T
o the membership of SWCA:
I thank you for electing me as
your new President.
I was introduced to SWCA during the
Whyte Avenue Art Walk a few years
ago. I did not join right away but I
appreciated knowing that there was
a group out there sharing similar
experiences to my own and probably
asking the same questions.
As an artist spending many hours in
solitude, the realization came to me
that independence can only get you
so far; I needed to seek out other
artists. Because of that moment on
Whyte Avenue, I knew where to
turn: SWCA.
I truly believe that a strong, highly
organized group of artists working
together can benefit all artists while
at the same time enriching our
community. The journey I am about
to take as your President will be a
rewarding volunteer experience.
My background in social services
including volunteer co-ordination
has provided me with a strong
foundation for leadership. I believe
through engagement and
collaboration the Society is able to
continue to unite, educate and
recognize artists. I look forward to
working with all the members on
our continued efforts to make
SWCA great.

March program review
The March program was an
inspirational demonstration of a
variety of techniques for creating art
journals. Our guest, Cathy McMillan,
has been writing, drawing and
painting in her journals since 1981,
filling more than eighty books with
what she calls a “creative deluge.” For
Cathy, journaling has allowed her to
rediscover the kind of creative
freedom we all feel as a children. Her
demo provided us with not only a
variety of tips and techniques for
altering journal pages and adding a
variety of media to a blank page or
canvas, but also showed how this can
be a springboard for creating
wonderful backgrounds, images and
starting points for more complex
works. She also brought with her
many finished paintings, completed
journals, and stories of her creative
journeys, which combined to provide
a warm and inviting presentation and
a veritable fountain of ideas for us all.

EXHIBITIONS
Gracious Goods Café
7601 - 115 Street, Edmonton
We are delighted to have Susan
Scott as the feature artist at
Gracious Goods for the months of
May and June. Sue is a very
talented abstract artist. She uses
her intuition and the strong
connection she has to her sense of
self, spirit and soul to produce
from within. The feelings are so
powerful she doesn’t need
inspiration from photos to create
paintings that evoke so much
emotion for others. It really is
worth it to take the time and enjoy
a cup of coffee or a wonderful
lunch while seeing what kind of
emotions Sue’s art may stir in you.

Creativity Coach
Creativity Coaching by Marjorie
Thomson: If you are feeling stalled
with your artwork or would like to
move to the next level, you may find
Creativity Coaching a real help.
Creative people are notoriously their
own worst enemies and often find
themselves discouraged by self
sabotaging negative self talk.
Creativity Coaching is a way to
explore your thoughts and feelings
around creativity and to learn to
block those negative patterns that
are holding you back. For more

Judy Rikley
I grew up in small town Ontario in
an atmosphere of creative
practicality. We were always busy
with a purpose. For my second
twenty years ‘in the big city’, I led a
fast-paced life as an emergency
room nurse. During the next 20
years, I honed my communication
and creative skills on the industry
side of healthcare, developing
proposals, presentations and
teaching tools.
When I retired, I had to decide what
I now wanted to accomplish with my
new way of life. I enrolled in the
University of Alberta Faculty of
Extension program in Visual Arts. I
always envied those who could draw
well and hoped it was a skill that I
could learn.
Once I got started, I found it a very
calming activity that gave me great
satisfaction. Going with the flow of
the water and happy accidents are a
big part of watercolour painting. The
transparency of many layers of
colour is what keeps my trying.
I have taken several workshops in
both Edmonton and Victoria. In
January 2013, I was the feature
artist at SWCA. This was the first
time I had shown my work to
anyone! With the wonderful support
of SWCA members, I am no longer
reluctant to show what I have done
and have participated in several
SWCA Exhibitions.
I have nearly completed the Art
Certificate Program at the University
of Alberta Faculty of Extension, and
now am excited about producing
enough work for the graduating solo
show. My theme is centred around
glimpses of beauty along the
Anthony Henday Freeway. Those
brief glimpses get filtered through
my imagination to produce
watercolour landscapes with a little
more colour than may appear in
reality. 100 kmh glimpses leave lots
of room for the imagination.
“A Glimpse of Wedgwood Creek” is
one of the pieces I will be using in
my graduating Solo Exhibition.

George Pegg Botanic
Garden 4th Annual Show
and Sale
Allied Arts Council of
Spruce Grove
Hello to our artist friends. A quick
note to let you know we are planning
for the 4th Annual Art Show & Sale
at the George Pegg Botanic Garden.
The date is Father’s Day, Sunday,
June 19, 2016. Our goal is to increase
the number of artists at the show.
The Allied Arts Council of Spruce
Grove welcomes all Alberta Artists
and 3D Artists to submit a proposal
as our Feature Artist for a solo or
group show to be held at the Spruce
Grove Art Gallery in 2017.
The 2015 Art Show and Sale was
great success. The Garden looked
fabulous with more than 20 artists
displaying their talent. Our musical
friends entertained visitors through
the whole day. Once again, visitors
and vendors loved the spectacular
weather.
We hope you will save the date and
plan to be a part of this exciting
event. Watch for updates as they
become available.

AFFIRMATIONS FOR ARTISTS
Excerpt from the book “Affirmations for Artists” by Eric Maisel.
This book is available on Amazon.ca.
Risk Taking
What risks must artists take? The first is to risk proclaiming
unequivocably, “I am an artist.” The second is to risk making every
manner of mistake, hundreds and thousands of them. The third ...
but the list is very long. Who wouldn’t prefer a little safety, a little
ease to all this risk-taking? To risk day after day and decade after
decade is a difficult, nerve-racking business, capable of bruising
the strongest ego. But this is the artist’s path, which he embraces
even with a certain zest.
Say to yourself: How brave am I? I hardly know. Sometimes I flee
from danger, sometimes I hold my ground. Sometimes I cower,
sometimes I stand erect. Certainly I am not always a risk-taking
creature. But to be the artist I mean to be, I will take at least a few
necessary risks each and every day.
“I have never liked the middle ground – the most boring place in
the world.” – Louise Nevelson
“No noble things can be done without risks.”
– Michel Eyquem de Montaigne
