Camp Hope is a five-day recreational
and residential summer camp serving
Chicago-area children, teenagers, and
young adults challenged by
developmental disabilities.

Inaugural Year
Camp Hope 2006
The inaugural session of Camp Hope took place
from July 17-22, 2005 at LaSalle Manor in
Plano, Illinois. During that session, we
welcomed 18 campers, from 15 different
Chicago suburbs. Our
campers are challenged
by disabilities such as
Autism, Cerebral Palsy,
Spina Bifida, Down
Syndrome, Cri-di-Chat,
and Mental Retardation.
In September 2004, the Camp Hope
Board of Directors was formed. This
board sought to inaugurate Camp
Hope during the summer of 2005, with Camp Hope strives to offer typical summer
one, five-day session.

the support of twenty-five high school
and college students who served as
“buddies” and group leaders. In
addition, Camp Hope was made
possible through the stewardship of
nearly one-hundred volunteers, who
assisted us with meal provision and
activity supervision.
It is because of the generous support of
our donors that we were able to create
one of the only residential summer
camps in the United States that offers
one-on-one care for every camper.
Our plans for 2006 and beyond are
much more ambitious and will only
come to fruition through the continued
generosity and support of our donors.

families, and our staff and volunteers,

care, we recruit high school seniors and college
students to serve as our
volunteer staff. The

Hope staff and, in so
doing, gave a week of
their time in complete
selfless service:

On the back page of this newsletter, you will
find our “Four Pillars of Service.” The mission
of Camp Hope is carried out through these
“Four Pillars.” In 2005, Camp Hope succeeded
in achieving its mission by providing a summer
camp experience for persons challenged by
developmental disabilities, by providing a week
of respite to the families of our campers, by
providing a service opportunity for our high
school and college student volunteers, and
finally, by promoting community involvement.
We are excited to announce that Camp Hope
will offer two, five-day sessions during the
summer of 2006! The dates are as follows:
Session One: July 23 - July 28, 2006
Session Two: July 30 - August 4, 2006
The application process
for the 2006 season will
begin in late January. If
you know anyone who
might benefit from Camp
Hope, either as a camper
or as a volunteer, please
let us know so we can
add them to our mailing list. All applications
will be given individual attention.
We are also excited to announce that we will
be using a new facility for the 2006 camp
season! We have made arrangements to use
YMCA’s Camp Algonquin in Algonquin, Illinois.
Camp Algonquin is closer to our “base of
operations” in Lake Forest, which will make it
easier on all our outside volunteers who make
the trek for meals and activities. Camp
Algonquin also offers air-conditioning (a much
needed improvement over last year) and a
larger pool that meets ADA specifications.
We will accept 18 campers per session (9 male
and 9 female), which will give us a total of 36
campers served in 2006. As a result, we will be
in need of volunteers in the following areas:
Activity Volunteers: Activity volunteers
lead activities such as Music, Movies, Arts
& Crafts, and P.E. Must be at least 18 years
of age, and have your own transportation.
Kitchen Volunteers: Kitchen volunteers
help our Kitchen Coordinators greet meal
groups, set up for meals, serve, and clean
up dining hall. Commitment is one, fiveday session of camp. Must be at least 18
years of age.
Meal Groups: Meal groups work with our
kitchen coordinator to organize a meal for
the entire camp. Commitment is about
4-5 hours
Nurse: Volunteer as Camp Nurse. Must be
a Registered Nurse with a valid Illinois
Nursing License. Morning, Evening, and
Overnight shifts are available.
