Taking the family name to even greater heights
T
he Real Unplugged Sessions
will be presenting JESSE
CLEGG live and unplugged
at The Venue – Melrose
Arch on Sunday, November 22,
at 7pm. The Real Unplugged Sessions will be taking place every
Sunday during November and into
December at The Venue. These sessions provide a personal setting
where fans can get to know their
favourite artists through their storytelling as well as their songs.
Clegg has been a feature on the
South African pop music landscape
since his 2008 debut album, ‘When
I Wake Up’.
PETER TROMP caught up with
the artist.
When did you first pick up the guitar and started to write songs?
I started playing guitar at 12 years
old, after experimenting with a
number of different instruments
first (piano, drums, sax). It took
me a few years to to get proficient
enough to write my own material,
and so I started working on my own
Jesse Clegg
stuff at around 15 years old.
What do you count among your
most treasured highlights so far
in your career?
There have been so may special moments over the years that its hard
to highlight just one. But these are
some stand-out moments that I remember:
Playing Isle of Wight Festival in the
UK last year
Working with grammy winning producer Dave Bottrill on my last album
Performing at Radio City Music
Hall, New York, for the 46664 Mandela Day
Releasing my new single “Use Me”
and seeing the amazing response
What can audiences look forward
to with your show on Sunday at
Melrose Arch? How does a Jesse
Clegg unplugged concert differ
from a regular Jesse Clegg gig?
It’s an intimate set and it really gives
me a chance to showcase the songwring. I can engage with the audi-
ence in a unique and more personal
way. I do a lot of talking in the set
and explain my writing process and
what inspired me over the years. It’s
also a fantastic experience to perform the set because the acoustic
arrangemnts of the songs are sparse
and the lyrics and melodies are
more exposed – we rely purely on
musicianship and emotion to make
the songs connect.
Has your famous surname been
of benefit to you, or a detriment,
as you’ve navigated your way
through the music industry?
It has been wondeful to have a
mentor that I look up to and who
I can go to for advice and aspire
towards. My dad and I are very
close and supportive of each other.
I never felt any pressure to get into
music.
There has been a challenging aspect
in that people come to my music
with certain preconceptions, but I
think I have managed to avoid the
brunt of it since I am in such a different genre to my father.
What is the choicest advice your
father has imparted on you about
life in the music biz?
Generally to follow my passion and
live a disciplined and meaningful life. Have patience and keep a
strong life of mind.
Last night an album/performance
changed my life...which album/
performance?
Bruce Springsteen performing live
at Isle of Wight Festival in the UK
2012. Best live performance I’ve
ever seen.
Finally, what can we look forward
to from you next?
I’m currently working in studio on
my new album, of which the second
single and music video will be released soon. I’m also about to embark on a national tour in December
along the East and West coast of
SA. Find dates and details at jesseclegg.com.

us and it set the tone for the level
of professionalism and effort that we
would need to put in for the next
few years. I will never forget how expensive Switzerland was and on our
little budget it made for some very
creative meals.
What is your favourite travel destination, and why?
Mauritius - the island is so beautiful
and the resorts are incredible. We’re
actually taking a week off there this
month, staying at the jaw droppingly
amazing LUX La Belle Mare. Can’t
wait to sit back on the beach, sipping cocktails and letting the years
worry’s and stress melt away. It’s the
perfect break to get us ready for the
crazy summer season - a gasp of air
before the storm.
What is the first thing you usually
do when you arrive at your destination and you’re trying to get acclimated?
Check into the hotel, try to hit the
gym if we have time, just to get our
blood flowing again after the flight.
Ask for the Wi-Fi password and catch
up on any social media we’ve missed
out on, log on to TripAdvisor to find
an amazing spot to have dinner and
work on any new songs we have
cooking.
We always try to catch up with the
hotel concierge, find out if there are
any must see spots nearby, and that
we’ll probably only be getting in late
so can we get breakfast sent to our
rooms, and most importantly…a late
checkout.
What was the group’s first international trip, and what do you guys
remember most vividly about the
experience?
We toured to Europe in 2009, visiting Switzerland, The Netherlands and
Ibiza. It was a massive eye opener for

cuisine that you guys have discovered on your travels?
Oooh, there are so many, we love.
Asian food and dim sum are definitely right up there. We’ve had some
pretty amazing meals. There was this
restaurant in Ozlo that we went to
that had the most incredible food.
It’s going to be a hard one to top.
Street food is always on our to do list
- there are some seriously delicious
treats we’ve enjoyed from little kiosks
around the world.
GoodLuck members Ben Peters, Juliet Harding & Matthew O’Connell
What for you guys is usually the
best way to soak up the culture
you’re in?
Hit the streets and walk around. Talking to the locals and our fans to advise what not to miss out on and being open to exploring some of those
slightly dodgy looking restaurants
and shops - we’ve been surprised too
many times now not to give them
the benefit of the doubt. Language

is often tricky and depending which
part of the world you’re in, you need
to be aware of local customs and etiquette. There is nothing worse than
embarrassing yourself by being ignorant…and with Google there really
isn’t any excuse not to know how to
say please and thank you in the local
dialect - it’s the least you can do.
What has been the most amazing
You’ve got exactly R48 in your wallet. Where do GoodLuck go for lunch
in Jozi, and what do you guys have?
Definitely a shisa nyama in Soweto
for meat and pap with spicy chakalaka. Someone’s going to have to
sponsor us a quart, though.
What makes life worth living?
All the F’s, M’s and an E’s: Family,

S
teve Dyer is one of the most
creative lights on the South
African musical landscape
and he has conceived what he
terms a “new world musical,” a bold
story told through music and dance
that celebrates humanity.
There are no spoken words in this
production. The hauntingly beautiful
music created by Dyer and his team
of superb musicians, and the freeflow choreography (by Sonia Radebe
and Nhlanhla Mahlangu) depict the
ebb and flow of the human race.
Adding immeasurably to the evocative mood of the piece are awardwinning Wilhelm Disbergen’s stage
and lighting designs and Naledi
nominee Thando Lobese’s costumes.
So what’s it all about?
The inherent drama comes from
A scene from ‘Colour Me Human’
the music, the visuals and the agility
of the dancers (Thabo Kobeli, Megan
Goliath, Sifiso Mavuso, Thoko Sidiya and Mpotseng “Braven” Nhlapo)
whose movements give body and
shape to the narrative.
Employing a quote from Robert
Sobukwe, in which he believes there
is only one race to which we all belong, and that is the human race,
Dyer has cleverly embraced this idea
to fuel his musical concept.
The atmospheric opening depicts
birth. Imaginative lighting creates the
effect of cells developing into a foetus. Dancer Thabo Kobel, sheathed in
an all-encompassing skin-coloured
costume, emerges as the baby Deo
and we see him quickly develop.
As ‘Colour Me Human’ unfolds,
and Deo finds his feet, the audience
is exposed to the meaning of life in
“The Humper” returns to Jozi for
a series of intimate shows
His name comes from the 19th century Austrian composer who wrote
‘Hansel & Gretel’. His voice comes
from heaven, and he has been a
legend in the international music
industry for the last forty plus years,
with over 150 million records sold.
He has a global fan base of
millions. He is Engelbert Humperdinck and he will be singing his
ever popular hits such as ‘(Please)
Release Me’ and the unforgettable
‘Quando, Quando, Quando’ in Jozi
on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 24 and 25, at the Teatro at
Montecasino. Both shows will start
at 8pm.
The “Engelbert Calling” concerts
offer local fans the opportunity to
enjoy the music of this famous icon
up close and personal as he performs many of his evergreen hits,
such as ‘After The Lovin’, ‘Spanish Eyes’, ‘The Last waltz’, ‘Am I
That Easy To Forget’, ‘There Goes
My Everything’, ‘Les Bicyclettes de
Belsize’, ‘Winter World Of Love’ and
‘This Moment In Time’. “I can’t wait
to get back to South Africa,” says
Humperdinck. “I have some wonderful memories from past concerts in your country. I would like
to show people what I’m doing
now, including my new duet album
called ‘Engelbert Calling’.”
Humperdinck has recorded everything from the most romantic
ballads to the platinum-selling
theme song ‘Lesbian Seagull’ for
the ‘Beavis and Butthead’ movie.
Few people realize that several
of the major forces in the world of
rock n’ roll, including Jimi Hendrix
and The Carpenters, started out as
opening acts for Humperdinck in
4 The Next 48hOURS
Engelbert Humperdinck
the late 1960s, 70s and 80s. Humperdinck even took the #1 chart spot
away from The Beatles during their
heyday.
Interestingly, it was Humperdinck, not Elvis, who made famous the sideburns and flamboyant
leather jumpsuits. Humperdinck often jokingly asserts that Elvis “stole”
the image from him. Nevertheless,
the two legends often performed
one another’s songs and enjoyed a
lasting friendship until Elvis’ death.
Humperdinck has always enjoyed
a healthy rivalry with Tom Jones
and the two actually partnered for
ten years and shared a manager for
many more.
Romance serves as the core of
Humperdinck’s music and lasting
success. Last year, Humperdinck
completed recording his first duets
CD titled, ‘Engelbert Calling’, featuring tracks with a who’s who of
the music world, including Sir Elton
John, Willie Nelson, Shelby Lynne,
Charles Aznavour, Johnny Mathis,
Cliff Richard, Neil Sedaka, Dionne
Warwick, Kenny Rogers, Lulu, Beverly Knight and Gene Simmons, to
name a few. The first single in the
UK was the duet with Cliff Richard
which went straight onto BBC radio
2 A list and became the most played
independent single of the year.
With four Grammy nominations,
a Golden Globe for “Entertainer of
the Year” (1988), 63 gold and 24
platinum records and a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame, Humperdinck might rest easy on his laurels.
Hardly. In the past few years, he
has joined in elite group of musical
artists, such as Tony Bennett and
Burt Bacharach, who have crossed
over successfully to strike a new
chord with a younger generation
in addition to their core audiences.
“The Humper” has appeared on
several MTV programs, including
two appearances on ‘MTV Beach
House’, ‘Chilling with the Weaze’
and ‘Oddville’.

all its intricacies. The opening number, ‘Born Under One Sky’ addresses
the subject of survival of the fittest,
and Dyer and the exquisite Zimbabwean-vocalist Ammara Brown (with
a choir backing) provide a musical
taste of things to come.
The narrative dips in and out of
conflict and suffering, highlighting
aspects such as migration, the gathering of the clan, slavery, genocide,
death and re-birth. The deeper message conveyed is that whatever our
different cultures, belief systems,
spiritualties and various perceptions
of creation are, at the core we are all
connected.
A stand-out track is the emotive ‘Makubenjalo’ (Let It Be) which
is repeated towards the end when
Ann Masinga gives it the full operatic treatment. During the course of
the production Ammara Brown also
shows her vocal prowess on the title
number ‘Colour Me Human.”
Dyer is a busy man on stage. Apart
from his vocal contribution (he impresses with the number ‘Mmala’),
he plays sax, flute, guitar and vocoder. He is ably supported bythe
commanding Thandi Ntuli on piano, Lungile Kunene on drums and
Amaeshi Ikechi on acoustic and electric bass.
Says Dyer: “In this age of difference and conflict, intolerance and
survival, ‘Colour Me Human’ is a look
at how human beings, as a collective
species should be united in that we
are all a part of the same race – the
human race.”
It is certainly a production with a
difference and one in which I found
myself immersed.

International acts to rock
electronic SoundsWild festival
SoundsWild will return for its annual
festival on Friday, November 27, and
has announced international headliners Crystal Castles and also Flux Pavilion.
The second annual SoundsWild
festival will go electronic with a wild
night of intoxicating visuals, DJs and
live electronic artists at Carfax in
Newtown.
“After much thought and planning we are confident that we have
created a concept that so many music
fans are hungry for in South Africa.
We feel often events only cater to
one type of electronic music fan, with
SoundsWild we aim to bring something for everyone with a diverse
range of electronic music on offer,”
says Darren Bullock, SoundsWild Festival Programmer.
“We are super excited to be hosting Crystal Castles and Flux Pavilion
for SoundsWild and we hope to see
you all there for a night of great vibes
and more importantly bass,” adds
Bullock.
Effortlessly fusing low-res electronic noise and pop hooks, Crystal
Castles began as producer/multiinstrumentalist Ethan Kath’s solo
project in late 2003. Crystal Castles
returned in 2010 with another self-titled album and toured all the big festivals, playing at Leeds, Glastonbury
and Big Day Out to name a few. The
band’s third album ‘III’ featured the
singles ‘Plague’, ‘Wrath of God’ and
‘Sad Eyes’, all of which were instant
hits. The group’s fourth album will
follow in 2016 and include new singles ‘Frail’ and ‘Deicide’ (both Hype
Machine number 1’s and the most
successful songs online in the band’s
10 year career to date), as well as featuring the bands new vocalist Edith.
Flux Pavilion
Flux Pavilion had made a name
for himself with plenty of club hits,
remixes, and DJ gigs, but 2010’s ‘I
Can’t Stop’ took his career to another
level. Two ‘fans’ Flux met on a tour of
America asked to sample the cut for
their upcoming hip-hop album, and
a year later ‘I Can’t Stop’ became the
basis of ‘Who Gon Stop Me’ on Jay-Z
and Kanye West’s collaborative effort,
‘Watch the Throne’. Flux Pavilion’s hit
track ‘Bass Cannon’ arrived that same
year. The artist has worked on a diverse selection of original tracks and
collaborations with the likes of Childish Gambino, Dillon Francis, Steve
Aoki and Turin Brakes, plus remixing
for the likes of Skrillex, Jamiroquai,
MIA and DJ Fresh.
Joining the international headliners will be the likes of PHFAT and Niskerone.

know, with comedy one never knows
what people will find funny. My humour may not be congruent with yours.
I know this because when I get asked to
recommend one of my DVD’s to someone who wants to borrow them from
me, and especially when they preface
it by saying they like comedies, then I
tread cautiously.
Long story short, some like slapstick humour. Others like that terribly
predictable American forced humour
(of the ‘Two Broke Girls’ variety) and
then some (like me) prefer a little more
subtle, (cerebral?) not-so-in-yourface British humour of the ‘Monty
Python’/’Catherine Tate’/’Little Britain’
sort. So, it stands to reason that when
one writes material for comedy one is
abundantly aware of this. Irrespective
of whether things are just not funny which, in itself, is a matter of opinion
- the fact of the matter is, one needs to
stick to one’s guns.
If slapstick is your thing – then so
be it. If a mindless, punch line joke is
your thing, then bully for you! I can appreciate toilet humour just like the next
person.
Let’s face it, a fart is still funny –
years and years after discovering we all
do it, it is still funny. But is it funny be-

think about why it does so. Funny
aside, the uncomfortable part is the
part I need to question: does it cause
uneasiness because I have not evolved
enough, or is it just plain inappropriate? And, if so, what or who decides
appropriateness or lack thereof? “Civil
society”: a term I loathe about as much
as I would eating raw eggs on a thin
slice of buttered cement.
I guess it is all a matter of perspective. It is like the adage: that one man’s
terrorist is the other’s freedom fighter,
and my old favourite: the shopkeeper
and the shopper will have very different points of view on the shop, yielding
very different (often equally weighted)
arguments about the shop…

marvelous meal for charity and relishing an impeccable five star meal,
guests can enjoy beauty tips from
Elizabeth Arden and get pampered

T
he blockbuster ‘Hunger Games’
franchise has taken audiences by
storm around the world, grossing more than $2.2 billion at the
global box office. ‘The Hunger Games:
Mockingjay – Part 2’ now brings the
franchise to its powerful final chapter in
which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) realizes the stakes are no longer
just for survival – they are for the future.
The story picks up with Katniss back
in the bunkers of District 13, still unable
to emotionally reach a brainwashed Peeta as she watches the nation of Panem
sliding into full-scale apocalyptic war.
Though Katniss has warily accepted her
role as the Mockingjay symbol of the rebellion, she can see that it is going take
more than symbolism to turn the tide
against the Capitol. Truly on fire now,
she resolves to take action. Joining with
Gale (Liam Hemsworth), an unpredictable
Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Finnick (Sam
Claflin), and the so-called “Squad 451,”
she sets out for the once-glittering Capitol – transformed into a city of mayhem
under attack by both rebels and peacekeepers – with a covert mission to assassinate President Snow. Snow still believes
he’s playing an obsessive game to outwit
and destroy Katniss, but Katniss is no longer anyone’s pawn, and to her, this is no
contest. It is a battle for everything she
has come to believe in and the people she
loves. It is a battle for the final hope of a
life of peace.
‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay –
Part 2’ builds on the momentum of each
previous chapter in the blockbuster series
to reach a fever pitch, bringing Katniss
full circle from the dismayed girl caught
in a dystopian nightmare to leading the
charge to remake her nation.
The first film, ‘The Hunger Games’,
introduced audiences to Katniss, an independent-minded but anonymous 16
A scene from ‘The Hunger Games’
year-old girl living in District 12, one of
Panem’s enslaved districts, with little future of which to dream. Her life changes
instantaneously when she volunteers in
her younger sister’s place for the annual
Hunger Games, an intense gladiatorial
competition of sheer survival between 24
adolescent warriors known as Tributes,
broadcast live on national TV. Katniss and
District 12’s male Tribute, Peeta Mellark,
are soon whisked to the Capitol, the centre of tyrannical power, where a glammedout populace feeds off lurid spectacles.
There, separated from her family and best
friend Gale, she is thrown into a glitzy
makeover and gruelling training, before
entering the arena as an underdog in the
74th Annual Hunger Games. Forced to
make harrowing decisions spanning life,
death, friendship and love, Katniss discovers reserves of strength and willpower she
never knew she had, and attains an unsettling new fame as “The Girl on Fire”…but
the costs to her spirit are high.
‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’,
rejoins Katniss as a victor of the Hunger
Games, but one who is given zero chance
to enjoy her promised rewards or to recover from the physical and mental toll
of the arena. Instead, haunted by memories and craving her independence, she is
compelled into a deceptive “Victor’s Tour”
and a public engagement to Peeta. Then
she’s told she must do the unthinkable:
re-enter the Hunger Games arena in the
lauded Quarter Quell games, which President Snow declares will be the ultimate
battle between former victors – a move
aimed directly at Katniss. The stakes grow
higher as Katniss now fights as much for
the lives of her friends and family as her
own survival. In the jungle-themed arena,
Katniss makes vital new alliances, even
as she becomes the unwitting idol of a
rapidly spreading rebellion against the
Capitol.
‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part
1’, begins as Katniss, extracted from the
Quarter Quell games while unconscious,
awakens in never-before-seen District 13,
the dark, regimented underground realm
where a plot to take over the Capitol is
forming. Here, she is a legend. Yet Katniss
feels more alone and uncertain of who
to trust than ever. District 12 has been
turned to rubble. Peeta is being held and
forcibly indoctrinated by President Snow.
Under pressure from District 13’s steely
leader, President Coin (Julianne Moore),
Katniss must embrace a role she never really wanted: to embody the symbol of the
Mockingjay, the symbol of hope. Even as

as co-founder of the Malala Fund.
Oscar winning documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (‘An Inconvenient Truth’, ‘Waiting For Super-
A teenage girl in the Midwest becomes infected by an outbreak of
a disease that slowly turns the infected into cannibalistic zombies.
During her transformation, her
loving father stays by her side.
“I thought (director) Henry
Hobson’s vision for ‘Maggie’ was a
unique perspective on the zombie
genre,” says producer Joey Tufaro.
“With his background as an artist
and designer, Henry has a style of
shooting that heightens the tension in the scenes, making the
most ordinary interactions frightening. When you hear ‘Arnold
Schwarzenegger’ and ‘zombie
apocalypse’, you may think of a
big effects-filled movie, but what
she begins to open her wings, her path is
unclear, as Peeta is rescued from Snow’s
grip in a hate-filled trance, the people of
the Districts grow increasingly desperate,
and Snow remains as despotically in control as ever.
Now, in the final chapter of ‘The Hunger Games’, with all the Districts united
against the Capitol for the first time, tomorrow itself is on the line. For Katniss to
truly be herself, she realizes she must now
fully take on the indomitable Mockingjay
spirit in a last stand to set things right.
Says director Francis Lawrence: “In this
film, Katniss takes the action back into
her own hands and goes after Snow personally. The movie really opens up as we
go deep into the streets of the Capitol,
coming full circle from Katniss’s journey
there in the first film. There’s more action,
more scope, more emotion and most of
all, this film brings the story to its moving
conclusion.”
In four increasingly complex performances, Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence has taken Katniss Everdeen
through a pendulum’s worth of changes.
She has metamorphosed from a disarmed
girl trying to save herself and then her
family to a deeply reluctant rebel hero
and now finally, to a sharply-honed,
fiercely determined leader determined to
shatter a ruthless society for the good of
all. Lawrence says she has enjoyed growing with the ever-evolving yet steadfastly
true-to-herself character and is thrilled to
bring Katniss to her apex in ‘Mockingjay
– Part 2’.
“This is the chapter when Katniss really
starts to believe in the impact that she can
have,” Lawrence comments. “She’s always
been so reluctant and has always found
herself in situations where all she can do
is try to survive, but now she’s turning the
tables. I was excited for her to finally take
her place as a leader. At the end of ‘Mockingjay – Part 1’, she was kind of numb,
and genuinely unsure if she wanted to
go on. In ‘Mockingjay – Part 2’ she starts
seeing the bigger picture. She’s looking
beyond her own personal losses and gains
to focus on making a better future.”
you’re going to see will surprise
you. I think fans and audiences
are going to be caught off-guard
by the amazing performances and
how visually stunning the film is.”
From the film’s opening scene
with Maggie (Abigail Breslin)
standing precariously perched
on the roof of her family’s farm
house, Hobson weaves dread and
suspense into each frame of this
genre-blending movie.
Working with cinematographer Lukas Ettlin and production
designer Gabor Norman, Hobson
turns the most routine activities
- preparing dinner, kissing a loved
one goodnight, walking in the
woods - into silently terrifying,
if not menacing encounters. In
Hobson’s post-apocalyptic small
town America, danger and death
lurk just out-of-sight in the sugar
cane fields or down the road at the
edge of the forest - or upstairs in a
child’s bedroom.
“The look stems from the world
in which the film is set, with power
and electricity in short supply and
nature dying from the same virus
that is killing people... Rich earthy
tones inside and outside the house,
the clothing and even in nature,”
says Hobson. “I wanted the camera to be close to the characters,
within the family, feeling the pain,
handheld and analogue. There is
menace in the lighting, the skies
and palette, no richness in a world
that has forgotten excess. I had visually mapped out the whole film
beforehand, a detailed colour reference chart and palette was set. I
created a book which had a visual
reference for almost every scene.
So anyone in the crew could get
a wider understanding of how the
unique visual style within a single
scene could fit into the films wider
realm.”

The film gives an inside glimpse

Some like it hot
I
love Korean food. Even
though I have not been to
Korea, I have eaten it in
many countries. One of my
favourite spots is in Hong Kong
where I get delicious Korean
food that has everything in it
that makes it real and authentic
- wonderful salt fermented seafood; ground Chinese pepper;
vinegar, which adds tartness to
the dishes and eliminates strong
odours from fish.
I love the use of sesame
salt, mustard sauce, cinnamon,
black pepper, the spiciness from
ground red chilli peppers, ginger, garlic sliced or shredded,
green onions, soy and Doenjang,
which is a soybean paste. I love
spicy tofu stew, delicious seafood pancake served with a soy
and sesame dipping sauce, cold
noodles in broth and bulgogi,
which is marinated paper-thin
rib eye, cooked on the BBQ and
served wrapped in lettuce.
I have been looking for a Korean cook book for a while now
and have just discovered ‘Our
Korean Kitchen’, which is an
exciting collection of delicious,
easy-to-make recipes from the
latest food craze.
Korean food is fast becoming
the biggest trend in the culinary
world. ‘Our Korean Kitchen’
captures this movement and
introduces us to Korean food
through a collection of classic
and well-loved dishes. Beautifully illustrated throughout,
the book explores the secrets of
authentic Korean food. Covering an extensive range of dishes
including stir-fried spicy squid,
sesame and soy marinated
beef and pecan and cinnamon
stuffed pancakes, recipes cater
for beginners as well as those
with a little more experience of
cooking K-Food.
Critically acclaimed food
writer Jordan and his Korean
wife Rejina provide a cultural
history of the food of Korea,
giving context to the recipes
that follow.
Through the discussion of
Korean drinks, dining etiquette,
a list of key ingredients and
the role of multiple side dishes,
readers will be able to prepare
and indulge in all aspects of Korean cuisine.
Jordan writes for a wide
range of publications such as
Grazia, The Huffington Post and
Sainsbury’s and Waitrose magazine and is a well-established
name in the world of cookery.
‘Our Korean Kitchen’ provides the perfect alternative
to other Asian cuisine such as
Japanese, Chinese and Thai. Kfood is set to take SA by storm,
as there is a lack of concise and
definitive Korean recipe books
on the market.
Demand for Korean ingredients is on the rise. The cuisine
has become very popular due to
being espoused by British chefs
such as Jamie Oliver and Nigella
Lawson.
Jordan is the author of the

well received ‘The Guilt-Free
Gourmet’ cookbook. He was
named the winner of the KFood Festival, a competition
searching for the UK’s best Korean chef, and has travelled extensively in Korea, learning from
a number of its well respected
chefs.
Jordan’s wife, Rejina Pyo,
is an eminent fashion designer
and proud of her culinary heritage.
She helped introduce Jordan
to authentic Korean ingredients
and flavour.

of Asian cuisine and like to experiment with food, this book is

SA’s top restaurants honoured at SA’s annual “Foodie Oscars”
By Jen Su
TV & Radio Personality JEN SU attended the
recent 2015 Mercedes-Benz Eat Out Awards for
the Next 48hOURS.
Talk about a gourmet extravaganza! The
2015 Mercedes-Benz Eat Out Restaurant
Awards - aka the “Foodie Oscars” - was the
talk of the town over the weekend. As The
Next 48hOURS Editor Naushad Khan and I were
whisked to the venue in a gorgeous MercedesBenz S63, I checked my phone to discover that
#EatOutAwards was already trending before the
event even started.
A last minute change in venue to the SunExhibits Centre at GrandWest did not deter any
of the guests, and in fact, the turnout - as it
is every year - was absolutely tremendous, with
hundreds in attendance. The Sunday lunch of
the year set the scene for the announcement
of South Africa’s top culinary talent, with The
Test Kitchen taking top honours again among
SA restaurants as Restaurant of the Year for the
fourth year in a row.
Scot Kirton of La Colombe won the coveted
title of Eat Out San Pellegrino Chef of the Year.
Guests were also treated to one of his signature
dishes at the awards celebration, accompanied
by a brief “how-to” video on how the dish was
put together (a nice addition this year!) Franschhoek-based restaurant The Tasting Room at
Le Quartier Français was recognised for maintaining the highest level of service for the second year in a row, with the Service Excellence
Award.
The winner of the Lannice Snyman Lifetime
Achievement Award, presented by associate
sponsor Novus Holdings, was the grande dame
of hospitality, the late Liz McGrath. The Nederburg Rising Star Award went to Carmen Muller

Jackie Cameron, the award-winning former
chef at Hartford House and owner of the Jackie
Cameron School of Food & Wine; Benny Masekwameng, ‘MasterChef SA’ judge and professional chef; and Siba Mtongana, award-winning food writer and celebrity TV chef.
Some of the celebrities in attendance included Roxy Louw, who wore gorgeous jewellery
from The Legacy Collection, as well as Elana Afrika, who was the emcee in a resplendent long
white chiffon gown. J’Something from Mi Casa
- who’s becoming renowned for his gourmet
chef talents as much as his music - also enjoyed
the gourmet extravaganza with his manager,
Dale Herbst.

Sennheiser’s $55000 headphones incorporate analog technology
By Imran Khan
The Analog Experience
I
n the past few years we have
seen rapid development in headphone technology. Be it the
latest ‘Beats’ or ‘Skull Candy’
headphones, everyone is in the race
to create the ideal personal listening experience, not least of which
is the electronics giant Sennheiser.
Sennheiser is popular for their headphones, which offer exceptional
sound quality.
However, up until now, they have
improved upon the same product either by adding bigger sound drivers,
or tweaking the frequency response
of their headphones.
With their latest product, the
Sennheiser ‘Orpheus’, they are going back in time and putting digital technology on the back burner,
because there is nothing quite like a
good piece of analog sound equipment.
The ‘Orpheus’ headphone set is a
powerful device equipped with platinum vaporized diaphragm drivers,
boasting a frequency response from
8 Hertz to 100 Kilohertz.
What makes it truly analog is that
fact that the earphones are driven by
a standalone 8 tube amplifier. Yes
you read that right, Sennheiser have
gone all the way back to Vacuum
tube technology and if you know
valves, they have to warm up before
you can use them. The result of this
is sound with absolute clarity, detail
and delivery of vocals with pin point
precision.
These are not commercially available yet, but according to Mark Walton of ‘ARS Technica’, a UK based
Technology Publication, they will
retail for around US$55000 a pair.

Disney’s Smartwatch
This is a little bit of a spooky one,
but Disney together with Carnegie
Mellon University have created a
smart watch that recognises objects
that you hold. The concept works on
a principle called ‘Electromagnetic
Noise’ and the fact that everyday
objects each emit a unique EM Frequency. So by wearing this watch,
you could touch your laptop and the
watch will display the name of the
object.
Now this seems whimsical in
a way, but it goes a step further.
Step on an electronic scale and the
watch will identify the scale as well
as download and display your weight
measurement. This weight data will
then be uploaded to your online profile so you can track your weight and
exercise regime. The next step to this
technology is online tutorials. For
example, you might want to build a
picture frame.
The watch will display instructions
and tools that you need to use in order to build that frame.
Due to EM Noise, if you pick up
the wrong tool, the watch will vibrate and advise you to change tools.
It Sounds highly farfetched, but
it could be a very useful device for
learning and with a detection frequency of 96.1% it’s well on its way
to becoming the watch of the future.
The prototype is still very rough,
but has blown away critics at its
“proof of concept” presentation. We
hope to see more on the ‘EM-Sense’
from the Carnegie University team in
the near future.
The Disney Smartwatch identifies objects and offers advise on
usage of that object

Heel to heal at Sisters With Blisters 2015
Thousands of sisters and misters, including the Deputy Minister of Social
Development, Mrs. Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, will unite at Steyn City
Lifestyle Resort in Fourways on Saturday, November 21, at 8am for the
10th annual 1st for Women Sisters
with Blisters protest walk with Jacaranda FM.
This walk for a cause attracts
over 5000 participants each year and
marks the start of the 16 Days of Activism for no violence against women
and children campaign. The aim of
the walk is to get Gauteng to take a
firm and unified stand against women and child abuse.
“The theme of Sisters with Blisters
2015 is Heel to Heal and although we
don’t expect all participants to march
in high heels, we do expect to heal
many lives as proceeds of Sisters with
Blisters will go to Women and Men
against Child Abuse and the Department of Social Development’s White
Door Centre of Hope,” says Robyn
Farrell, Executive Head of 1st for
Women Insurance.
“We also hope that through Sisters
with Blisters we can inspire those affected by gender-based violence to
seek help. We want to give women
the confidence to change their lives
for the better,” adds Farrell.
“Sisters with Blisters is about creating awareness regarding a serious

social issue. It gives men, woman
and children the courage to speak
out, be heard and change their situation positively. As a station we’re very
proud of this initiative, and we’re encouraging people to tell their stories.
That’s the reason why we’ve chosen
our very own Cassy Clarke to share
her story which will hopefully inspire
others to share theirs with confidence
to change their circumstances,” says

Sandton Sun reopens after R210 million makeover
T
sogo Sun’s iconic Sandton
Sun hotel has returned to
its rightful place as a sophisticated and modern
landmark in the area, following an
investment of R210 million into its
recently undertaken refurbishment.
The 31-year-old hotel is situated
in a prime location within the busy
and exclusive business and retail
hub of Sandton, and has been repositioned as a gateway into the
Sandton City shopping centre.
With street and hotel access linking it with Sandton City’s new
Diamond Walk, which is described
as “Africa’s definitive luxury and
super-luxury retail destination,”
the hotel is a natural asset to the
centre and to the city of Johannesburg.
“This refurbishment has strengthened Tsogo Sun’s position in Sand-
ton even further – as a leader in
Africa’s most influential node with
three hotels in excellent locations,
as well as the Sandton Convention
Centre,” says Marcel von Aulock,
CEO of Tsogo Sun.
Describing the revamp, Sandton
Sun General Manager, Peter Davidson, says, “We focused on taking
the detail into account when we
planned the refurbishment, ensuring that we incorporated simple
things that will make our guests’
stay more enjoyable – and that we
offer everything that a guest might
need.”
With the refurbishment, the number of hotel rooms has reduced by
eight to 326 spacious rooms and
suites that have been designed to
be luxurious with all the necessary
conveniences and comfort. “We
created a feature in selected rooms
where people can sit and work, ensuring we added touches such as
USB points. The bathrooms have
been rebuilt to luxurious standards,” says Davidson.
Throughout the hotel, furniture
has been refurbished and repurposed where possible, and the ambience is slick and sophisticated,
while still offering every guest a
home away from home. The ‘new’
Sandton Sun, says Davidson, is
now ahead of the game; it is the
preferred property among the luxury hotels in the area.
Tsogo Sun’s portfolio includes over
90 hotels and 14 casino and entertainment destinations throughout
South Africa, Africa, the Seychelles
and Abu Dhabi.
