As a legal entity, the Articles of Incorporation were filed on October 19, 1979 and officially became a not for profit corporation on October 22, 1979. The affairs of the corporation were managed by a Board of Trustees with four elected officers and twelve “Members-at-Large”. Wayne Troiano of Palatka was the first President, with Greg Stephens from Miami as Vice-President, Karen Nelson from Winter Springs as Secretary and the first Treasurer was Merv Lunsford. Records indicate that one of the first “sanctioned” tournaments took place in Miami in July 1979. There were 106 open single entries (@ $7.00 fee), 33 ladies, 20 lady double teams, 61 open double teams. The second sanctioned tournament was the Orange Park Open in September 1979. Within ten years the FDA established the Florida Dart Association “Hall of Fame” (at that time the only dart hall of fame in the world), Men’s and Ladies State Champions, Tournament of Champions (now know as the “Supershoot”) and the FDA Wizard State Team Championships (currently “State Team Championships”). A 10 th Anniversary Extravaganza Dart Tournament was held at the Hyatt of the Palm Beaches on September 12th, 13th & 14th, 1986. That tournament was jointly sponsored by the Everglades Darts Organization, the Miami-Dade Darts Association and the Broward County Darts Association. On Friday afternoon a team challenge was held between the Florida Dart Association and the Georgia Dart Association. The purse for this tournament was $10,000.00. Today the Florida Dart Association has twenty-five member associations. Its primary purpose is to sanction local dart tournaments, award championship points that determine state individual champions, sponsor the annual State Team Championships, Supershoot Championship Tournament and the Caribbean Cup Tournament held every other year. 6 PARTNERSHIP The history of the CDO and FDA begins prior to 1979 with an agreement between some players in Jamaica and Florida to get together, have fun and challenge each other in darts. The first four Caribbean Cup Tournaments were held in Jamaica, and then in 1986 the CDO decided to “rotate” the tournament to member countries. The first Cup residents of Florida participated in was in 1979 and then again in 1981. Florida missed the event in 1983, but returned in 1984 and won. In 1986, the tournament was held in Bermuda, but due to expense, Florida did not participate. New rules were drafted by the CDO that would allow Florida to field a “South Florida”. C.E. Leech was contacted for the 1988 event that permitted players from Palm Beach County down to Dade to participate. The new “South Florida” did very well…capturing the Team Event, Men’s Doubles and Ladies Singles. At the CDO meeting in 1988, Mr. Leech proposed that all future teams from Florida should be from the entire State and under the governorship of the Florida Darts Association. This proposal was tabled until the 1990 meeting, at which time it was again proposed by Mr. Leech & Dorothy Filley and adopted. At the 1990 meeting this player eligibility discussion actually lead to the decision that the Florida Dart Association was the single governing association in Florida and would be given full membership rights. In 1990, the “South Florida” team went to the Grand Cayman event. That team won the Ladies Singles title. In 1991, the first official FDA team was sent to Jamaica to compete…Florida captured the Mixed Doubles title. In 1992 Florida hosted the event in Orlando…Florida proved to be the strongest team that year, winning every event except Women’s singles and Women’s doubles. 7 MARKETING BENEFITS Gender Men Women % 70 % 30 % Race White African American Asian Hispanic Caribbean Other % 20 % 20 % 1% 10 % 40 % 9% Age Group 01 – 08 09 – 12 13 – 17 18 – 24 25 – 34 35 – 44 45 – 54 55 – 64 65 – 99 % 1% 2% 3% 5% 20 % 20 % 39 % 5% 5% Income $10,000+ $25,000+ $40,000+ $50,000+ $60,000+ $75,000+ % 2% 80 % 5% 5% 5% 3% International Exposure Bahamas Barbados Belize Bermuda Brazil British Virgin Islands Canada Cayman Islands Florida Guyana Jamaica Puerto Rico St. Lucia Trinidad & Tobago Turks & Caicos United States Local News TV Sports Commission Live Stream on Web/TV Tournament Program Marketing Goals Newspaper Articles Chamber of Commerce Florida Dart Web Site Community Support Dart Forums 8 FLORIDA DART ASSOCIATION CONTACTS DANE TEIXEIRA PRESIDENT [email protected] JOE CEBRYNSKI CARIBBEAN CUP DIRECTOR [email protected] STEPHANIE MINCEY TREASURER SPONSORSHIP COORDINATOR (813) 374-3105 [email protected] WWW.FLORIDADARTS.ORG 9
