His legendary rhythm and blues tunes, including "Ain't that a Shame," had a major impact on the development of rock and roll, earning him over 50 top hits. With his trademark white buck shoes, perfectly combed hair and gleaming smile, Pat and his lovely wife Shirley were and continue to be the very essence of wholesome American values. Pat had his own prime time TV show, starred in memorable movies such as "April Love," and has continued his recording and acting career. Pat is also a dynamic motivational speaker, a prolific author and a conservative political commentator. Send checks to: MRWF P.O. Box 164 Malibu, CA 90265 AND GAME SHOW HOST WINK MARTINDALE Wink Martindale began working as a radio announcer at the age of 17 while attending Memphis State University. His first break into television was in Memphis as the host of "Mars Patrol" and then later with the TV show "Dance Party" where his close friend Elvis Presley stopped in to make a public appearance. Following Presley's sudden death in 1977, Wink aired a nationwide tribute radio special in his honor. In 1957, he recorded the classic "Deck of Cards" and he hosted his first game show in 1965 entitled "What's This Song?" Wink has hosted numerous highly popular game shows ever since, including High Rollers, Tic Tac Dough and Trivial Pursuit. In addition, he was the creator of Bumper Stumpers and he created and hosted Headline Chasers. In June, 2006 Martindale received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His beautiful wife Sandy, a MRWF member, was a former Elvis girlfriend and Hollywood dancer. Plus special guests: KEVIN JAMES, KRLA 870 weeknight talk show host TONY STRICKLAND, candidate for California State Senate ALEX SOTERAS, Chairman of the GOP Central Committee for Malibu President's Message Membership Report Welcome New Members and Sponsors from Alice M. Starr What a treat to see Dennis Prager's Live Radio Program at Pepperdine on April 14. His insights and humor were so refreshing. Dennis interviewed the authors of a fascinating new best seller, Scared to Death, an exposé of flawed evidence for panics and scares such as global warming. The FUNraiser at Dukes on May 18 is going to be sensational - we thank our many generous co-hosts and auction donors. Special guests Pat Boone, Wink Martindale, Kevin James, Tony Strickland and Alex Soteras will offer keen insights about the 2008 elections. Don't miss the silent auction – we have great items. I had the pleasure of attending the CFRW Advocacy Workshop in Sacramento on April 22, where hundreds of Republican Women and high school students from throughout the state gathered. Risario Marin, Secretary of State and Consumer Services, explained why California has such a large budget deficit and how difficult it will be to reduce spending and the deficit with Democrats in control. Assemblyman Ted Gaines gave a pro-business perspective on how we can reduce the budget deficit by using revenue enhancers such as lotto and selling the state insurance fund, thereby not having to increase taxes. State Senator Dave Cox, from the Sacramento area, decried over-taxation and over-regulation of businesses. Assemblyman Doug Malfa, a rice farmer from up north, advocated building dams and lakes to ensure a plentiful water supply for the entire state. Assemblyman Chuck DeVore of Orange County maintained that only nuclear power plants can solve our current energy crisis, and Assemblyman John Benoit from the Riverside area stressed how tough it is to pass law and order or public safety bills with a liberal state assembly. Lastly, we heard from the Hon. Bill Jones, California Chairman of McCain for President. He highlighted McCain's promises to secure our borders, strengthen our defense, hold the line on taxes and appoint judges who will not make up the law. He believes McCain can win California with our help. YES HE CAN! See you on May 18. Division President Dawn Wetzel A triathlon is a competitive event consisting of three parts – swimming, cycling and running. The race requires competitors to have great stamina, endurance and courage to prove that they are the very best achievers. A winning political campaign must do the same. The CFRW So. Division Triathlon consists of: Recruiting new members: You can recruit new MRWF members in your neighborhood or at your local clubs and activities. Show your stamina by inviting a potential new member to our May 18 FUNraiser. Registering Republicans is the endurance phase of the triathlon competition where we never give up on registration. (You can help register new voters at three Malibu fairs this summer and fall as well as at shopping centers, schools and libraries.) Returning Republicans to the White House and state houses is the 3rd and final phase of the triathlon. We must have the courage to ensure that all registered Republicans in our precincts vote either by absentee ballot or on election day. This part of the competition relies on teamwork – together we must convince voters that their vote is critical, that filling out the ballot is their duty and that voting is their unique privilege. APRIL MRWF Luncheon - Highlights Mark Your Calendars! By Lorraine Stalberg May FUNraising Event Sunday, May 18, 6 – 8 pm Dukes of Malibu Packing Party for the Troops Thursday, May 22, 9 am – 12 pm 5810 Filaree Heights at Zuma MRWF Board Meeting Monday, June 2, 11 am 20494 Roca Chica Dr. State Primary New MRWF member Ariana Anderson chats with Dennis Prager Dennis Prager broadcast his popular three-hour radio show live from Pepperdine on April 14. Malibu RWF, Westlake Village RWF and the Pepperdine College Republicans hosted the event. Reacting to comments by Obama, Prager noted that conservatives are generally grateful for what they have and do not feel embittered, regardless of their economic status. After the radio show, he spoke at our luncheon, reflecting upon character, happiness, morality and how "deeds matter more than feelings." JUNE 3, 2008 PRIMARY BALLOT INITIATIVES There are two constitutional initiatives on the June 3 ballot. They are closely related and involve eminent domain, the taking of property for "public use." If both measures win more than 50 percent at the ballot box, the one with the most votes will prevail. Proposition 98 has several components. 1. It prohibits government from taking ownership of property and then transferring it to a private party. 2. It requires government to offer to the original owner of condemned property the right to repurchase property when it is put to substantially different use than was publicly stated. 3. It phases out and prohibits rent control. Existing rent controls would stay in force until a tenant moves out. 4. It prohibits deference to government in property rights cases and defines “just compensation." Proposition 99 also has several components. 1. It prohibits government from using eminent domain to take a single family home or condominium for private use. However, this prohibition does not apply if the owner of the property does not live there, i.e. rental or commercial properties. 2. It creates exceptions for public works or improvement, public health and safety protection, and crime prevention.
