A Surprising Family Outing

Sometimes your family and extended family can totally surprise you out of nowhere. I
was the best man at my brother’s wedding
this June, and I brought my partner Rob as
my date. Other than my father’s funeral last
year, this was really the first event to which I
brought him where we needed to interact with
my aunts, uncles, and cousins. My Mom, my
brother, and my two sisters have known for
years that I was gay and they also have gotten
to know him very well over the past 3 years.
After the funeral ceremonies at my father’s
funeral, my one Aunt and Uncle asked me to
introduce them to my “friend” – I didn’t have
to say I was gay, they just knew, and were really cool with it!
Now at the wedding, thankfully a joyous occasion, we
entered the next phase. Even though it was a wedding for
my brother, each one of the members of the extended family came up to basically give their blessing to my boyfriend
and I. They even hinted that they would be very supportive of us getting married! All this just blew me away. I
half expected them to not even know about gay marriage,
but the press about it during the elections might have
brought it to their attention…or maybe they were just a
heck of a lot cooler then I originally thought.

does come, we can count
on the love and support of

It just goes to prove that
when you come out, your
friends and family can
really surprise you. They
might not accept things
right away, but if they can
see that you are truly happy with your life the way it
is, then they will overcome
their initial apprehension
for their love of you.

Another Aunt, at my father’s funeral, told my partner
that he couldn’t sit in the front rows with us because
he was not family - this after Rob had spent many more
hours with me at my father’s bedside than she had. At
the wedding, she personally asked me to dance, and
whispered in my ear that she hopes to see Rob and I get
married one of these days. She said she was mad that it
couldn’t happen here, but offered that I could always do
it in Montreal. I had written her off years ago as being
extremely anti-gay, so naturally I was shocked at this
change of attitude.

Near the end of the wedding reception, Rob and I
thought about doing a slow dance together, but we
decided not to cause too much of a spectacle just yet. I
promised my mom earlier that day that I wouldn’t do
anything drastic like propose, as has become cliché from

I have been dating this guy for one year, and out of the
blue he suddenly says he doesn’t have time to invest to
a committed relationship. I am not one to invest time in
people, especially if I am involved with a person that is
my f*ck. But this guy got me emotionally, and now after a
year I am left feeling totally empty. He stole my heart and
made me believe that there is hope in a gay relationship.
Most fags just want to get a f*ck for the night. I thought I
was like that too, but I love him and want more. What do
I do?

Dear Lost,
What the hell are you bitching about? You had a relationship for a year, and you’re a gay man. Both of you de-
serve a medal. Most fags would consider that a milestone,
but apparently this is your first love. A first, love is like
fast food – good while it is hot, but when it is cold it can
be hard to digest. Really my dear, look at it this way – you
had a good run for this show; now it’s time for the next
one. I say get pretty and get laid. Don’t waste your time
on some guy who apparently isn’t emotionally available.
Now get back out there and find your true love. Because
this one ain’t it. No man is worth the pain. People can
only hurt you if you let them. This Queen says, “Move on
and get over it.” So many men…. Don’t let this one spoil
your party!

The Importance of Queer Media

In our increasingly electronic and information-laden world, communication within our
respective communities is crucial. One of the
ways this has long been accomplished is by
various media.
Since the start of the modern queer movement, periodicals such as newsletters and community newspapers and
magazines have played a crucial role in disseminating
information to members of our communities and serving
as forums for discussions about the key issues of the day.
In recent years we have increasingly seen and heard a
gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans presence on television
and radio as well as on the Internet.
As a long time freelance writer for a variety of gay, gay/
lesbian, and queer periodicals, and as the producer and
host of Speak Sebastian, one of the three queer shows
currently airing over CJSW FM 90.9, I have long had a
special place in my heart and soul for queer media. To
me, such media fills a crucial need within our community
and plays an important role in the forming, and maintaining, of community.
The idea of “community” doesn’t just emerge full-blown,
like Athena from the head of Zeus – it takes time to build,
nurture, develop, and mature. It is no surprise to anyone
that our community, and the values, ethos, and ideals it
represents, is frequently under attack. Our media help
us give voice to the fight back and help us maintain some
equilibrium in an often too-hostile world.
Within the pages of a magazine like this one, we see
ourselves, and our lives, reflected. As we listen to Dykes
On Mykes, Speak Sebastian, or Urban Sex, we can hear
music that is by us and for us and about us, others of our
tribe talking and discussing issues of importance to us,
challenging us to think outside of the heterosexual box
we were all raised in and start to maybe approach issues
and our lives from a perspective more true to who we are.
As we watch characters on shows airing over Pride TV or
even Showcase, we recognize ourselves, or at least our
friends. As we open the pages of a novel written by an
openly gay or lesbian author we fall into a world that is
more ours, sometimes, than the world that actually surrounds us.
Those involved in queer media took a huge step in creating that media, even still. Certainly the idea of creating

a gay and lesbian media culture was revolutionary even
just 20 years ago.
It is easy to take this magazine, or any of the other
media within our communities, for granted. And perhaps that is a good thing; it is now so ingrained and so
prevalent that we no longer need to always remember how
special our media are.
Much of our media is volunteer-driven. Certainly locally
it is. Independent media rarely has access to the huge
amounts of operational monies other media enjoy. Those
of us involved in queer media are involved because of a
sense of commitment, a sense of dedication to the need
to inform and entertain our community. Many of us are
information fetishists, anyway. I know I am…
So as you read this, or any other gay, lesbian, bisexual,
and/or trans periodical, remember what a treasure you

is just the way things are; our media is about us and deserves our support.
Stephen Lock is the Regional Director for Egale Canada and
the Calgary Representative for The Canadians For Equal Marriage
Coalition. He is also the producer and host of a semi-monthly glbt
radio show, Speak Sebastian, airing at 9pm on the 1st and 3rd
Wednesday of the month on CJSW FM 90.9.

It’s inescapable. For 10 days every July hundreds of thousands of people descend upon
the Stampede Grounds in Victoria Park. “The
Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth” hits town
and everywhere you look it’s denim jeans
and cowboy hats. Since 1886, when Calgary
hosted its first agricultural fair, things have
grown into what you see today. The Stampede
provides something for everyone, whether you
are a thrill seeker looking to ride the rides,

What is the Stampede Board?
The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede has a Board of
Directors that is made up of 25 leaders from the Calgary
community. This group of volunteers guides the direction of the not-for-profit Calgary Exhibition & Stampede
organization.

What is the Stampede Board’s involvement with the
Stampede?
We welcome employment and volunteer interest
throughout the year.
The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede operates on a yearround basis, providing facilities and outstanding event
staff who help the community host a variety of commerce,
entertainment, sporting, and social activities. The organization also operates a working ranch that raises bucking
stock for the Calgary Stampede, as well as other rodeos
throughout North America. Horse racing is available
throughout the year and the province’s only non-privately
owned Casino contributes $10 million a year to 173 local
charities.
You are a non-profit organization. Explain how that
applies to the board.
What is your selection process for members?
We are governed by a 25 member Board of Directors,
including 20 members elected from shareholders, three
appointed by the City of Calgary, one appointed by the
Province of Alberta and the immediate Past-President.
The Board also has the discretion to appoint up to four
Directors from the community for one-year terms. Directors are not paid for their service to the organization.
Shareholders are volunteers who cannot receive any dividends, nor can their shares appreciate. Volunteers are
eligible to become shareholders after four years of service
within the organization. Currently, over 2000 community
members volunteer with the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede.
How can someone become involved with the Stam-

Explain what it takes to put together “The Greatest
Outdoor Show on Earth.” To many, the Stampede is
simply 10 days of rides, cowboy hats and rodeo, but
obviously there is much more to it than the average
person sees. From booking acts for concerts at the
Coca-Cola Stage and Nashville North to coordinating the rides and concessions. I suspect it requires a
great deal of effort. How far ahead do you plan each
year’s stampede, and tell me about what the board
does.
We successfully operate this organization 365 days a
year because of the dedication of more than 1,500 part
and full time professional staff that work year round and
the additional 3,000 staff that are hired for the Calgary
Stampede each July. Additionally, more than 2,200
enthusiastic Stampede volunteers work to educate, celebrate, entertain and welcome fellow Albertans and new
friends from around the globe. Our volunteer program
is one of the largest in Canada, with over 50 committees

dedicated to organizing events and promoting agriculture,
Western Heritage and the Stampede throughout the year.
What does the Stampede mean to the city of Calgary?
The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede is a community
asset. In 1901, the Calgary Agricultural Society sold
Victoria Park back to the City of Calgary. We now lease
this property from the city of Calgary and are committed
to managing and protecting this historic site on behalf of
all Calgarians. Revenue is also used for improvement and
additions to the Park and its facilities.
How does the Stampede affect Calgary’s tourism
industry?
Each year the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede generates more than $270 million dollars in economic activity.
The Stampede could be considered by many to be
a “straight” event. What sort of activities do you feel
the Gay & Lesbian community can be involved with
and enjoy?
The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede is an organization
that celebrates diversity in our community. We welcome
people of all backgrounds and we commit every year to
fulfill the “needs of Calgary and Southern Alberta”. We
wish to be inclusive to anyone that encounters us – at any
time of the year. The Calgary Stampede has shown its
commitment to this by becoming a partner in the “Everyone Belongs” initiative led by the DDRC.
What is new with this year’s event?
Eye Reckon Freedom Ride – Texan, James E. (Hoot)
Gibson and his three companions, Mark Andrews (assistant), Kevin Juno (cook) and Mary Schenk (trip manager)
started an epic 4,000-kilometre trail ride on January
20th. Just like so many great cattle drives of the 1880s,
they started from Bandera, Texas, a town that has been
called “the cowboy capital of the world”. After crossing
the American / Canadian Border on Sunday, June 20th,
Hoot and his group will arrive in Calgary on Thursday,
July 8 – Sneak A Peek. Look for them in the Calgary
Stampede Parade the following morning (July 9th).
New York Stock Exchange, Closing of the day – On
Friday, July 9th, the New York Stock Exchange, the Calgary Stampede and our superstar bull “Outlaw” will close
the day at the exchange in a way the financial world will
never forget! During a live simulcast from the Stampede
Rodeo, we will salute the 19 Alberta companies listed on
the NYSE. Then, at 2 pm sharp, a chute will burst open,
releasing Outlaw, which will trigger the closing bell on the
trading floor in New York. It gives a whole new meaning
to the term “bull market”!
Burnco Calgary Marathon – On Sunday July 10th,
the Calgary Stampede will host 7,000 participants in the
Burnco Calgary Marathon. It is our pleasure to welcome
10
participants who will run through Stampede Park as well
as Downtown Calgary and the Calgary Zoo along their
42.2 kilometer course.
$1 Million Rodeo – This year, the Calgary Stampede will
take professional rodeo to a new level as we offer the first
million-dollar regular rodeo season purse. The world’s top
cowboys will be competing for prize money second only to
the National Finals Rodeo.
World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition – A
record number of contestants from close to 25 countries
will be at the Calgary Stampede to participate in the 25th
Anniversary of the World Championship Blacksmiths’
competition. We are welcoming blacksmiths from Denmark, South Africa, Venezuela, Sweden, the United Arab
Emirates and other corners of the globe.
What other activities is the Stampede involved with
throughout the year?
The park welcomes another 1 million visitors to over
450 agricultural, social, sporting and corporate-related
events throughout the year. These include 66 trade and
consumer shows that bring Calgary consumers and businesses together with local, national, and international
exhibitors and buyers to generate a significant economic
benefit.
The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede remains a steadfast
partner to Alberta’s agriculture community in celebrating
and supporting that industry’s remarkable and enduring
economic and cultural contribution. More than 500 were
showcased at our cattle shows that attracted 56,000 visitors from across Southern Alberta.

So much more than a
whips and handcuffs store.

You definitely know you are walking into
a different kind of store when you step
through the doors of B&D Emporium’s new
location on 17th avenue. As you take in
the red walls and unique decorations, one
of the first things that catch your eye is a
cage containing two white-sided geckos.
It’s a distinctive set up for a very distinctive
store. Owner Christine Baker sat down with
gaycalgary.com a month after opening to reflect on the past, present, and future of B&D
Emporium.
Things have come a long way from the early years of B&D.
When the business originally opened, it was located in
the old Ayleth Lodge in Ogden, out of the way and hidden from the general public. From there, it moved to 4th
Street and 8th Avenue, next to where the Calgary Eagle is
now located, which was it’s home for six years before the
recent move.
The current location is on one of the main retail districts of downtown, resulting in many new people walking
in the door, as well as customers who frequented the old
location stopping in to check it out.
“Most of our old customers are quite pleased that we
are down here. The walk in traffic we have been seeing is
phenomenal. Our former location had no walk in traffic;
it was destination only. It has been a dramatic increase, a
lot more people have been in the store, and hopefully that
will result in more dollars generated. We’ve had people
walk in and be totally thrilled to find a shop like ours
move to a main drag, that we’ve ‘Spiced up the Avenue.’”
The staff enjoys having first-timers in the store. The
results at times can be quite hysterical. “The first level is
mostly clothing; it’s on the dark side, but it is still tame.
We don’t have the fashion colours that are prevalent –
we’ve stayed pretty true to our course and always said we
were going to be a fetish type of store. When we send them
upstairs where we have the leather, latex and edgier types
of products, some people are
absolutely shocked, almost
horrified. We get a bit of a
chuckle when people go upstairs and come right back
down. Sometimes we send
people upstairs knowing
full well it isn’t their cup of
tea. The point of that is even
though it may not be their
cup of tea, if they are talking
to some friends and say ‘I
was in the weirdest store on
17th Avenue’ and tell them
what the store is like, and
the person they are talking
to is in to different fetishes,
they may be interested. Tell
as many people as you can,
and they will tell two friends,
and so on.”
Baker and her former
business partner were also
successful for the wildly
popular “Bizarre Ball” that
ran for a number of consecutive years. It was a chance
for people to let their kinky
side out while giving back to the community.
“When my ex partner and I broke up the business,
Bizarre Ball was supposed to go by the wayside. She has
decided to continue with the name. I did the bondage, discipline and fetish bizarre a couple of years ago, and all of
the money that was raised after expenses went to charity.
It cost $5,000 to put the show on, and we sold $10,500 in
tickets. I was in New York a week after 9/11 and decided
when I was there to do the show, so we contacted the
United Way and donated $4,500, $1,000 of which stayed
in Calgary and $3,500 went to the 9/11 relief fund. We
also donated $1,000 to Beswick House. We are thinking
of doing shows again on a smaller scale; it won’t be called
the Bizarre Ball, and you will know it is me because it will
say B&D Emporium on it. If I am involved in something
my name is on it; if you don’t see B&D Emporium, I am
not involved.”
It’s not always easy to help out. When offering money
B&D has, surprisingly, been met with resistance from
some groups.
“Early on we tried to do things with some other organizations, but they seemed to think that they didn’t want
their name associated with where the money was coming from. It was interesting the conflicts with well-known
charities; I guess all of those groups had enough food and
money that they didn’t need
ours. That may in part stem
from the misconception that
S&M is abuse, so something
like the Bizarre Ball, it was
felt it promoted abuse to
women. So we have concentrated on the United Way
and Beswick House. We are
also involved with the rodeo
and the court, depending on
what it is we try to support
where we can.”
There is a common
misconception that B&D
Emporium is strictly whips,
chains and leather. That is
a part of their inventory, but
they offer much more.
“On the main floor we
have our clothing – it is all
trendy lines like Lip Service
and Sourpuss and Lucky13.
We carry shoes like Underground and are working
on getting other boots and
shoes in here. The main
floor is very trendy, but we
do have a bit of edgy stuff,
like some beautiful maid

outfits that fit anyone from a small girl to a very large
gay. Upstairs we have our leather products- restraints,
slings, swings, masks, whips, harnesses, cuffs, etc. We
have a guy who makes iron products, like restraint chairs,
spanking benches, and cages. We have latex product lines
from Europe.”
Much of the leather inventory is custom made.
“We have a set stock of things we keep in, and if I am
feeling particularly inventive, I will try and dream up
something new. We also do special orders; we will make
collars, cuffs, and harnesses, anything that customer’s
want. We had a gal come in that was having a hard time
finding the right kind of belt, so we made it for her. We try
to accommodate people as much we can.”
B&D has also started something new, offering “previously loved” fetish gear that has been thoroughly cleaned
and reconditioned, allowing those who may be interested
in such outfits but unwilling to part with what can be a
pricey investment to explore their kinky side.
“When I was in San Francisco years ago, there was a
company that specialized in previously enjoyed leather
and latex. If someone has outgrown their gear and it is
still in good shape, but they don’t know what to do with
it, they can bring it down here, and we can sell it consignment or sometimes buy it outright. We just bought
a number of items, like a latex straightjacket, chaps and
pants. We also bought leather shorts, chaps, coats and
pants. I am also looking for military uniforms and boots of
any type in good shape. It results in substantial discounts
for our clients who may want to wear latex or leather but
can’t afford to buy new.”
With the stores new beginning, it’s the perfect time for
those who have never walked through its doors to visit its
comfortable and casual shopping environment.
“I am not moving again if I can help it. I would like to
see the business really take off, so I can spend more time
away from work instead of here six or seven days a week.
It would be interesting to have a life outside of work. I
want to invite everyone down to the store. We are planning on a grand opening, although we haven’t set a date.
Keep your eyes out for a show in the not-to-distant show
as well. Come on down and enjoy B&D Emporium.”
So stop in at B&D Emporium, you may be pleasantly
surprised with what you discover.

Traditional Rodeo Events: (Competitive)
All-Around Cowboy & All Around Cowgirl
– awarded to male and female competitors with
highest all-around scores from other events.
Bareback Bronc Riding – contestants must stay
on a wildly bucking horse for 6 seconds, without
the benefit of reins, saddle, or stirrups. They
may choose to use 1 or 2 hands for grip.
between two barrels, grabbing a flag from the
far barrel and firmly planting it in the closer one.
Pole Bending – tests a contestants ability to
control a horse as they must weave in and out
through 6-foot poles spaced 21 feet apart.
Team Roping – time trial where two contestants
rope fully grown cattle. One contestant must
rope the head, while the other ropes the hind
legs.
Wild Steer Riding – very similar to Bull Riding
except done on young cows (traditionally Steer
are used, however the CRIR does things a bit
differently as proper Steer are unavailable).
Camp Events: (Humorous)
Goat Dressing – two-person event exclusive to
gay rodeo. An Official holds a tethered goat
while two contestants race to it, dress it in a
pair of jockey-type underwear, and race back to
the start line.
Steer Decorating – contestants must rope a steer
and coax it across a ten foot line before tying
a ribbon on it’s tail. The event has a 2 minute
time limit.
Contestants Meeting (10am)
The Wild Drag Race – involves two teams of
contestants, each consisting of a man, woman,
and Drag Queen. The teams must goad their
steer over the 70 foot line before the Drag
Queen can mount it and ride it back.

(known as “dogging”).

Scott Rogers presents disrupted visual narratives
that trace the artist’s day to day interactions
with the city and events. The various images
reference the pragmatic aspects of culture
(sequential time, bus schedules, urban
planning) as well as surreal life experiences.
Each piece can be read singularly, but bears
relationship to the others through the structure
that encompasses them.

In a series of photographs and performances,
Wildrick explores the ambigious relationship
between Canada and the United States. Duo

Vicious Circle
Sinfully Good

For more than 11 years, 11th Avenue’s Vicious Circle has provided an alternative and
unique atmosphere for Calgary’s downtown
community. Sporting a casual atmosphere
with comfortable couches, local artwork
(which is for sale), pool tables and creative
lighting, Vicious Circle has become a popular meeting place for gay and straight people
alike.
You know that you are in a different place when you
walk in the door and are handed your menu, which is a
large metal sheet with menu items printed on both sides.
After perusing the available selections, we settled on the
“Killer” Nachos and the swammi chicken.
The Nacho’s come with either a tangy salsa or topped
with homemade chili. The dish is very colourful, consisting of blue and yellow corn chips with big chunks of
tomato, ample peppers and green onions. The cheese is
layered, which is a sign of truly great Nacho’s, as opposed
to the more common topping of cheese and nothing but
dry chips by the time you reach the middle. The chili is
very thick and hearty; you can scoop it up with the chips.
The chili can also be ordered on its own to warm you up!
The swammi chicken is cooked in a sweet Indonesian
soy sauce and comes with peanut dip and garlic bread.
The two flavors blend well to create a unique taste sensation. The swammi chicken can also be ordered as topping
for salad, which is a healthy and tasty way to enjoy it.
In addition, Vicious Circle has a number of other appetizers such as the highly recommended Spinach and
Artichoke Dip, Perogies, Shrimp cocktail, Potstickers and
many other snacks.
For the main course, we selected one representative of
each of the main choices: Melts, Pizza, and Pasta.
The Steak Melt, consisting of large slices of sirloin
steak, onions, tomatoes and mushrooms with a touch of
BBQ sauce and covered in cheese, is served open-faced
on herb bread. It requires a fork and knife to eat it, but
it is worth the effort. There is just enough BBQ sauce to
enhance the flavor, but it doesn’t overpower the rest of the
food or make the sandwich overly sloppy. You can also
order melts with chicken or Spolumbo’s sausage. There

are a couple of choices of sides, and I choose the French
Onion Soup. It was an amazing choice, as the soup is very
flavourful and lacks the overly salty taste that this type of
soup sometimes has. The red onion and sherry broth is
topped with lots of gooey provolone, mozza and cheddar
and served in a classic soup bowl. I especially liked the
blend of cheeses, which was a very tasty touch.
The Pepperoni Pizza, on a flatbread “coyote” crust is
crunchy and has ample toppings. Rather then the traditional round pie, all of the pizza’s are served on square
flatbread with tomato sauce and mozzarella. It’s a tasty
treat to either share or have for yourself. Check out the
variety of different pizzas – three of them are chicken.
The jambalaya comes in a large serving and is quite
tasty. Vicious Circle mixes cajun spices, tomatoes, onions,
green peppers and Spolumbo’s sausage and tosses it with
cavatelli pasta spirals. Although it doesn’t have the addition of shrimp and chicken like many jambalayas, the
delicious sausage compensates for it. If jambalaya isn’t
your cup of tea, try the Linguini, Shrimp and Pesto Pasta,
or Kung-pow Chicken. Also highly recommended is the
Super Macaroni and Cheese, which is a different twist on
the traditional dish and sounds quite appealing.
Vicious Circle has 140 different varieties of Martini’s.
You could spend quite a bit of time trying to decide be-
tween drinks like “Captain America”, “Bloody Mess”, “Jennifer Love Hewitt”, “Naked Boy”, “Christmas”, “Dirty Girl”,
“Disco Stu”, “Caramilk”, “Windex” or the “Peanut Butter
and Jelly.” If those seem a little unique for your tastes,
Vicious Circle also has mainstream martini’s like Bellinis,
Fuzzy Navels and the traditional style.
We capped off the meal with Cupid’s Chocolate Cheesecake and the Double-chocolate Banana Cake. The cheesecake is a chocolate lovers dream: chocolate crust, chocolate cheesecake and a thin layer of chocolate ice cream.
It is like velvet, with a smooth creamy taste with the
strawberry tawny port sauce enhancing the flavor. The
banana cake is evil, and should come with a warning for
consumers about how addictive it is. Imagine your mom’s
banana bread, add chunks of white and dark chocolate,
and butter crème icing, topped with dark chocolate icing
and caramel sauce, and you have this treat. A unique dessert for a unique café. You can also try their apple crisp,
berry cheesecake, and their famous monster chocolate
chip cookie.
Vicious Circle is a bit pricier then some other establishments, but the food quality is second to none. The ambiance is very unique and ideal to bring a date to or hang
out with friends. Whether for coffee and dessert or a full
on meal, Vicious Circle is worth a visit.
