MISSION-DRIVEN
PROGRAMS
LETTER FROM:
Dr. J. Scott Mellina and Leah Ann Tibbitts
Dear Friends,
This last year was another year of growth and success for the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation
(TVMF). What we have built with your partnership
spans 37 years, and we want to extend sincere
thanks for your belief in our mission. As we
embark on a new year, we believe your continued
faith in our mission will inspire others to join
our efforts to better care for animals, effectively
educate community members and lend support
to veterinary professionals throughout the state
of Texas.
Perhaps what we love most about our TVMA
members and Foundation supporters is the profound sense of community we have with one another. This was never more apparent than when
we mourned with our friend and colleague over
his devastating clinic fire last June. An electrical
fire completely destroyed Dr. Kenneth “Kenny”
Kimbrough’s animal clinic, and 38 animals lost
their lives in the blaze.
Out of this awful tragedy, our friends and supporters brought immeasurable hope. More than
$33,000 was raised in just two weeks to support
rebuilding efforts for Kimbrough Animal Hospital.
The Foundation Board of Trustees awarded an
emergency contribution of $2,500 to assist Dr.
Kimbrough and pledged to match donations
made for Dr. Kimbrough up to a total of $10,000.
The quick response of TVMA members and TVMF
supporters to help a friend in need is exactly what
we have come to expect of the amazing community that embodies these two organizations.
It is thanks to the commitment and dedication of
these friends and supporters that we are able to
share more exciting milestones from 2014.
The TVMF PALS Program, which provides
fundamental health care for animals belonging
to homebound community members, continues
to experience tremendous growth. With more
than 200 clients and companion animals on the
waiting list, TVMF is working tirelessly to accommodate all the homebound neighbors in need

of help with the assistance of our community
partners—Meals on Wheels and More (MOWAM)
in Austin and the Brazos Valley Community Action
Agency Meals on Wheels in Bryan/College Station.
New service areas include an expansion into Williamson County. We anticipate new community
partnerships in the coming years that will enable
us to serve even further beyond the Greater Austin
and Bryan/College Station communities.
Our community awareness programs continue to
grow by leaps and bounds. During this past year,
TVMF partnered with TexVetPets.org
and Texas veterinarians to host seven events in
four cities.
TexVetPets.org was successfully launched in
2014 and continues to serve as a timely and
relevant resource for pet owners. Created in
partnership with TVMA, TexVetPets.org takes the
partnership between pet owner and veterinarian
online, offering pet caregivers a health resource
that provides the most accurate and reliable information available on the web.
The Rusk Veterinary Grant Program, which
provides financial assistance to low-income
families who need help to care for their pet family
members, awarded the inaugural grant to support
Shammie, a hearing-impaired feline, and her
owner, Ms. Baker. TVMA member veterinarian Dr.
Anmarie Macfarland of San Antonio applied for
Rusk Program assistance on behalf of Ms. Baker
and Shammie. What a wonderful snapshot of
TVMF’s mission at work!
These milestones are just a few examples of the
exciting work happening through TVMF in our
Texas community. Thank you again for believing in
our mission and supporting TVMF with your time,
talents and treasures. We share our FY 2014-2015
accomplishments and milestones with you because
they simply would not have been possible without
each and every one of our friends and supporters.
Cheers to another wonderful year ahead of us!

HOW do we SERVE?
Buck-A-Year Program
Through this program, TVMF supports
the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Scientist Research Training Program (VMSRTP)
by providing scholarships to students
and exposing these aspiring young professionals to cutting-edge research within
the veterinary profession.
Student fellows conduct full-time research
during a 12-week period in the summer
under the advice and direction of a faculty
mentor. In addition to conducting research,
students participate on field trips to other
research sites to broaden and enrich their
exposure to veterinary research. The program concludes with a research conference
and a closing banquet.
SNAPSHOT
OF
MISSION, VISION
AND IMPACT
For 37 years, we have served the
Texas community of pet owners and
veterinary professionals through
mission-driven programs.
Our MISSION
TVMF promotes the well-being of
animals and strengthens the
human-animal bond in partnership
with Texas veterinary professionals.
This year’s TVMF grant recipients were
Kelly Rozas and Gena Esposito. This
summer, Rozas worked in the laboratory
of Dr. Morgan Scott (Veterinary Pathobiology), and her project was on the
Our VISION
“Impacts of Alternatives to Antibiotics
Professional integrity and public
on Antimicrobial Resistance of Escheducation for responsible stewardship
erichia coli in Production Swine,” while
of animals
Esposito worked in the laboratory of Dr.
Jan Suchodolski (Veterinary Small Animal
Clinical Sciences) on “Beta-Hydroxybutyrate and Gluconolactone as Possible Bioindicators in Dogs with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.”
Rozas is passionate about her research project because of how enormously relevant the topic
of antibiotic resistance is today. The lab staff she encountered through the course of her project
inspired her. She believes the experience she garnered through this opportunity will open the
door to new and exciting career possibilities, specifically in a mixed animal practice. She feels so
fortunate to have been selected to participate in the VMSRTP.
What interested Esposito most about participating in the VMSRTP was learning how veterinary
research differed from ecology research, where most of her experience lies. Esposito believes
the exposure to the VMSRTP will help make her a better clinician as her project has clear clinical
applications.
“Irritable bowel disease and other chronic enteropathies can be difficult to diagnose and manage,”
she said. “The project I am working on is trying to combat this issue through the use of biomarkers.
The idea that my research might help clinicians diagnose difficult cases and help clients get faster
answers and solutions for their pets [inspires me to do what I do].”

Congratulations to both candidates on their selection to participate in VMSRTP. We expect to see
great things from both students in the future!
Community Education
This program educates Texas pet owners on proper animal care and the importance of regular
veterinarian visits. TVMF achieves this by offering awareness events that are free to the public,
such as the Pet Heatstroke Prevention Awareness events that are held each summer in various
Texas cities and rank as TVMF’s most popular community outreach event.
During this past year, TVMF partnered with TexVetPets.org and Texas veterinarians to host seven
events in four cities. During heatstroke awareness events, pet owners can learn how to prevent
heatstroke, how to recognize the signs of heatstroke and what to do if their pet overheats. Each
pet owner who stops by receives information and a goody bag that includes a heat index chart
and a brochure outlining the signs of heatstroke, how to prevent it and what to do if a pet overheats. Also included with the educational materials distributed to the pet-owning public is information
about TexVetPets.org, where pet owners can access timely, relevant and accurate information on
a wide variety of pet health topics. Because these events are always free, TVMF depends on community and professional collaborations and donations to help strengthen the reach and impact of
these efforts.
TVMA member veterinarians have partnered with TVMF across the state to host heatstroke awareness events in their own communities. Because of these events, heatstroke awareness reached
hundreds of Texas pet owners who are now educated on how to prevent heatstroke, how to recognize the signs of heatstroke and what to do if their pet overheats.
A TVMF/TVP Pet Education and Heatstroke Awareness Event in Dallas
“Heatstroke is one of the most critical, often fatal emergencies that we see in Texas. The toughest thing about
heatstroke is that it is preventable! When we held our
heatstroke awareness event in Dallas, it was amazing to see
how unaware people were about the prevalence of heatstroke and what the signs were.
It is also important to get the word out about how to
properly address heatstroke since some common ‘tips’
that people hear can actually make things worse. We were
able to reach a large group of Dallas pet lovers during our
event, and I am so grateful to the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation for providing the materials, setup and
support that was necessary to make our event a success.”

TVMF Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors (PALS)
The purpose of the TVMF PALS program is to provide fundamental health care for the animals
belonging to homebound community members enrolled in the Austin and Bryan/College Station
Meals on Wheels (MOW) PALS (Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors) programs and to thus to keep
these animals and their families united as long as possible.
Imagine the thought of having to surrender your animal simply because you have limited mobility
and may be homebound. How detrimental would this separation be for both human owner and
pet companion? The goal of TVMF PALS is simple. TVMF and MOW strive to support homebound
community members who are at risk of losing their pets at times of crisis only because no one is
there to help them.
When a challenging situation becomes too progressed, the pet must be separated from their family.
Neither the pet nor the pet owner wins when a pet is removed from the care of its homebound owner.
TVMF is partnering with MOW through the TVMF PALS program to intervene before this happens.
Clients are not required to pay anything if they are unable to afford veterinary care. Our goal is
simple. We strive to keep homebound community members and their animal family members
together as long as possible. Every individual served through this program is low-income.
With the help of TVMF friends and supporters, we are making a difference for homebound community members who may otherwise be separated from their beloved pet and thus deprived of
the many benefits of a healthy, long-lived pet and the human-animal bond.
“The positive impact that the TVMF PALS partnership has
had on [Meal on Wheels and More of Austin] clients and
their pets is hard to put into words. It provides a level of
veterinary care that the vast majority of our clients could
never afford or access on their own. Beyond lifting the
financial burden, it lifts the emotional burden, the constant worry that our elderly and disabled clients have
when they know their pets need care they cannot provide.
That value is immeasurable. It cannot be counted, but it can be
seen in the joyful eyes and smiles of our clients every time we
bring a pet home from their check-up.”
— Heather Allard, MOWAM PALS Coordinator
“I’m a widow, and my pet helps to fill the void in my life. Having
your program allows me to have him. I’m on Social Security,
and that doesn’t go far. Thank you, and God bless you all.”
— TVMF PALS Client
Rusk Veterinary Grants
The Rusk Veterinary Grants offer financial assistance for low-income families in need of medical or surgical intervention for their beloved pet. These one-time grants aim to preserve the human-animal bond
by funding life-saving or life-changing veterinary care for a pet that might otherwise be relinquished,
euthanized or enduring prolonged suffering.
This grant program is named in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Colton Rusk and Eli, the
bomb-sniffing dog assigned to Rusk in his post as a military dog handler. When Rusk was killed by sniper
fire in Afghanistan on December 6, 2010, Eli threw his body on his fallen handler and stayed with him
until other Marines arrived at the scene.
TVMF wanted to further recognize the service of both Eli and Rusk by creating a veterinary grant program
named in their honor because their relationship exemplifies the strength of the human-animal bond.
TexVetPets.org
TexVetPets.org is a new offering provided in partnership between TVMF and TVMA. It is a pet health
information website with an emphasis on current, reliable and peer-reviewed content. Each article is
written by a member of TVMA or TEVA and reviewed by two veterinarians. TexVetPets.org also includes
features like a gallery where visitors can upload photos of their pets, a glossary with definitions of diseases and commonly used terms and a news and events page. The idea for this program is to connect pet
owners with reliable, accurate information from veterinary professionals outside of the exam room.
Memorial Gift Program
TVMF’s Memorial Gift program is for those who wish to remember a deceased individual or pet. Memorial
donations help fund the efforts of the Foundation, including the Emergency Student Grant Fund, stethoscopes for new veterinary students, owner education programs and the Rusk Veterinary Grant program.
Shammie is the first recipient of the Rusk Veterinary Grant
Online Pet Memory Gallery
Pets bring joy and companionship into our lives. When we lose a pet, we lose a family member. TVMF provides a wonderful and lasting way for pet owners to celebrate the special bond between humans and animals while paying tribute to the memory of a beloved pet. Launched in the summer of 2012, TVMF’s online
Pet Memorial Gallery serves as a location where memories are preserved, respected and honored—always.
With a $10 gift, pet owners can create an online memorial for their beloved animals. All donations made in
honor of a pet in the online Pet Memorial Gallery benefit the TVMF PALS (Pets Assisting the Lives of Seniors)
program.
“I sent my veterinarian a thank-you card, but I wanted to
say thank you to [the Foundation] too. As you know, my
precious kitty died recently, and our veterinarian sent a donation to your Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation in her
memory. I was so touched to receive the card and to have the
opportunity to post a picture and bio to the Memorial Wall!
It’s like being able to have an obituary for a pet, and I never
expected to find anything like that.
It was such a thoughtful gesture from the veterinarian, and
I told him and his office as much in a thank-you note. Thank
you, [TVMF], for coming up with such a wonderful idea!
What an easy way to help ease someone’s pain from losing
a pet while doing good with a charitable contribution at the
same time.”
— Jennifer Barrera, Pet Memorial Wall Contributor
Texas Animal Hall of Fame
Each year, TVMF honors exceptional animals through the Texas Animal Hall of Fame. This annual tradition began in 1984 and supports the Foundation’s mission to honor the human-animal bond and allow
animal lovers to share in celebrating their pet’s accomplishments by serving as nominators.
The 2014 Texas Animal Hall of Fame hero inductee was Jag Bowen, a German Shepard that alerted
his human family to the fact that someone had broken into their home two years after they
rescued him from the Killeen Animal Shelter. Due to Jag calling attention to the home invasion,
the perpetrator was apprehended and eventually convicted. Jag’s heroism saved the Bowen family
once again when he awoke his sleeping family during a house fire last year.
Jag suffers from Cauda Equina syndrome, a condition that makes his rear legs weak and atrophied,
sometimes requiring him to rely on a wheelchair for mobility. This makes his heroism all the more
remarkable as the devotion Jag has for his family gave him the strength to crawl up into bed with
Mr. Bowen and alert him to the fire. Despite these emerging challenges, Jag’s family remains loyal in
their love and care and forever grateful for the impact their adopted pet has had on their lives.
Kelsie, a nationally certified therapy dog with Therapy Dogs Incorporated and the founding dog for
the Train A Dog-Save A Warrior Ambassador Therapy Dog program, was named the 2014 Texas
Animal Hall of Fame companion inductee for her service as a wounded warrior’s angel. Kelsie
has served as the model for several therapy dog programs in Texas and was the driving force and
inspiration for the creation of the national organization Paws and Stripes. This extraordinary and
outstanding dog works side by side with hundreds of wounded warriors to relieve their stress,
pain, fears and anxiety and to quiet the horrors of war.
Echo, a loyal companion and guide dog to John Bramblitt, was selected as the 2014 Texas Hall
of Fame inductee in the professional category. Echo was trained at Guide Dogs of Texas, the only
guide dog school in the state that provides guide dogs for Texans who are visually impaired to
increase their freedom, mobility and independence. Echo’s temperament is beautifully suited for
guide work as she is willing, calm, confident and smart.
Echo and John, a blind visual artist and painter, have been an unstoppable team since 2009. Echo
has made what John most loves to do possible. She gives him the freedom and confidence to
travel to new cities, navigate new hotels and airports and conduct his interviews, programs and
painting workshops. The impact Echo has had on John’s life is immeasurable, and it filers into the
impact John has on many others.
