribute to them on Saturday, October 25th with the Lou Dog Trio and guests Starving Millionaires and Audiodub. Lou Dog Trio rocked out to a sold out crowd (almost all Ladies) at Whiskey Dicks Saloon earlier this year and they are coming back for more! I love too hook up the locals with free tickets for a show of my choice each month and this is going to be the one. If you see me out and about promoting, make sure to hit me up! Every year I like to do something a little different for Halloween and this just worked out perfect! We will be celebrating a couple days early this year.....on Wednesday, October 29th at Whiskey Dicks Saloon we bring you the Voodoo Halloween Costume Ball featuring Ska-Core legends - Voodoo Glowskulls and guests Knock-Out from Southern California! It wouldn’t be a Voodoo Halloween without Fortune Tellers, Ouija Boards, Crystal Balls, Mayhem, Treats, Ghouls, the Haunted Bar, $1 PBR’s and more! Come dressed to impress (or not) and make it Voodoo or Punk Rock or whatever the hell you want! This party is going to ROCK! Every year the rumors start right about now. Locals definitely has their hopes up high as to how this Winter is going to pan out! It’s not uncommon to hear that “this one is going to be the biggest Winter yet!” All we can do is pray - right?!! Late-Nite Productions is doing it big once again with the Second Annual - Blizzard Pray for Snow Party taking place at one of Tahoe’s Hottest Nightclubs! We will be premiering the Teton Gravity Research Movie “Under the Influence”, we have $1000’s in prizes and giveaways including a resort season pass, snowboards, ski’s and more! The event will be hosted by Pro Skateboarder / Graffiti Artist / MC, Bukue-One and feature a live performance by Del tha Funky Homosapien from Gorillaz / Hieroglyphics / Deltron 3030.
