ow do you feel about
yourself and your artistic
journey? Is painting a hobby
or just an interest? Or is it a passion
where you believe you can make
your art a reality?
“In order to be good at something
you need to believe in what you are
doing.” (Billy Crystal)
To succeed you have to believe in
something with such a passion that it
becomes a reality.
I have always had this subconscious
desire to create. I did not know at the
time that this desire would manifest
itself in painting. I was thrilled when I
discovered a passion for painting but
I needed to start at the beginning ...
which was learning how to draw.
I was nervous at my first drawing
class at university as I was way out of
my comfort zone – but I believed that
the spark was there and I was going
to ignite it. The first thing I learned
was blind contour and I was very
excited when the instructor came by
and told me that my drawing was
great. My artistic journey had begun
and my belief at that time was that I
had found my niche in life.
Now I had to continue making it
happen. I spent many years honing
my skills as a watercolour artist in
workshops too numerous to mention.
Painting classes became my favorite
day of the week and I never missed a
class. I became obsessed with this
passion becoming a reality. The more
I learned the more I wanted to learn.
When I retired and could paint on a
daily basis, I was excited to see a real
difference in my progress. As I
continued on this journey, I began to
really believe in myself. This belief
gave me the confidence I needed in
order to grow further.
“Whatever the conscious mind thinks
and believes the subconscious
identically creates.” (Bryan Adams)
“Our belief systems are the glasses
through which we each view the
world and anticipate what is likely to

unfold. Our behavior is always loyal
with our beliefs.”(Margo Adair)
As a positive person I have always
believed in the possibilities in life and
in order to succeed, we must believe
that we can. Tap into that power
within each of us and use it to the
best of your ability. As we develop
our belief system, we also develop
our values and allow ourselves to
really become our authentic selves.
I have always believed in our Society
of Western Canadian Artists. The
Society has been a very large part of
my artistic journey and my
involvement has rewarded me time
and time again.
I would not be where I am today
without SWCA. I would not have the
caring support and encouragement
of so many fellow artists on this same
artistic journey.
“One person with a belief is equal to
a force of ninety-nine who have only
interests.” (John Stuart Mills)
I know we all believe in the Society,
so let’s show our support and
appreciation by stepping up and
becoming involved in making a
difference.
“The ability to believe is an
outstanding quality, and art and only
art adequately translates it into
reality.” (Gerald Richter)
“I don’t believe in art. I believe in
artists.” (Marcel Duchamp)
I believe in all of you and I believe in
SWCA. Together we can continue to
endorse our belief and values in
“artists helping artists”.

Misericordia Hospital Christmas
Show with $100 and Under “Gift
Grill” was another success.
Results aren't finalized but at take

that they were carrying less
home than what they brought in
with them. Take down was fast
and efficient. Thank you to all the

Misericordia Abstract Show
Call for Entries
A call for entries for the Misericordia
Abstract Show is on page 4. This is a
great opportunity to explore
something different. Below are some
online quotes that helps define what
we are looking for.
Wikipedia: Abstract art uses a
visual language of shape, form,
color and line to create a
composition which may exist with
a degree of independence from
visual references in the world.
www.art-is-fun.com: Abstract art
has the ability to express what
other visual art styles cannot. It
can address concepts that are
intangible and theoretical, existing
in the realms of mind and spirit,
rather than in outer reality.
Abstract art utilizes pure color,
shape, and form to express its
meaning, without getting bogged
down in the storylines carried by
objects and scenery. As such, [it]
can touch the emotions in a fresh,
raw and powerfully direct way.

PROGRAMS
January program review
Michelle Schultz, Director of dc3 Art
Projects spoke about how to sell and
promote art online as well as how to
develop an artist website. Having a
digital presence is becoming
increasingly necessary. Websites,
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and
regular email art updates from a
“mailing list” are all good ideas. They
can reach a much bigger community.
Your goal should be to engage your
existing audience as well as expand
your audience.
Steps for getting a website include
getting a domain name (www) and
hosting for your site, and then
building the site.
Michelle suggested obtaining your
web name and hosting through
“GoDaddy”. Build the site using
“Wordpress” – it’s user friendly and
stable and it comes with templates.
Michelle uses the Wordpress template
“Responsive Bricks”and finds it easy
and responsive.
Other website building sites to
consider are “Made With Color” or
“Other People’s Pixels”. “Artsy” is an
online gallery that you may want to
check out as well.
Your website should show the
professionalism of your artistic
practice. Keep it clean, complete and
current. Have your art as the focus.
Have your homepage easy to
navigate with minimal distractions.
Not computer savvy? Hire a graphics
student who can do it for you at a
reasonable price. Or ask a computersavvy friend or relative to help you.
There are 1 billion monthly users of
Facebook. Create an Artist’s page,
which is different than a regular page.
But you will find it quite easily when
signing up for Facebook. Use that
artist’s page to show your work. Give
a little bit of a personal touch. In
other words, there is a benefit to
letting people in on what kind of
person you are. Some people like to
feel they kind of know the artist when
buying a piece of art.
With Twitter, there are 320 million
monthly users. A good place to show
your art as well but the average time
span on Twitter is about 20 minutes.
In other words, if someone is
following a lot of people on Twitter,
they may get several tweets ahead of
yours and may not get to your tweet
before they go on to something else.
Regular posts are a good idea.
There are approximately 300 million
Instagram users. This is image based
program and Michelle said that she
has had a lot of people inquire about
art pieces from Instagram.

Critique with guest critic
Karen Bishop
Karen is a Signature member of
SWCA, holds a Visual Arts Certificate
from the University of Alberta
Extension, ran the Daffodil Gallery in
Edmonton until its very recent
closure, and is best known for her
watercolour landscapes (although
she also paints in acrylics), You can
see her work and read more about
her accomplishments at
www.karenbishop.ca.
For the program you may bring
up to two paintings for Karen to
critique – the second painting will
only be reviewed if time allows.
Art submitted can be finished
work, or in progress. It does not
need to be framed or matted.
Open to all membership levels.
Elaine Hughes, Programs
This month’s cover artist
Laurena Bierns
Laurena Beirnes tried various
crafts and art forms but knew she
had found her niche when she
tried painting. For many years,
Laurena did decorative acrylic tole
painting and watercolours but the
last few years she has been
working with oil paints. Since
retirement she is able to spend
more time painting.
Laurena has taken workshops with
various artists such as Louise
Jackson, Guy Coombes, Derek
Wicks, Grant Fuller and Liz Wiltzen.
She has also attended the Jasper
Watercolour Retreat many times.
She likes to paint water and so
mainly paints landscapes and loves
to do plein air painting.
The more you put into any of these
online promotional tools, the more
you will get out of it.
If you feel intimidated by all of this,
just pick one of these options to look
into. Give it a shot, what do you have
to lose?

PEOPLE’S
CHOICE
Awards
FEBRUARY 8, 2016
CALL FOR
ENTRIES
A Peoples’ Choice competition
will take place on FEBRUARY 8
to select artwork for Artscape
newsletter covers for the next
several months.
Members are reminded and
encouraged to participate –
share your art with the rest
of us – you could be our
next cover artist!
The competition is open to all
current Exhibiting, Associate
and Signature status members.
Your 2015-16 membership must
be paid and up to date.
If your artwork has been
featured on the cover of
Artscape between March 2014
and February 2016, you are not
eligible to compete.
Artwork submitted should be
recent work (last 12 months).
Only one entry per member.
It is helpful to have some
form of “hardware” on the
back of the artwork so that
S hooks can be used to hang
the art for better viewing.
We prefer to hang the
artwork from the rail instead
of setting it on the floor or
on a chair.
