Marina prepares a year of events you can’t miss PUERTO Marina will establish itself as the nautical complex with the widest and most varied selection of leisure activities in Andalucia and much of the Spanish coast this year. Benalmadena Council and the marina business association have launched a marine-themed calendar of events for the spring and autumn months, with more than 50 dates including cultural events, shows, leisure events, animations and art shows. “The scheme aims to provide new attractions to our marina, which has been named by specialist publications as the most beautiful marina in the world,” Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez explained and added that the council had also been working for the last two years to promote family tourism. Circus and dance shows, themed parties, artistic events, theatre, a sea-market, openair cinema, talent contests, a fair dedicated to different foreign cultures and music festivals are just some of the events planned. Not-to-be-missed happenings include Minichef, held at the Oil Fair on March 5-8, where the younger members of the family will have the chance to show off their culinary skills, The Big Show talent contest, Urban Sketchers drawing competition, Legends of the Sea pirate show and Benalfest music festival. 2 BENALMADENA MONTHLY MARCH 2015 SPOTLESS BEACHES: Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez collects Q for Quality certificate for the town’s coast. Mayor picks up awards on behalf of Benalmadena BENALMAdENA Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez collected two awards at Fitur tourism trade fair in Madrid, a Q for Quality beaches distinction and a hospitality certificate. The Q for Quality flags have been flying on beaches between Fuente de la Salud and Sunset Beach since last summer, and the mayor collected the certificate to back them up at the annual ceremony held at the Madrid fair. The titles have been bestowed for the first time in the history of Benalmadena, in an event presided over by head of the National Tourism department, isabel Borrego. The Q for Quality does not only certificate the cleanliness of the sand and water, but also guarantees the great quality of leisure services, regulation of beach bars and sanitary conditions of beach facilities. “This certificate is a sign of prestige, whose reputation is well-known both nationally and internationally” said Mayor Galvez. Garcia Galvez was also awarded a hospitality Certificate by iSTUR Sustainable Tourism institute, acknowledging the mayor and council’s work to make the town a popular, environmentally friendly destination. Preparing for high-tech internet access wORK has begun to provide installations for fibre optics across Benalmadena. Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez and New Technologies councillor Rafael Obrero informed that the work, which the council has invested in heavily, will give more than 30,000 Benalmadena homes, 5,000 commercial properties and 1,000 businesses access to the modern technology and speed up their internet connections. Garcia Galvez explained that the work will create jobs both directly and indirectly and put the town at the forefront of local towns technology-wise. work is expected to last most of this year, yet the mayor stressed that as existing infrastructures will be used, environmental impact and disturbance to both local residents and visitors to Benalmadena should be minimal. The mayor said that locals and businesses are increasingly requesting quality access to higher amounts of services, applications, online contents and platforms that can only be supported by the latest technologies and although few areas are currently able to use the high-tech access the council is pushing to speed the process up as much as possible. MARCH 2015 BENALMADENA MONTHLY 3 Finnish expats meet mayor BENALMAdENA Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez held a meeting with almost 100 Finnish residents of the area to answer their queries and hear their requests and suggestions. At the meeting at Parque innova in Arroyo de la Miel, the benefits of signing on the padron residents register were discussed along with improvement works to neighbourhoods and urbanisations and upcoming activities of interest. The mayor, who was accompanied by Foreign Residents and Youth councilors Adolfo Fernandez and Rafael Obrero, thanked those that attended for their interest in municipal issues and expressed her intention to work to help expatriates fully integrate themselves in Benalmadena. “The council called this meeting, one of those held periodically with various groups of expatriates, to hear their needs and requests and inform them of things we are doing,” Garcia Galvez explained, stressing that one of the goals of the local council is to get expatriates involved in local matters. “we continue to work with ideas including these meetings that the Foreign Residents’ department holds with different groups to keep expatriates needs in mind,” the mayor explained. AWARENESS: Mayor of the town visits exhibition ‘Miradas.’ Benalmadena joins the fight against cancer wORLd Cancer day commemorative events were held in Benalmadena on February 6. The events, organised by the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC), started during the morning with informative stands placed in different sites and continued during the afternoon at the hospital Vithas Xanit. here, short films featuring cancer patients together with their relatives and friends were shown, created by the Spanish Medical Oncology Society (SEOM). Poems were read and healthcare professionals thanked for their efforts towards helping cancer patients. in addition, the exhibition ‘Miradas’, was inaugurated. The mayor attended the event with other council representatives and thanked the AECC, saying: “The association carries out praiseworthy work, raising awareness amongst citizens to prevent and control this illness, as well as helping patients and their families, reaching those places that the administration is not able to reach.” “Cancer is a problem for all of us and all of us have to fight against it,” she concluded. There are currently 1.5 million cancer patients in Spain and more than 200,000 new cases are diagnosed per year. 4 BENALMADENA MONTHLY MARCH 2015 ‘Liquid Gold’ fair held in Benalmadena BENALMAdENA is the international capital city of olive oil this month. Once again, Puerto Marina is hosting Aovesol, the Costa del Sol’s Olive Oil fair, which was presented at the Fitur international Tourism Fair in Madrid. More than 50 exhibitors including the main oil mills and brands of Andalucia are at the fair. Priego de Cordoba, Estepa, Baena, Sierra Magina and Sierra de Cazorla are just some of the area’s oil producers who have come to show off their wares. Associations including the Spanish Olive Town Association (AEMO) and Olearum Association are also present. Tourism and Marina councillor Adolfo Fernandez explained that the event runs from March 5-8 and almost 15,000 visitors were registered at last year’s edition of the fair. Organised by Benalmadena Town hall with collaboration from Sabor a Malaga, the fair is a four-day celebration with activities based on the culture of olives and oil. Cooking shows will promote the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil with well-known prestigious chefs taking part, and workshops, oil tastings, talks and children’s games also planned for the event. Oil tourism also has its mention, with presentations and speeches on the opportunities Andalucia oil mills offer for income and to spread the culture of Liquid Gold. HOCKEY PLAYERS: From Holland and Belgium were welcomed to Benalmadena by the mayor. Hockey teams travel to train at Retamar TwELVE dutch and Belgian hockey teams spent February training at the Campo de Retamar sports installations in preparation for winter season matches. A total of almost 300 people including players and technicians were involved in the visit, organised by Benalmadena hockey Club in collaboration with the municipal sports department, and are believed to have brought an additional income of more than €300,000 to the town. Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez, along with sports councillor Juan Olea and hockey club president Andres Perez, welcomed the young players to the area and expressed her hopes that they would enjoy their visit to Benalmadena. Garcia Galvez thanked Benalmadena hockey Club for organising the visit and stressed the importance of this type of initiative to promote the area and beat seasonal tourism slumps. The teams held a number of friendly matches during their stay as part of their preparation for the second part of the season, with a number of both male and female teams seen on the Retamar fields. Upgrades underway in several neighbourhoods the public Works department of benalmadena visited various sites to check on the renovation work that is currently taking place across the town. in particular, they visited the cleaning and upgrading works being carried out in nueva torrequebrada, which have been warmly welcomed by local residents. the initiative, launched by the council, has involved the effort of 20 different workers and others from the company gsc, who are renovating the pavement, tree pits, and cleaning the area. “the works will continue until all citizens’ requests are taken care of,” said head of the department, concha cifrian. in addition, other areas are undergoing renovations, such as the carvajal residential complex. MARCH 2015 BENALMADENA MONTHLY 5 UKRAINIANS ABROAD: Expats from the Easter European country enjoy a day of sports in Arroyo de la Miel. Ukrainian expats have a great day A RECENT event held at the municipal sports centre in Arroyo de la Miel for Ukrainian expatriates was a great success, with a turn-out of more than 200 people. Supported by the Ukrainian consulate and with collaboration from Benalmadena sports department, the sports and co-existence day was organised by the Provincial Ukrainian Residents’ Association and included a number of sports competitions and a party with traditional dancing and food. An ambulance the group had obtained to be sent as a donation to Ukraine was presented at the event. Mayor Paloma Garcia Galvez, who attended the event with councillor Juan Olea, said there had been a great turnout, and thanked the organisers for choosing Benalmadena as the venue to hold their meet-up. ECOLOGICAL FAIR AGREEMENT: One of the town’s main commercial attractions. Organic market to stay in Arroyo MAYOR of Benalmadena, Paloma Garcia Galvez and the Ecological Association of Guadalhorce have renewed the agreement to keep hosting the ecological market in the town. The market, which is held every third Sunday of the month at the Plaza Pueblosol in Arroyo de la Miel, is organised by the Commerce department and has been a great success in terms of organisation and participation. The market seeks to encourage the consumption of organic, healthy and environmentally friendly food, with around 20 different stands and a wide programme of activities, aimed at boosting the commercial activity of the area. “The Ecological Fair has become one of our main commercial attractions, registering great success every year and drawing not only locals, but also citizens from other towns around Malaga, who attend the event to acquire organic products of the highest quality,” said the mayor. 6 BENALMADENA MONTHLY MARCH 2015 New waste bins installed BENALMAdENA’S Cleaning works department has placed 28 new waste bins around Arroyo de la Miel. Specifically, the bins will be located at Avenida de la Constitucion and Federico Garcia Lorca. The new equipment has been paid for by the Commonwealth of Costa del Sol Occidental and have bags attached for owners to clean up after their pets. “These new bins will be located in the busiest streets of Arroyo de la Miel, especially near traffic lights. From the Cleaning works department, we are encouraging initiatives seeking to improve and beautify our town,” said head of the department, Jose Miguel Murial.
