Biological
filtration is the process
by which waste is broken
down from toxic ammonia
to less toxic nitrates by
beneficial bacteria that
inhabit the surfaces in an
aquarium. The optimum
conditions for bacteria to
prosper and colonize in an
enclosed environment are a
constant supply of oxygen
and media with large
amounts of surface area.
The under gravel filter
utilizes the gravel bed as a
source of surface area and
provides large amounts of
oxygen by
recirculating the
water down through the
gravel and up the uplift
tubes, creating a constant
flow through the media.
Biological filtration may also
be accomplished with Lee’s®
Bio-Pin Balls (on page 18)
or Sponge Filters (page 14).

Skimmers help prevent toxic tank syndrome by removing proteins and other
