Today you’ll hear variations of Hawaiian music that are as diverse as the islands’ mix of cultures — everything from rock ‘n roll and rap, to jazz and a Hawaiian form of reggae known as ‘Jawaiian’. Hawaiian music is celebrated in festivals and one very popular event is the annual ‘Ukulele Festival in Waikīkī (July). Brought to Hawai‘i by Portuguese immigrants in the late 19th century, the ‘uke’ is still a fundamental part of the musical landscape, not simply on stage but also at family picnics and on the beach. Hawai‘i Island’s Kona Slack Key Festival (September) pays tribute to a uniquely local way of playing the guitar — another Hawaiian music staple. SEE A 4O-TON BALLERINA Visit Hawai‘i from November to April — they’re prime whale-watching months, when protected humpback whales (locally known as kohola) migrate to Hawai‘i’s warmer waters. From Kaua‘i’s Kīlauea Lighthouse or O‘ahu’s Makapu‘u Lighthouse see whales perform tail slaps, spy hops and other playful moves. Or head to Hawai‘i Island’s Kohala Coast where the whales put on quite a show. On Moloka‘i and Lāna‘i the best vantage spots are on the south shore. If you’d like to take a more active role in helping these majestic mammals, join the Pacific Whale Foundation for the Great Whale Count or World Whale Day, both on Maui. A large number of whale-watching excursions are available. O‘ahu’s Wild Dolphin Foundation reports: ‘Hawaiian ancestors lived deeply interconnected to each other, the land and the sea. Dolphin (Nai‘a) were considered by some to be one form of the spiritual manifestation of the god, Kanaloa. Our very existence depends upon healthy oceans. Dolphins and other cetaceans represent a critical piece to this huge ecosystem and in a world where so much that is wild and free has already been lost to us, we must leave these beautiful mammals free to swim as they will and must.’ DO !* VE SI d sl an rM agnum, P.I . or called it - “ The Hottest Helicopter Ride on Earth! ” u lica Fl y i n ou ea gl Vol cano, Bi p Re 14 DISCOVER HAWAI‘I *The Travel Channel N Hawai‘i is home to spinner, bottlenose, spotted and rough-toothed dolphins. Several companies in Hawai‘i offer dolphin-watching cruises that sometimes include a snorkelling option. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration advises swimmers to stay at least 46 metres away from wild dolphins and turtles (see guidelines at nmfs. noaa.gov/pr/education/hawaii). However, while you are not allowed to approach wild dolphins, they may choose to approach boats and swimmers. If you’re planning to go on a dolphin-watching cruise, bring binoculars. Besides dolphins, you might also spot green sea turtles (honu), flying fish (malolo) and whales (kohola) from November to April. F EXCL -OF U au GO WILD RS Kīl There are places in Hawai‘i where the water is so clear it’s like snorkelling in glass. Beneath the sun-kissed surface lies a glittering world where butterfly fish flutter from coral to coral and rainbow-coloured wrasse scoot by. Every island has its own undersea community. Kaua‘i’s Makua Beach, also known as ‘Tunnels’, is famous for its expansive lagoon. Five km off Maui, the crescent-shaped Molokini crater boasts more than 250 species of tropical fish. On Lāna‘i, Hulopo‘e Bay is protected from currents, while just off KalokoHonokohau on Hawai‘i Island, night snorkelling with manta rays feels almost magical. A number of tour operators feature snorkelling excursions to ‘turtle towns’ or ‘turtle cleaning stations’ where turtles like to congregate to have their shells cleaned by surgeonfish and other algae eaters (who feed on the algae build-up on turtle shells). SURF SAFETY Do your research Hawai‘i beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. They are also among the most dangerous because of large waves and strong currents. Visit hawaibeachsafety.com/oahu to find a list of recommended beaches for the days on which you wish to swim. The site will also highlight active alerts, beaches temporarily closed due to dangerous conditions and lifeguardpatrolled beaches. The goal of Hawaii Beach Safety is to give beach users timely and accurate information so that they can select a beach destination that matches their ocean skill level. You are encouraged to use this site to make an aware and informed decision based on the latest information. When you get to the beach, be sure to check with lifeguards regarding the latest conditions and hazards. Lifeguards are stationed at the most popular beaches. Remember, it is far better to recognise that a beach is too dangerous and move to another, than to attempt entering the ocean and risk injury. North Shore beaches Please note that on the North Shore during the winter months — from November to February — the massive ocean waves can swell up to nine metres or more so stay onshore. These conditions are for experienced surfers only. Stretching for more than 11 kms, the beaches of the North Shore host the world’s premier surfing competitions during the peak winter months, including the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (November to December). Stroll in the thick sands of Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) and Sunset Beach — but just leave the surfing to the pros over winter. However, from May to September the waves subside, creating a more tranquil atmosphere for surfing, swimming and sunbathing. DISCOVER HAWAI‘I 79 The Hawaiian Islands: Hawai‘i Island SPOTLIGHT ON HAWAI‘I VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK HOME TO ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST ACTIVE VOLCANOES Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is the home of Kīlauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. Founded in 1916, the Park encompasses 134,760 hectares from the summit of Maunaloa to the sea. Here you’ll find 241 km of hiking trails through volcanic craters, scalded deserts and rainforests in addition to a museum, a walk-in lava tube and two active volcanoes: Maunaloa, which last erupted in 1984; and Kīlauea which has been erupting since 3 January 1983. The extraordinary natural diversity of the park was recognised in 1980 when it was named a World Biosphere site by UNESCO and in 1987 when the park was again honoured as a World Heritage site. Kīlauea is sometimes called ‘the world’s only drive-in volcano.’ This prolific volcano currently produces 101,139 to 496,961 cubic metres of lava per day — enough to resurface a 32 km long, two-lane road daily. Here are other essential Park attractions: Kilauea Visitor Center (Open daily 7.45 am to 5 pm) Begin your visit at the Kilauea Visitor Center where you can watch an hourly film from 9 am to 4 pm to introduce you to the park. Pick up maps, learn about the park’s hikes and get the latest eruption updates here. Crater Rim Drive The 17 km drive circles Kīlauea Caldera. Driving around this loop will take you to the park’s main attractions: the Kīlauea Overlook, Jaggar Museum, Halema‘uma‘u Crater, Devastation Trail, Kīlauea Iki Crater Overlook and the Thurston Lava Tube. 80 DISCOVER HAWAI‘I QUICK FACTS What: a huge national park and home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes Where: 45 minutes’ drive south of Hilo on the east coast of Hawai‘i Island More information: nps.gov/havo Thomas A Jaggar Museum (Open daily 8.30 am to 5 pm) Thomas A Jaggar pioneered the study of volcanology at Kīlauea. Here you can find geologic displays and videos about volcanoes. Halema‘uma‘u Crater Steam vents plume from this massive crater — known as the home of Pele, the volcano goddess. Thurston Lava Tube (Nahuku) Walk through a 500-year old lava cave formed when an underground channel of molten lava drained from its cooled walls forming a massive hollow chamber. A tropical rainforest awaits at the end of the tube. Pu‘u‘Ō‘ō Vent Currently Kīlauea lava activity isn’t centered in its caldera (the large depression at the top of the volcano) but at the Pu‘u‘Ō‘ō Vent in the East Rift Zone. Sometimes Pu‘u‘Ō‘ō lava floods underground tubes that empty dramatically into the sea. If your timing is right, you can watch this spectacle at the end of Chain of Craters Road or from the new Kalapana viewing site outside the Park. Chain of Craters Road (Ranger station opens daily 10.00 am to 9 pm) Veering south of Crater Rim Drive is Chain of Craters Road. This 1,128 metre drive eventually ends where a lava flow has literally overtaken the road. Volcano House Hotel Overlooking Halema‘uma‘u Crater, the hotel has been operating since 1846. Even Mark Twain once stayed here. The hotel has recently undergone renovations. GENERAL TIPS What to pack: Bring food and water since there are limited facilities in the park. Dress appropriately with shoes, long pants and a jacket. Bring binoculars and a flashlight at night. Safety: Please stay on marked routes and heed warning signs. There is a danger of harmful volcanic gases and unstable land in these areas. Planning: Allow plenty of time for your trip. To maximise your experience consider staying at Volcano House, in nearby Volcano Village, or Hilo (only 45 minutes away). The drive to and from Kona is about three hours each way. In some cases drivers will need to be more than 25 years of age and in possession of a major credit card. • It’s best to pre-arrange car hire prior to leaving Australia to avoid disappointment. • Rental cars offer real value as they provide the freedom and flexibility to experience what each island has to offer. • Some car hire companies offer free shuttles for customers picking up vehicles. • Remember to drive on the right-hand side of the road. • You’ll find that most major roads are well maintained. • Please ‘drive with Aloha’ (slowly and without the horn as it’s considered rude) and observe speed limits. Avoid tailgating and the local rule for single-lane bridges is to yield to on-coming traffic. However, if you’re the on-coming traffic and there is a line waiting on the other side, stop and let your neighbours cross. • On O‘ahu use ‘TheBus’ (thebus.org) and Waikiki Trolley (waikikitrolley.com) — they’re easy, fun and affordable ways to see Waikīkī and Honolulu. • With little to no public transport on neighbouring islands, a hire car (or combination of hire car and tours) is recommended. • A ferry operates daily to/from Lāhainā (Maui) to Moloka‘i (90 minute trip) and Lāna‘i (60 minute trip). • Taxis are available at airports and key tourist spots. Credit cards are not commonly accepted and long taxi rides are costly. Taxis charge approximately US$45 for the 30-minute journey from Honolulu International Airport to Waikīkī. • In key tourist spots, shuttles operate between airports and hotels/resorts, and between resorts and nearby shopping precincts. Some are free of charge and others incur a small fee (check with your hotel/resort for details). • Helicopter tours are a great way to see the particularly scenic spots such as Waimea Canyon (Kaua‘i) and inaccessible areas such as the Nāpali Coast (Kaua‘i). ETIQUETTE TIPS Respect property marked with kapu (‘off limits’). Remember to mālama kai (respect plants and animals). Make sure to mālama ‘aīna (respect the land) by staying on trails and not disturbing plants. Properly dispose of opala (rubbish). Observe smoke-free laws which prohibit smoking in enclosed public areas. • Passenger submarines are a novel, comfortable and safe way to explore the wonders of Hawai‘i’s tropical waters. • Motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles are available for hire. US standards on tipping apply: Bar – US$0.50-$1 per drink Concierge – US$1 for calling a taxi Free shuttle – US$1 per short trip per person Housekeeping – US$1 per bed per night (leave it on the bedside table each morning) Kids’ clubs – US$15 a day Luggage porters – US$1 per bag Room service – 10-15% of total bill Taxi – 15% of fare Tour guides – US$5-$10 per half day per person/couple Restaurants – 15-20% Note that a service charge may be automatically added to a bill, especially for party sizes of six or more. Check your bill, before tipping, to see if a service charge has already been included. Cruising – A small gratuity is generally built into the cost of your cruise (this is split between various service departments onboard such as housekeeping and food/beverage). At your discretion, you may still like to leave a tip for extra special service received from housekeepers, waiters, bar staff, kids’ club attendants and others. BASIC COSTS AREA TELEPHONE CODE FOR HAWAI‘I: 808 INTERNET & WIRELESS SERVICES Many hotels in Hawai‘i provide internet or Wi-Fi connectivity for their guests. Check with your hotel regarding charges, if any. In addition you’ll often find free Wi-Fi available in cafes and restaurants. If you wish to use your laptop, check that it can be used at a voltage of 110V. STAYING IN TOUCH BY PHONE Check with your mobile phone provider regarding international roaming charges as they can be expensive. Many travellers opt to disable international roaming and data downloading when they are overseas (consult your mobile phone provider for instructions). One way to keep your mobile bill under control while away is to buy a pre-paid set-value SIM card prior to departure or on arrival. In both cases you simply get a new number and SIM card to place in your existing handset while you’re away from home. You can also use phone cards and credit cards to make international calls (convenience stores across Hawai‘i sell phone cards). CAMPING Many sites are available. Permits and fees are required. Strong, hidden currents can overpower even experienced swimmers and standing on rocky outcrops can be dangerous due to sudden, powerful rogue waves. Conditions in the water constantly change. Apply sunscreen often (year-round). Wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Remember: • waves come in sets and conditions can be calm for up to 20 minutes between dangerous sets of waves • swim only where lifeguards are on duty • do not fight a rip current (keep calm, float, wave for help and go with the current to conserve energy) • use the buddy system – never swim alone and know your limits • when in doubt, don’t go out • nude bathing and nude sun-bathing are prohibited across Hawai‘i. GENERAL SAFETY TIPS Be as security-conscious as you would be at home. Don’t leave valuables unattended or in plain sight in a hire car, on the beach, or in restaurants or lobbies (lock them in the hotel/room safe). Take only essential items to the beach and put keys/valuables in a waterproof bag and keep them with you. Carry little cash and leave extra cash/credit cards in the hotel safe. Make use of travellers’ cheques, ATM facilities and/or credit cards.
