The THEOLOGYof SUFFERING - Catholic Medical Association
CATHOLIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION 78th Annual Educational Conference SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS . OCTOBER 22–24, 2009 The THEOLOGY of SUFFERING Bringing Faith, Hope & Love to the Art of Healing Jointly Sponsored by the Catholic Medical Association and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine CATHOLIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION 78th Annual Educational Conference DEDICATED TO ST. PIO OF PIETRELCINA Through his prayerful intercession, many who suffered were healed of sickness and disease ST. PIO OF PIETRELCINA May 25, 1887- September 23, 1968 Padre Pio was born of simple, hard working farming people on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, southern Italy. He was tutored privately until entry to the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars at the age of 15. Of feeble health but strong will, with the help of grace he completed the required studies and was ordained a priest in 1910. On September 20, 1918 the five wounds of Our Lord’s Passion appeared on his body, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church. Countless numbers were attracted to his confessional and many more received his saintly counsel and spiritual guidance through correspondence. His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer and continual austerity. His letters to his spiritual directors reveal the ineffable sufferings, physical and spiritual, which accompanied him all through his life. They also reveal his very deep union with God, his burning love for the Blessed Eucharist and Our Blessed Lady. Worn out by over half a century of intense suffering and constant apostolic activity in San Giovanni Rotondo, he was called to his heavenly reward on September 23, 1968. After a public funeral which attracted almost 100,000 mourners his body was entombed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church. Increasing numbers flock to his tomb from all parts of the world and many testify to the spiritual and temporal graces received. Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio on June 16, 2002. PRAYER TO ST. PIO OF PIETRELCINA O God, You gave Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, Capuchin priest, the great privilege of participating in a unique way in the passion of Your Son, grant me through his intercession the grace of … which I ardently desire; and above all grant me the grace of living in conformity with the death of Jesus, to arrive at the glory of the resurrection. Amen. CATHOLIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION Upholding the Principles of the Catholic Faith in the Science and Practice of Medicine BOARD OF DIRECTORS October 22, 2009 President Louis C. Steven White, M.D. Dear Colleagues, The Springfield Guild is honored to host the 78th Annual Educational Conference of the Catholic Medical Association in Springfield – the home of Abraham Lincoln and the capital of the great state of Illinois. As other conferences have in the past, this conference will explore a theme of profound significance for Catholic physicians and the profession of medicine. The focus of this year’s conference is on suffering – a perennial challenge for human beings, but a particular stumbling block to our increasingly secularized culture. Unfortunately, as individuals and Western culture have lost the Catholic faith in a loving God who has conquered suffering and death, the temptation increasingly is not to respond to suffering with compassion, but to eliminate the suffering person. Our Planning Committee has worked hard to assemble a faculty of talented and knowledgeable speakers. The faculty will explore the challenge of suffering and how we – as physicians and patients, as individuals and as a society – can respond to suffering more effectively as Catholic Christians, bringing the healing power of faith, hope and love to the clinical encounter. I have always enjoyed the retreat-like atmosphere of CMA conferences, and so this year’s conference will include the old traditions of daily Mass, confessions, and Eucharistic Adoration, and the new tradition of the Wednesday evening of reflection. It is our prayer and hope that all who attend this Conference will leave inspired, encouraged and fortified with the education and graces that I’m sure will come upon this gathering. Make each one of us, aware of the great mission that is entrusted to him, strive always to be, in the performance of daily service, an instrument of your merciful love. Enlighten our minds, guide our hands, make our hearts diligent and compassionate. Ensure that in every patient we know how to discern the features of your divine Face. You who are the Way, provide us with the gift of knowing how to imitate You every day as medical doctors not only of the body but of the whole person, helping those who are sick to tread with trust their own earthly path until the moment of their encounter with You. You who are the Truth, provide us with the gift of wisdom and science in order to penetrate the mystery of man and his transcendent destiny as we draw near to him in order to discover the causes of his malady and find suitable remedies for it. You who are the Life, provide us with the gift of preaching and bearing witness to the ‘Gospel of life’ in our profession, committing ourselves to defending it always, from conception to its natural end, and to respect the dignity of every human being, and especially the dignity of the weakest and the most in need. Make us O Lord, Good Samaritans, ready to welcome, treat, and console those we encounter in our work. Following the example of the holy medical doctors who have preceded us, help us to offer our generous contribution to the constant renewal of health care structures. Bless our studies and our profession; enlighten our research and our teaching. Lastly, grant to us, having constantly loved and served You in our suffering brethren, that at the end of our earthly pilgrimage we may contemplate your glorious countenance and experience the joy of the encounter with You in your Kingdom of joy and everlasting peace. Amen JOHN PAUL II THE VATICAN, 29 JUNE 2000 The 1995 Restatement of THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES Circa 400 B.C. I SWEAR in the presence of the Almighty and before my family, my teachers and my peers that according to my ability and judgment I will keep this Oath and Stipulation. TO RECKON all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient. I WILL FOLLOW that method of treatment which according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous. I will neither prescribe nor administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform act or omission with direct intent deliberately to end a human life. I will maintain the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life. WITH PURITY, HOLINESS AND BENEFICENCE I will pass my life and practice my art. Except for the prudent correction of an imminent danger, I will neither treat any patient nor carry out any research on any human being without the valid informed consent of the subject or the appropriate legal protector thereof, understanding that research must have as its purpose the furtherance of the health of that individual. Into whatever patient setting I enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption and further from the seduction of any patient. WHATEVER IN CONNECTION with my professional practice or not in connection with it I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad, I will not divulge, reckoning that all such should be kept secret. WHILE I CONTINUE to keep this Oath unviolated may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine with the blessing of the Almighty and respected by my peers and society, but should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot.
