are unable to afford the registration fees,
the City has established a Youth Scholarship

Ocean Friendly Gardens –
Catch the Wave to Water Quality
The City of Malibu
continues to lead by
example, and in partnership
with West Basin Municipal
Water District, Surfrider
Foundation, and G3 LA
is promoting the “Ocean
Friendly” Gardens program and designing
a demonstration garden for Malibu
Bluffs Park. The Ocean Friendly Gardens
program revolves around conservation,
permeability and retention of rainwater
(also called “stormwater”). It aims to
educate about conserving water and
improving water quality by reducing
runoff, and using native and drought
tolerant plants that create visually
pleasing landscapes. This program is
being emphasized in Malibu where
there are many large landscapes and an
Area of Biological Significance along the
coast. The program includes providing
efficient irrigation systems, access to
rebates for installing “Smart” irrigation, and
workshops, and creating demonstration
gardens that educate and inspire others to
make similar changes on their properties.
You too can lead the effort to save the
ocean while saving money right in your
own backyard! By planting an Ocean
Friendly Garden you allow rainwater to
soak into the ground instead of becoming
runoff that carries pollution to the
ocean. An Ocean Friendly Garden uses
climate appropriate plants, minimizes
chemical use, allows water to sink into
the ground, and holistically maintains a
healthy landscape. Your Ocean Friendly
Garden can live off of rainwater, requiring
little maintenance and water compared
to traditional turf and floral landscapes.
Ocean Friendly Gardens aren’t just friendly
to the ocean – they are friendly to wildlife,
our limited water supply, your wallet,
and to you and your health! Visit
www.oceanfriendlygardens.org or
www.malibucity.org for more information.
New Malibu Pollution Prevention
Hotline Helps the Community to
Protect the Environment
Many people do not
realize that daily
activities from homes
and businesses are
sources of pollution
that when left
on the ground or
dispersed in the air
can add up to a lot of
problems. When rain, irrigation water,
or dirty water runs down the street
or over hillsides, that pollution moves
too – threatening our streams, beaches
and wildlife. Making a difference in the
health of our local waters and keeping
them healthy for the future involves
all of us. As members of the Malibu
community, we are all guardians in the
protection of our unique environment.
“Illicit” or illegal discharges may
include any runoff that isn’t completely
rainwater that flows off of a property
and into a street, drain, stream, or beach.
Common examples of runoff that
could be considered illegal are overirrigation, draining swimming pools,
improper mobile vehicle washing and
surface cleaning, or construction related
activities that result in materials leaving
a job site. These activities can harm the
environment and public health. You can
protect and conserve the environment
and local water quality by reporting
incidents to the City’s Pollution
Prevention Hotline 310.359.8003.
The Hotline is staffed with bilingual
operators 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What Activities Should Be Reported?
• Sewage spills
• “Graywater” or waste wash waters
discharged to the storm drain system*
or local waters
• Unknown material in the storm drain
system or the environment

Aqua Aerobics Class
Seniors Staying Active!
Aqua aerobics is a great workout
for anyone, especially for those
with back or knee problems; it is a
low impact workout in the water,
no experience necessary.
Swimming
is one of
the best
exercises for
seniors. It is
safe and easy
on the body,
allowing
people to move their bodies
without bearing their weight.
Less stress is placed on the joints
and bones when you exercise in
the water. There are also many
benefits to doing water aerobics.
Water is naturally supportive so
there is no need to worry about
falling which may cause an injury.
It is also fantastic at building
strength since water offers natural
resistance; exercises such as
walking in water can burn twice
as many calories an hour than
walking on land.

who will be attentive to the
development of swimmers in and

whether one just wants to learn

Please use the descriptions below
to find the best group level that
suits your child.
Sea Lions
Swimmers in this group will learn
the basics of swimming including
proper body line and streamlining,
kicking, circle swimming, all
four competitive strokes, and
complimentary drills.
Age Group Development
Swimmers must show proficiency
in the four strokes, and will
progress towards being ready for
competition. They will execute
turns for all the strokes, proper
start technique, learn to read the
pace clock, and complete more
complex workouts.
Age Group Competitive
These athletes regularly
compete in swim meets and
are looking to qualify for the
Junior Olympics. They are
developing the ability to swim
with increasingly complex race
strategy while continuing to
master their technique in the
four competitive strokes.
Senior Development
This group is for advanced middle
school swimmers and high
school swimmers to prepare for
competitive senior level meets in
Southern California Swimming
from grand prix to Sectionals
and Nationals. Swimmers are
expected to make a commitment
to swimming and be accountable
for that dedication.
Conditioning Group
This group is designed to prepare
aquatic athletes to excel in their
sports whether they are water
polo players, junior guards or
multisport athletes. Depending
on the need, swimmers will either
participate in Basic Conditioning
