Benalmadena promotes
a true culture of peace
MAYOR Paloma Garcia
Galvez presided over the
official launch of the Network
of Municipalities for Peace and
Values of UNESCO.
The event – held at Castillo
El Bil Bil – was attended by
former Director-General of
UNESCO
and
former
Education Minister Federico
Mayor Zaragoza, Magistrate
Silvia Martinez Canto, who is
the President of the Civil
Network of UNESCO in Spain.
Mayors from municipalities
across Spain and close to 50
representatives of groups and
associations from all corners of
the country also attended.
The project, promoted by
Asociacion Unesco Prodialogo
and the Citizen Participation
Department, seeks to advocate
for a culture of permanent
peace in society and to bring it
to citizens through conferences,
workshops, concerts and sports
events, among others, which
foster empathy, tolerance,
generosity,
understanding,
conflict
resolution
and
solidarity.
Mayor
Garcia
Galvez
pledged her support to the
initiative and said that: “it is
focused in fostering the values
of peace, tolerance, respect and
equality in a society with an
ever increasing number of
conflicts and problems.
“It is a challenge that needs
the support and commitment of
all citizens, because it is our
responsibility and our duty to
future generations to build a
society for the future.”
Galvez
expressed
her
heartfelt thanks to the
organisers
for
choosing
Benalmadena and said the
Council would work to make
the project of a more egalitarian
and fairer society a reality.
“I invite all Benalmadena
residents to participate in this
network and to join efforts so
that we can all work together
and build a world with a true
culture of peace,” said
councillor Ana Macias.

Caterpillar
control
process
BENAlMADENA Town
hall’s Parks and Gardens
Department has started
work to control Pine
Processionary caterpillars.
This process, carried out
every year to avoid severe
damage which the insects
can cause to both trees and
people, will last until
November 20. A specific
plant treatment is used,
applied to leaves using
high pressure pumps and
200 to 600 litre spray
hoses. The fumigation
process coincides with
hatching of larvae – which
in their first stages hardly
cause any damage – with
treatments being applied
morning and night.
Councillor Jose Antonio
Serrano stressed: “the
Parks and Gardens department is working to
fumigate against this
plague - the most important
to affect Mediterranean
pines - which can cause
skin irritation and severe
allergic reactions in some
cases.” he explained that
anyone who sees evidence
of the larvae in public areas
should alert the town hall.
Playgrounds, gardens
and green areas of the town
will be treated including
Miramar Tivoli, Pasaje
Palmasol, la leala and
Parquemiel; Valdepeñas,
Juan Ramon Jimenez,
Ancla, Alemania, Encina,
Esparto and Rubi streets;

Chucho Valdes’
tribute to his father
MORE than €7,000 was
raised at Chucho Valdes’
concert given on October 17 at
‘Tivoli
world’
in
remembrance of his father,
Bebo Valdes.
The artist paid an emotional
posthumous tribute to his
father, and the proceeds went
to Cudeca Foundation and
‘Una luz para Ezequiel’ (A
light for Ezequiel) association.
Close to a thousand people
attended the charity event and
the Cuban artist surrounded
himself with friends such as
Estrella Morente, Genara
Cortes and Celia Flores
amongst others, who took part
in such a magical evening.

THE AMERICAN CLUB OF THE COSTA DEL SOL
ThE American Club of the
Costa del Sol is a social club
which leans towards both
enjoying life and giving to
those who are less fortunate.
we have nearly 200
members along the Costa del
Sol, from Malaga to Estepona,
(not all of them Americans –
the club is open to all
nationalities).
Our members generally
belong to one of four Chapters,
namely:
Malaga, FMB,
Mijas,
(Fuengirola,
Benalmadena) Marbella or
Estepona.
Each Chapter has its own
social activities which include
coffee mornings, monthly
meetings (often with Guest
Speakers), monthly luncheons,
cocktail evenings, day trips,
halloween nights, Christmas
functions etc. and all four
Chapters like to get together as
one group to celebrate special
American holidays such as
July 4th and Thanksgiving.

can for others, by contributing
to neighbourhood charities,
raffles,
selling
holding
memorabilia to raise money
and generally supporting local
efforts.
Charity concert in Arroyo de la Miel
achieves an excellent response
OVER 100 people attended a concert with
music from 15 local and foreign musicians
and groups organised by Central FM Radio in
collaboration with the Foreign Residents
Department of Benalmadena Town hall on
Friday, October 10 at the Plaza de la Mezquita
in Arroyo de la Miel.
The concert was in aid of the Costa del Sol
Foreigners’ Cultural Association and Tomas
leighton. The area councillor, Adolfo
Fernandez, expressed his satisfaction with the
excellent response and thanked the organisers
and especially those who collaborated to raise
the largest amount possible for both charitable
causes.

of arms, la Niña de
Benalmadena and a niche
with a statue of Nuestra
Señora de la Cruz welcomes all visitors.

park, which serves to
embellish one of the main
entrances to Benalmadena
Pueblo.

our
municipality a better place,”
said Galvez.

ThE third edition of the popular
tournament organised by Golf
Spain and sponsored by the
Tourist Department gathered
more than 150 national and
international
golfers
at
Torrequebrada Golf Club.
Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez
attended and led a ceremony at
Torrequebrada ThB hotel to
end this event during which
prizes were awarded to winners
of the various categories and a
sports fashion show was also
held. The mayor expressed her
satisfaction with the tournament
which helps to promote the area
and encourage the coupling of
sport and tourism.

councillor Adolfo Fernandez
and other members of the local
government team - explained
the tournament has become one
of the most important golf dates
in Malaga during the autumn
and winter seasons and thanked
the organisers, sponsors and
collaborators for their work. She
stressed the town hall’s intention
to continue the tournament and
create new local golfing events.

Benalmadena
has
some
important golf clubs which have
achieved fame on a national and
international level.

solutions and it’s vocation to offer solidary
help breaches all geographical frontiers.

Benalmadena hotels to save
up to 55 per cent in industrial
rubbish rates due to discount
BENAlMADENA hotels
will be able to save up to 55
per cent in industrial rubbish
rates thanks to a 40 per cent
discount on such rates
approved by the Council and
an additional 15 per cent cut
following the reduction in
cadastral values in the
municipality.
The announcement was
made by Economy and Tax
councillor Jose Miguel

Tourism
councillor Adolfo Fernandez.
The hotels wishing to
benefit from the discount –
promoted by the Tourism
Department in an effort to
stimulate the local hotel
sector and fight the effects of

NEARlY 100 people –
including
Spanish

foreign residents – visited
Grazalema
on
Sunday
October 5 as part of the ‘Off
the beaten track’ cycle, which
aims at bringing foreigners
closer to some of the most
emblematic
areas
and
festivities of the province.
The visitors participated in
Grazalema’s popular ‘Sangre
y Amor en la Sierra’ fiesta.
‘Sangre y Amor en la
Sierra’ is a historical reenactment – set in 1832 – that
takes place every year in
