What to see and do in Benalmadena
HOMAGE PAID: A plaque was unveiled by the mayor and Chucho Valdes.
Roundabout named
after Bebo Valdes
BENALMADENA
paid
homage to deceased Cuban
pianist Bebo Valdes by naming
a local roundabout after him.
The mayor, Paloma Garcia
Galvez, was present at the
naming of the roundabout,
in Calle Topacio, Arroyo de
la Miel, along with Bebo’s
son Chucho Valdes, and
other relatives and friends
of the pianist who spent his
last years in the town. The
mayor and Chucho Valdes
unveiled a name plaque on the
roundabout.
“The council wants to
pay homage to the man who
was our most internationally
recognised local resident. The
event allows us to show our
respect and love for a humble
and discreet man, who shared
the last years of his life with
us, and who took the name
of Benalmadena wherever he
went with his piano and his
music, promoting our town not
only as a tourist destination but
also as an incomparable place
to live,” the mayor said.
She explained the event was
a “gesture of gratitude to a
great musician and a great man
who left a human and musical
legacy impossible to forget.”

AN ecological market will

The mayor, Paloma Garcia
Galvez, signed an agreement
with
the
Guadalhorce
Ecological Association, which
initially until December, aims

of the environment.

Play park now reopen
and ready for fun
FOLLOWING a total refurbishment,
the children’s play park in the centre of
Arroyo de la Miel is once again open
to the public.
The mayor, Paloma Garcia Galvez,
attended the inauguration of the park,
which is one of the town’s best-known
fun and games areas. It has been totally
refurbished to improve the appearance
and the facilities available and offers
locals an area for leisure right in the
centre of the town. More than 100
children with their families attended
the opening event and enjoyed the
games and activities arranged for them
to celebrate the end of the works.
The mayor was accompanied by
the Councillor for Parks and Gardens,
Jose Antonio Serrano, as well as other
local dignitaries and representatives of
the company which has carried out the
work. She congratulated them on the

result and the “excellent refurbishment
of an area which was quite deteriorated
and now offers an attractive image to
locals and visitors.”
The improvement of the park had
been demanded by local residents
for some time, and the work, which
cost €88,000, responds to the local
council’s aim to improve the quality of
life of the people of Benalmadena.
Campaign to
control taxis
LOCAL POLICE in Benalmadena have
launched a campaign to control, detect and report
unauthorised vehicles from being used as taxis.
This is a problem which becomes worse
during the summer season and which seriously
affects the income of official local taxi drivers,
the councillors for Transport and Citizen
Safety, Rafael Obrero and Concepcion Tejada
respectively, complained.
The police will carry out random checks in
areas where this illegal activity is known to be
carried out, and watch some 50 vehicles which
are suspected of operating as taxis. Such practices
have been under surveillance since last August.
Obrero said the local council, and especially the
mayor, Paloma Garcia Galvez, is intent on doing
away with illegal and unfair competition in the
local taxi sector where official drivers pay taxes
and abide by the laws. This, he said, guaranteed
safety, peace of mind and comfort for users.
Tejada mentioned that there are private vehicles
operating in the town which pick up passengers
to take them to the airport, golf courses and other
destinations on a regular basis.

The foreign residents in the town

between citizens.”
The Councillor for Foreign
Residents also applauded the
solidarity of the Welsh Society

For St George, and charity
THE grey skies on St George’s Day did not
keep people away from the fun in Arroyo de la
Miel, which was attended by more than 1,000
visitors.
The Plaza de la Mezquita was the venue
for the early celebrations and charity event
organised by Nicky Allen and Roger Davies.
This is the third year that St George’s Day
celebrations have been held in Arroyo de la
Miel. This year, there were more than 20 stands.
The idea was to raise funds for two local
charities, ANABE, which helps handicapped
and paralysed children go swimming in
Malaga, and ASAB, the association, which
supports Alzheimer’s sufferers and their
families in Benalmadena. The event raised
around €1,500 to be shared between them.
The mayor of Benalmadena, Paloma Garcia,
was present at the event, accompanied by
the councillor for Foreign Residents, Adolfo
Fernandez, and other local dignitaries. She

thanked the organisers and participants for their
efforts in carrying out an event to celebrate the
day of the Patron Saint of England.
Radio presenter Tony Keys opened the day’s
performances and the audience was entertained
by the Costa All-Stars Cheerleaders, singing
from Jason Oliver, Tina Hall, Laura Oldfield,
and the ever popular KT Peters.
There was dancing from Dance-o-mania of
Benalmadena and Danza from Marbella who
performed a Masquerade dance.
Also there was a group from the Salon
Varietés Theatre of Fuengirola who were
dressed as fairy kings and queens.
Food was provided by Big Baps of Arroyo
de la Miel and the bar was run by Chester’s.
Many organisations and businesses attended
and special mention goes to Callum Maughan
and Rafael Soria for their efforts on the bric-abrac and secondhand book stall.
The English Cemetery of Malaga had a
stand with President Bruce McIntyre handing
out information, the RAF Association was
represented by Chairman Fred Briggs, Vicechairman Lawrence Salvoni and Ron Sibbett,
Honorary Secretary. Avalon were on hand to
give advice on funeral planning.
This month’s Spotlight
is on... Anne Young
Personal
information
(name, surname, age…)
Anne Young, aged 65,
married.
What were you doing before
you came to Spain?
Before I came to Spain I
was living on the outskirts of
London (Upminster in Essex)
with my husband Michael
and dog Toney. My husband
and I both decided to retire
early in 2003 and decided we
would like to live somewhere
with a better climate that
would offer a good standard
of living for pensioners.
We were both born in
Belfast, Northern Ireland,
but had lived and worked in
London for 38 years.
In London my husband was
a pastry chef and I was Area
Manager for a large brewing
and pub company.
Why have you chosen
Benalmadena?
We chose Benalmadena
because we had enjoyed
some holidays in the area
over the years.
How long have you been
living in Benalmadena?
We have now been living
in Torrequebrada for almost
10 years.
Do you feel at home here?
We feel very happy living
here.
What do you like most
about our culture?
We love the climate and
the relaxed style of living and
the fact that it is so easy to
have an enjoyable time at a
great deal less expense than it
would be if we were still in
London.
What do you miss most
from your country?
Certainly not the weather...
but we do miss our friends.
However, we have made
some good friends here and
many of our friends and
family visit us here.
Do you feel integrated?
Yes, we do feel integrated
in as much as we can. I
am struggling to learn the
language (would have been
easier if I was younger) but
my husband is mastering it
much quicker.
How would you promote
integration among foreign
residents in Benalmadena?
I think improved integration
really lies in learning the
language and it helps that
the town halls offer low cost
Spanish lessons and run the
intercambio days. Also the
trips to places of interest run
by the Foreigners Department
are a good opportunity to see
more of Spain and enjoy the
company of others.
