President’s Message
As fall closes in and the weather starts to cool, more events of one sort or
another are happening-- many focused on the November 4th election—
and that means there are volunteers to be recognized and thanked:
The ESGVRWF September evening meeting included a lovely dinner at
Vincenzo's Ristorante and insightful analyses of five propositions. Mike
Spence, Bob Green, Lois Shade, and Drexel Smith each did a wonderful
job, and I want to thank them again for their well-researched
presentations.
Ten ESGVRWF members and associates worked the LACFRW voter
registration booth at the L.A. County Fair—Norma and Darrell Shimel, Bob
and Ruth Green, Timmie Shoemaker, Carole Mullner, Marlene and Ben
Brandt, and Caryn and John Shewmaker were our enthusiastic volunteers
who made it difficult for anyone to miss the double-wide booth and
Republican presence. Great job!
The October 24th fashion show/general meeting is the culmination of
months of planning by the fashion show committee; Chairman Caryn
Shewmaker, Julie Shewmaker, Carole Mullner, Gayle Mason, Lois Barta,
Carmen Eckert, and Sigi A’Ce have put together this special event. Let’s
have an exceptionally good turn-out to acknowledge their hard work.
Finally, the nominating committee will present their recommended 2015
slate of officers at the October meeting. Chairman Linda Roy, Helen
Anderson, Natalia Raygoza, Deborah Behounek, and Carole Mullner
accepted this task and completed it in good order. It’s not easy to get
volunteers for this particular job; so, their effort is all the more appreciated.

These groups use a ranking or rating scale. For purposes of this guide an “X” identifies any level of support. In some
instances, a candidate is viewed as just better than the opponent. No endorsement means the organization either
opposed or found no reason to support a candidate. Group may not evaluate all districts, See group website.
Rating for State legislative offices only. Districts 48, 52, 55, 57 candidate ratings: Republicans A; incumbent Democrats F.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4 GENERAL ELECTION
VOTER GUIDE: JUDICIAL CANDIDATES
Judges are typically viewed as constitutionalists—judges who impartially enforce the law as written by the
voters and legislatures—or judicial activists—judges who interpret the law using their own values in support
of a political or social agenda instead of applying the law to the facts of a case before them. Craig Huey
has been studying judicial elections, especially those in California, for more than 20 years. His “California
Judicial Candidates Voter Guide,” adapted below, is a recognized tool that helps voters select “the right
judges.”

How the ratings work: Mr. Huey notes, “We
research the candidates carefully. We talk to
many on the phone. We have evaluated their
rulings, who appointed them, their
endorsements and other criteria. . . . The final
rating is the average of the candidate’s
Judicial Index and Qualifications. For example,
if the candidate had a Judicial Index of 8 and
Qualifications of 6, their overall rating would
be 7.

Club News: Working Together We Turn Words into Action
CARING
FOR AMERICA
Solving problems through the combined effort of individuals rather than encouraging
dependency on government programs.
Military Appreciation: We’ll be collecting for our annual Christmas check to the Wounded Warriors project to
aid them in their many projects that help the service person and their families.
Animal Shelter Comforts: We have been collecting empty prescription bottles for the Medical Department of
the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter. These bottles are being recycled so they serve a double purpose. The labels
should be removed as the bottles will be relabeled for the sick animals. It has been well received by the
Medical Department and our members. The word has spread
and the Women’s Club of West Covina gave a large bag. At
the beauty shop my operator is telling her customers so they
are bringing them in Her husband even got a large bag from
his friends! It is great to have people aware of the many areas
we help.
Stuffed Animals Doing Good: Generous donations of stuffed
animals have been used this month for Walk-a-Thon prizes for
Potrero School 3rd graders. The Walk-a-Thon raised over
$1,200.00 to be used for field trips and special assemblies.
Other animals have been distributed to the El Monte Police
Station to be used in their detective room to ease the suffering
of children waiting for parents.
Animals will also be used in Senior Thanksgiving baskets to be
taken to seniors in need just before the Thanksgiving holiday.
15 baskets in all will be distributed. Your donations of stuffed
animals mean so much to so many people and helps to get
the world out that, “Republican Women are wonderful caring people!” Thank you for all you do!
Book Donations at Work: Have you heard of “The Little Free Library” in the newspaper or on the internet? Well,
your book donations are part of this new way of getting books into the hands of students and people who want
to increase their literacy. Your book donations going to Kathleen McPherson’s 3 rd grade class are part of this
new trend. The idea is to set out books and allow students to take a book, but they must also leave a book, so
there are always books to choose from for readers. Students love sharing books they are done with and getting
a new books to love. Thanks to the Republican Women student reading skills are improving. Donations do
make a difference.
