The Ocean Friendly Gardens program revolves around conservation, permeability and retention of rainwater (also called “stormwater”). It aims to educate about conserving water and improving water quality by reducing runoff, and using native and drought tolerant plants that create visually pleasing landscapes. This program is being emphasized in Malibu where there are many large landscapes and an Area of Biological Significance along the coast. The program includes providing efficient irrigation systems, access to rebates for installing “Smart” irrigation, and workshops, and creating demonstration gardens that educate and inspire others to make similar changes on their properties. You too can lead the effort to save the ocean while saving money right in your own backyard! By planting an Ocean Friendly Garden you allow rainwater to soak into the ground instead of becoming runoff that carries pollution to the ocean. An Ocean Friendly Garden uses climate appropriate plants, minimizes chemical use, allows water to sink into the ground, and holistically maintains a healthy landscape. Your Ocean Friendly Garden can live off of rainwater, requiring little maintenance and water compared to traditional turf and floral landscapes. Ocean Friendly Gardens aren’t just friendly to the ocean – they are friendly to wildlife, our limited water supply, your wallet, and to you and your health! Visit www.oceanfriendlygardens.org or www.malibucity.org for more information. New Malibu Pollution Prevention Hotline Helps the Community to Protect the Environment Many people do not realize that daily activities from homes and businesses are sources of pollution that when left on the ground or dispersed in the air can add up to a lot of problems. When rain, irrigation water, or dirty water runs down the street or over hillsides, that pollution moves too – threatening our streams, beaches and wildlife. Making a difference in the health of our local waters and keeping them healthy for the future involves all of us. As members of the Malibu community, we are all guardians in the protection of our unique environment. “Illicit” or illegal discharges may include any runoff that isn’t completely rainwater that flows off of a property and into a street, drain, stream, or beach. Common examples of runoff that could be considered illegal are overirrigation, draining swimming pools, improper mobile vehicle washing and surface cleaning, or construction related activities that result in materials leaving a job site. These activities can harm the environment and public health. You can protect and conserve the environment and local water quality by reporting incidents to the City’s Pollution Prevention Hotline 310.359.8003. The Hotline is staffed with bilingual operators 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. What Activities Should Be Reported? • Sewage spills • “Graywater” or waste wash waters discharged to the storm drain system* or local waters • Unknown material in the storm drain system or the environment 2 • City of Malibu Quarterly Newsletter 310.456.2489 Malibu City Hall 23825 Stuart Ranch Road, Malibu,CA 90265 310.456.2489 City Hall Hours Monday – Thursday 7:30am-5:30pm Friday 7:30am-4:30pm City Hall Holidays – Closed – September 3 November 12 November 22 November 23 • Discharge of pollution to streams, lagoons, or the ocean • Water flowing down the street or from a pipe during dry-weather • Dumped or abandoned materials • Construction dirt or debris tracked or blown to the storm drain system, or surface waters • Polluted runoff from businesses, storage areas or leaking dumpsters Report the Following Information: • Location • Source or cause • Type of pollution • Description (details like color, odor, solid, liquid) • Frequency – Is this the first time, or have you seen it before and when? • Where the material is going – Has it reached the street, a storm drain, or water body? • An estimate of flow – Is it like a kitchen faucet, fire hose, or other? • An estimated volume or quantity – Is it like a bath tub, swimming pool, or other? • Your contact information (don’t worry, we’ll keep it confidential) * The Storm drain system includes roads with drainage systems, municipal streets, alleys, catch basins, curbs, gutters, ditches, manmade channels or storm drains. Aqua aerobics is a great workout for anyone, especially for those with back or knee problems; it is a low impact workout in the water, no experience necessary. Swimming is one of the best exercises for seniors. It is safe and easy on the body, allowing people to move their bodies without bearing their weight. Less stress is placed on the joints and bones when you exercise in the water. There are also many benefits to doing water aerobics. Water is naturally supportive so there is no need to worry about falling which may cause an injury. It is also fantastic at building strength since water offers natural resistance; exercises such as walking in water can burn twice as many calories an hour than walking on land.
