Thank you, Dad:
A Daughter’s
Journey from
Cancer Patient to
Cancer Survivor
by Jamie Valvano
I never understood why my Dad spent the
precious last months of his life making plans for
the future. I envision him hunched over a pad of
paper frantically scribbling his dreams to raise
money for cancer research. There are horrible
scenes that I do not wish to retell, and yet in
the midst of the sadness there were moments
of brilliance.
• Witnessing the obvious bond between John
Saunders and my Dad while they worked
together at ESPN.
• Bob Lloyd, my Dad’s college roommate, sitting
by the bedside and running a cold cloth over his
friend’s feverish head.
• Frank McCann, going to medical appointments
with my Dad and talking about a celebrity golf
tournament that they could host every year.
• Dad sitting in his home office receiving a
weekly phone call from Dick Vitale telling him he
had better keep fighting.
4
• Coach K stopping by when Dad was getting
treatment at Duke to discuss the upcoming
season.
• Geoff Mason, a colleague at ESPN, traveling
to our home in North Carolina simply to drop a
donation and share a hug.
• The closed door conversations that he had with
his older brother Nick.
There are many touching stories to recount
about special people that my Dad recruited to
be a part of his team. However, if I am brutally
honest, I must admit I was jealous of the
individuals that took my father away from his
family. What was the point of establishing some
charity that would do nothing for my own Dad?
I am a seven year breast cancer survivor. As
a result of my treatment, I lost my hair, my
womanly figure, my youth, and at times my hope.
I inherited a genetic mutation from my Dad
that increased my chances of developing many
forms of cancer. There was a moment during my
struggle when I decided it would just be easier
to give up. As I held my bald head in my hands
and sobbed, I heard my father’s words softly
whispered in my ear. . .
“We are starting The V Foundation
for Cancer Research. It may
not save my life, it may save
my children’s lives, it may save
someone you love.”
It was not until I became a cancer patient myself
that I understood the sacrifice that my father
had made so that others would have hope. The V
Foundation funds life-saving research. The type
of research that discovered my genetic mutation
enabled my doctors to provide the best care,
and increased my chances of survival.
Thank you to the old and new friends that
continue to support and further our mission.
Thank you, Dad, for never giving up and sharing
your spirit with cancer patients and families that
need a little bit of Jimmy V to battle on. I pray
that your grandchildren, Jake, Peter, Grant, Allie,
and Rocco will never have to even hear the word
cancer in their lifetime.
*John Saunders, Bob Lloyd, Dick Vitale, Coach
K, Geoff Mason and Nick Valvano were all part
of the original Board of Directors of The V
Foundation and continue to be active to this day.
Frank McCann is Executive Director of the Jimmy
V Celebrity Golf Classic.

OUR STORY
In 1983, Jim Valvano and his sixth seeded NC State basketball
team stole the spotlight when they won the NCAA National
Championship. Ten years later, Jim stole the spotlight again
by announcing the formation of The V Foundation for Cancer
Research. Less than two months later, cancer took the life of
a great coach and man. Jim Valvano was 46 years old when
he lost his battle with cancer.
For the last 20 years, his memory and his dream of a world
without cancer have lived on in The V Foundation.
The V Foundation started as an idea… an idea proposed by
Jim’s friend and former ESPN Chairman Steve Bornstein. At a meal with Jim and his wife Pam, Steve brought up the
idea of ESPN assisting to form a Foundation dedicated
to saving lives through cancer research. Jim seized the
opportunity. Shortly after this now historic meeting, Jim
announced at the inaugural ESPY awards, in one of the
greatest speeches of our time, that together with ESPN
a new foundation was being formed to support cancer
research. The inspiring words Jim offered as he accepted
the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage have served as the soul
of The V Foundation since its inception.
The “Don’t Give Up… Don’t Ever Give Up!”® mentality helped
Jim as he battled a terrible disease, and it has continued
to motivate The V Foundation to achieve its mission. But
the sentiment has never been more meaningful than it is
now. While advances in research allow scientists to identify
triggers that advance cancer, develop innovative therapeutic
techniques and help cancer patients live longer, there is
still work to be done. This work will not be completed until
there is an end to cancer, and The V Foundation is working
tirelessly to meet this goal.
8
The V Foundation is well established in the scientific
community, and its research program is guided by an
all-volunteer Scientific Advisory Board comprised of
top physicians and research scientists from prominent
universities and cancer centers nationwide. The Board
reviews and recommends top-rated research projects for
funding to advance the dream Jim shared with millions —
a world without cancer.
Through funding three types of grants, V Scholar,
Translational and Designated, The V Foundation helps
members of the scientific community get their start in the
field of research and later to move research quickly from
the laboratory into clinical studies. In the early stage of his
battle with cancer, Jim recognized that these were critical
elements necessary for cancer research and treatment.

BOB LLOYD: CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Bob Lloyd has been a volunteer member of the
Board of Directors since its inception in 1993 and
has served as Chairman of the Board of The V
Foundation since 1994.
Lloyd’s life was forever changed when he met
Jim Valvano at Rutgers University. “We were
college roommates, teammates and in the
military together.” In fact, Team Captains Lloyd
and Valvano led Rutgers to their first-ever
postseason basketball tournament in 1967. Their
friendship quickly grew beyond the basketball
court, however, and a lifelong relationship was
formed. “Jim had a million best friends; I was one
of them.” In 1993, Valvano was diagnosed with
cancer and formed The V Foundation for Cancer
Research with the help of ESPN. He called upon
his friend, Bob, to serve on the Board, where he
has tapped the legacy of that friendship and
shared it with countless others in his leadership
at The V Foundation.
Bob Lloyd
Lloyd cites two significant strengths of The V
Foundation as its voluntary Scientific Advisory
Board and its voluntary Board of Directors. The
Scientific Advisory Board is composed of leading
doctors and researchers from across the country
which selects the research projects to be funded
by the Foundation, while the Board of Directors
governs the Foundation. “I have been very
fortunate during my time as Chairman to work
with these two outstanding boards. These men
and women have devoted countless hours to The
V Foundation and made enormous contributions
to its growth.”
In the last 20 years, Lloyd’s leadership has been
instrumental in transforming The V Foundation.
From its early days as an organization granting
$229,000 in one year to one which currently
grants nearly $15 million annually, Lloyd has
played a critical role in shaping the organization
while remaining true to the wishes of his college
friend. He has worked tirelessly to bring more
people into the fold, as donors, as board members,
and as staff. Lloyd’s passionate commitment
to The V Foundation’s mission spurred him to
dedicate his time, resources and business acumen
to initiatives organization-wide, particularly to the
Wine Celebration in Napa Valley.
But perhaps Lloyd’s greatest impact on the
Foundation that bears his friend’s name is the vital
role he has played in developing and growing The
V Foundation’s endowment. This fund enables the
Foundation to award 100% of direct donations
to cancer research. Someone once said, “When
you score a goal, or hit a three, you don’t do it for
yourself, you do it for the team because the name
in the front of the shirt is more important than the
one on the back.” Bob Lloyd has personified this
sentiment for the last 20 years.

Jim Valvano’s
Growing Team
and Mission
at ESPN
Jim Valvano was a man with incredible passion.
It was in his face, in his voice and in his every
gesture. Everyone who ever met him, played for
him, saw him coach or watched him on ESPN
could feel his burning passion for life.
It was on an ESPN media conference call in the
fall of 1992 when Jim announced he had cancer.
He recognized the opponent, the challenge
and the stats. Instead of retreating, he stated a
mission, “We need more money for research.”
Soon after, then ESPN President Steve Bornstein,
now NFL Network President and Chief Executive
Officer, and ESPN head of marketing John
Lack joined Jim and his wife Pam for a casual
meal. Bornstein proposed the formation of a
charity. Jim mulled over the idea, and a few days
later contacted Steve with his thoughts on how
the organization should be structured. Through
this collaboration between ESPN and Jim
Valvano, The V Foundation for Cancer Research
was born, displaying Jim’s passion and ESPN’s
commitment to a greater good.
10
Jimmy V’s passion lives on in the people of
ESPN who give freely of their time, resources
and creativity to support the mission of The
V Foundation. They do so in ways big and
small, all year round. The ESPN V Committee
was established by ESPN Executive Chairman
George Bodenheimer, who expanded ESPN’s
involvement in fundraising for the Foundation.
Growing numbers of Team ESPN members
across the company also support The V
Foundation, and current ESPN President
John Skipper continues the commitment.
Every spring ESPN employees are encouraged
to “Show Your Spirit!” by wearing a jersey or
hat from their favorite teams to work. During
these days, the Bristol campus and ESPN offices
across the country are awash in team colors,
college pride, and smiling folks who love their
sports. And they keep the spirit of Jimmy V
alive by donating five dollars or more to The V
Foundation.
When The ESPYS (sports awards show) take
place – the event at which Jim announced the
Foundation during his inspirational speech,
ESPN employees and commentators become
ambassadors for The V Foundation, reaching out
to ESPN’s loyal and generous fans. The annual
ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic in Los Angeles is the
product of countless volunteer hours donated by
ESPN people. It raises more than $1 million in net
proceeds for cancer research.
The people of ESPN Radio have made the ESPYS
V Foundation Auction a huge success, creatively
packaging fan experiences for sale to the
highest bidders. Everyone from commentators
to staff members at the ESPN Radio owned
and operated stations works together to raise
hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Then there’s “Jimmy V Week” which brings
together employees across ESPN’s many
distribution platforms - ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3,
ESPN.com and ESPN Mobile, as well as
ESPNEWS, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes and ESPN
Classic. They create special content that
shares Jim Valvano’s message with millions of
fans. The week culminates with the Jimmy V
Women’s Basketball Classic and Men’s Basketball
Classic on consecutive nights. Legions of ESPN
commentators spread Jim’s words, stories and
passion. The increased awareness of The V
Foundation’s mission raises more than $1 million
during Jimmy V Week in December.
“Our many initiatives are a shining example of
sports and teamwork whose results go beyond
any game,” says Bodenheimer. “Our employees
continue to bring the same creative thinking and
commitment to The V Foundation that they’ve
applied to shaping our company these 34 years.
I’m extremely proud of their efforts on behalf of
this great cause.”
Bob Lloyd, chairman of The V Foundation Board,
and President Emeritus Nick Valvano often
remark that beyond the fundraising results of
millions of dollars a year, ESPN’s media exposure
has taken the Foundation from a regional nonprofit to a nationally known and valued charity.
Jim’s team continues to grow across the country
and to carry on his mission. And just like his
“Cinderella” N.C. State University team in 1983,
this team will cut down the nets on cancer.

ESTABLISHING THE V FOUNDATION’S ENDOWMENT
Phil Knight
Chairman of the Board, Nike, Inc.
A winning program can’t be built without a
strong foundation. For Jim Valvano to have
coaching success and ultimately a National
Championship at N.C. State he needed the right
assistants, solid recruiting and plenty of support
from the University. The V Foundation could
not make an impact without similarly important
mechanisms in place, including the endowment
fund to cover operating expenses. Having
started one of the most successful companies
in the world, Nike, Inc., Phil Knight knows
the importance of such “seed” money, which
is why he didn’t hesitate to establish The V
Foundation’s endowment fund. “Obviously they
are connected. You can’t do the good work
unless there is funding. The V Foundation had
already established itself for being a very fine
organization and I’m very proud that I did,” said
Knight.
Nike and basketball have been hand-in-hand
for decades. It was 1971 when Knight persuaded
Valvano to take part in the Nike Coaches
Program. At the time, Jim was an up-andcoming coach at Iona College in New York. After
spending part of the summer together, Knight
knew that he had targeted a winner. “‘Win their
hearts as well as their feet,’ was the expression
12
we used. We got to know Jim through this
process. I became a friend of his as well as a
great admirer.” Years later, Pam Valvano would
ask Phil to join the Board of Directors of The
V Foundation, on which he has served with
distinction since 1993. Knight’s personal connection to cancer strikes
close to home. His father, William, died in 1981
after a battle with leukemia. “I’ve known a lot
of friends who have died of cancer. I don’t think
there’s anyone I have ever known personally who
hasn’t been touched by it in some way.” Knight
also knows that if Jim were alive today he’d be
striving for more and pushing to make The V
Foundation achieve greater goals. “I think Jim
would pause for a moment, catch his breath, and
say you’re not doing enough! Honestly, looking
back, he probably would say we can do better,
and he would absolutely be glowing with pride
at what’s been done. If you go back 20 years
and say ‘20 years from now we will have given
out $100 million,’ I don’t think anybody really
thought The V Foundation could do that. But
they did. So it’s fabulous. We can look forward to
the next 20 years. The V Foundation should be
even better!”
Reflections from
The V Foundation’s
Original Board
of Directors
Describe your
relationship with Jim:
Michael Krzyzewski: Jim and I had a very
competitive relationship, but we became great
friends when he stopped coaching. When he was
diagnosed, we were like a brotherhood…as close
as it can get. We were very intimate.
Geoff Mason: I met Jim through his agent when
he decided to pursue a broadcasting career.
I was the executive producer of ABC Sports and
my job was to teach Jim how to do TV. I followed
him to weekend games. He took to broadcasting
like a duck takes to water. In our business, we
try to hire people to be themselves, and Jim
understood that and brought his persona to the
microphone.
Phil Knight: We started our Nike Basketball
Coaches’ program in 1971 and we took about a
dozen coaches. He was the coach at Iona at the
time. He was looked upon as being one of the
promising young coaches. We spent a week with
each of the coaches in the summer…talked to
them, got to know them. We got to know [Jim]
through this process. I became a friend as well as
an admirer.
Dereck Whittenburg: When Jim first arrived at
NCSU, he offered an open invitation to come in
to his office and discuss anything you wanted
with him. I was one of the few players who took
him up on the invitation. Over three years, we
talked about letters written to him, politics,
everything under the sun. We developed a very
close relationship. Our relationship continued to
grow and my affection and admiration for him
continued to grow as I learned more about him.
How did you come to
join The V Foundation
Board of Directors?
Michael Krzyzewski: Jimmy formed The V
Foundation during the last couple of months
of his life. We would laugh, joke and cry at the
hospital together. One night he said “”I want to
try to fund researchers to attack cancer; I want
you to be on my team!” He recruited me during
that time. His wisdom and his ability to think
beyond his life was incredible.
Harry Rhoads: In 1988, I underwent a cancerous
tumor removal operation at the Lombardi
Center at Georgetown University. Jim was the
first person who called me (after the operation)
in the hospital to see how I had done. A few
years later Jim called me to say that he had
just been diagnosed with cancer. We were all
devastated. Soon thereafter he asked if I would
join the board of what would become The V
Foundation.
Dr. Joseph Moore: Jim asked me to. Being a
part of the Board has been a great personal
experience for me. It’s a part of the world you
don’t always see if you’re in the trenches in a
hospital. It’s been a growth experience.
Dereck Whittenburg: Coach Valvano, like he did
everything else, put the Board together before
he passed. I’m the only player who was selected.
He put that collection of individuals together
because he knows we’re fighters and one day
we’ll find a cure for this disease.
13
What’s your
recollection of the
first V Foundation
Board meeting?
What has The
V Foundation done to
make you proud to
be involved?
Michael Krzyzewski: A bunch of Valvano guys
and Bob Lloyd were hammering things out. They
were emotional meetings. We would laugh, cry
and yell at each other. When the meeting was
over, we’d leave hugging and say “Let’s get
this done!” The meetings were honest, they
were emotional, and they were bonding. Our
Foundation has continued to have that bond,
that honesty and that resolve. It’s a win.
Bob Lloyd: The V Foundation invests our
donors’ money wisely. The V Scholar program
is outstanding, keeping the best and brightest
young researchers in the lab allowing them to
get further and larger grants. The government
has dramatically reduced their investment in
translational research, which goes from the lab
to clinical trials. The V Foundation’s Translational
Grant program was established to fill this
important gap. The fact that 100% of direct cash
donations to The V Foundation go to cancer
research is significant. Few foundations in the
world can make this statement. Bob Lloyd: It was interesting, extremely
emotional. People who knew Jim well were close
to Jim and wanted to carry out his mission.
People were passionate about it. Everyone was
committed to do what Jim asked us to do…
raise money to find cures for cancer. From the
beginning, it was a board that wanted to work
hard to carry out Jim’s mission. That same
passion and commitment have carried through
for 20 years. Every V Board member, original and
new, has that same commitment and passion to
fight cancer.
Dr. Robert Bast: Right from the beginning, we
wanted to make a difference to cancer patients
everywhere through research. Research was
a way to accelerate progress and give better
lives to people who couldn’t be cured. We also
wanted to raise public awareness. Jim saw a real
need.
14
Dr. Joseph Moore: Raised a lot of money. That
money has gone in some very targeted, useful
directions. There’s not nearly enough money
going to fund cancer research. We focus on
young investigators. Rescuing some people who
would have been lost to research had it not been
for the Foundation. People who we now fund
are just spectacular young investigators. We
are helping with careers that go on to be very
productive.
Steve Bornstein: I lost my brother and both my
parents to cancer. Scientific funding is the key.
Pam Valvano Strasser: It is amazing to see what
the Foundation has been able to accomplish
in 20 years. People remember Jim not only
for being a basketball coach and winning the
national championship, but for being involved
with helping to find a cure for the disease that
took his life. The magnitude of this Foundation
blows my mind. The people involved are so loyal.
Nick Valvano: I made a promise to my brother
to take this idea and give it light and to prove in
some small way we can make a difference in the
fight against cancer.
What do you think Jim
would have to say
about The V Foundation
today?
Bob Lloyd: “Why haven’t you raised more money
so far?” Jim always thought big. We try to think
big at the Foundation… He’d say, “OK, go out and
raise more.”
Geoff Mason: “I’m very proud of you, but let’s
get to $200 million in half the time!” He’d tell us
to think big and work hard.
Phil Knight: I think Jim would pause for a
moment, catch his breath, and say “you’re not
doing enough!”
Nick Valvano: “We haven’t cut the nets down
yet. We are getting better and we have to keep
working hard.” He would say we are taking too
long to make the progress, and we need to be
more aggressive.
Bob Valvano: “You’re not done. Has anyone died
of cancer this year? Yes. The game’s not over.
Go do more.”
What’s your favorite
Jim quote/saying?
Harry Rhoads: “You plus motivation equals
success.” Bill Cosby: Jim left a very profound, truthful
(ESPY) speech that you can run any time. It is so
prophetic! It’s a gift that he left for us.
Pam Valvano Strasser: My favorite quote is
“Take time every day to laugh, think, and cry.
That’s a heck of a day. That is what you should
do every day.”
Nick Valvano: It’s what Jim said, we can’t ever
give up. Sometimes it’s hard when you hear
about all the people dying. You need to see the
kids who survived and are adults now. You need
to see the people who are living. If we don’t give
up on this fight, whether we cure it or not, we
will make this place a better world to live in.
Steve Bornstein: The whole ESPY speech.
There’s nothing like it! It’s like cancer left
his body.
Why should people
support
The V Foundation?
What does a world
without cancer mean
to you?
Bill Cosby: If you want your money to be well
spent, it’s there.
Bill Cosby: More lives living to the fullest and
certainly more happiness.
Michael Krzyzewski: It wins. The V Foundation
gives every penny; it puts the money to work
without waste. We have teamwork with the
researchers. We celebrate and support the
people on the front lines. We honor them.
Funding from The V Foundation is more than
dollars, it’s a stamp of approval to people who
can get the job done.
Dereck Whittenburg: WOW! I would have my
friend (Jim) back. My father, my brother, my best
friend, my sister-in-law, a lot of friends.
Dr. Robert Bast: People’s personal generosity
can go a long way toward helping in these
tough times. The V Foundation makes both
long and short term investments. Long term
investment is in the V Scholars and investing
in their careers at a critical time. For shorter
term investment, translational research takes
something almost ready to go to the clinic and
making that happen.
Bob Valvano: It would be a dream come true!
Geoff Mason: As a cancer survivor myself, it
would be the realization of my fondest dream for
our world.
Bob Lloyd: We won’t lose friends and loved ones
any more, which would make it a great world.
Bob Valvano: People feel like they are making a
difference when supporting The V Foundation.
It may be in inches instead of miles. But
with enough of those inches we will make a
difference. The V Foundation fights for them!
Pam Valvano Strasser: We need everyone to be
involved so we can make a difference in getting
a cure, so people can stop suffering and losing
loved ones.

TYPES OF GRANTS
In 1994, The V Foundation established the V Scholar
Grant program with the hopes of helping up-and-coming
physician/scientists receive the support and recognition
they need to begin their research careers. Since then,
The V Foundation has awarded more than $32 million to
young, talented researchers, helping them to establish
their own labs for cancer research. The $200,000, twoyear V Scholar Grants are awarded annually. Grant
recipients choose the best and most effective ways to use
their funding.

$31 million to cancer research. Translational Grants help
scientists move their research from their laboratories to
clinics quickly and efficiently so patients have access to the
latest cancer therapies. This grant is for a $600,000, threeyear commitment.
Through the Designated Grant program, The V Foundation
works with communities to identify funding opportunities
specific to that area. Nearly $32 million has been awarded
to local projects, facilities and awareness programs through
Designated Grants since 1994. The Partners in Excellence
and SPORE Supplement (Specialized Program of Research
Excellence) grant programs are examples of Designated
Grants.
Cancer research is a complex and rapidly evolving field.
There are more than 100 types of cancer, and each is

OUR UNIQUE PATH
When attacking a formidable opponent, independence
and flexibility are critical. The V Foundation is uniquely
positioned for strategic investments in cancer research,
funding V Scholars, Translational research and
Designated grants. Moving forward, the Foundation
will create new research grant mechanisms that will
leverage emerging information, making it more widely
available and useful across the spectrum of cancers.
Our unique ability to be strategic, wise and nimble in
our funding allows us to evolve and drive towards our
goal of a world without cancer.
GRANT SPOTLIGHT: V SCHOLAR
Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D.
In 1994, Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D. received The
V Foundation’s first V Scholar Grant. At the time,
Dr. Bepler was beginning his term as an assistant
professor of medicine at the Duke University
Medical Center. Now, Dr. Bepler is in his third
year as president and CEO of the Barbara Ann
Karmanos Cancer Institute at Wayne State
University.
Like so many V Scholars, Dr. Bepler said he’s
grateful that The V Foundation gave him the
support he needed to begin his research career.
The grant helped Dr. Bepler research molecular
changes that affect lung cancer’s progression
and how genetic intervention could improve the
low cure rate in patients.
“In a time when research funding
through federal and state
resources is seemingly out of
reach for starting investigators,
The V Foundation more than ever
lives up to its pledge to “never
give up.” Advances made by
molecular biologists over the past
20 years are now finally resulting
in better treatments and better
outcomes for patients.”
Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D.
His research led to important developments in
the treatment of lung cancer and has allowed
doctors to provide more personalized therapies
to patients.
Since then, Dr. Bepler has been a professor
of medicine and oncology at the University
of South Florida and the director of the
Comprehensive Lung Cancer Research Center,
department chair of Thoracic Oncology and
program leader of the Lung Cancer Program at
the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.
As head of the Karmanos Cancer Institute,
Dr. Bepler is the principle investigator for the
Karmanos Cancer Institute Comprehensive
Cancer Center Support Grant, associate dean of
cancer programs at the Wayne State University
School of Medicine and chair of the Department
of Oncology at the university’s medical school.
Dr. Bepler’s $100,000 V Scholar grant has helped
garner more than $20 million in funding for his
research, including an esteemed Specialized
Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) from
the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Bepler’s career illustrates how the V Scholar
program identifies young, talented researchers
and helps them receive the recognition they
need to develop their research and continue the
quest for cures.

Lisa M. Coussens, Ph.D.
Dr. Lisa M. Coussens has emerged as a leader in
the field of breast cancer research largely based
on her pioneering studies examining immune
cells infiltrating solid tumors and nurture tumor
growth. She was awarded a V Scholar Grant from
The V Foundation in 2000 and has since gone
on to receive significant additional funding for
her cancer research. More recently, Dr. Coussens
was one of only two researchers to receive the
$6.5 million Komen for the Cure Promise grant in
2011, and the only researcher thus far to receive
a second DOD Era of Hope Scholar Award ($4.5
million) based on her pioneering preclinical
studies that are now being tested in human
clinical trials for breast cancer.
Dr. Coussens’ research has
appeared in more than 100 peerreviewed scientific publications,

GRANT SPOTLIGHT: TRANSLATIONAL
Victor Velculescu, M.D., Ph.D. and
Christine Iacobuzio-Donahue, M.D.
Dr. Victor Velculescu at the Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine is a member of
the team who deciphered the first genetic
blueprints for cancer, revealing a building series
of inherited and acquired gene alterations.
His findings explained why seemingly similar
cancers—cancers originating in the same organ—
often responded very differently to therapy and
set the stage for personalized cancer medicine.
Victor Velculescu, M.D., Ph.D.
This research is key to personalized cancer
medicine and has unlocked the molecular
mysteries that drive many leading cancers,
including colon, breast, brain, and pancreas
cancers. It has uncovered mutations and led to
new screening tests for cancers, new cancer
therapies that target malignant cells while
leaving normal cells unharmed, and ways to
predict patients’ responses to particular drugs.
Dr. Christine Iacobuzio-Donahue, also at Johns
Hopkins, collaborated with Velculescu’s team on
a personalized genome sequencing study that
allowed researchers to locate the precise gene
mutation responsible for initiating pancreas
cancer, as well as a corresponding treatment,
with outstanding results. Within pancreas cancer,
Dr. Iacobuzio-Donahue’s goal is to create a
screening method to detect very early cancers,
long before they cause symptoms.
“The V Foundation has been instrumental in
supporting our genomic analyses of pancreatic
cancer. Their funding has allowed us to leverage
additional resources to extend these analyses
to other cancer types and to identify clinically
useful genomic alterations,” says Dr. Velculescu.
“We are at a critical juncture in pancreas
cancer research where we have the tools and
technology to make a big impact in a relatively
short amount of time,” says Dr. IacobuzioDonahue. “The invaluable support of The V
Foundation has allowed me to pursue important
questions that have the potential to improve
survival of pancreatic cancer patients, as well as
foster my own career growth in this very difficult
funding environment.”
The convergence of new technologies, clever
scientific minds, and dedicated organizations
like The V Foundation are altering the course of
cancer in ways that could only be imagined a
decade ago. The research of these V Foundation
funded scientists illustrates the progress already
made and the future potential to improve the
lives of cancer patients in ways never before
thought possible. Research findings made
possible through V Foundation support will allow
them to compete for large National Institutes of
Health grants and ensure continued progress.

GRANT SPOTLIGHT: TRANSLATIONAL
Ann Richmond, Ph.D.
Developing a ‘personalized treatment plan’
that will work for a specific patient’s tumor is
the cornerstone of Dr. Ann Richmond’s work at
the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. As such,
Dr. Richmond can evaluate the response of a
patient tumor to new drug therapies and deliver
personalized medicine.
The importance of funding cancer research is
near to Dr. Richmond’s heart. She says, “Without
the ability to discover new effective treatments
and determine the appropriate setting for
delivery of these treatments, progress in cancer
therapy will not move forward.” Dr. Richmond
indicates that strong basic, clinical and
translational research programs are an absolute
key, with development of specific therapeutic
regimes that can effectively kill tumor cells and
circumvent resistance.
“I am truly, truly thankful to The
V Foundation and their donors for
the wonderful translational grants
they have funded.”
Ann Richmond, Ph.D.
Dr. Richmond believes that the 2006
Translational grant she received from The V
Foundation has had a phenomenal influence
on her research path. “The V Foundation has
energized the translational work we’re able
to do here. It has been very, very important
for our ongoing quest to develop better
treatments for melanoma.” Furthermore,
the Foundation funding has been critical for
development of the model, implementation of
the therapeutic and genetic studies utilizing the
model, and correlating the data obtained with
patient prognosis. “The data gathered from
these studies led to our obtaining additional
funding from agencies such as the National
Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute,
Veteran’s Administration and Food and Drug
Administration. All were necessary to complete
the long term study.”
Without The V Foundation’s support, Dr.
Richmond’s research program would be much
slower, if not stagnant. New, innovative research,
which has been a result of a lot of collaboration
and a whole team of players coming together,
would not have had the opportunity to progress.
The research support has resulted in publication
of a number of key papers in outstanding
journals, as well as oral presentations at national
and international meetings. In addition, nine
junior scientists have received training and are
moving forward in their careers.

Pediatric Cancer Research Program
at Duke Children’s Hospital
“It is a true honor to be associated
with The V Foundation – the
support of our training program
is immeasurable, especially when
funding is more and more difficult
to obtain.”
Dan Wechsler, MD., Ph.D.
Since 2002, The V Foundation has supported
three Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (PHO)
Fellows at Duke Children’s Hospital. Each V
Foundation Fellowship allows a PHO trainee
to maintain a concentrated focus on research.
Specifically, Duke PHO/V Foundation fellows
have studied angiogenesis (the process by which
blood vessels grow), leukemia development, and
sarcoma formation.
both in terms of potential impact on children
and contributions to understanding how adult
cancers arise.” There have been many findings
derived from pediatric cancer research that have
had a significant impact on cancer biology in
general – for example, the concept of the tumor
suppressor gene was derived from the study of
retinoblastoma, an exclusively pediatric
eye tumor.
V Foundation funding has allowed for expansion
of the pediatric cancer research program at
Duke – two of the fellows have been supported
to work in labs focused specifically on pediatric
tumors, allowing the research programs in
these labs to take new directions. Each lab has
published a paper in the past year, and each is
using preliminary data for NIH grant applications.
The V Foundation’s support of pediatric cancer
research and training at Duke has made a
significant impact. Support of investigators is a
solid investment that will yield novel insights into
pediatric sarcomas, with the hope of developing
new therapies to combat these devastating
tumors. Furthermore, in the last year alone,
pediatric cancer researchers at Duke have
received additional grants totaling $200,000 as a
result of their V Foundation supported work, and
an NIH R01 application is currently under review.
“It is a true honor to be associated with The V
Foundation – the support of our training program
is immeasurable, especially when funding is
more and more difficult to obtain,” said Dr.
Dan Wechsler, Chief of Pediatric HematologyOncology at Duke University Medical Center. He
continues, “The V Foundation has recognized
the importance of pediatric cancer research –
Dr. Dan Wechsler takes care of children with
cancer and blood disorders. He is involved in

GRANT SPOTLIGHT: DESIGNATED
Gil Nickel Memorial
Melanoma is the most aggressive form of
skin cancer, and through the Gil Nickel Family
Endowed Fellowship in Melanoma Research,
great strides are being taken in researching
this dreadful disease. The fellowship is housed
at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer
Center, and its goal is to recruit and train new
generations of promising young melanoma
researchers. It was named for Gil Nickel, a
visionary of the Napa Valley wine industry and
proprietor of Far Niente winery, who lost his
battle to melanoma in 2003.
Dr. Richard Koya
In recent years, new treatments have been
tested and approved for melanoma based on
research conducted by The V Foundation-Gil
Nickel Family Fellows—Dr. Richard Koya, Dr.
Erika von Euw and Dr. Helena Escuin-Ordinas.
Their research has explored different aspects of
melanoma to try to find new ways to target and
disarm it.
For example, Dr. Escuin–Ordinas and Dr. Koya
are working to advance combination therapies
that pair a targeted treatment with an immune
system booster to more effectively fight
melanoma.
Dr. Koya, who is now an assistant professor of
surgical oncology, continues to research ways to
activate the immune system and create a longerlasting response to a recently approved targeted
therapy for melanoma. He still collaborates with
Dr. Antoni Ribas who has mentored each of The V
Foundation-Gil Nickel Family Fellows.
When asked about The V Foundation-Gil Nickel
Family Fellowship, Dr. Koya said “Receiving
this fellowship was a real vote of confidence
in me and my ideas. I’m proud that my work
is contributing to new treatment options for
advanced melanoma, and I’m grateful to be
continuing to progress in my research career
at UCLA.”
“The V Foundation has allowed
us to expand our research
efforts,” said Dr. Ribas.
Dr. Ribas, who leads the Jonsson Cancer
Center’s melanoma research team, added “The
V Foundation has allowed us to expand our
research efforts. We are able to recruit and retain
excellent trainees. They have generated new data
that has been published in high-ranking journals
and has added to the excitement in the field.
More importantly, their work is being translated
into new treatments for metastatic melanoma. We
are proud of the impact this research is having in
the lives of patients with melanoma.”

Charles Perou, Ph.D.
The Partners in Excellence program brought
together two universities that are typically rivals
on the basketball court – Duke University and
the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. This
$2 million V Foundation grant brought together
Charles Perou’s lab at the UNC Lineberger
Cancer Center and Joe Nevins’ lab at Duke
Comprehensive Cancer Center in honor of Jamie
Valvano Howard and Kelly Jo Dowd. Howard and
Dowd were both treated for breast cancer.
“This V Foundation grant allowed
us to pursue an avenue of research
that we otherwise would not have
pursued, and which yielded some
very promising data.”
Charles Perou, Ph.D.
The goal of this program was to combine
genomic expertise and determine what the two
cancer centers could learn from a combined
analysis of breast cancers. This grant allowed Dr.
Charles Perou the ability to pursue a direction
of research for breast cancer that the scientific
community wasn’t pursuing. Dr. Perou studied
the associations between specific signaling
pathways and specific tumor subtypes in breast
cancer. He focused primarily on the association
between the PIK3CA signaling pathway and the
luminal B breast cancer subtype. By working
with the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center,
this team is developing a clinical trial based upon
these results.
Since Dr. Perou received his Partners in
Excellence grant, he has received six awards for
his achievements. Most recently, he is working on
The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) that reported
the genetic characterization of 800 breast
tumors. Dr. Perou has contributed to more than a
dozen publications that cited The V Foundation
funding.
“This V Foundation grant allowed us to pursue
an avenue of research that we otherwise would
not have pursued, and which yielded some very
promising data. These results were also recently
validated by our TCGA study findings. We are
now trying to translate these discoveries into a
clinical trial, which is the next big step for this
translational research effort.”

GRANT SPOTLIGHT: DESIGNATED
Jill M. Siegfried, Ph.D.
Dr. Jill M. Siegfried investigates the mysterious
link between estrogens and lung cancer,
a probable factor in risk of lung cancer in
non-smoking women. Dr. Siegfried’s 2009 V
Foundation Designated Grant helped establish
new clinical trials for lung cancer patients at the
University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. The $1
million grant was instrumental in translating her
lab research into “bench-to-bedside” trials that
potentially benefit smoking and non-smoking
patients. Her studies showed that the link to
estrogen is also important in men with lung
cancer.
“I am very honored to have received this funding
at such a critical time, when it is very hard to
obtain research funds from federal grants,” said
Dr. Siegfried. “This money is allowing me to
continue moving my research forward to patients
in the clinic.” “The legacy of Jimmy Valvano
lives on in the many contributors
to The V Foundation and its grant
recipients.”
Jill M. Siegfried, Ph.D.
Dr. Siegfried is a professor of pharmacology
in the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine and co-director of the Lung and
Thoracic Malignancies Program at the University
of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI). Her
research examines the role of hormones in the
development and growth of lung cancer. She is
currently exploring if an estrogen-targeting drug
combo, often used to treat breast cancer, may
also help prevent lung cancer.
Dr. Siegfried and her UCPI colleagues received
a five-year, $12 million National Cancer Institute
Specialized Program of Research Excellence
(SPORE) grant for lung cancer research. The
grant allowed Dr. Siegfried to further study how
estrogens affect the risk of developing lung
cancer in men and women. “I was able to renew
a major grant from the National Cancer Institute
in part because The V Foundation grant allowed
us to complete a clinical trial.”
Dr. Siegfried lends her scientific expertise to the
UCPI and the National Lung Cancer Partnership
scientific advisory board. She received the
15th Annual Alton Ochsner Foundation Award
Relating Smoking and Health, recognizing her
contribution to understanding the enhanced
susceptibility of women to lung cancer.
“Although the research path can often be
slower than we would wish,” says Dr. Siegfried,
“foundations like The V Foundation help us
maintain our enthusiasm and commitment to
helping patients achieve better outcomes. The
legacy of Jimmy Valvano lives on in the many
contributors to The V Foundation and its grant
recipients.” Moving research forward to patients
27
Nick Valvano: President Emeritus
Valvano is proud of The V Foundation for staying focused
on Jim’s mission: finding an end to cancer. Through funding
critical cancer research, Valvano says, “We have an impact
on careers and research projects.” There’s a sense of
accomplishment in that The V Foundation has awarded
more than $100 million for cancer research.
“Nick’s accomplishments as CEO the past 13 years have
been numerous and significant,“ said Bob Lloyd, Chairman
of the Board of The V Foundation. “Under his leadership,
The V Foundation annual research grants grew from under
$2 million to nearly $15 million. In addition, he brought
structure and process to the Foundation during this
growth period. By working with fellow board members,
Dr. Bob Bast and Dr. Joe Moore, Nick built an incredible
Scientific Advisory Board. Jim would be very proud of his
“big brother.”
Nick Valvano, retired CEO and President Emeritus, has
served on The V Foundation Board of Directors since
its inception and has also played a leadership role on its
staff since 1999. His reflections of this time can best be
summarized through a gamut of emotions… Valvano is
understandably sad when his role at the Foundation forces
him daily to confront the fact that Jim, his beloved brother,
is no longer here, having died from cancer in 1993. He is
conflicted by the fact that many of the friendships that
have developed through The V Foundation have only come
about because Jim passed away. But mostly, he is grateful.
Grateful to the people who have helped The V Foundation
get started and given it the opportunity to continue to
grow and make a more significant impact in the fight
against cancer. And grateful to ESPN and its employees
who have generously given their time and talent year after
year to help the Foundation thrive.
28
In the beginning, the Foundation was driven by an
outpouring of emotion at Jim’s death: a vibrant brother,
father, husband, coach and friend had lost his battle with
cancer. However, grief and loss soon became commitment
and determination. Those leading the Foundation
immediately became aware that its success in the fight
against cancer, now so personal to them, depended on
running the organization with sound business practices.
“You need to be a good custodian of people’s money. You
need to make sure it is used for the purpose it was given.
We owe our donors that level of transparency.”
Regardless of socio-economic position, geography, race or
age, The V Foundation unites people toward one common
goal: ending cancer. Valvano believes the Foundation is
special for one notable reason… “people!”
Valvano says, “The people who have chosen to support our
mission—they have given their time, their money and their
friendship. They have helped keep the fight against cancer
personal. That’s what makes us strong!”
“
our present:
Where We are
cancer can take away all my physical abilities. it cannot touch
my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my
soul. and those three things are going to carry on forever.

Susan Braun: Path to the v foundation
Inspired by her friend’s courage and devastating loss, Braun
has spent her career doing what she can to eradicate cancer
– to assure the best of treatment for those diagnosed today
and to create a world without cancer for future generations.
She has led the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation,
the ASCO Cancer Foundation, Commonweal, the Cure Media
Group; she has also served on committees and Boards at
the National Cancer Institute, Smith Center for Healing and
the Arts, the California Breast Cancer Research Program, the
World Society for Breast Health, and others. And now The V
Foundation for Cancer Research is proud to welcome her as
its CEO.
Like most people in the world today, Susan Braun, CEO
of The V Foundation, has experienced cancer on a very
personal level. When they were both new mothers, her
college roommate, Marilyn, was diagnosed with breast
cancer. She was young and healthy. She worked as a
nutritionist at an academic medical center and her husband
was a physician. The odds were in her favor. Yet, despite
her youth and health and aggressive treatment, Marilyn lost
her battle with cancer.
“The V Foundation is uniquely positioned
as an agent of change.”
54
Braun knows that each person has his or her own stories
of loss and of hope, of struggle and of courage. She says,
“The V Foundation is a leader in the war against cancer by
providing high-impact funding in the hands of the nation’s
most promising physicians and scientists. And it is strategic
and nimble with its funding mechanisms. Funding the right
research will lead to longer lives, better treatments, earlier
diagnoses, and eventually to preventing cancer.”
Braun holds strong beliefs regarding the fight against
cancer. She believes that cancer is a formidable opponent
and that cancer research is crucial and complex. She knows
that independence and flexibility are critical to strategic
investments in cancer research. She is confident that
strategic funding will fuel progress and says that “The V
Foundation is uniquely positioned as an agent of change.”
With Susan Braun at the helm, The V Foundation is poised
to make an impact – to help recreate a world without cancer.
“
our future:
Where We ARE headed
we need your help. i need your help. we need money for
research. it may not save my life. it may save my children’s lives.
it may save someone you love.

Investing in the Future:
North Carolina State University
Jimmy V Cancer Therapeutics
Training Program
The training program was made possible though
a $1 million initial grant from The V Foundation.
The partnership between The V Foundation and
NCSU was formed in response to decreasing
numbers of science students entering the
research field. Since its inception, The V
Foundation has valued supporting young
scientists, as Jim Valvano himself saw how
difficult it was for researchers to find funding
and launch their careers.
The program identifies young scientists through
a highly competitive application process. The
program works with undergraduate, graduate
and high school students and gives them the
opportunity to become Jimmy V Scholars. From
there, the students are able to gain knowledge
and research experience in four laboratories at
NCSU.
Dr, John Cavanagh
In 2008 The V Foundation for Cancer Research
created a partnership with North Carolina State
University to develop the NCSU Jimmy V Cancer
Therapeutics Training Program. The program
encourages young students to study and pursue
careers in cancer research.
Dr. John Cavanagh, who directs the Department
of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry, said
there have been about 50 talented students
participate in the training program. “The
program allowed each of them to locate their
niche.”
“Without the program, we would have lost many
of these students to other careers,” Cavanagh
said. “That would have been horrible to lose
such talent. Some of the research they’ve been
involved in shows tremendous potential.”
The program allows young scientists to experience several
different aspects of research with the hopes of helping them
find their niche.
56
Sean Stowe
Sean Stowe was one of the first
students to participate in the
Cancer Therapeutics Training
Program and he’s now finishing
his Ph.D. in Functional Genomics.
He said the program inspired
him to pursue a career in cancer
therapeutics.
Stowe was inspired by watching the effects that
rigorous chemotherapy had on family members.
“The more I learned about the disease and its
treatment, the more I felt that our work had
the ability to improve the quality of a patient’s
life in addition to increase the effectiveness of
their treatments,” Stowe said. “By the time I had
been in the program for a couple of years, I was
committed to pursuing a career that would allow
me to continue improving the lives of cancer
patients.”
Student researchers like Sean Stowe have been
able to develop a therapeutic technique by
identifying mechanisms that convert normal cells
into tumor cells. Stowe said the program allows
young scientists to experience several different
aspects of research with the hopes of helping
them find their specialty.
“The Jimmy V Cancer Therapeutics Training
Program at NC State has given the university an
opportunity to recruit promising young minds
to the many different facets of cancer research
that are found on campus. It allows them to
do so while memorializing one of their greatest
heroes,” Stowe said.
With the help of additional funding, the program
will expand and include other cancer research
laboratories at NCSU.

Honors 9/11
First Responders
Who doesn’t remember where they were on
September 11, 2001? Think of the first responders
- the brave men and women who run toward
danger when the rest of us are running away
from it. In New York City, there are more than
50,000 of these heroes. Yet though the attacks
on the Twin Towers occurred more than 11 years
ago, these individuals are still fighting. They
are 19% more likely to get cancer than other
members of the New York Fire Department or
the general population who were not exposed.
Since 9/11, many first responders who served
that day have been diagnosed with rare cancers.
Those being diagnosed generally do not have
a family history of cancer or any prior health
issues. A toxic mix of glass, asbestos, cement,
lead and other particles was released from The
Twin Towers’ collapse. Many believe that skin and
lung exposure to this toxic dust combination has
contributed to a significant increase of cancer
rates among Twin Towers’ first responders.
The V Foundation’s Designated grant program
was the perfect fit to address this issue. To
commemorate sacrifices 9/11 first responders
made that day, The V Foundation is proud to
award a unique grant to support research on
the cancers common to the 9/11 Twin Towers
first responders.
Although the Designated grant program usually
funds projects in communities or regions local
to the fund-raising area, V Foundation signature
events across the country united to fundraise
for this important purpose. In 2012, the V
Foundation Wine Celebration, Jimmy V Celebrity
Golf Classic and Jimmy V Classic Dinner held
special fundraising auctions to raise money for
a grant to study the predictors of cancers in the
group of firefighters exposed during 9/11. These
three events successfully raised $1 million for
this important grant.
Chief Medical Officer for the New York City Fire
Department, Dr. David Prezant, is spearheading
current research efforts. Dr. Prezant believes
that earlier cancer diagnosis saves lives. “The V
Foundation’s million dollar grant will allow us to
develop tools for early diagnosis of hematologic
cancers, specifically leukemia and multiple
myeloma in firefighters,” said Dr. Prezant. He
added, “Funding from The V Foundation has
helped bring national recognition and respect
from within the scientific community to the fire
department’s cause.”
The increased rate of cancer has had a traumatic
effect on the city’s fire houses, because these
men and women see that friends and family
members who served on 9/11 are still sacrificing
– even more than eleven years after the event.
Yet there is hope, and The V Foundation’s grant
is poised to make a tremendous impact. Chief
Robert Sweeney with the FDNY believes, “If [this
grant] would prevent one fatality from cancer
or save one life from cancer, it’ll be well-served
going forward.”

A World Without Cancer…
Those who knew Jim best often say if he were here today,
he might ask “What’s taking so long?” But the truth is, we
know he’d be proud of the accomplishments his Foundation
has achieved in the fight against cancer. We still live in a
world where most lives are touched in some way by this
dreaded disease — but just like Jim, we’re not giving up.
In his now famous ESPY speech, Jim said, “If you laugh,
you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a
day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have
something special.” In many ways, the Foundation that
bears Jim’s name brings these words to life.
Just spend one day at The V Foundation office in Cary, N.C.,
and you’ll see that we LAUGH. The many volunteers that
celebrate Jim’s memory and the people who work tirelessly
to raise money and spend it wisely on cancer research
are full of joy. Jim knew as well as anyone how important
laughter is. It’s important to hang on to the things in life
that make you smile.
The people implementing the mission of The V Foundation
— the scientists, physicians and researchers — THINK.
Their bright minds and innovative spirits are what will
one day find the answers that will put an end to cancer.
58
Your donations for 20 years have helped these talented
individuals become leaders in their field creating the
knowledge base that fuels progress.
Tears are inevitable as we pursue our mission. Whether
tears of sadness or tears of joy, all of us whose lives have
been touched by cancer CRY. It will never be easy to watch
someone you love go through the diagnosis and treatment
of cancer. But the emotions behind those tears are often
the biggest motivation to fight against a disease that
affects so many.
Laughter, thought and tears are ubiquitous in the fight
against cancer, as they are in life. Jim fought his battle
against cancer in a way that demonstrated this. While Jim
ultimately lost his fight, his Foundation has given millions
of others the chance to win theirs.
There is still work to be done. Cancer has not been
eradicated, but it has been weakened. We can’t give up at
a time when we are so close to reaching our goal.
We look forward to taking the journey into a world
without cancer with you.
