On the cover: See Wellington in full bloom
this kōanga at the Spring Festival, Saturday
24 September–Sunday 2 October. A wide
range of events are on at our gardens and
around the city, including Kids’ Day Out
on Saturday 1 October. See pages 18–22 for

“This is a great time to be in Wellington. The economy
is picking up so it’s important we make the right
decisions to keep the momentum going.
Our Long-term Plan, and the latest Annual Plan,
will ensure Wellingtonians continue to receive the
basic services they expect – plus new projects that
will transform the city – at an average cost of $5.93
per resident a day, and without any cuts to services.
That’s what I call good value for money.”
— Kevin Lavery, Chief Executive, Wellington City Council
In the picture: Kevin talks with BizDojo regional manager Jessica Manins.
The new tech hub at BizDojo is an inner city space for innovators and entrepreneurs
to collaborate. It’s an excellent example of how we can help the economy grow, on
top of delivering basic services.

Wellington is full of cheap and free activities for the
whole whānau. Here are our picks for spring.
Be a pirate for a day
Celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Monday 19 September
with a trip to the new pirate ship at Churchill Park Play Area in Seatoun.
While you’re there, take a stroll up the Oru-arrr-iti Reserve walkway
and admire the view.
Give the whole family a workout
Take your kurī to the city’s biggest fenced dog park at Ian Galloway Park
for off-leash fun. Once they’re tuckered out, you can get some exercise
yourself. Strap on your knee pads and whoosh over some bumps at the
brand new BMX track (or let the kids show you how it’s done).
Love your leftovers
Learn clever ways to use up leftovers and “old” food at our Love Food
Hate Waste cooking classes. They happen the first Saturday of every
month from 10am to 12 noon at Crave Cooking School in Lyall Bay, and
cost $5 per person. For details, visit lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz and click
on “events”.
Net yourself a good time
Spring is the season to court your partner. Score some points greater
than love by getting out to enjoy our flash new tennis nets at Hataitai
Park. It’s also a great place to get on your bike and whizz around the
velodrome, getting yourself fit for summer.
Visit Truby King on the hill
Discover the hidden gem of the four Wellington Gardens, Truby King
Park. Enjoy the blossoming cherry trees that line the driveway, then
explore the remnants of Truby King’s rhododendron collection on the
bank below the lookout, where there are also camellias in flower.

Be prepared: store enough
water for 7 days
In case of emergency, it’s now recommended
you store enough food and water for a week
at least. That’s 3 litres of water per day, per
person – and don’t forget your pets! This will
only be enough for drinking and cooking, so
if you want water for washing and bathing
you’ll need to store extra.
Mayor Kitts’ Reception: Visit by Rotorua meter maid, a pig and some nuns. Commissioned by staff member:
PRO, City Engineers Department. 16 June 1967
Hot tip: You can also hire equipment
from the Push Play library at ASB
Sports Centre. Visit wellington.govt.nz/
pushplay to find out more.
Hot tip: You can buy a 200-litre rainwater
tank from the Council’s Service Centre
for $105. See wellington.govt.nz/
watertanks
Daylight saving starts Sunday 25 September
Put your clock forward an hour then go back in time with a visit to the Wellington City Archives.

Have your say on the Basin Reserve
Redevelopment
We’re looking at ways to bring the Basin
Reserve into the 21st century. While making
sure it remains a world-class cricket venue,
we want to consider how to improve the
village green feel of the Basin as a public
recreation area. Let us hear your thoughts
about this well-loved space in the heart of
Wellington – visit basin.wellington.govt.nz
Help give this much-loved suburb a spruce up
and enjoy a barbecue and refreshments with
other volunteers afterwards. Meet outside
Newtown New World at 9am on Saturday 3
September or Saturday 3 December. You can
also help keep graffiti at bay by reporting
it via our smartphone app FIXiT, or getting
involved in our graffiti removal programme
Blank It Out. Find out more at wellington.

Shift your body, shift your mind
Shift is a project that’s helping Wellington
women aged 12–20 become happier and
healthier. Delivered in partnership with
the Wellington Boys and Girls Institute,
Shift puts the power into young women’s
hands by teaching them the skills they
need to lead physical activity and wellbeing
initiatives for their peers. If you or a woman
you know aged 12–20 is looking for fun,
social, low-cost physical activities and mood
boosters, visit wellington.govt.nz/shift or

Help us help the kererū

10
Pest control and planting in Wellington
has helped the kererū population recover.
This once-threatened species is now a
symbol of the successful restoration of our
urban ecosystems. The birds are thought
to be a keystone species for native forest
ecosystems – they distribute (by pigeonpost) the seeds of trees that make up the
canopy of the forest. Many important trees
have large seeds that cannot be swallowed
whole by any other species.
You can help us understand how populations
of kererū are changing in the capital by
getting out and about and recording where
you see them (and where you don’t!) during
the Great Kererū Count (16–25 September).
This information helps us manage natural
areas better. Go to greatkererucount.nz
Get into and give back to nature for Conservation Week
From 10 to 18 September, events, competitions and activities will be happening around
the region to mark Conservation Week. Find out more – and how you can get involved in

Exhibition explores queer female
sexuality and activism
Collages and drawings by artist Sian
Torrington will be lighting up the central
city from 8 August to 5 December. The
exhibition in the Courtenay Place Park
light boxes, which Torrington describes as
“a document of intimacy and sharing”, is part

Cladding/masonry
Plants and trees
Damp cladding or masonry can lead to
moisture getting into your home’s framing or
under the floor. Over time, this can cause the
house to rot. To keep your foundations dry:
They’re beautiful in the garden, but can
cause problems if they get too close to
the house. To make sure their presence is
a pleasure not a pain:
check that paths and paving direct water
away from the house and foundations
clear away soil build-up along the
sides of your house and airvents
110
trim overhanging trees (which also
give rats and mice easy access to
your house) and drains
clear gutters and fit gutter guards
make sure cladding is at least 175mm
above the grass or garden, or 100mm
above paved surfaces
clear away leaves and other
garden debris from foundation
air vents
put in a 150mm–225mm mowing strip
between your house and lawn.
remove plants that are growing
into drains or under foundations.

Declare your love for Wellington
Love is all around us. It’s in the parks and peaks, the
alleys and eateries, the laneways and landmarks of
this vibrant little capital. But true romance is always
about the things we do – our actions, our gestures.
If you love Wellington and want to keep the flame
alive, don’t hesitate to act on it. Vote.
Check your letterbox for your voting
documents from Friday 16 September. You
need to complete and return them to the
Electoral Officer by no later than 12 noon on
polling day, Saturday 8 October 2016 (the
day on which the voting period ends). For
your completed voting documents to reach
us in time, you must either:
• mail them by Wednesday 5 October
• drop them off to any of our libraries up
to and including 12 noon on Saturday
8 October.
For more details visit
wellington.govt.nz/elections
14
The local authority elections are held
every 3 years, and give you the chance to
vote for Wellington City Council as well
as Capital and Coast District Health Board
and Greater Wellington Regional Council.
Depending on where you live, you may
also vote for Hutt Mana Charitable Trust,
Makara-Ohariu Community Board or Tawa
Community Board.
Special voting
You can apply for a special vote during the
3-week voting period if:
• your name does not appear on the final
electoral roll at your current address, but
you qualify as an elector
• you did not receive your voting
documents
• your voting documents previously posted
to you have been spoiled or damaged
• your name appears on the unpublished
electoral roll.
