Olbrich Botanical Society Foundation serves as the steward and investment manager
of Olbrich’s endowment. In 2011, the Foundation contributed $153,142 to Olbrich
Botanical Society’s annual operating budget. This is equivalent to 4.5 % of the average
balance of the fund in the previous twelve quarters.

Olbrich participated in National Public Gardens Day, sponsored by the American Public Garden
Association, and Wisconsin Museums Week sponsored by the Wisconsin Federation of Museums.
Olbrich Botanical Society and the City of Madison
Parks Division partner in the operation of Olbrich
Botanical Gardens. In 2011, the City of Madison
spent $1,509,867 in direct costs for Olbrich Botanical
Gardens which was offset by $275,807 in revenue
earned resulting in a net expenditure of $1,234,060.

Supporting our Community
Olbrich supported our community in 2011 directly and also partnered with Madison area nonprofits to improve the quality of live in our community.

Hosted Physician’s Plus’ Polar Dash, a winter activity that promotes outdoor exercise and healthy eating to area families.
Sponsored 25 Free Concerts (donations were accepted) during the year that featured a variety of local musicians.
Participated in Wisconsin Public Television’s Garden Expo – a 3-day garden and gardener extravaganza at the Alliant Energy Center.
Contributed 538.5 pounds of fresh produce from the Children’s Kitchen Garden to the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin.
Hosted and promoted 25 free flower shows and plant sales organized by garden clubs and plant societies.
Added a B-Cycle station, which is a community bike-sharing program by Trek Bicycle Store. Olbrich’s station (the farthest east) links up to a network of B-Cycle stations throughout central Madison.
Provided free tickets for Blooming Butterflies to Madison Public Library as ‘rewards’ for their youth summer reading program. In addition, the Gardens hosted the free family celebratory concert that Madison Public Library sponsored for its youth readers.
Partnered with Wisconsin Community Bank to pilot a free ticket program for Blooming Butterflies. The Funds provided free admission tickets and transportation for 10 area community organizations that brought 433 under-served youth and children to the event.
Joined a new local business association, Atwood Winnebago Area Business Association. In addition, Olbrich’s Growing Gifts continues to participate in the Dane Buy Local initiative.
Contributed household memberships to 90 area not-for-profit organizations for their silent auctions and raffles.
Designed two free flower shows, Spring Flower Show and Quilts in Bloom, for community enjoyment (donations accepted.)

The Arts in the Garden
Four bronze sculptures, donated by local
artist Rose Van Vranken, were installed
in the outdoor gardens. Two Bud Forms
were added to the Sunken Garden pool
and Flame #1 and Flame #2 were installed
along nearby walkways.
Olbrich Education partnered with the Greater Madison Writing Project (GMWP), part of the
National Writing Project – a successful model for professional development that helps teachers
across grade levels and subject areas learn strategies to teach students to become accomplished
writers and learners. Olbrich hosted the GMWP Summer Teacher Institute that immersed
participants in writing, reading, and teacher inquiry workshops to prepare them to be teacherleaders in the future.
As part of the Olbrich as Art Invitational Exhibit (Jan 16 – April 3) Madison’s Poet Laureate Fabu
was commissioned to write four poems as part of the Exhibit.

A Big Celebration
Olbrich celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the
opening of the Adolph C. and Eugenie Mayer
Bolz Conservatory in November 2011. Author,
Adventurer, Educator and Tropical Rainforest
Canopy Biologist Dr. Margaret Lowman, aka
Canopy Meg, was the keynote speaker. She
presented a program for families called: Monkeys,
Millipedes and Medicine and a program for
adults, Out On A Limb. Canopy Meg was also
the guest-of-honor at Party Under the Palms – a
celebratory evening in the Conservatory. The Tiny
Take-Home Terrariums family activity was a hit and
the Treasures of the Rainforest exhibit highlighted
how plants from the tropical rainforests contribute
to our lives. A Reunion Luncheon was held that
brought together donors, volunteers, and former
and current staff who shared their memories from
twenty years ago.

People in the Gardens
Olbrich counted 245,183 visitors in 2011, who entered between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm or
participated in events. Visitors who take advantage of evening hours between April and October
are in addition to this number.
Olbrich volunteers gave 26,235 hours of volunteer service (by 617 individual volunteers and seven
volunteer groups). 81% of Olbrich’s 2011 volunteers participated in previous years – which is a
commendable retention rate. Seventy-four current volunteers have given more than 1,000 hours of
service in their careers at Olbrich Gardens. That is equivalent to nearly two full-time employees at
work for twenty years. Thank you to all of Olbrich’s incredible volunteers!

Teaching About Plants & Gardens
Olbrich Botanical Society education staff added a new module to the Explorer School Program.
Tropical Explorer joins Ecology Explorer and Botany Explorer for school education programs. The
Explorer series is designed to help teachers meet the science curriculum goals for grades K-3 students.
In addition to the Explorer series, 44 youth and family classes were offered for families. In the
Children’s Kitchen Garden School Program, a collaboration with Madison School and Community
Recreation, 131 students participated. This is all in addition to the 139 adult classes offered by
Olbrich Botanical Gardens Education.
Education staff and volunteer tour guides collaborated to offer free outdoor Guided Garden Strolls on
Sundays, May through September, which were enjoyed by 418 adults and 29 children.
Olbrich’s Schumacher Library staff and volunteers hosted 4,093 library users, answered 1,499
garden and gardening questions, and logged 1,403 volunteer hours.
Olbrich Gardens was featured in the New York Times Frugal Traveler blog: My Trip to Madison:
Bikes, Brews, Burgers and a B&B, describes Olbrich Gardens as “shockingly lovely, a colorful, calm
escape from a city that there’s not much need to escape from.”

Guided Garden Stroll
Sustainability for a Green Future
Sustainable alternatives to bluegrass lawns continue to be a feature of Olbrich Botanical Gardens
landscapes. Two sedge meadows were added to the Perennial Garden and the Prairie Dropseed
Meadow was extended. In addition, the Sunken Garden turf areas were seeded with a fescue/
bluegrass mix that requires fewer inputs of water and fertilizer. Olbrich’s traditional turf areas – in
particular the Great Circle – were placed on an organic lawn care program that includes applications
of compost tea. In addition a fourth Rain Garden was added to redirect runoff away from the storm
sewers and Lake Monona.
Olbrich’s maintenance staff improved service to existing HVAC equipment to maximize efficiency
and installed a more efficient water heater to ‘temper’ conservatory and greenhouse plant water.
They also installed timers so exhaust systems don’t operate when the building is empty and added
ventilation and insulation to the Atrium attic. In collaboration with the City of Madison Engineering
Department and funds from the US Department of Energy, all indoor light fixtures were replaced with
energy efficient LED lighting; parking lot lighting was replaced with LED fixtures that dim when there
is no motion; and outdoor garden lighting is being replaced with LED fixtures as funds are available.
Maintenance also participates in MGE’s Energy Steward program, which tracks daily utility data and
helps staff make changes in operations to reduce utility use.
Conservatory staff developed a drip irrigation for use with the fall mum and aster crops that
decreased water usage by nearly one-half. Approximately 30,000 gallons were saved.
Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) installed a ‘Solar Sunflower’ at the Gardens
that contributes energy to the power grid and is a great solar demonstration
project. Visit www.mge.com to get a live look at how much energy is

Technology for a Green Future
Olbrich Botanical Society introduced a monthly e-newsletter with 4,464 subscribers in the first year,
that focused on behind-the-scenes stories and covered topics that relate to sustainable horticulture
practices.
Olbrich’s website, www.olbrich.org, attracted 178,597 visits in 2011.
Olbrich’s Growing Gifts added a computerized inventory system with a point of sales software that
provides a continuous inventory and tracks sales. The system helps staff order product more efficiently
and effectively. In addition, special events tickets and Bolz Conservatory admissions tickets may now
be sold and tracked efficiently through Growing Gifts’ software.
Olbrich Botanical Society public relations and marketing staff began to ‘tweet’ on behalf of the
Gardens through Twitter.

Olbrich Botanical Society members are key contributors to the success of the Gardens. As of
December 31, 2011, member households numbered 6,267 and the total number of membership
cards issued was 9,566.
Rhapsody in Bloom committee members worked hard to improve the silent and live auction at the
event and raised $12,640.50 through the auctions alone. In addition, the Spring Show Bamboo
Bicycle Raffle raised $3,473!
