Michael Maltzan,
New Carver architect
Te Skid Row Housing Trust
takes a really holistic approach
to solving the homeless problem.
Well, I think it has to do with
what supportive housing is: having
capital sources to actually create the
housing, securing rental subsidies
that make it possible for people to
afford the rent; and then providing
services that break the cycle of
people getting into transitional
housing or shelters and then
returning to the streets.
How did the designers become
involved? Brian Furst got his
mother, who is an interior designer,
involved. She talked to some of her
colleagues, who liked the design of
the building and the work that we’re
doing, and it went from there.
And the night’s celebration? We
felt like we should have a birthday.
Year 20, that’s kind of a milestone…
22 buildings and more than 1,340
units for the most vulnerable people
living in our city.
