April 3-6, 2014 at Malco Grandview Cinema www.crossroadsfilmfestival.com www.crossroadsfilmfestival.com Welcome who we are 4 the society 5 3 The Mississippi Film Office The Mississippi Film Office welcomes you to the 2014 Crossroads Film Festival. Whether you are here to watch the films or to watch your film, we’re glad you’re here and proud you put Crossroads on your film festival calendar. sponsors8 workshops10 venues11 film listings 12 live music 30 scheduleback Society President’s Letter Dear Friends: As an original sponsor of the Festival, we are true believers in the power of film. While our everyday mission is to attract and support film production, our long term vision is to create and encourage all filmmakers. Through Crossroads, we are able to embrace both. Mississippi is a solid place to make a movie: beautiful locations, hospitable people, supportive communities, a Legislature that understands our mission, and a Governor who champions its progress. Our film incentive program includes a 25-30% cash rebate on your Mississippi spend, including resident and non-resident cast and crew payroll. Mississippi is an amazing place of inspiration and accomplishment. A Mississippian stands at every crossroads of American culture. Through words and notes and paint and film...Mississippians have always been storytellers. Blemished as it is by unforgivable moments, Mississippi has yielded an unmatchable heritage. The challenge and responsibility of this office, and the obligation we feel to you, is to continue this great heritage, and to create, nurture, and support every storyteller. For us filmmaking is more than economics. Every film creates opportunity, and the greatest opportunity comes in the explanation of a life, of a place, of a people. In the telling of our stories, real or imagined, we create understanding, discourse, and illumination. There is nothing better than what we do, as there is no boundary to what we can achieve. On behalf of the Board of the Crossroads Film Society, I welcome you to the 15th Annual Crossroads Film Festival! We will always encourage you, the filmmaker, with financial and educational opportunity. And we will continue to sustain you, the filmgoer, by supporting film festivals and filmmakers seeking the independent voice. We know that all lives are made richer by the stories we share. We hope you enjoy Crossroads. Fifteen years ago a small group of determined filmmakers and lovers of film came together to form the Crossroads Film Society with the goals of broadening the experience of our Ward Emling The Mississippi Film Office www.filmMississippi.org viewers, and continuing the tradition of Mississippi’s storytellers by giving our filmmakers a home to showcase their talents. Why Film in Mississippi? Over the years Crossroads has screened over 1,000 films from all over Recently expanded and improved, the Mississippi Motion Picture Incentive Program is now among the best in the United States. It specifically includes feature film, television, documentary, commercial, video game, and new technology production; and it qualifies production distributed through every medium and on screens of every shape and size. the world, allowing our audiences the opportunity to see and experience stories, cultures, and perspectives to which many of us would not have been exposed. In addition, we have hosted hundreds of filmmakers – and have shown many of them a Mississippi they did not expect! Thanks to the support of our numerous volunteers and our generous sponsors, Crossroads has grown throughout the years and now includes children’s programs, film industry panels and discussions, receptions, and music. We have a great festival planned for this year and hope you will come join us in celebrating 15 years of film! Greg Smith President, Board of Directors The incentive is a simple and direct cash rebate program of 25% on local spend, 25% on non-resident cast and crew payroll, and 30% on Mississippi resident cast and crew payroll. And we have added a 5% bonus rebate on the salaries of honorably discharged Veterans. We have a very low $50,000 minimum spend. There is a $10 million rebate limit per project, with an individual salary cap of $5 million and a $20 million annual rebate cap. And we come from the production community, so we understand the challenges you face and know how to support you and your film from research to premiere. We are a multi-cultural, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to international, national, and local film and video. We also encourage discussion and production of film and video, particularly as related to the cultural, educational and economic vitality of the state and region. Our society’s objectives are met through year-round programming, including special events, lectures, workshops, and the annual Crossroads Film Festival. The mission of the Crossroads Film Society is to celebrate the art of filmmaking in all of its diversity and depth by bringing international and domestic films to the Deep South; facilitating discussions for film enthusiasts and filmmakers; presenting and honoring films highlighting Southern experiences (especially those from Mississippi); and providing educational opportunities to empower aspiring storytellers to share their vision with the world. The Society strives to be a cultural crossroads, bringing the world to the Deep South and sharing Southern perspectives with the world. Crossroads Film Society relies on its membership and donations for a large part of its organizational budget. The extent and quality of its programming is directly related to membership and donations. The Ruma Award Crossroads bestows The Ruma Award annually on the most promising Mississippi filmmaker competing at the Crossroads Film Festival. The award honors a former Crossroads Vice President, the late Ruma Haque. The festival commissions a notable local artist to create a new work each year for the award. Ian Hanson is an artist, designer and printmaker who lives and works in Jackson, Mississippi. He is an alumnus of the University of WisconsinMadison where he studied art and design, before returning to Jackson, his home town. Ian is currently a founding member of Midcity Print, a screen printing collective based in Midtown and a co-founder of Priced to Move, an annual Jackson art and music event created to showcase affordable art from emerging local artists. About the Piece: “Dutch the Horse” is a painting on canvas created as a whimsical, lighthearted take on the very real lengths those behind the lens will go to get the perfect shot. It is intended to speak to both the humorous and rather uncomfortable situations production crews find themselves in so often when they set out to tell a story with film. Festival Glass Awards Artist 2014 Crossroads award winners are presented with a beautiful glass sculpture created by Mississippi artist Jerri Sherer of Light+Glass Studio in Jackson. Jerri is an exhibiting member of the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi, a member and officer of the Jackson Arts Collective, and volunteers every summer for VSA ArtBuds, a program that pairs artists with special needs children. Her work can be found at Light and Glass Studio, the Craftsmen’s Guild Gallery and at Art Fairs throughout the Southeast. Transformative Film Award Envisioned by former board member deborah Wright, this award is given to a film that has the ability to transform opinions, lives, and ultimately, history. Herman’s Pick In honor of former festival director, the late Herman Snell, we share a film that would certainly have been on his to-see list. Borrowed from the name of Herman’s weekly music column in the Jackson Free Press, “Herman’s Pick” is chosen based on elements he appreciated in movies: time travel or altered time, alternate realities, psychic powers, double meanings or ambiguity, and/ or the ability for a film to be thoughtprovoking. In his words, “If a movie contains any of these elements, I’m going to like the movie on concept alone.” Individual: $35 / Student: $25 • Discount for screenings of Festival films and special events during the year • Members-only film screenings and parties • Newsletters and special notice of upcoming events • 2 Tickets to non-festival films • Invitation to planning meetings Dual: $50 All regular membership benefits plus: • 2 Membership cards Film Buff: $100 All dual membership benefits plus: • 1 Crossroads Film Festival poster • 1 Crossroads Film Festival t-shirt • Listing in Festival Program • Invitation to all Festival receptions Star: $250 All dual membership benefits plus: • 1 Crossroads Film Festival poster • 2 Crossroads Film Festival t-shirts • Listing in Festival Program • Invitation to all Festival receptions Director’s Club: $500 All dual membership benefits plus: • 2 Crossroads Film Festival posters • 2 Crossroads Film Festival t-shirts • 2 All-Access Festival Passes • Listing in Festival Program • Invitation to all Festival receptions & exclusive events Producer’s Club: $1,000 All dual membership benefits plus: • 2 Crossroads Film Festival posters • 4 Crossroads Film Festival t-shirts • 4 All-Access Festival Passes • Listing in Festival Program • Invitation to all Festival receptions and exclusive events 6 The 15th Annual Crossroads Film Festival HELP US WELCOME THE FIRST BOOK MY PET ELEPHANT AND BEST FRIEND, TARU Released by Tate publishing & enterprises, llc. After the Zippers’ split, Mathus worked with Buddy Guy, Elvis Costello, Luther Dickinson and Alvin Youngblood Hart in the South Memphis String Band. He has recorded his own albums with the most recent called “Dark Night of the Soul” recorded at Dial Back Sound Studio near Taylor, Mississippi. Considered his most personal and hardest rocking album to date, it spans from southern roots music to soulful rock with fiery guitars, pounding piano, and sha-la-las. “I could stay in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana and never have to leave,” he admits, “but the point is I want people to hear this album — to bring a little gris-gris to the rest of America.” Daniel Guaqueta DJ Daniel Guaqueta is a Mississippi-born, Colombianraised composer/singer/musician. He’s an original member of Esperanza Plantation Records’ prog-instrumental band Questions in Dialect and creator of (TR). Guaqueta has toured with Discover America (supporting Circa Survive, MUTEMATH, & Mae), Storage 24, Taylor Grocery Band, & Wooden Finger. Saturday 4/5 After party with live music @ Duling Hall, 9pm ($10 for non-passholders) St. Paul & The Broken Bones deliver the promises of a great soul band- grit, elemental rhythm, tight-as-a-drumhead playing, and a profound depth of feeling. Front man Paul Janeway’s stage name “St. Paul” alludes to his upbringing in a non-denominational, Pentecostal- leaning Chelsea, Alabama church. Janeway says, “The only secular music that I heard at all was a ‘70s group called the Stylistics, and Sam Cooke. That was about it. The rest of it was all gospel music.” In his late teens, his world opened up to Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Otis Redding, James Carr, and O.V. Wright. His first band endeavor was in a Led Zeppelin cover band which connected him with Bassist Jesse Phillips. From there, they came together with four other talented Alabama musicians to form St. Paul & The Broken Bones. Half The City is the compelling full-length Single Lock/Thirty Tigers debut for this Birmingham, Alabamabased sextet, who have already created a maelstrom of interest with their roof-raising live shows and self-released four-song 2012 EP. Produced by Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes, and recorded and mixed in the storied R&B mecca of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the album harkens back to the region’s classic soul roots while extending the form with electrifying potency. “I’m going to be dancing, getting in the aisles, climbing on tables,” he says. “That’s just the way we do it. It really takes me back to church. There’s not a lot of difference. When I get on stage, it’s, ‘All right, it’s time to pour it on.’” Sunday 4/6 Filmmakers’ Awards Brunch @ Iron Horse Grill, 10am noon (passholders only) Guests of the festival and passholders celebrate the films of the festival.
