Lehre Weiterbildung Forschung Portrait Professor Dr. Thomas E. Jackson Why do Children, Teachers, and Parents Love to do Philosophy? Exciting things have been happening lately on the island of Oahu, Hawai‘i: The Dalai Lama was invited to Honolulu by „Pillars of Peace“, and because he had heard about schools – elementary as well as high schools – doing philosophy with children („p4c“), he wanted to know how this was done. So he visited Kailua High School where students presented their questions about peace and compassion to the Dalai Lama to answer. Dr. Jackson is the initiator of this special way of doing philosophy together in an intellectually safe community, which was why the Dalai Lama visited the local high school. „Dr. J“, as everyone calls him, will now be coming to Switzerland and to PHTG to talk about his way of doing p4c in schools from Kindergarden to graduate school. He will present some examples on video (with German subtitles) and explain why children and teachers as well as parents just love to do philosophy Hawaiian style. Professor Dr. Thomas Jackson (“Dr. J”) has been a member of the p4c („little p philosophy for child- Zu dieser öffentlichen Veranstaltung sind alle Studierenden und Lehrenden der PHTG und der Uni ren“) Hawai‘i family since 1984. He received his PhD in Comparative Philosophy from the University Konstanz sowie alle weiteren Interessierten eingeladen. Wir wünschen einen Kopf und Herz erfri- of Hawai‘i in 1979. There he learned from P4C’s creator, Matthew Lipman, an inspiring approach to working with children, a provocative new way of thinking about philosophy and an exciting development in education. Since 1984 he has been passionately committed to the de- Prof. Dr. Priska Sieber, Rektorin Eva Zoller Morf, Dozentin für Kinderphilosophie velopment of p4c in Hawai‘i and around the world. In 1987 he became a full time Specialist with the Department of Philosophy, UH Manoa and Director of the Philosophy in the Schools Project, a joint effort between the Department of Philosophy and the Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE). For Programm 15 years the DOE funded philosophy department graduate students who worked in public school 19.00 Uhr classrooms throughout the state of Hawai’i, assisting teachers in developing intellectually safe classroom communities of inquiry. The Philosophy in the Schools Project has been supplanted by the new p4c Hawai’i Center which is better able to handle the continued growth and demand for p4c. Dr. J works in classrooms with teachers and their students, regularly offers courses in p4c both on and off the UH Manoa campus, serves on dissertation committees of students engaged in research on p4c in Hawai’i and abroad. Dr. J has been a conference and workshop presenter and keynote speaker locally, nationally, and internationally in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Brazil, Australia, Austria and Israel. www.p4chawaii.org Begrüssung durch die Rektorin Prof. Dr. Priska Sieber Vortrag und Präsentation von Video-Beispielen von Prof. Dr. Thomas E.
