What were you doing before you came to Spain? Before I came to Spain I was living on the outskirts of London (Upminster in Essex) with my husband Michael and dog Toney. My husband and I both decided to retire early in 2003 and decided we would like to live somewhere with a better climate that would offer a good standard of living for pensioners. We were both born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but had lived and worked in London for 38 years. In London my husband was a pastry chef and I was Area Manager for a large brewing and pub company. Why have you chosen Benalmadena? We chose Benalmadena because we had enjoyed some holidays in the area over the years. How long have you been living in Benalmadena? We have now been living in Torrequebrada for almost 10 years. Do you feel at home here? We feel very happy living here. What do you like most about our culture? We love the climate and the relaxed style of living and the fact that it is so easy to have an enjoyable time at a great deal less expense than it would be if we were still in London. What do you miss most from your country? Certainly not the weather... but we do miss our friends. However, we have made some good friends here and many of our friends and family visit us here. Do you feel integrated? Yes, we do feel integrated in as much as we can. I am struggling to learn the language (would have been easier if I was younger) but my husband is mastering it much quicker. How would you promote integration among foreign residents in Benalmadena? I think improved integration really lies in learning the language and it helps that the town halls offer low cost Spanish lessons and run the intercambio days. Also the trips to places of interest run by the Foreigners Department are a good opportunity to see more of Spain and enjoy the company of others.
