For the Holidays, shop smart, shop local
by Jeremy Jones
I
n the past year or so, I have had
the honor of covering more
than 40 shops, businesses and
enterprises for our Shop Local column, and in the process I’ve had
the pleasure of meeting consummately accomplished Chestnut
Hill retailers, business owners and
artists who have a passion for their
livelihoods and a commitment to
excellence.
Many of my columns finish with
a list of “my picks” – favorite selections of shop offerings I hope will
entice you to go take a look. So, for
this Holidays-on-The-Hill special
section, I immersed myself in the
joy, anticipation and wonder of
Hanukkah and Christmas by visiting many shops that have not yet
appeared in the column. They will
wow shoppers and window shoppers alike. Traditional, wonky, surprising and awesome finds await
you on the Avenue. On Christmas
morning, my brother always

YUMMY TREATS

AND CHRISTMAS.
For Hanukkah, Night Kitchen’s
famous thick-cut vanilla shortbread cookies draped in fondant,
and iced with royal icing are created in the shapes of a dreidel, a Jewish Star and Menorah.
For Christmas: The Kitchen’s
always-in-demand Yule Log consists of light chocolate sponge cake
filled with whipped cream, iced
with dark chocolate icing, and decorated with fondant snowmen,
candy canes, Christmas Trees and

Another Christmas favorite is
the Kitchen’s traditional Fruit

Cognac, $16.
“Our most decadent Christmas

our chocolate mousse in chocolate
cake then a kiss of dark chocolate

ganache. It is beautifully decorated
with a buttercream Christmas
wreath, holly berries and silver
balls.” Large - $45, small - $28.

Singers & musicians join for Caroling at the Crèche
by Ruth R. Russell
C
hestnut Hill’s popular Caroling at the Crèche will return
this year with singing by
young and old and a newly energized
group of musicians.
“We have always had such a good
time that we decided to have a
reunion and a rehearsal BEFORE the
event,” reported Janine Dwyer, conductor for many years.
Area residents of all ages will be
joined again by this talented contingent of musicians. The date is
December 21, and the location is
again the Top of the Hill in front of
Santander Bank, starting at 7:30
p.m.
An enthusiastic Dwyer describes
the musicians as “Mickey Leone, a
multi-talented guy who plays guitar
and owns the Music School that
meets at St. Paul’s Church; Pat Kaufman, a guitar player for many years at
St. Genevieve’s Church; and his son,
Dan Kaufman, also on guitar.
“Then there is Kitty Kelly, who
plays the Irish fiddle; her husband,
Mike Albrecht, who usually plays
the boron; Lizzie Edson, a player of
bells, and Steve Hastie, on guitar.
“And I don’t want to forget our
talented jazz pianist, Joseph Block.
He is our youngest performer and last
year he played the ‘Peanuts’ theme,”
said Dwyer.
Although some schools will be in
session, she hopes that “because of
the early time for this event young
parents will not hesitate to bring
their children.” Song sheets are provided and there will be mix of kids’
songs.
This is the third year that Santander has hosted the event. ”Gail
from the bank is so enthusiastic,”
said Dwyer. “She is really a loyal supporter.”
Committee members are loyal too,
returning year after year. Among
them are Paul and Becky Roller, Jay
Susanin, of Custom Frames; Ginger
Williams, from the former Cafette,
and artist Hugh McNamara.
The backdrop for the caroling, the
nativity scene, will be put in place on
Monday, December 7. The figures
have been beautifully painted by
McNamara and include Mary,
Joseph, the infant Jesus, three Wise
Men two shepherds and some animals.
The gala reunion-rehearsal of the
musicians will take place at the site
the next day.
After the singing on the 21st, the
Friends of Chestnut Hill Library will
welcome the chilly carolers with hot
beverages and cookies from local
bakeries, according to Eleanor Murdoch, hospitality chairman of the
Friends.
Antoinette DuBiel, a dedicated
helper for many years, calls Caroling
at the Crèche “a great continuing
tradition for this community.” She
and Dwyer took over leadership of
Caroling after Rita Coyne (a Hill
merchant) stepped down.
From the beginning this volunteer
organization has stood on its own,
and is not connected to the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
The tradition was begun by a few
individuals after Mrs. Morgan (Peggy) Hebard suggested at a community meeting in 1952 that something
should be done to counteract what
she felt was the commercialization of
the holiday.
Her concern struck a responsive
chord, and since then the Friends of
want
more news?
www.chestnuthilllocal.com
the Crèche have set up a nativity
scene with lights and greens at the
Top of the Hill each December.
Mrs. Hebard donated the original
figures, and a manger framework was
constructed. Nearby was placed a
sign with a message written by the
late Mary Wickham Bond, a Chestnut Hill resident and author, saying:
“With fervent prayers for Peace on
Earth, the Community of Chestnut
Hill acclaims the Holy Birth of the
Prince of Peace at Christmas Time.”
The first location for the crèche
was in front of the Hill library, which
had a disadvantage. Mrs. Hebard or a
member of the committee had to get
a key and enter the library after hours
to turn lights off and on.
The following year, the nativity
scene was moved to Pennsylvania
Railroad Station (as it was then
called) and later to the corner of
Bethlehem Pike and Germantown
Avenue.
Subsequently it was caught in
stormy winds that swept through the
little tableau and smashed three figures. So the crèche was moved to a
more sheltered spot, in front of Intercounty Savings Bank, now Santander Bank, where it has remained.
For more information about Caroling at the Crèche, call Janine
Dwyer at 215-247-2909.
The Creche in Chestnut Hill is a traditional caroling location every year.

hestnut Hill — with lights,
music and beautifully decorated shops — is a wonderful place to be at the holiday
season.
In fact, festivities have already
begun, according to Peggy Miller,
deputy director of the Chestnut
Hill Business Association.
“Santa arrived in an antique fire
engine last Saturday at Woodmere
Art Museum for the annual lighting of the Circle of Trees. Everyone was welcome at this
celebration, and on this day all the
lights on Germantown Avenue
were turned on,” she reported.

Look for Santa’s elves, with their

However, as a television colleague of mine says, “that’s not all!”
Chestnut Hill will have many
exciting things to do during the
holiday season.

“Look for special activities such
as chocolate tasting at the Pennsylvania General Store. Elves will be
on the Avenue handing out goodie
bags during the day, and this will be
the start of music on the Avenue
for the holiday season,” said Miller.
“We hope families that are at
home will come to Chestnut Hill
to shop and enjoy the day. As a
special attraction we will have the

added.
Stag and Doe Wednesdays
Shopping continues to be special
in Chestnut Hill with stores open
later on the popular Stag & Doe
Nights on Wednesday evenings.
“This year there will be four of
them,” Miller pointed out,
“December 2, 9, 16 and 23.” There
will be carolers on the Avenue, and
Santa will appear too.

Annual Holiday Craft Show returns to Water Tower
by Ruth R. Russell
W
ater Tower Recreation
Center, in the heart of
Chestnut Hill, will again
be hosting the annual Holiday Craft
Show on Saturday and Sunday,
December 12 and 13.
“As the cold and winter snow
begins to form its icy figures on our
window panes, our minds fill with the
warmth of the holiday spirit. A great
way to ignite that spirit is to come for
a fun filled time at the Show,” says
Kathy Lombardo, its chairman.
“This lively, two-day event is 30
years old, and will have many returning artists and some new ones as well.
These artists have created one of a
kind items for you to peruse,” she
reported.
“This year we will feature pottery,
baby clothes, clothes for American
Girl dolls, lamps, scarves, hats, candles, soaps and fabulous jewelry. Our
prices are reasonable, and our quality
is outstanding,” she added.
The show was started in a private
home, then moved to a church, then
to the Water Tower, where it has
been for many years. Lombardo
praised the staff at the recreation center, calling them “so helpful and supportive.”
Hours for the Craft Show are 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December
12, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday,
December 13. Lunch will be available both days. Admission is free.
Water Tower Recreation Center is
located on Hartwell Lane, two blocks
east of 8200 Germantown Ave. Proceeds from the Craft Show go
towards the Center.

Jay Goldstein, president of the
southern region of Commercial
Banking at Univest Bank and Trust
Co., is pleased to be sponsoring such
a worthwhile initiative.
“There is no better way to support
our children than to encourage them
to be avid, accomplished readers;
and, as we all know, reading is a key
to success in pursuing a lifetime of
learning.”
Mastery Charter Schools’ CEO
Scott Gordon is thrilled that Mastery’s elementary students will benefit from this year’s drive, saying “We
believe that developing a love of
reading at a young age is vitally
important as children build skills
that will help them in school and
beyond. Several of our schools were
chronically underperforming before
becoming a part of the Mastery network and now we’re pleased to see
students’ reading scores in those
schools consistently improve. Partnerships like this truly benefit the
neighborhoods we serve and we’re
grateful for the ongoing support we
receive from Valley Green Bank.”
Managing Director of Mt Airy
USA, Abby Thaker is grateful for
Univest’s and Valley Green Bank’s
support for Mt. Airy schools and the
Mt. Airy Reads initiative. “We’re
looking forward to providing additional books for school and classroom libraries thanks to this book
drive.”
“All of us at Wissahickon Charter
School are incredibly grateful for the
book donations. The books go
directly into classroom libraries so
students can take them home and
practice reading books that are just
right for them. The time for reading
at home is invaluable to our work of
growing strong readers.” said Kristi
Littell, CEO.
