14th UK show we have gathered over 150 exhibitors – artisans to
corsetières, silversmiths to toy makers – with a veritable treasure
trove of products to inspire and delight. Where better to buy
gorgeous gifts for that special person in your life – or to treat
yourself? To entertain you, we have flown in the undisputed Queen
of Burlesque, Dita Von Teese from Los Angeles, The Tiffany Show
from Thailand and two gorgeous male dance troupes – The Dream
Boys and The Fantasy Boys. (If I’ve learnt nothing else – it’s that you
have to please the ladies!) I hope you enjoy the show.

belts and ‘50s-style seamed and heeled stockings. You’ll

and a fur-trimmed jacket or wrap to get you to the party...
Yes, yes, we can do all of these and more.
If shopping wears you out, grab a coffee and enjoy our
articles: let me tell you about the fascinating history of the

Erotica announce Terrence
Higgins Trust as charity partner
rotica 2006 has signed the Terrence Higgins
Trust (THT) as its flagship charity partner for
this year’s show at Olympia. Terrence Higgins
Trust is the leading HIV and AIDs charity in the
UK, and the largest in Europe.

Erotica 2006 is promoting a core message of safe
and respectful sex and deems it essential to have a
high profile charity on board to show how seriously it
takes this message. Erotica is also keen to adopt a
corporate social responsibility culture and hopes to
generate significant donations for THT throughout
the partnership which runs from September until the
end of the year.
As part of the agreement, the THT logo features
on all of Erotica 2006 outdoor and tube advertising,
its involvement with the show has been promoted on
Virgin Radio (the show’s official media partner) and
THT is holding a collection throughout the show.
Speaking about the partnership, Erotica’s Brand
Marketing Manager Tracey Farrow said, “Terrence

rotica were delighted to have Virgin Radio as our media partner in the
run up to this year’s show. In our drive to recruit ‘Erotica Virgins’ Virgin
Radio promoted Erotica during their popular ‘Geoff Show’ – particularly in the
Dirty Book at Bedtime segment which featured erotic readings from books sent in
by listeners from 10pm Mondays to Thursdays. Listeners who tuned in could win
free tickets to Erotica.

Race For Life
Getting Sweaty for Charity
O
n Saturday 8th July, Team Erotica broke
sweat to raise money for a good cause. The
charity of choice was Cancer Research UK, whose
Race for Life events are held all across the UK.
Representing Team Erotica were Tracey (right),
our Brand Marketing Manager, and Susanna and
Carol our PR gurus from Limelight PR. Team Erotica
completed a 5km run at London’s Regent’s Park,
raising an impressive £3100! The girls would like to
say thank you very much to all their sponsors.
The UK’s leading cancer charity, Cancer Research UK has a dedicated team
of 3,000 scientists and an annual scientific spend of around £213 million. Its

EuroPride Festival, London
n impressive 600,000 people came together to celebrate Pride in
London on Saturday 1st July. Hosted by a different European city each
year, EuroPride is a premier gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and cultural
festival that strives towards achieving equality.

Pride in Brighton & Hove
o on Saturday 5th August we boarded our topless bus again and headed
for the seaside to Pride in Brighton and Hove. Preston Park played host
to this annual free summer festival bringing thousands of people together for
hours and hours of fun and entertainment.

For those of you who don’t know, Pride in Brighton & Hove promotes equality
and diversity and advances education to eliminate discrimination against the
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. Once again, Team
Erotica had a fabulous time mingling and giving away over 6000 Erotica Goody Bags.
We wanted to take the time to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to
say hello and show such positive support for the Erotica brand and our mission to
raise awareness of and encourage safe sex and respect – you guys made Pride

Pucker Up
Safe Sex Initiative Launched
on National Kissing Day
ational Kissing Day on 6th July was
chosen to launch Erotica’s initiative to
raise awareness of safer sex. On that night
40,000 Erotica branded condoms were distributed
in leading night clubs around the country.
The club promotion was launched off the back of a recent report
from the Department of Health that revealed a three per cent rise in cases of
sexual infections last year – the most at risk group being of clubbing age.
Speaking about the initiative, Brand Marketing Manager Tracey Farrow says, “The rise
of teenage pregnancies, STIs and unprotected sex in UK has reached a disturbing all-time
high and we, at Erotica 2006, want to communicate safe and respectful sex. The focus of
the show this year is to shake preconceptions and demonstrate that sex is anything but
sleazy. We want to promote safe and respectful sex while encouraging visitors to introduce
more fun, intimacy and spice into their love lives. The launch of our new website reflects

Last year the UK introduced civil partnerships which, together with the repeal
of Section 28, same-sex adoption and equal age of consent, represents a further
step on the road towards a fairer society. But with some way still to go, Pride
London is committed to tackling bullying, discrimination and homophobic issues.
To demonstrate our support Team Erotica drove our topless Erotica Bus to the
heart of the festivities in Soho Square. There, kitted out in tu-tus and armed with
Erotica merchandise and thousands of goody bags, we had a fabulous time. The
day was a scorcher and the energy exceptional. Some of us hit the dance floor to
share the love and enjoy the pumping music. We did not want the day to end!

he word ‘garter’ today conjures for most people two
opposing images. On the one hand a bride dressed in
voluptuous layers of virginal white, and on the other a
scantily-clad erotic dancer gyrating close enough to her
audience for them to slip money beneath her garter (for
lack of enywhere else to put it!). If we delve back through time we find
that these two extremes have much in common. For the garter – this
tiniest slip of feminine apparel – encircles a most fascinating secret.
Elastic is a modern invention. Traditional garters were long strips
of cloth or leather that were tied around the leg or buckled, either
above or below the knee, to hold up one’s stockings. They were worn
by both sexes in days when stockings were the norm – but a
woman’s garter has long been held to have magical properties.

In England in the fourteenth century, a man declared his intentions to
his sweetheart with the gift of a garter. Symbolising the lady’s virginity
and betrothal, the garter was worn at the marriage ceremony and
later removed by the groom and passed to the required witnesses,
waiting by the foot of the bed, to show to the wider wedding party as
proof that the marriage had been consummated. Drunken guests
occasionally disturbed the proceedings in an attempt to obtain the
magical garter, or a piece of the bride’s dress which was also
considered lucky and so was often ripped to pieces. Far from merely
a ‘throw away’ tradition, the tossing of the garter evolved to protect
the privacy of the bride and groom on their wedding night.

The oldest and highest order of knighthood, The Most Noble Order of
the Garter, was founded by King Edward III in 1348. The story goes,
that while dancing at a ball in Calais in France, the young Countess of
Salisbury, a favourite of the kings, accidentally dropped her garter on
wedding customs have roots that are much
older.
• SOMETHING OLD
The ‘something old’ referred to in the
rhyme above, was often represented by an
old garter, given to the bride by an older,
happily married woman in the hope that it
would pass on similar joy to the new
relationship. This in turn may have
stemmed from the pagan tradition of a
retiring priestess giving (some believe
‘tossing’) her garter to her successor. In
this sense the garter also symbolises the
passing of a sacred feminine knowledge

In Roman times it was believed that a young
bride was vulnerable prey for malevolent
spirits. So the bride wore a veil as a disguise
and she and her bridesmaids wore similar
dresses to confuse any evil intentions.

Usually something of value from the bride’s
family – this must be returned after the
wedding to ensure the couple’s prosperity.
• SOMETHING BLUE
This custom dates back to ancient Israel
where brides wore blue ribbons in their hair
to represent their fidelity.
• CONFETTI
In Italy it is traditional to throw sweets
(confetti) over newlyweds. In Britain rice or
seeds were thrown in the hope the couple
would always to eat well. “May you never
hunger” is still a popular pagan blessing.

the dancefloor and was overcome with confusion. Galant King Edward
scooped up the garter and tied it to his own leg, uttering the words,
‘Honi soit qui mal y pense’ or ‘Shame to those who think evil of it’
(which became the motto of the Order).
The lady’s embarrassment was caused, not by a fashion faux pas,
but because the garter was a badge of rank for a high priestess of the
old religion. At that time the Roman Catholic church’s persecution of
heretics and witches was well under way and this public revelation
placed the Countess in grave danger.
King Edward’s public demonstration of protection was reinforced
by his swift formation of an order of 24 Knights – 12 knights headed
by the King himself and 12 knights headed by his son, The Black
Prince. Modelled on King Arthur’s Round Table, the Order took
chivalry to heart, promising to protect and do honour to ladies.
Reflecting a pagan order in number – 12 members plus one leader or
god, Edward effectively created two symbolic royal covens (13 x 2
being the number of a grand coven) and placed himself in the position
of God incarnate. Whether Edward’s intention was to garner popular
support among his pagan subjects, or to make a stand against the
Catholic church – or both – is open to debate.
Today the Queen and The Prince of Wales head the Order and the
Garter appears on their respective coats of arms. Garter Knights and
Ladies are chosen by the Queen to honour their service in public
office. Many have served as Prime Minister including: Sir Winston
Churchill, Sir Edward Heath, Sir Harold Wilson, Sir John Major and
Baroness Thatcher. The core members are restricted to 24, but most
of the immediate Royal Family have been admitted to the Order as
‘Royal Knights or Ladies’ and foreign Kings, such as Juan Carlos of
Spain and Harald V of Norway are admitted as ‘Stranger Knights’.
There have been strong associations between the Order and
Freemasonry. Queen Victoria’s third son; Prince Arthur, was a Knight
of the Garter who also served as Grand Master of the United Grand
Lodge of England for many years. I wonder how many of today’s

here’s no substitute for a pair of obscenely high killer
heels – and we’re not talking about 3" or 4" heels, nor
platforms, block heels or wedges – but pure spiky
Stilettos. Whether you wear them or just admire them;
stiletto heels are an iconic image. The steeper the heel,
the more empowered you’ll feel. If you’re prepared to accept at
least 5" (in heels that is!) here’s my guide to remaining standing.
Size is all-important. If you have small feet, shoe size 4 or 5 say,
5" heels may be your limit. But if you are a size 6 or over, a 6" heel
is possible. With heels this high you will probably need to buy a
half size or possibly a size larger than you normally wear.
It’s not the pain and discomfort that governs your maximum
heel height – it’s a matter of balance. Without trying to compensate
(contort yourself) your natural centre of gravity needs to be within
the ‘footprint’ of the shoe – or you’ll fall over just standing still.
If you’re not used to extremely high heels – then build up your
confidence (and height) at home over short periods. I simply love

6" heels, but there are pros and cons to the different styles when it
comes to stepping out in them for a whole day.
Let’s start with strappy sandals – these are my favourite style.
With any mini dress, strappy 5" or 6" heels epitomise summer
sexiness or party girl – but at a price. Heels on stiletto sandals tend
to have a springing flexibility that makes it difficult to maintain your
balance and poise. When walking you can feel the sole and heel
literally springing back. After a few hours you tend to lose stability.
This is a slow progressive feeling, as is the pain of the thin straps
cutting in! To survive long spells without changing heels, look for
sandals with a slight platform – just 1⁄2" (10mm) is all that is needed.
This reduces much of the springing effect in the heel. Look for
straps that are wide enough to comfortably secure without cutting
in. And consider styles of sandals that have a little more body – an
enclosed toe perhaps.

them up gives a tremendous feeling of support and comfort – and

stiletto boots are incredibly sexy to wear. But their support can be
short lived, as after a few hours you suddenly find your ankles
giving way. I think at first your ankles compensate until they tire.
So make sure boots fit perfectly and don’t distort your natural poise.
Thigh high boots can become a little wearing on your knees if you
need to keep sitting down. (As if an excuse was needed to stay
standing upright and showing off your deadly heels.)
Strappy stiletto shoes or court shoes are my answer. Extremely
sexy but with more support and less ‘spring’ than sandals. Team
them with a micro mini skirt to give power dressing a whole new
outlook – for me my perfect uniform. I find tights are best with
these heels and a design with an ankle strap helps stability
enormously. Based upon the success of these – I have also tried
sling backs, but these only work when you are bare-legged.
My key points to look out for: – keep within your balance;
choose wide straps; avoid the springing effect and anything that
pinches around your toes. For court shoes, tights or stockings can
help avoid any rubbing, but you may find your foot sliding down the
sole making the pressure on your toes more painful. Don’t teeter
before you can walk – work up in heel size. If you're entirely new to
heels start with 4" or 41⁄2" before venturing higher.
Okay, you’ve got the heels and the attitude (altitude). Take
controlled steps – do not just teeter. Avoid uneven surfaces.
Beware of shiny, slippery floors. Walk slowly, in deliberate short
strides, one foot in line in front of the other – imagine you are

to remember is that BDSM relationships are
built on trust. Masters, mistresses

en and women in our culture like to
profess their independence while, at the
same time, our culture seems obsessed
with mass-production, square holes, and
general sameness. Women should be a
size 10 and men should look a “certain” way in their

Claire
de Lune
Vision
Mandala
isionary artist, Claire de Lune studied at Harrow
School of Art and graduated with a BA (Hons) in
Graphic Design. She spent the remainder of the
‘80s boom years working in London design
studios, but became disillusioned with the
excesses of the big city and quit design to embark on an
adventure.
After travelling extensively, she returned to London. She
studied physical and alternative therapies; anatomy and physiology;
hypnotherapy and trance work techniques; worked with homeless
communities and chaotic drug users; and became a sexual health
specialist working with the capital’s sex workers. Claire says of her
work and her inspirations:
“I have worked with men and women from around the world, in
London and in Africa, who are involved in the sex industry…and on
that journey have learnt much about the light and the dark of the
human condition. In generously sharing their life stories and
experiences with me, the men and women I have worked with have
enriched both my own life journey, and my understanding of human
sexuality and desire. The erotic art that I create is a celebration of
our bodies and of our spirits…and of the healing potential inherent
within the joyful union of male and female forces.
“Having returned to the life of the full-time Artist, I now work in
splendid isolation perched on top of a beautiful and ancient hill-side,
where I draw upon my varied life experiences…and weave them
together with my love of sacred geometry, symmetry, myth and

art intended to stimulate sexual
desire’ and as such is often
labelled as crude. Certainly, some
pieces do raise eyebrows, but
others are simply stunning examples of
artists’ studies in love and appreciation of the
human form expressed in watercolour, oil,
pencil, photography or sculpture.
The Guild of Erotic Artists was formed in
2002 to act as a platform for artists of erotic
work to interact with each other and the
public. The Guild promotes a more tolerant
appreciation of the human body with a
perennial exhibition of erotic art by both new
and established artists. This non-profit making
movement of motivated artists has grown
steadily since and now boasts 160 members.
The Guild’s home – once a 15th century
monastery in the Hertfordshire countryside –
is now an open plan art gallery and interactive
working space called Beaumont Hall Studios.
Twenty five artists exhibit there at any one
time. Works include oils, watercolours, pencil
drawings, bodycasts, stone and bronze

public can meet the artists and their models and are
encouraged to participate. The Guild also takes their
show ‘on the road’ regularly attending exhibitions –
Erotica being the largest for erotic art in this country.
The energy and enthusiasm created by The Guild
members, is infectious. Recent TV shoots for Granada
‘Men & Motors’ and Playboy TV in the USA show how
enthusiastic they are. Live demonstrations are informal
yet powerful, electric but always focused. A show
within a show – they are not to be missed. Using their
own models, the artists become showmen as they
feature bodycasting, photography, sketches and
painting. You will not see this at the Tate Gallery!

We caught up with the man responsible, Dave
Ayerst Davies and asked him about his life and
work.
Born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1956, Dave has a
BSc in Physics and Electronics from Brunel
University. His specialist photographic areas are:
motorsports, fashion, glamour and art-nudes. He
is a PADI qualified diver prepared to shoot
underwater to a depth of 18m. He has become an
expert in image retouching and pre-print
processing with Adobe Photoshop. He also
designs websites and does some communications
and software consultancy.
‘My aim is to capture images that provoke
thought as well as please the eye. I tend to prefer
simplicity of subject and background. Monochrome
images have a timeless atmosphere. Colour is
often a distraction from the subject. Black and
white images give the emphasis to form. Light and
shade define shapes rather than hue. I prefer
natural/available light if possible. It gives a more
real and natural result. And being outdoors
inspires me. When I’m travelling I can’t pass a
beautiful background without imagining a

gorgeous model in the foreground. Nature
provides us with beauty in landscape, light and
the curves of the human body. The less
technology you add to that the better.
‘Motorsport is a real passion for me. My first
serious photography was documenting my
brother’s motorsport career in the 70s. My sports
photography trained me to work fast and keep a
momentum going in the studio or on location. The
swooping lines of racecars do echo the curves of
beautiful women, but the technique of shooting
them could not be more different. Motorsports
require you to stand 50 yards from your subject
with a 500mm lens that weighs more than 25lbs
and shoot cars going at speeds of up to 250mph.
It’s a bit like shooting skeet with a rocket launcher.
‘Beautiful women are generally more compliant
and take direction better. The equipment required
is less bulky and the whole experience more
relaxed. I have a few regular models that I’ve built
a rapport with. I love to work with models who are
imaginative – who can take your idea and add
something new. That’s when real magic happens. I
like to start with a small idea and grow it with the
model and the environment.
‘The texture of skin and the quality of light are
completely different underwater. It gives a unique
effect. The body and face are supported

The Housework calendar was produced by London photographer,
Jonathan Bayley. A Member of the British Institute of Professional
Photographers, Bayley runs Urban Photography, based in trendy Spitalfields.
He specialises in photographing athletic men of different ethnic origins for a
number of women’s magazines and leading websites. Urban Photography is
rapidly gaining a reputation as a leading London studio for male photography.
One day during a shoot, a model went to make some coffee and realised
there were no clean cups. So, he started washing up, completely naked – and
the idea for the Housework calendar was born. Sales of the calendar are
supporting leading breast cancer charities. For each copy sold, at least £1 is
donated to charity. Launched at the Autumn Trade Fair, at the NEC in
September, just before Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, the
calendar generated donations of over £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.
