Eyer Middle School Important Dates in May
Eyer Middle School
From the Principal, Mike Kelly
Summer is quickly approaching as we enter the school year’s
home stretch. There are many exciting activities taking place in the
month of May as we approach the end of the 2014-2015 school year.
Please check out the online school calendar and website for specific
dates and information.
Special thanks extended to our sixth, seventh and eighth grade
students, parents and teachers for their excellent efforts in completion of the PSSA tests. Attendance was excellent and the students
worked very hard to do their best.
Algebra 1 Keystone Exams will be administered to 7th and 8th
grade students currently enrolled in Algebra 1 Honors courses on
May 18th and 19th. Best of luck to all students taking these exams!
Although the end of the school year is nearing and thoughts
may be drifting to summer vacation plans, I want to encourage all
parents to continue to support and encourage their children’s academic efforts as they finish out the school year. Just a reminder, if
you have a planned trip , be sure to submit a trip request form at
least 5 SCHOOL days prior to your trip. A trip excuse submitted
after returning from a trip does not qualify as an “excused” absence. Please refer to page 4 of the student handbook for attendance
guidelines.
As the weather starts to get warmer and wardrobes change,
please remind students about proper dress code. You can refer to the
student handbook on page 13 for help in guiding your child. If your
child comes to school in clothing that does not adhere to school
dress code guidelines, you may be called to bring in appropriate
school clothing. As always, thank you for your support.

New Student Ambassadors
The Eyer Middle School Counseling Department recognizes that students new to Eyer face
many changes and may be challenged when entering a new middle school environment. The
New Student Ambassador Program is a new component of the transition program we already
have in place.
The new component is put into place to ease the transition to a new school as well as to foster
new connections with peers. The program is designed for any student who is new to the district
or school and is a complement to our 5th -6th grade and 8th-9th grade transition program.
Student Ambassadors have been selected from each Pod and grade level to assist the grade
level counselors with transitioning our new students. After the counselor completes his/her role
with the new student, a grade level and Pod Ambassador will be assigned to help with daily
routines, such as escorting to and from classes, figuring out how lunches and the LMC work,
as well as with locker assistance. This program utilizes the power of student leadership while at
the same time creating a positive, caring culture in school. Our new student Ambassadors have
received training from the counseling staff and are now ready to take on their new positions as
role models and guides. We look forward to launching this new program and congratulate our
New Student Ambassadors.
Congratulations Mr. Ketcham — April’s Teacher of the Month
Teacher of the Month Program
“Teacher of the Month” is winding down at Eyer Middle School this year. The purpose of this program is to acknowledge and honor outstanding teachers who go above and beyond to support students. Teachers can be nominated by staff, parents, or students. A link to the online nomination form
can be found on the Eyer Middle School webpage under “Teacher of the Month”. The Principal and
Assistant Principal will select a winner each month, based on the best nomination. Nominations for
May must be submitted by the following date:
May - May 22, 2015
The winning teacher will have his/her name displayed on the school website, receive a special lunch,
and also be awarded his/her very own "Teacher of the Month" parking space out in front of the building. He/she will be able to park in this assigned space until the next "Teacher of the Month" is announced.

May IST News
The International Literacy Association has developed a position statement stressing the importance of family-school partnerships. They stress that an essential element of literacy instruction in the United States begins at home. They highly endorse family-school partnerships to support student learning. “Family involvement is a potentially powerful element of effective literacy instruction”, so the IRA believes “parents, family and community members, teachers, school administrators, researchers, and policymakers must be aware
of its importance and must effectively execute their respective roles in establishing family involvement in
literacy learning.”
There is extensive evidence that family involvement in the education of children is critical to effective
schooling. Research shows that family involvement improves student achievement, attitudes toward learning, and self-esteem. Schools that undertake and support strong comprehensive family involvement efforts
and have strong linkages with the communities they serve are more likely to produce students who perform
better than identical schools that do not involve families. Family involvement in a child’s education is a
more important factor in student success than family income or education.
Here are some suggestions to make reading a part of your home life:





Be A Role Good Model
Let your child see you reading a variety of materials.
Have conversations with your children about what you read.
Fill your home with materials about your family’s interests.
Engage your family in conversations about their ideas based on their readings and observations.
Celebrate reading!
Institute Family Reading Clubs
 Set aside a regular time and place for books so that reading becomes as natural as eating and sleeping.
 Read a book with your child, alternating paragraphs/pages, as you enjoy it together.
 As you finish a chapter, retell the main points. At the end of the book, retell the story together.
 Talk about the characters, setting, plot, and life experiences.
 Compare the similarities and differences of the books you read.
 Make regular trips to the library. Join the summer reading program at your library.
 Encourage children to develop an interest in a variety of genres such as mystery, biography, historical
fiction, and poetry.
 Try to seek a balance between school book activities, home and school literature activities, and familiarity with newspapers, magazines, and other text media that address contemporary social, cultural, and
civic issues.
More Books = More Reading = Better Reading
