Public inquiries can be made to the President through the Contact page on the website: www.swcartists.ca. I look at the art of community as being a part of something much larger than myself. In this case, it is our Society of Western Canadian Artists. As I look back on the past two years, I am filled with many different emotions. I am grateful and honoured to have had the opportunity to serve as your President. Thank you for your faith in me. I could not have fulfilled this position without all the positive support and encouragement I received from every one of you. I felt the strength of our community and membership as you walked beside me in this amazing journey. Together we have made significant steps in realizing our vision in SWCA. I have enjoyed the fellowship of working together to accomplish this. My goal as your President was to increase the membership. I am a real “people person” and I enjoyed the challenge of finding new ways to attract artists into our community of SWCA. Sharing my enthusiasm and experience as a member to prospective artists was exciting for me and my assistant (my 6 year old grandson). My belief in our Society resonated with the artists I met and it was a very positive experience. I kept in touch with prospective members through monthly invites welcoming them to our Community. It was a win/win for everyone – including my assistant. Another exciting event for me was including SWCA members in the incredible Mural Mosaic for Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations next year. Forty two artists and friends participated in painting 4 x 4” tiles to be incorporated in this Canada-wide mural. This was such a fun night and awesome exposure to be part of our Canadian history celebration. Members thoroughly enjoyed themselves and expressed an interest in more of these type of events. Yes, there were some challenges and a learning curve which comes 11116 - 120 Street NW Edmonton AB T5G 2X8 www.deltaart.ca Phone: 780-455-7983 Toll Free: 1-888-455-1606 Email: [email protected] ARTIST PAINT - BRUSHES - SKETCH PADS - PASTELS - EASELS - CANVAS - PAPER PRINT MAKING - CHARCOAL - PENS - PENCILS - MARKERS - MAT BOARD WATERCOLOUR PAPER - PROJECTORS - TRIMMERS AND MUCH, MUCH MORE STUDENT AND SENIOR DISCOUNTS Cover printed courtesy of: Elite Lithographers Co. I gained respect for myself in facing the challenges and I am very proud of my courage to care enough. As we move forward into a new chapter in the Society it is my hope that we can continue to honour our vision and mission of “Artists helping Artists”. This “hope will attract [future] chances.” (Toba Beta) “Hope is not a prediction of the future; but it is a declaration of what is possible.” (Yogi Berra) Where there is no vision, there is no hope. We have the vision, but we need the help of volunteers to support this vision. It is possible to achieve this vision together and it is my hope that the desire to make this possible encourages members to step forward and take leadership, particularly in the very important Executive roles. I took this step two years ago and have had a wonderful adventure which I would never have had experienced otherwise. I immersed myself in our Society’s community and the art community and reaped the rewards from this involvement in both. It has been a win/win for me. The success of our Society’s Community depends on our membership being involved. I would be extremely disappointed and sad not to have this community of Society of Western Canadian Artists to belong to. My years as your President have been very rewarding. I thank you for the opportunity of a lifetime. Her paintings are motivated with movement, light, colour, and the magic in the process of creativity. She strives to capture emotion, mood, and atmosphere and to aim to portray this to the viewer through the process of brush stroke, technique, composition, colour, and perspective. Esther's medium of choice is acrylics, oil, and mixed media. An assortment of coffee, tea, and maybe a delightful lunch or snack make the experience while enjoying Esther's art even more pleasurable. PROGRAMS Cathy McMillan studied Art & Design at Grant MacEwan University, travelled the world doing caricatures (and filling her Art Journals) for several years until she and her husband settled back in Edmonton. In between trips she studied fine art and painting with American artist Eileen Racher Sutton. Cathy turned her art continued February program review Karen Bishop was invited to do a critique for any member who wanted to bring in a painting that they were having problems with and wanted Karen’s advice. Karen graduated from the U of A extension with a Fine Arts degree along with experience in owning a local art gallery. Karen gave a lot of good tips to make for more successful paintings. She touched on the use of colour, layout, technique and even framing choices. We (the Program Committee members) didn’t manage to get the camera and projector working for this program but we hope that members were still able to see the paintings well and view the general colour use, visual flow and technique of each painting that was displayed for critique. Thanks to all who attended. We hope you got some good tips to help with your own paintings and left inspired!. Lynn Romaine, Programs March 2016 program Art Journalling with Cathy McMillan This month’s cover artist Tammy Taylor Tammy Taylor is a self-taught artist with a passion for wildlife. Inspired by all God's creations, she strives to achieve life like images of her subjects in their natural environment. For over twenty years she has been creating beautiful pieces in oils and pencil. Her work mainly features wildlife, but true to her roots also livestock, agricultural scenes, and children at play readily find themselves her subjects. Along with her husband and four children, Tammy resides on a farm near Rich Valley, not far from where she was born and raised. Tammy belongs to Night of Artists, Federation of Canadian Artists, Society of Western Canadian Artists, and often participates with Mural Mosaics. Her career as an artist has held many honours and awards, and her paintings can be found in private collections in Canada and abroad. This year Tammy is also a National Portfolio Artist for Ducks Unlimited. Along with painting, she also teaches many workshops and classes for various art groups. Dog Gone Tired was inspired by the artist's own dog, an Australian Shepherd named Teddy. He always sleeps this way and Tammy was compelled to portray that cute and innocent side of him. As always, she searches for subjects that will evoke an emotional response in her viewers. Cathy McMillan has been writing, drawing and painting in her journals since 1981. At 17 years old she decided that THAT was the day she’d begin journalling for the rest of her life. Come listen to Cathy’s artistic journey through Art Journalling. To quote Cathy: “Over the past 16 years I have filled more than eighty books with my creative deluge. In looking back over the past 30 years as a professional artist, I can honestly say that for me, art journaling has allowed me to rediscover the kind of creative freedom we all feel as a child and has led me to understand and trust my authentic creative voice.” Now if that’s not a powerful statement, I don’t know what is! Come be inspired, learn tips and techniques. We hope you will leave π Dog Gone Tired / 12” X 16” / Oil March 2016 / 5 receive a free 15 minute session. Creativity Coaching is both motivating and fun! Creative people are notoriously their own worst enemies and often find themselves discouraged by self sabotaging negative self talk. Creativity Coaching is a way to explore your thoughts and feelings around creativity and to learn to block those negative patterns that are holding you back. For more information on Creativity Coaching, see my website at www.CoachingTheCreative.ca. Contact me at [email protected] and 6 / March 2016 Hello to our artist friends.
